Cadence took a breath, giving one last look around her room. It was devoid of all of her most precious things, which was good. They would follow her to her next life. They would still be precious to her and still work to make her new home a home...which was always the best way to live one’s life. She had written a letter, for her family, and for the apartment owners which lay on her dresser. It was your run of the mill “Sorry for dipping out on my lease but I’m running away to New York to chase my dreams” sort of goodbye note that was vague enough that her true motives wouldn’t be seen, but informative enough that it wouldn’t cause suspicion that she had been kidnapped or trafficked or…

Whatever.

Let them assume that she just didn’t make it in New York. Let them assume that she felt like too much of a failure to ever contact anyone again.

…Let them assume what they wished. She had made her decision, and she was going to stick to it, no matter what. There was no going back now, nor would she want to.

She left the apartment for the last time and drew in a breath full of the winter air. There was one last loose end to tie up. She had one more person to say goodbye to, and it had been a fight back and forth with herself if she was going to make it, but she finally had written the letter that was tucked into her purse now. A goodbye letter to Caius, wrapped around a gift card for the diner that they had gone to, and two tickets to see Wicked.

Quote:
Hey patrol buddy!
I’m so sorry that I’m having to write this to you, but I don’t think we’ll be able to hang out anymore…it’s nothing that you did, but my girlfriend is on the other side of all of this…and I’m going to go be with her, so I’m not sure that we can have the same friendship that we have up until now. Still! I got you tickets to see Wicked so that I can at least influence your mind towards theater, take someone nice, and think of me.

I’m not sure what I’ll forget after this is said and done, but I don’t think I’ll forget our friendship, It wasn’t a long one, but it was precious. I’m glad that you know how your stuff works now, it makes me happy to see you happy! Take care, Caius!

-Cadence

The letter and the gifts were in a small blue envelope with small puffy stars drawn all over it. They all had smile faces or other stupid expressions, and Caius’ name was written on the envelope.

The bakery was closed, so she slipped it under the door and sighed softly, clutching her suitcase in her hand for a long moment before she turned away and continued her trip to meet her destiny.
