A rabid or feral animal was something to have been expected. Something that animal control should have been called to handle but as it was Officer Griffin was in the vicinity and as a courtesy, she volunteered to check in on the situation. The homeowner had called the emergency line stating that either someone or something was hiding out in their back yard; they weren’t sure but guessed it might have been a bobcat or coyote, or some teenager that was high making animal sounds to scare them.

What she encountered was something… other. Something not quite animalistic and yet oddly so, just… incredibly out of place. A turtle, tortoise in size but attitude of a snapping or box turtle. What’s worse is that it chased her out of the backyard and into the alley between homes.

Backup would have been appreciated but it has been a long while since she went on a patrol with a partner. Unfortunately, her radio had been damaged when she had fallen on it a moment prior and her vehicle was a block away.

The situation looked bleak and as a last resort, Erica discharged her weapon and the monstrosity stopped, recoiled from the loud sound and hid within its shell. Then, as if her wordless prayers were answered, someone who was actually able to deal with this sort of thing showed up. A senshi like Jeremy’s brother, or so she assumed by the color of her outfit.

Erica knew what the senshi said was true, that firing at it again would only piss it off more, so she holstered the gun, “I’m sorry, I wish there was something more I could do.” Somehow she felt like offering to call Myles for help would be ill-advised and potentially put her at odds with her fellow officer.

She moved to leave and just as her back turned the turtle moved, yellow gleaming eyes glowed from within the shell and before Erica could think to move, the youma’s head shot forward and slammed into her side with a force strong enough to knock her off her feet.

Although she hadn’t yet responded to the Senshi's questions, Officer Griffin did hear them. Tried to nod her head, but the movement was migraine-inducing and only made the stars in her vision shine that much brighter.

It felt like an eternity before Erica was able to draw breath again and when she did, God it hurt like a b***h. Whatever the hell that ******** thing was, it damn well might have fractured one if not two of her ribs with. With much effort, she managed to roll over and push herself up into a seated position. There was urgency and worry lacing the young woman's voice and though the Senshi kept insisting that she should run; it went against Erica’s moral compass to leave someone behind like that.

Hell, if she were Myles, Jeremey’s younger brother; there was no way she’d be able to turn her back. Didn’t matter if they could take the beating. “I’m not-” She paused when it felt like there was something under her hand; a piece of rebar maybe, or a broken piece of wood. Nothing sharp, thankfully. But when her vision cleared and she looked down, Erica balked at what she saw.

“Oh s**t-” Where did her gun go? The taser and can of pepper spray… even the body cam that was usually mounted on her shoulder was missing too. In fact, her normal uniform-that black one issued by the City that every police officer wore… yeah-it was gone. GONE!

“Umm-...” Rainier cleared her throat not knowing what exactly she was supposed to say, to ask. To do…

A moment is what it took for Rainier to finally see straight and, with some effort, stand up again. She stumbled a few steps before getting her bearings together.

The girl had called her a Kight, corrected herself and said Page, but they were in essence the same thing. But it did make her wonder how that made her different than what she was; a senshi, or so Rainier assumed since she’d only met Jeremy’s brother who was one as well. Since then, there hadn’t been another encounter with one of them. One might consider that a blessing but she wasn’t so sure.

“I don’t have a stick,” Rainier looked down at the weapon she now held and from it there was a wire. She gave it a tug and it extended out to about three feet in length. “This might work.” A garrote of sorts but with how delicate it looked, she wondered if it would be strong enough to hold.

“Yes, obviously.” The sharp snapping sound caused her to flinch despite the attack being aimed at the Senshi.

Fortunately her own coordination was well enough to let go of the weapon so she could swing it in a circle, using the centripetal force to gain the velocity needed to ensure that when she let go of the wire with one hand that the oddly shaped thing would wrap around the monsters neck at minimum once, twice if she was lucky.

“I hope you’re ready with that magic of yours.” There was no countdown to time so they happened simultaneously since the turtle would just withdraw into its shell again if given a noticeable delay. Strike while the iron’s hot, or so the saying went; no time to delay.

Rainier stepped forward and to the side of it so she had a decent enough angle to attack before unleashing her weapon much like a rope dart. The weighted end soared through the air, tried and true, the cord snapping against the back of the youma’s neck pulling taught when the symbol-ish thing swung under its throat, up and over the cord where it hooked into place.

Success! Or so she hoped, the wire looked delicate enough to snap under too much strain. For now though she kept it from withdrawing back into its shell and hoped that the senshi could still do her thing and get rid of the damned monstrosity.

“Rainier,” she replied, which was strange how the name came without a second thought. Her expression twisted to match her confusion but with a shrug, she dismissed the thought, for now at least.

“I’ll admit I am confused. But… not by what you might be thinking.” More like why rather than what. “I’ve met a couple of senshi before. Some like you and some that uh- jump into mirrors” To this day she’d swear she’d been hallucinating but now there were monsters and it felt like all bets were off the table and anything was possible. Next thing she’d know aliens were real.

“I just wonder, why now? This war isn’t new to me I just- my profession kept me from being involved.” Not only did she sound bewildered, but Rainier looked at it. “Is this how knights work? Just one day poof you’re there.” Felt an awful lot like Genie from Aladdin.

Perhaps it would be wise to network with other Knights, take Keiko up on her offer and find a mentor. It’s what she had done at the precinct.

Talking cats… Rainier felt skeptical but when there were feral beasts running around the streets and neighborhoods of Destiny City, somehow she felt mildly unsurprised.

The Senshi powered down and Rainer would have followed suit but for good reason, she didn’t even try. “I’m not really sure how you did that,” same being said that she wasn’t sure how she powered up in the first place since all she did was grab the weapon. “But I don’t think it would be wise for me to power down with you here.”

“As you might have noticed I’m a police officer. Officer Griffin, or Erica when not in uniform. But I don’t know my body cam was damaged when that thing flung me across the alley. If it’s not, then I don't want your identity compromised because the last footage it would have caught would have been you in uniform instead of as you are now.”

Rainier offered a rueful smile but accepted the phone nonetheless and added in her information.
