tab tab ➷ tab Born the youngest daughter to a family of rye farmers. Kaede as a young child adored her older brother, and idolized her older sister. Eager to assist her brother and father in the fields, though it seemed to be more often than not, an excuse to play with the tools while pretending she was a Demon Slayer. As the tales that her father told the children of warriors that killed the evils that existed in the world. Kaede would come up with fantastical tales of the evil spirits she fought off while "protecting" her father and brother in the fields.
tab tab ➷ tab For the first ten years of her life Kaede was spoiled with irresponsibility, and dreams of the extraordinary adventure she would lead. Though the attempts from her mother and sister, to mold Kaede into a respectable young woman, were admirable. Kaede's father and brother's humoring of her antics proved to be too much of a foil. As both knew that innocent dreaming of a child was a fleeting thing, and Kaede, like her sister would marry into a life better than they had. As Takumi, her father, was already speaking to potential families on arranged marriages.
tab tab ➷ tab It was the spring of that year that Kaede's life would turn in a direction she would never truly expect. Occasionally, after tending to the fields, Takumi and Junpei would go into town. Though the reasons would vary, Kaede would always anxiously wait for their arrival home, as she was not allowed to join them. So, when her brother came running back to the house, Kaede was quick to jump up and greet him. Though she barely got more than a word out, before the young girl was being dragged in a hurry, away from the entrance.
tab tab ➷ tab Constantly questioning what was going on, and where their father was. Kaede did not relent until something in the darkness caught her eye. Though she pointed out the figure as it moved, it seemed none of the other's present could see what she spoke of. Scolded, as they demanded it was a bad time for her wild stories. Junpei proceeded to explain how they were attacked on the road by a pale man. Sent to get the others and run. Junpei was determined to get their father's sword and help their father as he fought the assailant.
tab tab ➷ tab As Junpei unsheathed the blade, and began to leave, a figure could be seen looming outside of the house. Though their mother refused to leave Junpei, and pleaded with him to not fight, she demanded that Sakura take Kaede and hide until daybreak. As Kaede followed Sakura, she could not help but look back, able to see as the demon toyed with her brother. The battle between them was no more than a human toying with a beetle. Though she wanted to, Kaede could not take her eyes away as she watched the demon cut down her mother, and continued to toy with her brother. Not until the foliage of the neighboring forest became too thick to see through.
tab tab ➷ tab Tears streamed from her eyes the entire night as reality set in. Demons were real, and the stories that her father told her were more than just fairy tales. As Kaede was falling into a near catatonic state, Sakura could no longer lug her sister along. Desperate, Sakura stumbled upon a dense bush with enough coverage to hide her sister. Telling Kaede to stay put as she went to get help. The young girl didn't seem to respond as she shook and watched her sister leave.
tab tab ➷ tab It was not until nearly noon the next day that Kaede got the strength to move from her spot. Having not slept a wink, the young girl stumbled back towards her house. Her mind unaware of the dangers that could still be there, waiting. Yet, as she emerged from the foliage, there was someone else that was at the house. At first thinking that it was her father, Kaede continued to stumble towards figure. When she got close enough to be noticed, the man turned, he was familiar. Quickly the man scooped the checked-out girl into tight hug. Though she did not recognize him at first, Yuuki, her uncle was quick to recognize her.
tab tab ➷ tab For nearly a month Kaede did not speak. Taken in by her uncle, and cared for, Kaede's first words were asking of her sister. Unable to bring himself to tell the young girl of her sister's fate. Yuuki told Kaede that her sister made it to the young man that she was to wed, but was hurt. As the young girl's mood seemed to lighten with the new that her sister was still alive, Kaede immediately wanted to leave to be with her. It was not until Yuuki explained that Sakura and her new husband could not support her, that she would be a burden on them, that Kaede accepted her new home.
tab tab ➷ tab Left with no other prospects, Yuuki began to train Kaede. Though the young girl was constantly trying to get out of training, she would always cave to Yuuki's demands. Far stricter than her father or mother had been, Kaede's uncle trained he for years to come. Though he'd never managed to break her of the cowardness. When push came to shove, Kaede's muscle memory and talents proved to be far more than he ever thought she could be capable of. At a certain point Kaede even began to enjoy the training and breathing styles. As when she was in the moment her mind seemed to turn off, and all the thoughts swirling through her mind took a backseat to the moment. Though the ever-present fear of facing a demon again felt like a dagger of ice through her stomach.
tab tab ➷ tab Over the years, Kaede constantly wrote letters to her sister that Yuuki would send, but only ever received one letter in return. Kaede read that Sakura had a child, and life was incredibly busy for her. Excited for her sister, Kaede desperately wanted to reunite. So, when the time came, and Yuuki believed she was truly ready for the Final Selection. Kaede argued with her uncle that she was not ready. It was not until Yuuki offered information on Sakura that Kaede relented to doing the Final Selection.
