He was mostly healed by the time he made his way into the Queen's office after a polite knock and permission to enter.

Jet had every intention of standing still, so there was no need for anyone to be considered with his temporary limp. He wore a brace around his chest and abdomen (that he struggled with putting on under his uniform before making his way to the office) protecting his still healing ribs.

His face looked better now that it wasn't covered in blood, although there was still some nasty looking bruising along his jaw and temple, and several bandages protecting the gash caused by Ganymede's broken glass shoe from his forehead and down across his cheek.

He'd had a chance to shower (a number of times by now), so his curls were back to being more of what Aquamarine approved of than just a matted mess of blood and tea and sweat. And most importantly, he'd had time to shave, so he looked less like an escaped convict and more, well, presentable. He hoped.

"I'm ready to discuss our future goals, Your Majesty," he said, with his hands sort of behind his back at attention, ignoring that it kind of hurt to stand that way. He had enough pain medicine that he would be fine for a while longer.

Aquamarine would probably claim that Jet was disobeying orders by not being at one hundred percent, but he was so restless that he had to do something.

When he entered, Laurelite looked amused. A little tight lipped in her smile, and her brows were raised just slightly with something akin to scrutiny.

“General King,” she greeted. She would have been inclined to agree with Aquamarine; he was obviously not at a hundred percent. He should still be resting.

And yet, this was no different than what she expected.

“Come sit down.”

She gestured towards one of the chairs. “Let us forfeit precedence for the moment. You are an injured man. If I let you hurt yourself, Aquamarine will have words for me, and I think it’s best for all of us that I see you returned in no worse condition than you arrived.”

Jet opened his mouth for a moment, maybe to swear that Aquamarine wouldn’t come and harass her about Jet’s own actions, but soon shut it because it definitely wasn’t his place to argue with the Queen. He pressed his lips together instead, and nodded as he very carefully stepped towards the chair and lowered himself into it. It took more effort to keep his expression from betraying his discomfort than he would have liked, but let out a small breath of relief when he was no longer putting weight on his leg.

“Thank you,” he said quietly, still not used to the new title. Nor was he used to the strange but satisfying rush. He felt like a child with a new piano on Christmas morning. Was that a normal thought to have? Maybe most children didn’t want a piano, but this was like getting a full grand and a concert hall and--

“I know I’m not completely healed yet, but I feel like I need to do something. I can… research or… plan a mission or…” he paused and shook his head because he didn’t want to start rambling when the Queen was obviously trusting him to at least be somewhat competent.

Right? Was that a requirement for being a General King? He thought Axinite was competent, although a little hard on himself… He didn’t know Lepidolite or Hessonite well enough… Was he going to have to meet them?? He probably was. Oh… yeah he probably would have to meet them.

“Of course,” Laurelite said, and she smiled at him like she was still both amused and proud. “Pick something you can do from your desk. You’ve got access to more files, I’ve made sure your permissions have been updated. You don’t need my permission to research or plan missions, Jet. I’d like it if you kept me informed, but you’re more than welcome to work on a project if you’re interested. Do you have something in mind already?”

She seemed patient, maybe because she remembered what it was like to be a new General Queen. She remembered the pressure of it all, the fear of messing up. She was ambitious, she had only ever wanted to make Metallia proud.

Jet seemed as passionate about serving the Negaverse as she had been. She was eager to give him the chance.

"Thank you," he said quietly, trying not to sound too starstruck. He could never really tell what the Queen was thinking, but the last thing he wanted to do was let her down, especially after everything.

He'd made it back alive, so that was a good start, wasn't it?

"Oh, um… I wasn't sure if there were any areas that needed extra help. I mean, I know everything is mostly covered but you and the other General Sovereigns are always so busy, so I felt like I should probably be doing something too. But you just said I could work from my desk, so yeah, I'll probably read through the files I now have access to," he rambled, and the more he tried to stop himself from talking, the more words he heard from his mouth.

"I know it was mentioned to me about putting in a directory or map or something to help people find out where offices were. I mean, unless it's a safety thing to keep that as a need-to-know thing. Some of the newer recruits were having trouble finding their way around," he explained, and then cringed because that seemed like such a pathetic thing to bring up to the Queen.

"Or… you said before that Commodore Lyndin was working on different ways to collect energy. I wouldn't mind working with him, especially if it will help build up our stores."

Laurelite’s smile was unwavering. “You’ll find that there are many tasks that need tending to, Jet. You’re more than welcome to look into all of them. Or see if there’s someone you’d like to assign to it. As long as you’re taking it easy, for now, I support you.”

She needed to make sure he was is one piece before he started putting himself in danger again.

“If you’d like to put a directory up, you’re welcome to. If it’s digital, on the tablets, those are already safe guarded. I doubt we’ll have another invasion, but,” her smile was almost, almost, menacing, like she dared them to try now that she was queen. “I think that’s a bit unlikely. If you think we would benefit from some interior signage, I’d consider it. I do hope new recruits aren’t wandering around unsupervised, though. I’d hate for one of them to get hurt because they wandered into the wrong room.”

Not that it was Jet’s fault; she’d have blamed whoever brought them in and let them explore unsupervised. “If you’d like to work with Lyndin, I encourage caution only. I would hate for any of our information to get into the wrong hands. Make sure you review what information is classified before you speak to him, he’s got a file you can read up on, too. But I might even be grateful to know someone was keeping an eye on him. I don’t think he’s up to any mischief, but I don’t trust easily. The sooner his project is completed, the better off we are, though.”

Jet nodded, maybe a bit more enthusiastically than he should have because it made his brain feel like it rattled a bit in his skull. But he was eager to do his job, to please the Queen and Metallia. He wanted to show them how grateful he was, and he wanted to make sure the Negaverse was what he knew it had the potential to be.

“Yes, Your Majesty,” he said, still enthusiastically. “I’ll read up on everything, and I won’t let him know any information. I don’t trust easily, either.”

Although she probably knew that about him. He didn’t exactly have many close friends in the Negaverse, or in his civilian life. He spoke most openly with Axinite, other than Aquamarine, of course. His recruits were given as much information as they needed about him, in case they needed help but it took him some time to actually trust others enough to open up to them.

“Is there anything else I can do that might help or… that I should know? I mean, I can read the information, so you don’t have to tell me,” he quickly said, not wanting her to think he was trying to waste her time. But if there was anything he should know that wasn’t in the tablet’s information-- unless she was really waiting for him to heal completely first. Ugh.

Laurelite only smiled at him. “I know you’ll be thorough, Jet. I’m not worried about that. I am worried that you’ll keep trying to sneak work while you’re recovering, so let’s make that your priority. I’ll message you some of the projects I’m working on, you can look over them. See if anything strikes your fancy.”

She seemed patient, but perhaps understood that Jet might feel better having an idea of what he might be able to look forward to, or something more than just ‘read’ while he was recovering. Still, she wasn’t going to rush to get him back out and active.

“When you’re better, we’ll talk about things I’d like to do. Running some practice missions, making sure our General Operations are covered and recruits have the support they need would be helpful. If you want to do some busy work, keep your ears out and see if you can get feedback from other Generals or Captains to see what their newer recruits are struggling with. If you’re feeling particularly generous with your time, go ahead and introduce yourself to some of them, give them a good role model to look up to.”

He couldn’t help but freeze a little in place when the Queen basically called him out for everything he was probably going to be doing, anyway. Working while he was supposed to be recovering, to him, just seemed like an efficient use of his time. He got restless and bored if he sat around doing nothing.

Still, he wished his cheeks and eyes wouldn’t reveal his guilt like they did.

As for being a good role model… He didn’t really know how to go about doing that. He knew how to be a good Negaverse officer, but he literally grew up fending for himself. And if it wasn’t for Aquamarine, and occasionally others, Jet wasn’t sure he would have made it as far as he had. Alive.

He knew he could be as reckless as he was restless. He would rather put himself in danger than let someone else get hurt.

But he also knew he did have more responsibilities now, and he wasn’t going to start by letting the Queen down. Not when she trusted him.

“I will,” he agreed, because that was what he did. Her trust in him only went as far as his trust in her. So if she told him to do something, he knew it was for his own good, and for the betterment of the Negaverse. “Thank you, Your Majesty. I… I guess I should go and rest a bit,” he admitted, because he did want to get better so he could do everything else she needed from him.
