Energy draining sure did suck some nights.

Normally, Adonis could make a habit out of turning down the boys' invitation to grab drinks after the day's work, then power up and nick some energy off of his coworkers. They'd be tired after a long day of riveting steel bars, installing rebar, laying concrete — no one ever noticed that they were hemorrhaging energy at the hands of some scab at the end of the bar. But the outings had grown less and less frequent with a recent fissure in the crew, so that easy score was out for the moment.

Adonis had to hunt energy like a Captain without a clue now. Had to wander through streets, over rooftops, wherever, and look for new places to drain. He thought about the usual spots — clubs, other bars homeless shelters, whatever — but few of them piqued his interest.

He went with the park instead. He'd heard through the many lines of gossip that there had been an impromptu battle out there, that someone was stabbed, and the morbid part of him wanted to look for the bloodstains. Logically, he knew there'd be nothing left of it; the rain and snow would've taken care of any leftovers by now. But, his curiosity was piqued, and wouldn't be satisfied until he had himself a look.

It was a loamy, grassy place, full of trees on the outskirts, benches, white lined soccer fields in the distance. Adonis heard the grass whisper with each footfall. In the late evening, he couldn't see much of any stains. "Heck," he sighed to himself.

Heard the onrush of feet and he turned, spotting a jogger coming up fast. It was easy enough to drain as the man ran by, and he grew the orb hidden behind his back to an impressive size before he watched his friendly neighborhood jogger go down. Must've drawn a little too quickly.

"Sorry, my guy." He approached at a leisurely pace as he dismissed the orb to subspace. "Heard this crazy rumor once, that joggers sometimes drop dead on the spot? I guess it was something about their hearts, some kind of massive electrical event. Sounded real sad, if you ask me. Imagine if that happened to you…"

Coming back to this park, this place--Caer Sidi wasn't sure why she felt so compelled to return, but she did. Someone had died here, had given their life in the battle that had started because she was nearly captured and corrupted. It felt like a form of mourning, and also like she was retreading that moment, over and over. What else could she have done? Could she have fled the General faster? Gotten away on her own? Should she have let herself be taken rather than risking the lives of others?

The answers to those questions were few and far between.

But she could feel a Chaos aura, and she frowned, and picked up her pace, hiking up her long, flowy skirt. It wasn't exactly easy to run in her dress, art nouveau ballgown that it was, but she hated to leave Chaos unattended.

And it was smart of her to intervene, because what she saw was the worst kind of horror. A Corrupt Senshi, approaching an unconscious civilian.

"Stay away from him!" Caer Sidi declared. She booked it, as quickly as she could, to get close, glad for a Squire's speed. "I won't let you harm him!" Her Oath, at the least, wouldn't let her allow it. The mark on the back of her hand throbbed, like a reminder that this was her responsibility. That she had no choice but to protect.

Adonis smirked as he quipped back. "Good thing you can't control my actions, huh, Sweetheart?"

Adonis felt the aura before he heard the voice. He anticipated trouble with this one — more trouble than the Page from before. This was someone on the same level as him, and if he didn't want one shitshow of a battle, he best be playing his cards right.

Unwilling to spend so much energy on a teleport, Adonis dove for the prone jogger. Went from full run to throwing himself horizontally through the air to get to that damn body before she did. Because?

1) Starseed. Can't live without 'em. And the boss lady? She would need them to justify a break to her superiors.
2) Information. It was easier to learn a touch more about the enemy if he had some collateral to trade for,
3) Emergency rations. If things went to s**t real fast with the addition of this new Squire or Super or whatever, then Adonis needed every edge he could find.

She couldn't control his actions, no--but she could do something to protect the poor man.

Caer Sidi glared, and held up her suncatcher, calling upon her magic--creating shimmering starlight shields over herself and the poor unconscious civilian.

"I told you," she said, voice firm, "I won't let you harm him." She didn't have to throw punches to be able to protect people--her magic was certainly deterrent enough. And it would, at least for the moment, stop the starseed pull--just like it had stopped that General from pulling hers.

She just had to hope that it worked as a deterrent.

Quote:
Caer Sidi holds up her suncatcher, and she and allies within 8 feet of her are surrounded by shimmering starlight shields. For as long as she is channeling, anyone affected by her magic is protected from incoming physical damage, and magical damage caused by those her rank or lower; it will simply glance off the starlight shield. Damage from magic cast by those higher rank than her will have reduced damage, but can still break through. Caer Sidi can channel for up to 35 seconds at Squire stage.

"Hey, how 'bout that. Fancy magic, you got there. How long's it last, though?" Adonis paced up to the brilliant, starsewn thing — a perfect bubble, at that — and gave it a few pokes. Then he rubbed his hands against it like a cat begging for entry, then he knocked, and added, "hey, can you still hear me in there?"

Maybe she could, maybe she couldn't. She wasn't listening, anyway.

And the jogger — well. Peering around the curvature of the Squire's shield, it looked like his free ticket to more starseeds was beginning to stir. He'd be in for a helluva surprise if he didn't immediately figure himself concussed.

Maybe, if he was lucky, the dude would stick around.

"Long enough," Sidi said, voice firm and determined. And then she had her Aspect, and if that failed, she had her body.

Once upon a time, Caer Sidi never would have imagined herself making sacrifices to protect someone else. She wasn't that kind of person. But she had her Oath, now, and it compelled her--forced her to make the right choice, rather than the easy one.

"I am Caer Sidi of Cosmos," she declared, "and I am sworn to protect those weaker than me. So I will not--cannot--allow you to kill a civilian when I could stop you."

So she decided to take the risk--dropped her shield, called on her Aspect, and launched herself forward at the Corrupt, aiming to knock him to the ground and make him regret trying to challenge her.

She really, really wished she had a more offense-oriented spell, like Hype's, but her Aspect would have to do in the interim.

Quote:
ASPECT OF THE COSMOS: The silvery sheen of starlight covers the Knights of the Cosmos, and their touch is just as heavenly. It's warm and pleasant to most, but acidic and painful to corrupted beings. For the followers of Chaos, physical contact with one of these Knights feels like a mild chemical burn: although it does nothing in the way of actual damage, it's hard to tolerate it and the effects can last for a few seconds after contact.

Adonis didn't understand why she was so hung up about the stranger. Did she know the guy? If not, who cared? There was just as much a chance of the dude being an embezzling b*****d or a serial killer as it was for him to be some philanthropist fop. All that betting on the good side of humanity seemed like a losing game, especially when they were betting against some creepy, otherworldly entity like Metallia.

Maybe she didn't realize that the game was stacked.

She'd dropped her shield — good sign — then turned sparkly as ******** — weird sign — then charged him — bad sign. He tried to play matador with her, dodge out of the way at the last second and let her unbalance herself, but his timing was just a touch too late. So while he succeeded in moving away from her, she'd clipped him — hard. The collision sent him into a half-turn, and he lurched a little for it.

But he hissed a quick string of expletives for how his arm, from shoulder to elbow, burned like an overcooked trout. Just, the damndest stinging thing that had him shaking out his arm to get it to dissipate.

"Damn, that's something, ain't it?" As he winced, he rubbed his hand over his arm. "Got news for you, though, Caer Sidi of Cosmos — House always wins. And if they catch you cheating?"

He held his hands up in a shrug. "You'll get Skinned Alive."

love caer's dedication heart

Skinned Alive ;;
Range: 20' / 1 target
Duration: 15 seconds
Use Count: 2
Miss Chance: Breaking eye contact, going out of range
Effect: Executed in the same manner as his basic attack, Adonis casts Skinned Alive by brushing his hands across any part of his uniform, which melts away for the duration of the attack. The change is mimicked in his targeted opponent, who he must make eye contact with, and they feel the effects of their skin being removed from their body. The affected area appears bloody, and the opponent suffers extreme pain akin to the name of the attack. It can be interrupted by attacking Adonis before his uniform manifests any changes, preventing him from making eye contact, or by shutting him up somehow before he utters the name of the attack. Once the duration ends, their body goes back to normal (as does his uniform).

If she was asked, Caer Sidi would not have been able to put into words what had made her take her Oath. What had made her put all her chips down on the basic goodness of humanity, when she wasn't exactly a shining exemplar of it herself. She was selfish, and petty, and bratty, and she had never wanted for anything in her precious, charmed life.

But someone had to fight. And she had chosen to be that someone.

"Isn't it just," she said, and she spun on her heels, going to attack him again. Another few punches and maybe he would get the idea that messing with her was a bad idea, and then he might leave, and she would have succeeded.

She narrowed her eyes, though, at his gesture, and then--

And then she howled in pain, because--her arm--

She looked over, and the howl of pain became a scream of horror.

"What did you do to me!"

A couple of her strikes connected — he'd been out of practice, after all. Holding a jackhammer or spreading concrete didn't mean much for combat capabilities. Might've been time to train with the new boss.

As he gained some distance on her, he answered. "Your skin was looking a little dull, so I gave you a refreshing chemical peel. Afraid it doesn't come with a satisfaction guarantee, but —"

He wiped some blood from the side of his mouth with the back of his hand. "It's never too late to make a deal. Cough up some energy, and you can keep your stranger." He'd probably drop dead in six months from some electrical event in his heart, which made it all the more frustrating that this b***h wouldn't back off. That was the perfect scenario for taking a starseed, since the jogger wouldn't be around for much longer anyway. What was it wasting, really?

Caer Sidi shook, staring down at her arms, torn between wanting to be sick and wanting to pass out. This was not what she had signed up for. This was not what being magical was supposed to be. Yeah, okay, there were threats, but they weren't supposed to be this--this--!

Gross--!

He was talking. The Corrupt was talking, and she had to jolt her head up and force herself to focus, because she'd definitely heard "deal," and maybe that was the way to get out of this. And what he was offering.....could she even refuse?

Her Oathmark itched.

".....Deal," she said. "Drain me, leave him alone."

Look at that! A reasonable Knight. He never thought he'd see the day.

"Good call, my knightly friend. Hold still now, just gonna skim a bit off the top…" An understatement, as he held his hand out to call forward her energy, but he wasn't going to drain her to death. He'd even avoid taking so much that she went unconscious! Call it an act of good will, or an investment, because a Knight he could reliably drain? Would save him a helluva lot of time and effort in the long run.

Maybe she'd even start to consider their side of things. Well, once all that sour nonsense with that battle wore off. And if not? They'd still make a whole lot of energy off of her.

"Pleasure doing business with you," he said with a wide grin, once he siphoned off enough energy to stuff into subspace. Then he bowed with a bit of flourish, and vanished into the dark.
