Adenah was at a crossroads.

She looked at the cart in front of her with a frown. The firey hybrid stood on the side of the road with her hands on her hips, curls absolutely askew due to sweat and a flush to her skin. It should have been a simple trip back home; rent a cart and beast, buy supplies to give to Thea, and bring them back in one piece. She'd loaded the cart to the brim and was in the process of riding back when something spooked her mount. The cart had gone wild, got stuck in some rocks and spirits had it taken her forever to calm the stupid beast! By the time it had stopped trying to stomp her to death Adenah noticed the biggest problem.

One of the wheels was broken.

And it was still stuck.

A few merchants had traveled past on their way to the port and she'd hoped they would agree to help. They'd been happy enough to buy her supplies, even to pay her just to come along, but when she'd flashed her swords they carried on. That just...left her where she'd started and...well s**t.

Gone were the days, it seemed, when Nimueh was constantly surrounded by a gaggle of children. In some ways he was thankful for time to himself once again, but at others he... wasn't. Finding odd jobs to do had often been difficult, in order to scrape enough coins together to support their children (and Ygraine's children too), but... these days his daughter's family had moved on to Belrea, and his own were in their late teens, and more likely to wander off for days at a time than to stay in one place.

In many ways, their children had all inherited the love of the road and urge to roam from their fathers.

He had a pack slung over his shoulder, full of a few bits and bobs... new stones, fine silver and gold woven threads he'd gotten for himself, and some other things he wanted to make into accessories for his husband. Once, he would have found rare, beautiful feathers, but finding your husband growing them suddenly took a bit of the joy out of collecting them from birds.

Shaking his head, amused at the thought, Nimueh looked up from the well worn path he'd been walking, slowing when he spotted...a person ahead, with a cart.

It could be innocent, but he'd also heard (and seen) plenty of situations where it was some sort of trap from bandits.

By that point Adenah had all but given up on getting her wagon out of there. The last man to stop by had all too happily offered assistance...if she wanted to spend the afternoon in the back of his wagon. Some words were said (mostly from her, mostly about things that were hidden by his small clothes...) he left and she wasn't any closer to getting by.

So, instead of wallowing in it, she'd decided to fix it herself! How hard could it be? She was in the process of taking off her jewelry by the time another man came into sight but Adenah barely paid him any mind. This was womans work now and he could just keep walking-

Her quick side eye turned into an outright gawk when she caught sight of how large he actually was. Screw womans work, he could just lift the cart and -

"Sir! Sir, excuse me, sir!" Adenah bounced up and waved her hands above her head, as if her appearance wasn't enough to make her stand out. He was definitely some sort of Aishan hybrid; not the same as Thea's husband, but it was obvious enough. Lady luck might have been on her side. "Can you please help me? I can pay you!"

As Nimueh drew closer, the young lady in distress only added to his worries that this was some sort of ambush. However, once he could properly see her, he realized she was absolutely dripping in bright accessories, piled as they were on the back of the lopsided wagon, and he found it difficult to consider a thief dressing so brightly. That, and she stood out quite a bit on her own - with rich red curls and shifter skin that stood out.

Hybrids were more and more prevalent these days, and yet Nimueh still felt fascinated whenever he saw another one of them - like himself, he could only imagine what sort of life they'd led, having inherited mixed blood.

"Are you out here on your own?" Nimueh asked, words that might have been ominous if they weren't layered with a concern that betrayed his parental nature. He set his bag down, striding closer to look at the wagon.

The mount pulling it had been fastened to a nearby fixture, but disconnected from the wagon which was pitched into a rut in the road that, once, must have been mud. Now, the wooden wheel had fallen out, and had a nasty looking crack that promised that any help he could offer would be a patch job, at best.

Thankfully, the settlement his family was staying at wasn't horribly far.

Adenah knew full well there were only two sorts of men that traveled on their own; bandits or the infirmed. Most generally it was the former, as anyone with common sense traveling a main road would have had someone with them, but he was on his own which, admittedly, put her guard up. If a man that big wanted to hurt her he could, even without a weapon, but it wasn't as if she were harmless...

"Yeah," She admitted with a sheepish sigh. "I have a room at the inn just up the road and I went out for work. I'm not sure what spooked this ninny-" She motioned toward her mount with a thumb and a roll of the eye, "but now we're here."

Nimueh surveyed the damage, hand scratching idly against his chin. It was probably a good thing that she was on edge - if anything, her subtle line of tension made him feel a bit safer that this wasn't some sort of ruse, himself. He slipped his hands under one edge, giving a testing heft of the cart, but it was full of so much that it didn't so much as budge. "Well. Lets empty the cart, and I'll see what I can do."

That was easier said than done, as it was packed literally to the brim - but he reached up and began to carefully pull off supplies, setting it carefully out of the way.

A few minutes in, and Nimueh was grumpily wishing he'd taken Siel with him - his son's help would have been appreciated. These days, as Nimueh got a bit older, manual labor wasn't as easy as it used to be for him, even with his size. "So many supplies, and no one came with you? Tsk." He commented, perhaps more grumpily than he would have a few years ago with a stranger. But having a big family had chipped away at his antisocial tendencies, and he wasn't nearly as standoffish as he once was.

Adenah didn’t even bother to hide the curl her lip gave or the groan that followed. “Ugh…sorry sorry, I just was sooo hoping you were a mage or something. You know, one of those ‘can lift it with a spell’ kind of guys.” She’d yet to see such a feat performed but that didn’t mean that she didn’t want to see it. How wonderful would it have been if he’d simply been able to snap his fingers and presto! Fixed cart!

Reaching up to her head, Adenah made sure her hair was securely tucked away in a hap hazard bun before dropping her hands with a nod. “Okay, let’s do this.” It became obvious early on that Adenah wasn’t the physical sort. She could hustle as much as anyone else, but when it came to brute strength…well, she obviously lacked. A few loads in and she was already huffing, a fine line of sweat working it’s way down her back. “I wasn’t…supposed to bring…so much back.” The hybrid wheezed. When she’d unloaded one of her bags and took a moment to huff. “In and out; quick work, you know? Real professional. I just have a problem when it comes to pretty things.” She shrugged.

The sun in this part of the country was almost as brutal as in Oba, beaming down on them with brutal strength that made his skin sting. He mourned not bringing a proper hat with him, but the one time he'd donned a straw hat to help with a garden his sons had laughed at him until, pouting, he slapped it onto Callum's head instead. His husband had much fairer skin, after all. As he worked though he could feel the warmth creeping along the back of his neck and ears, and knew that when he got back he'd be an uncomfortable purple in places.

At least she was helping, and hadn't just expected him to take care of it out of some sort of gentlemanly goodness. "... Are these all pretty things?" He asked, startled as he carefully set down the latest box. How much money must she have, to get a cart full of 'pretty things'? Although, his definition of pretty wasn't always the norm - he went for expensive rocks, after all, and she might simply like pretty cloth or something.

Adenah worked under the cover of night for a reason. Her darker skin absorbed the heat of the sun and held it, making her all the hotter for something she couldn’t control. At the very least if he skin shifted like her mother then she wouldn’t be so close to a heat stroke at any given moment, but then she would have to worry about burning. As it was the hybrid had already dug through her things for a thing bit of fabric to toss over her shoulders. It wasn’t much, but after tossing a bit of her water over it the cloth was at least cool. And, since she had more, Adenah offered the same treatment to her help.

“In a sense. My son likes to cook so I have some spices and a new pot, as well as some fabric to make clothes for my daughter.” She really shouldn’t waste water, but oh how Adenah wanted to douse herself with it. “Do you have kids?”

They were just about done unloading, even if the weather was slowing them down a bit. Nimueh hesitated, but accepted her offer, sighing in relief as the cloth soothed the skin at the back of his neck. He was- strangely surprised to hear she had children, although in hind sight he wasn't sure why - perhaps she'd just seemed young to him, or her seeking the aid of a stranger led him to assume she was on her own.

"Ah, well. Gifts are a must." He agreed with a sage nod and lopsided little smile. His eyebrows rose a bit at the question, and as he set the final box down and drew his arm across his brow, he nodded. "Mm. Five. My oldest two have children of their own, now." He said, proudly, as he moved to the side of the cart, considering it and how to proceed.

Adenah had never been as glad as she was when the last of her supplies had been unloaded. By the time it was all said and done she'd hopped up on a few crates to rest a moment, regardless of whether he wanted to continue at the moment or not. "Five? And a grandfather?" He didn't really look the part, but sometimes in the little quips he made Adenah could hear it. "I'm surprised you're out here on your own, then. I had you pegged as some sort of nomad." Adenah waved her hand, encapsulating the road, him and his general garb. She'd never seen a grown adult with that many crystal necklaces before.

Craning her head to the side, a few of Adenah's bright red curls slipped out of the bun she'd kept them in to tumble down her shoulder. "So, what do you think? Can it be fixed?"

Nimueh paused, arcing a brow at her as she motioned to him. "You aren't wrong. My family does travel more often than not." Perhaps when he was young, traveling so often would have been unthinkable, but after seeing how much Callum bloomed on the road ... it was impossible to suggest they stay in one place again. The few times his children brought it up, he would playfully deflect and say that Callum would just burn the house down again.

... So, the cart. "The wheel is destroyed - I can patch it up enough to get you to where you're going, but you'll need to replace it." He heaved the wheel from where it had fallen, then sat in the dust and dirt of the road, pulling tools from the bag he always wore at his hip. They weren't meant for woodworking, but for metal and to chip away at stones - but they would suffice.

At least she wasn't entirely wrong. He had the look of a traveler or at the very least someone who liked to emulate their lifestyle. "I don't think I ever could; all the time, that is. Lately I've been traveling more for work and I'm just not made for it." She motioned to the wheel. "Obviously." Adenah much preferred life in the city. She had everything she needed there - minus her kids, however - but once all this business was sorted then they would be together. Or so she'd been telling herself for the past some odd years.

"I'm just trying to get to the next village so if it can last that long I'll be happy." Shelling out funds to have the wheel replaced was a far cry from having to abandon her belongings on the side of the road. For a moment she simply sat and watched, unsure of where to help. She wasn't a stranger to hard labor, but....well, Adenah didn't like it, she was tired and also if she knew how to fix the damn thing she wouldn't have had to ask.

Still, she ought to offer..."What can I do to help?"

Nim had already sat, cross-legged, in the dirt beside the cart, the wheel leaning into his lap. At her offer, he tilted his face to look at her, offering a small, polite little smile. "If I can get this wheel working, I'll need you to put it on." He said, vaguely gesturing at her in what many might've taken as a rudely dismissive motion. Not that he noticed, as he had turned his attention back to his work.

He set upon the wheel, roughly hewing it back into shape - cleaning the shattered pieces out, and instead using his chisel to chip new, interlocking joints in the weaker parts so instead of falling apart, the wood would rely on the new points of contact to keep it together. He used an old scarf from his bag to wrap the sight of the break, painting the cloth first with glue that he normally used to fix stones together for his jewelry - he wasn't used to using so much of it, and mourned the fact he likely wouldn't be able to replace it for a while.

Finally, when he felt it was dry enough, he stood and rolled the wheel close to the cart, gesturing at Adenah to hold it upright so he could let it go and move, instead, to the cart itself, once again inspecting it as he considered how, best, to lift it.

"Oh, okay then." Kind of a rude gesture, but he was helping so she was trying to be nice about it. With little to occupy herself in the meantime, Adenah set about digging some cups out of her pack and dipping into her supplies. There wasn't much; a waterskin, some cheese and fruit but hopefully it would do. She'd certainly worked up enough for a snack and after pouring some water into a cup she offered it to him. "I've got snacks, too. Not sure what you'd like, but it's better than nothin'."

How many times had he fixed a wheel in the past? Certainly more than her, if he was able to decipher all of this so quickly. Adenah watched with an active gaze, trying to remember as much as possible while wisely giving him space. She'd been around her partner enough in the forge to know how hovering could damage the process, but...well, what if it happened to her again? She needed to be prepared.

When it came time for her to help she set her things aside and moved to hold the wheel.
