Wolfs Heart
After accidentally hatching quite a number of harpy eggs, Lannister's life at the swan sanctuary became busier than he had ever intended. As overwhelming as a bunch of young harpies running around had been, Lannister was a hard-working pae and did what he had to do. The real swans were always his first priority though since they were his true mission. Now that the harpies were grown it was almost like he had his own little village of sorts, it was strange to him how his little swan sanctuary could have grown to this.

On this particularly morning, there was a layer of fog hanging over the large pond, making the world seem quieter and more mystical. Lannister headed out from his hut, setting to do his morning walk around the pond. He stopped at the first swan be stumbled upon, offering it some blueberries from his pouch and stroking its head feathers as it ate.

Menelie
Almadelago, or Alma as her sister swans called her, had grown up at the sanctuary among both her harpy sisters and the true swans. Once they'd all reached adulthood, many of the harpies had left. Too many of them in one spot did make for chaos, after all. But this was Alma's home. She didn't want to leave.

This morning, she yawned and stretched in her nest, which she'd built in a tree a few yards back from the pond. She'd lined it with her own feathers, and those she'd found discarded from the swans, so it was soft and downy inside. She flew down from her nest, but froze when she saw Lannister. She'd been avoiding him, worried that he'd make her leave. She tucked her wings and hid behind her nesting tree as he approached.

Wolfs Heart
The swan Lannister had been feeding had noticed the harpy fly down from her nest and reached its neck up high and flapped its wings in response as the harpy hid behind the tree.

Lannister, always had a sense about the swans and understood them better than he understood any pae. His head tilted at the reaction the swan gave, and he was sure it wasn't in response to him feeding the swan a treat. Lannister glanced over his shoulder and studied the forest for a moment, but saw nothing.

Something had gotten the swan upset though. Lannister gave the swan one more blueberry before putting the rest of the handful back in his bag and then cautiously walking away from the swan, towards the forest.

Menelie
Alma was caught between two instincts as Lannister got closer. On the one hand, she really didn't want him to see her. On the other hand, she felt compelled to defend her territory. This tree, with its nest, was hers. Once he got too close for comfort, she came out from behind her tree, trying to strike a balance between intimidating but not too intimidating to be allowed to stay. Her wings fluttered behind her, ready to take off if needed.

Wolfs Heart
Lannister breathed a sigh of relief when one of the large harpies came from behind the tree. She was one of the ones with orange markings. A few of the harpies had orange markings near there eyes. If she had been an actual swan, Lannister would have had no issue identifying her despite their being similar looking swans. He would have known the tiny differences in the way she held herself or felt the small differences in her character. Lannister couldn't do that so easily with a harpy though. He would just not use her name since there were 3 possible names she might have.

"Hiding behind the tree made the swan feel like you were hunting her." Lannister noted gently. "Why are you hiding?"

Menelie
Alma stepped backward, taken aback and offended. "I wouldn't hunt the swans, they're my sisters," she said, folding her arms over her chest defensively. Lannister's next question, however, made her uncomfortable. It wasn't like her kind to hide, unless they were stalking, so maybe he did have a point there. "Most of the other girls have left," she observed. "But I don't want to." She lifted her chin a little, like she was daring him to defy her. "This is my home."

Wolfs Heart
"I know that," Lannister responded to her, still gently. He wasn't even necessarily being fatherly, he just naturally had a quiet and gentle nature. "She is just following her instincts," much like how the harpy was getting instinctively defensive, he noticed. "She is newer to the sanctuary too, that's why I was giving her some extra blueberries just now." He tried to give a reassuring smile. Lannister struggled with the balance of carrying for the harpies and the swans.

He narrowed his eyes thoughtfully as she addressed her concerns. Her posture was very telling that he needed to choose his words carefully. "This is your home." He confirmed. "Are you upset that they left or do you feel like you need to leave too, even though you don't want to?"

Menelie
Alma's eyes flicked over to the group of swans. She didn't know they liked blueberries. She wished she had the same sense for what they needed as Lannister did.

She turned her attention back to him and shifted her weight as she stood on her talons. "I know you didn't intend for us to be here," she said cautiously. "But I'm not leaving." She was a little sad that she and her sister harpies had grown too big to stay together, but that was the natural order of things. She hoped they were all happy in their new homes. Alma glanced back toward the pond. "I care about them too..."

Wolfs Heart
Lannister stared softly at the harpy, he could sense that there was some sort of conflict going on, and he wondered if it was something he would even be able to help with. "I am glad that you and the other harpies came here, you made it less lonely. I love the swans, but pae companionship is different. I am also happy for those that have chosen to stay. It is natural to want to go off and build your own life, but it is okay to build your own life here."

Lannister hoped that any of that might make sense to her. He smiled as he followed the harpy's gaze over to the swan who had settled down by now and was now gliding across the misty water. Lannister would never get over the beauty. He did need to get back to some of his morning duties, but he felt like there was a conversation that needed to be had with her. "It is good that you care for the swans, why don't you walk around the lake with me this morning?"

Menelie
Alma regarded him warily. "You aren't going to make me leave?" She asked suspiciously, even as she began to follow him. His words were reassuring but it wasn't in her nature to be trusting.

Wolfs Heart
Lannister shook his head, "No, I'm not going to make you leave." He answered her. "Unless something were to happen to put the swans in danger, but I know you wouldn't do that." Actually, Lannister didn't know that, he hoped that, but he was being careful with his words so that he didn't ruffle her feathers, so to speak. Ultimately, the swans needed to be his first priority, so he had to at least make his expectations clear. "This is your home, just as you said."

Menelie
Alma nodded once and folded her wings behind her, her posture relaxing significantly. "I appreciate that," she said. Nothing would happen to put the swans in danger as long as she was around. Not to mention the swans were more than capable of taking care of themselves. She'd seen them squabble over territory and dominance. They were fierce. A small smile appeared on her face. "I'd like to learn more about how to care for them, if you don't mind showing me," she said.

Wolfs Heart
Lannister was relieved to see the harpy relax. "I can do that," he agreed as he moved away from the tree. "I don't really do so much to care for them, my main job is to keep them safe here. So right now I'm taking a walk around the pond to see who is here, and make sure nothing looks... Unusual... I guess."

He motioned for her to follow him, "It is helpful to have some extra eyes on the pond to make sure nothing slips by. You have good instincts for these sorts of things." Lannister suggested, he now realized that the harpies who stayed had just as much of a need to find their place in the world as those that left.

Menelie
Alma followed as he motioned, doing a little skip to catch up. She nodded as he spoke. "I have a good view of the pond and the surrounding forest from my nest," she agreed. "I can keep watch from up there." After a pause, she had a question. "What kinds of things would be unusual?"

Wolfs Heart
"If that is something you would like to do." Lannister spoke with a firm nod. She had a good point that the nest being high up gave her a good vantage point, so he hoped she wanted to help in that way. "Any swan coming in acting strange or sick would be unusual. I can show you examples of some of their typical territorial or mating behaviors so you know what is normal, but you can always just call for me if you're not sure." Lannister through some blueberries into the pond as they walked. They would bob to the surface of the water for a moment before a swan would come by and pluck it. He held out his hand to the harpy, offering her some blueberries. "I also want to discourage predators from coming too close. Sometimes pae wander through, which is fine, but we need to make sure they're not here to hurt the swan."

Menelie
Alma nodded along as she listened. She made small noises and repeated bits of what he said back to him to show that she was listening and taking in the information. When offered some blueberries, she took them with a nod, then cast them into a different part of the pond. She'd been tempted to eat one but she suspected they weren't for her.

A slow smile spread across her face. "Leave the predators to me," she said confidently. "They'll soon figure out there's nothing for them here." And she might get a meal or two....

Wolfs Heart
Lannister glanced at the harpy's smile, glad she had taken to the idea of being on watch. He hadn't wanted to offer her one of the other jobs, like raking up swan droppings, worried that she would take offense at being offered a dirtier job. Watching over the swan flock did seem like it was a good match and would hopefully help her feel like she was a part of something. "Good, I know I can count on you."
