In theory, running on Earth should as easy as walking was on Velencya. The gravity differential was more than enough to justify that assumption. During her first weeks on earth, Fae-Fae often felt as though she was about to float off the ground with every step she took. She actually found it quite unpleasant and hard to adjust to... especially on the "buses" that passed for public transportation here. Just the slightest of bumps could be awfully disorienting. It had been a miracle she had retained her coordination on that battlefield.

So, ultimately, the gravity was more of a hindrance than she initially thought it would be. Worse yet, it presented an obstacle to training -- how was she supposed to get stronger when her movements met such little resistance? Traditional Vanguardian methods wouldn't suffice.

She had tried quite a number of human fitness practices to compensate, and would ultimately try quite a many more. Today, however, she was simply running, with the heaviest pair of boots on her feet she could find (and Caelyna would certainly be amused about where she had found them later). The harsh winter air added a refreshing layer of challenge to the activity she found invigorating. Her lungs strained to make the most of it. Finally, she could feel her body getting stronger.

That was, until, a characteristic signal she had programmed into her ComTech started to whine in her ears.

She had forgotten to charge it.

An amateur mistake that made her start to panic as her glamour started to disintegrate. Her little plume of blue hair was replaced by her mop of feathery gray. Her caramel skin flashed back to its normal muted lavender. And her freckles -- well. Her freckles stayed exactly the same. She had placed each one meticulously, after all.

Now her obviously alien appearance was exposed in broad daylight, for all the world to see. With gritted teeth, she dashed into a nearby alley and shrank against a picket fence that stood a ways in, while considering her next move. While she could simply warp back, it would add an extra layer of shame and an extra resource cost she would prefer to avoid.

Raksha had taken the afternoon to bounce around the city powered up some more- work in all her classes was light, at the moment, and the museum still being wrecked had given her a lot of free time that wouldn't last, but she didn't really know what to do with, either, so- bounce around the city looking for- something while listening to the world's stupidest music would do.

🎶I am an influencer, what can an influencer do?🎶

If nothing else, running around aimlessly was something to do, and helped her get used to the physical abilities part of this whole thing and the layout of parts of the city she'd never been to before. Raksha had to admit-it was nice to be able to jump like, three stories in the air? It was pretty cool. It definitely wasn't anything Raksha was capable of doing before.

🎶Film myself without a shirt on and influence you. 🎶

It was doing exactly this that led Raksha to jump off the roof of a building into an alley and almost crash directly into someone, because she hadn't been paying attention.

"Oh my god, I'm so, so sorry, are you okay, I didn't actually hit you, did I..." Raksha cut off when she actually saw the person she had just almost flattened- a purple elf in a jogger outfit.

"You… are purple? Uh."

🎶 A life on social media, the damage it will do is worth it in the end if I just get one person to-🎶

A senshi descended upon her suddenly, landing squarely in front of her, just when she had found a hiding spot -- and, besides Sailor Cosmos -- Fae-Fae had no idea which senshi she could trust. One had attacked her directly. One had killed Velyria. Others, she was sure, had endangered her comrades. Many, she was sure, would attack any Vanguardian on sight after what had happened.

Fae-Fae had no choice but to be cautious.

She immediately drew her weapon.

She pointed it forward. She did not fire. She waited, listened, considered the senshi's tone of voice, recognized an apology.

This wasn't a familiar face. And, it seemed, the senshi didn't recognize her kind either. Why else would she be surprised to see someone of a perfectly natural Velencian complexion?

The blaster was lowered, but she didn't put it away just yet. With her ComTech out of power, she needed it to talk. Her fingers slid through the input panel she had installed on it, a bit clumsily -- it was a recent modification she hadn't used much, after all -- and observed,

"You were not at the battlefield."

🎶Call your mother, give your mother a call🎶

When the stranger pointed the gun at her, Raksha backed away immediately, raising her hands in the air to show she didn't mean any harm. Okay, pointing weapons was a little rude, but it was fine. She had scared this guy, so. "I'm sorry, really, I was listening to music and I didn't see you, don't shoot me, please?"

🎶Won't take no time at all.🎶

Raksha paused at the mention of a battlefield, before shaking her head. "Uh, no. Sorry? Look, I'm guess from context clues you know about the whole senshi thing, and- I've been doing this for…" A moment to mentally count. "Six days exactly. No idea what battle you're talking about. Are you okay? Do you need help?"

Okay, it was really nerve-wracking to have a stranger point a weapon at her.

"I'm gonna turn my music off, alright?" Quickly, Raksha turned the song off and slipped her phone into subspace. As hard as that song went- it was uh. Look, if she was going to get shot by a weird purple elf, she wasn't going to do it to that song. If she was going to get shot, it should at least be to thematically fitting music.

Six days? Six days?

This senshi had been a senshi for only six Earth days? Fae-Fae blinked once, twice, stared a bit, then blinked again. The offer for help was lost completely in her surprise.

"Why did it take you that long to awaken?" she asked, plainly.

Quote:
Fae-Fae's question was met with an equal amount of surprise- it wasn't one she had really considered or ever even thought about before- the idea that she could have been awakened sooner was very much one she hadn't thought of before.

"Well… there are a lot of people on earth, and I think Viatrix had to get pretty close to me to realize I was an unawakened senshi? I'm not an expert but I think it probably has something to do with the fact we have to work in the shadows and also the fact there's like, eight billion people on earth? Hard to effectively search, even if you're trying."

"...Are you gonna not shoot me now? Also explain why you're purple?" After a second, Raksha realized the second question sounded kinda rude, and hastily added, "Not that purple is bad. You're very pretty, actually- love your hair- but I've never seen a person be purple unless they're undergoing some sort of severe medical emergency."

The explanation made enough sense for the intensity in Fae-Fae's expression to ease. It was somewhat disappointing to her, ultimately -- there was a small hope that perhaps, perhaps, the senshi's answer could reveal some way to help Caedus -- but it was a foolish hope, she supposed, to have for a spontaneous meeting like this.

"I will not fire," she promised. Her fingers continued to run along the input panel on the side of her blaster. "But I need it to talk to you. My primary communicator has run out of energy." With effort taken to ensure that the weapon remained pointed away from the senshi, she indicated at the ComTech at her wrist with a gesture. It was an embarrassing situation to be in, and this showed on her face.

She did have a notepad and pen she could use instead, but it was too slow for her liking.

"I am Velencian," she continued. "This is my natural complexion." This was said with a haughty, prideful air, in a silent agreement that it looked good. Of course she was pretty! All Velencians were, after all.

Especially the blue girls.

"Oh! Cool. Well, I'm glad you can still talk to me, even if your communicator tool is dead."

Velencian? Raksha searched her memory for a second, before realizing- "Velencian? Like the space aliens? You've been mentioned a couple times, just vaguely, but I didn't know what you looked like." Candy colored space elves. That kinda rules.

She didn't look angry- she looked like she was trying very hard to Be Normal and not vibrate out of her skin- Raksha obviously had a lot of questions she Desperately Wanted To Ask but was holding off on. "...Do you want help finding a new battery for it, or something? Or a solar battery, or a ride home? My car isn't that far away. It would suck if you were stuck in this alley until the sun set. I don't have anything better to do, either."

...She should probably also introduce herself, if she wanted to help. "Oh- uh, I'm Raksha. You?"

"I am Fae-Fae. It is a pleasure to meet you." The Cadet offered a small, cool smile. Even after everything that had happened, she wasn't about to forget her manners, especially towards a senshi who seemed genuinely harmless and friendly to her kind.

"My ComTech can use ambient energy to recharge, but it takes some time," she explained. So, she could, theoretically, hunker down and wait here, but would rather resume her running if she could. "It would be helpful if you could donate some of your energy."

Fae-Fae pulled out her Source Stone for Sailor Raksha to see. It was a small, white crystal that was practically a symbol of the Vanguard on its own. "It will not hurt you," she said. Her expression was the serious kind of reassuring. Some Earthlings, she remembered, were offended by this practice, so she wanted to emphasize to the new senshi that she meant to harm. "You can stop it anytime. It will pull energy from your body with your touch. You may become more calm, or it may make you a little sleepy."

"...Okay, sure."

It wasn't as if Raksha could leave someone who needed help all on their lonesome, anyway, and this asked practically nothing of her other than maybe she would have to go home and sleep it off.

Raksha reached out and gingerly touched the crystal- it could be fragile, and if she broke it, that would be very bad.

"If you need anything else- uh, obviously answering questions isn't the price for helping, that's just the right thing to do, but- you're from space, right? What's it like? Also, uh- how'd you find us? Did you find the Voyagers, or something?"

There were a lot of things Raksha was curious about, including Can I borrow a physics textbook pretty please, and also How is that crystal doing that, but those seemed like a good place to start.

This, truly, was not an ideal way to answer questions -- spontaneously, in an alley, to a well-meaning stranger. Fae-Fae was impatient to recharge her ComTech so she could continue her exercise. Not only that, but caution about what to share was at the forefront of her mind. How much did this new senshi really need to know about her people?

"Life in space is hard," she said, truthfully, in her melodious engineered voice. "You must make many sacrifices." Too many, she thought. Far too many. Creases of grief formed on her face without her noticing.

"Your Voyagers are unknown to us." In another situation, she might have been more curious. For now, she simply filed the information away in her mind for later. "We found Earth while looking for ways to save our people. It is a truly unique world."

PostPosted: Tue Feb 15, 2022 5:58 pm

"Oh. Um- I could see why that would be, with the deadly space radiation, and the limited supplies, and things." It was disappointing to learn, but she'd get over it.

More disappointing was finding out that Fae-Fae didn't know about the Voyagers at all. "Oh, they're uh, some science robots we sent out into space to study it. They have a map of how to get to Earth, too, in case anyone found them. They have some other stuff too, but- also a map."

Now was not the time to be infodumping about space probes, though. The nice alien had said their world needed saving. "If there's anything I can do to help with that, let me know, okay? And- I don't speak for the government, or anything, but as least as far as I'm concerned, your people are welcome to whatever you need from Earth. We have the resources." It was important to make sure that was known. Aliens? Sure.

Raksha didn't stop touching the crystal, but she did pull her burner phone out of subspace with one hand. "Do you have a cellphone? This isn't my real phone, but I have a burner cell for when I'm powered up. In case you need someone to touch a crystal again, or answer a few questions about Earth stuff, or something."

It was maybe kinda forward, but Raksha was curious and it was as good an excuse as any to offer her contact information, and she did mean it. Raksha just also hoped that would mean she might be able ask more questions. Or get her hands on a math textbook.

Burner phone.

Fae-Fae immediately perked up at that term, as it was familiar -- she had one as well. One of the charitable senshi had donated a number of them back when the Vanguard had first arrived on Earth. It was strange to suddenly establish a contact, so spontaneously, but this senshi seemed well-meaning enough. There was still so much work to do to understand Earth, to help Caedus. She couldn't pass up the offer.

With an emphatic nod that took over her entire torso in its movement, she reached into her subspace for her own phone and allowed Raksha to record its number.

"Thank you," she said, sincerely, graciously. "I must go. But I will remember you are an ally to the Vanguard."

After Fae-Fae put her number in, Raksha put her burner phone back away. Best not to have it out in the open too long, lest she drop or lose it. That would be… bad.

"It's no problem! Really. I like helping people, and you're just people from outer space, which is very cool, and I have a lot of questions, but I won't badger you with them, because you seem busy. Also, I want to do science education and stuff someday, so- this is kinda practice in answering questions and stuff."

Raksha didn't really know what a Vanguard was, but context clues meant it was probably whatever organization Fae-Fae was a part of. "The offer of help goes to your other alien friends, too. If they need questions. Or someone to come touch a crystal."

She paused for a second before adding, "If you can't reach me- the guy who awakened me, Encke, and his cat Viatrix would probably help. They're very kind. Anyway- see you later?"

Fae-Fae nodded gratefully, and held the names in her mind to record later. It was true, she needed more connections, more allies. So did the Vanguard.

She nodded in agreement, and went on her way.
