Noelani was feeling a bit bolder today and so she had wandered up further along the cove where she lived. Last time she had sneaked into the village with a cloak, but today she was simply wandering about and enjoying the ocean. The girl’s skirts twisted about her legs as the ocean breeze whipped around her and she found herself tilting her head back so that she could enjoy the sunlight on her skin. It was a lovely afternoon and Noelani would not trade it for the world, reckless as it was. Her family still preferred it if she kept herself hidden from most of the world simply because they were afraid of how outsiders would treat a hybrid such as herself but Noelani doubted anyone would come to such a remote place. Even if it was a little outside of the boundaries of her home the girl wanted to keep exploring while she was having such a delightful day.
What harm could possibly come of it?

It was always a nice surprise to visit Matori and Xylia always made certain to explore every part of the beach that she could while her family spent their time in the markets. Certainly she did enjoy shopping, especially with her siblings, but today the girl felt too restless to browse shop after shop. Instead she had promised to return by sunset and went off in search of something to entertain her along the shore. Soon enough though her steps had veered from the path and her morning walk turned into an afternoon expedition as she ventured further into the wild, towards a more untamed looking part of the beach that turned into a cove of cliffs and pure white sand.
A couple of alol had even caught her attention and Xylia found herself playfully chasing after them. “Hey, come back!” She just wanted to get a better look at their unique colors. Alol were so cute. Why didn’t she have one? The girl was so focused on chasing after the scurrying creatures, her eyes on the ground that she didn’t even see the other person as she barrelled into them. “Ooof!”

Noelani had been focused on watching the waves and did not even notice that someone else had approached. The sound of the waves crashing against the beach had covered any noises of someone running and the next thing the teen knew she was tumbling into the sands. A tangled mess of legs, some swallowed sand and most surely a bruise or two later had her coming out of her daze. “Are…are you okay?” She managed finally as she tried to move her legs away from the stranger who was sprawled out on the sand next to her. It was surely more shocking than anything but Noelani felt like it was nearly impossible to get her body to move after being knocked into like that.

Xylia swore she saw a bunch of floating rakan above her head as she crashed into the sands. A groan left her lips as she tried to scoot her body away from the stranger, her legs feeling almost like jelly from the abrupt stop after running for so long. It seemed the alol were lucky today since she had encountered this new obstacle. Xylia couldn’t even bear to glance at the girl from embarrassment. Out of all the things to do! She just hoped she hadn’t hurt the stranger. A quiet sigh left her lips before she slowly and somewhat painfully scooted back a bit more so that they could untangle their legs. “I’m sorry about that. I’m alright…are you?” She asked, finally glancing over, her gaze widening with confusion and shock as she tried to piece together the hybrid laying on the sands next to her. What in the? An Elaria hybrid?

“I-I am.” Managed Noelani as she too scooted back and moved her legs away from the stranger. Ever so slowly she sat up, dusting off her top which was covered in sand, but for now she stayed on the ground. “I think I’ll have just a bruise or two but nothing serious.” Maybe a scrape from hitting a rock with her elbow when she fell but no major bleeding or anything like that. Now that the shock was fading there was a rising fear that tightened her chest. Her family told her to not wander too far away from their cove! Now she was alone with a stranger who surely would…wait. Noelani blinked as she actually glanced at the other girl. She was definitely no matori and Noelani was at a loss with those strange traits! “A hybrid?” She found herself asking before a deep flush covered her cheeks at the slip. That was surely rude to say!

“That’s good.” Xylia managed with an awkward cough as she settled on the sand, her legs slowly crossing as she balanced herself better. It seemed they were both similar in that regard then. She was thankful that neither of them had taken too much damage from her foolish mistake. How klutzy! Xylia couldn’t help but to laugh when the same question that had crossed her mind actually escaped the other girl first. “Yes.” She managed before holding out a hand to cut off any potential remarks or apologies. “I’m sorry, I do not mean to laugh at the question but I wanted to ask the same thing. My parents are from Oba and Jahaur, what about yours? I’m guessing you have an Elaria mother based upon your Aishan traits?” Xylia could only admire the curled antenna. At least the stranger had inherited that, something that Xyila wished she had gotten from her mother. The antennae seemed so helpful with fighting, especially in the dark where she could use their sensitivity to track opponents.

“Ah.” Noelani nodded. So that made sense then. An Aishan hybrid like she was…just with the more favored race or rather better received? Not that she could blame the other earthlings considering all of the stories she had pieced together from the locals and her family. The extremists had caused the world a lot of pain and their daughters had been intent upon doing the same until the treaty occurred. And now she existed, a miracle created from the prayers of an Elaria and her love with an earthling man. “You’re correct. My mother is Elaria but my father is from Matori.” She managed with a sheepish smile. “They prefer if I stayed out of sight of town but I was not expecting anyone else to be here today.”

“That makes sense.” Xylia smiled warmly towards the other teen. It was not as if she had any personal beef with the Elaria and surely if someone had a child with an earthling that meant they were okay! If anything it was exciting to meet someone like the stranger sitting next to her. She seemed so nervous though and Xylia made certain not to move quickly or do anything other than talk with her while still sitting down. The last thing she wanted to do now was move and stand up when that could ruin this interesting moment. “I can see the Matori traits now that you mention it though you could have fooled me and said perhaps Zena too. Have you seen the icelings? They’re such a strange pale blue, not that blue is bad! Honestly you look very lovely. It just makes me wonder if the cold is what caused that because Zena is far too cold for me.” Perhaps she was rambling a little bit, but Xylia was just excited!

Noelani found herself warming up towards the stranger the more she spoke. It seemed she had no qualms about sitting on the beach next to her and she wasn’t attacking so….surely it was fine to linger around? She giggled at the flurry of words. “Thank you for the compliment.” She managed before shaking her head. “I’ve never really seen anyone other than a few Obans and Matori. I’ve lived here my whole life along this cove.” Even the few Obans she had seen had only been throughout the years whenever she was around town with her parents and grandparents. There had been a nice hybrid boy as well that she had met years ago when she was fairly young too. Other than that she simply relied upon the stories from her parents when they discussed their travels.

“You’re welcome.” Xylia’s smile brightened as she realized the other girl wasn’t upset at her. “I’ve seen a lot of foreigners since Oba’s capital attracts everyone to the markets.” She explained proudly. “It’s amazing how much can happen within our capital. So if you do venture away from Matori you most definitely have to visit! You’ll see people from Zena, Sauti, Tale, Jahaur, Chibale and maybe even from Yael and Belrea.” Xylia nodded before pausing. “Just ask for Xylia if you’re ever in Jatine since that’s my hometown.”

Noelani’s gaze widened as she listened to the list of people that Xylia had seen. “You’ve encountered a lot then.” She mused with wonder, almost envious of the fact that this other hybrid could go out and about without worries. She had seen so much of the world while Noelani had simply relied upon stories over the years to fill in the blanks. Though she did notice something that made her wonder. “Do you not spend a lot of time in Jahaur…is that alright to ask?”

Xylia nodded. She most certainly did! She was proud of her Oban heritage and enjoyed every moment in the city. It had so much life and activity that she would never get bored while roaming its streets. “Ah.” She blinked at the question before slowly nodding. “I do, but…” Xylia pursed her lips as she pondered over how to answer that exactly. “My mother has a family with mixed feelings about her decisions in life so we do visit, just not as often.” Xylia did like some of her Aishan relatives but others made her stomach turn. Not like all Obans were nice either, but lately Xylia just felt stifled whenever she saw her Aishan aunts. She had been raised in the desert surrounded by Oban culture despite her mother’s teachings about the Alkidike way and it seemed that influence had been stronger for her.

“It’s okay.” Noelani found herself reaching over to touch the girl’s arm. A bold move but she felt like the other girl needed some comfort. “My family doesn’t have any connection with my Aishan roots.” She expressed with a small smile. “I feel like I’m more earthling than anything which is why I’ll follow my father and become a treasure hunter. There’s no shame in that, right?” How was she supposed to worship a tree that she had never seen? Her own mother seemed hesitant about it as well, especially with her amnesia clouding most of those childhood affections and teachings. Noelani’s matori family had fully embraced her and she dreaded the idea of seeing any pure Elaria and their reactions to her.

Xylia reached up and gripped the other girl’s fingers, squeezing them to show her appreciation. “Thank you.” She managed before letting go again. “I suppose I always struggled with that because my mother loves Aisha and everything about Jahaur. When I was a youngling I always wanted to go the route of the sacred heart but now I’m at a loss. I don’t think I want to go and train in Jahaur even though one of my siblings has already committed to that path.” It was strange to think that she could confess all of her inner turmoil to a complete stranger but here she was doing just that. “But you’re right. Surely there’s no shame in embracing my earthling roots more.” Xylia agreed with a small smile. “I think I’ll still dance with the blades but I want to do it my own way without any restrictions.”

“You’re welcome. I feel as if my decision was a lot easier than yours because of my unique situation but I’m glad to help. No one should feel pressured or ashamed of following their heart.” Noelani replied honestly as she watched the other girl. “Dancing with the blades? That sounds interesting.” Surely it was a beautiful display. Was there some sort of special skill that Noelani did not know about? Not like she was going to be a swordsman. The girl was more focused on just finding adventure, solving puzzles and exploring more than actual fighting.
