Backdated to Jan 2, 2022.

The day after New Years, Jet was just finishing up patrolling and preparing to head back to Negaspace when he felt the aura of another General. Intrigued, he teleported close to where he felt the other, only to find--

“General Sylvite,” he greeted in mild surprise. She was one of the Queen’s trusted, and yet he knew very little about her. He knew little about many of the others, but now that he had plans in place, had a team in place for whatever might happen, he felt like maybe he should try to extend his own trust to others.

Although, he’d never spoken to her one on one, and never had any of his or Aquamarine’s subordinates mentioned her.

“I hope you had a good holiday,” he said pleasantly enough, before looking around to see exactly where they were.

Let me know if anything needs to be changed! I left it vague so she can be anywhere that makes sense!

Sylvite was in the park, hanging upside down on a tree branch by her knees. It turned out, it was pretty effective. You couldn't think about bad stuff too much when all the blood from your body was flooding your brain.

Of course the downside was that she was either going to have to stop eventually or pass out, but she was gonna cross that bridge when she got to it.

The other downside was that with all the brain-blood, she couldn't sense auras, which meant that she was not really ready for company. She definitely wasn't ready for Jet.

She couldn't help the gasp, or the way that she twitched. It sent her toppling out of the tree. Luckily her magical reflexes kept her from breaking her neck or something, but she still landed weirdly on her side with a wince before she went still and started blinking up at the other General.

What was she even supposed to say right now? Hi, you murdered my friend? That was just about all she could think about right now. Jet was probably a really well rounded person, but his face was making that one awful moment play on repeat in her imagination.

"Hi," she said, but managed not to say the rest. "My holidays were pretty good, how about yours?"

They'd actually been cramped and kind of awkward in her parent's tiny apartment, but she didn't say that, either.

Jet winced as Sylvite fell from where she'd been hanging in the tree, and tilted his head to watch her curiously. She seemed like she was okay, but he still wanted to look her over to make sure medical attention wasn't needed.

"They were fine. I don't usually celebrate with anyone other than Aquamarine. We don't really have any other family," he shrugged lightly, and then offered his hand to help her up if she needed it. He and Aquamarine only had each other, so the holidays were just like any other day to them.

There was something about her demeanor though. Was it something he said? Did he upset her by suddenly showing up? "I'm sorry to disturb you," he tried, because he wasn't sure what was off about talking to her, just that there was something.

"Aquamarine's your boyfriend?" she asked, actually curious.

She knew they'd stuck together pretty close during the secret meeting, and the generator battle, and that orientation thing where they'd talked to all the new recruits. They had the same office, too, so maybe Sylvite had her suspicions, but it was always better when she could get stuff confirmed firsthand.

Slowly, she made her way to her feet.

"It's okay. You're not bothering me. It's probably good if we talk," she said, and with all of her effort, she managed to smile.

"I mean, maybe if I get to know you better, I won't just think of you as the dude who killed my mentor anymore."

Wait. No.

She'd said it out loud that time.

She gasped as she sucked in a quick breath. The smile was gone, just like that. Instead, she bit down hard on the insides of her cheeks, like that would keep the words from getting to him. It was too late for that, though, and she knew it. Her cheeks were quickly turning pink.

“Something like that, yes,” Jet confirmed her question about Aquamarine being his boyfriend. He had a feeling that Aquamarine would prefer being called Jet’s boyfriend over what they really were. Aquamarine wasn’t much for displays of affection, much less expressing feelings, so explaining their relationship was a little complicated.

He tilted his head curiously at Sylvite as she got to her feet. He’d killed her mentor? Why would he--

“Ochre betrayed you by defecting,” he said quietly. He held no feelings of remorse for traitors, nor for what he did, but he did believe that the dead deserved at least some reverence, if only to be polite.

“He betrayed the Negaverse -- the Queen. Right in front of her. He wasn’t your mentor any longer. There is no proof that he even remembered who you were.”

So that was what she thought of him. And she was still calling a traitor her mentor.

“What would you have done? Let him go free when the Queen was standing right beside you?”

"No, no, no, you did the right thing," Sylvite said quickly, even though she could already feel her face and her throat and her head getting all hot and weird.

Why did she have to say that? Everything had been fine.

"Obviously," she said, and swallowed against all the bad feelings.

She was upset about the treason. She was upset about the betrayal. She wasn't upset about what Jet had done, definitely not. At the very least, she wasn't trying to accuse Jet of cold blooded murder to his face.

"Just," she swallowed again, "Like, imagine if Aquamarine betrayed the Negaverse, and then died immediately." She blinked at him and hoped that wasn't a bad thing to say. Maybe she should've picked a different example, she didn't wanna be making any implications, but she also didn't know anyone else who Jet might be friends with.

"It'd take you a while to process it all, right?"

Jet watched Sylvite as she answered, as she seemed to shift through her emotions. Ochre had been an Eternal Senshi, so it wasn't surprising that there were those in the Negaverse who had known him well, had maybe even respected him at some point. Jet

But when they needed his help the most, when they were being guided by the Queen and General Sovereigns with direct orders to protect the generators on that hilltop, Ochre had chosen that moment to discard his medals, one given specially to him by the Queen herself, and take a Princess's offer to help him defect.

"That's a horrible comparison because Aquamarine would never betray the Negaverse," Jet frowned, although it was not unkind. He wasn't going to try and convince her that his decision to end Ochre's life quickly and as painlessly as possible was the right one. But it had been his decision and he would have done it again in a dire situation like that, when every hit against the generator meant less time they had to protect it.

He let out a soft sigh, because he hadn't expected a conversation like this when he approached her. He thought maybe he could ask her if she would like to help him with his upcoming mission, but it was clear that she was emotionally compromised at the moment. Maybe in the future when she did have time to process Ochre's death, and her place in the Negaverse.

"You were captured by the White Moon too, weren't you?" he asked quietly. "In those cells, it was difficult to make out who was there… I remember Zircon-- she was next to me. And I know Prehnite was rescued from there, too. But so were you. And Ochre," he said in a way that was hopefully obvious that he was welcoming correction if he was wrong.

"He endured what they did to him, to all of us, and he still chose to go with them. He would have left you for dead on that hill, General. He chose his side. Even if he still remembered and cared about you, as long as the White Moon sees us as a threat-- or even as something they don't understand, they'll do everything they can to get rid of us."

No, hopefully Aquamarine wouldn't betray the Negaverse, but that was kind of the whole point of the example. Sylvite had lost a bunch of people to treason at this point, and she hadn't been expecting it from any of them. That was like, the whole reason that it was hard to process.

She didn't say any of that, though. Making Jet think about what the tables being turned and her ending up killing his traitor boyfriend was probably not the best way to make friends.

Sylvite kept her mouth shut until he asked about the kidnapping.

"I was there, yeah," she said, rubbing at her wrists. The rope burns had healed a long time ago, but she could swear that she could still feel them itching sometimes, when she thought too much about what had happened.

"I was fourteen and I'd just gotten recruited like three weeks before. When they realized I didn't have any information for them like the other ones, they left me to die. Stopped giving me water. That's when I realized what kind of monsters we were dealing with, and I promised myself that if I got out I'd do whatever I could to be a good soldier to the Negaverse."

She took a deep breath and tried to keep from rubbing and scratching at her arms by just fidgeting with the fabric of her gloves.

"And yeah, I'm really mad at Ochre for leaving us to go try and help some Princess. Like, furious."

She hadn't said in so many words, not before this, and it came out louder than she'd been expecting. Her eyes flashed. Her fingers shook. "But like, he's dead, so there's not much there for me to be mad at, which makes the whole processing thing weird, like I said."

She looked up, and forced her hands to her side. "Sorry if I'm like, associating you with that moment, and projecting, I guess. I'll figure it out."

“I’m glad you made it out in one piece,” he said quietly. At least physically, knowing that Zircon hadn’t been as lucky. “I’d just been promoted not long before that all happened. Unfortunately I didn’t have any information for them either. Nor would I have given it to them,” he admitted with a low growl as he glared down at his feet. “Aquamarine saved me back then. Saved me before that too,” he said, even though she hadn’t pressed more about him.

He wasn’t going to tell her that Aquamarine was loyal to him, and if Aquamarine had betrayed the Negaverse, it would only be because Jet had done so first. But that would never happen, so it wasn’t worth thinking about.

“You have no reason to be sorry. If I hadn’t done it, maybe someone else would have. Or maybe he would have escaped. Or maybe he would have been pulled back by the Chaos that flooded the hill, I don’t know,” he admitted. He still didn’t regret that he did it, but he was a little concerned that Sylvite, and possibly others, didn’t think a swift death would benefit them all.

If the Queen got her hands on Ochre, what would have happened then?

“I’m sorry things turned out the way they did,” he said instead, because he was. He didn’t want others to commit treason. He didn’t want to be known as the executioner of the Negaverse. He was in the Information Branch! But he also knew that if their information was leaked, it could be a detriment to all of the Negaverse and those he cared about.

"I'm glad you have Aquamarine," said Sylvite, because it wasn't like she could think of anything else positive to say about the whole torture situation. This was also like the second or third time that Jet had talked about him, and he seemed to like talking about him more than anything else she'd mentioned. "It sounds like he's really good for you."

She sucked in a breath. "And, like, the way stuff turned out, yeah, it sucked, but I'm trying to learn from it, I guess? I gotta remember to, like, be friends with everybody, and check in with everybody, so that the don't feel the need to go looking for that from someone else."

It wasn't like she hadn't been trying before. Ever since the first betrayal, Cybele's, she'd been setting up lots of meetings with her subordinates and lots of hang outs with everyone else.

She had to do better, though. Clearly, that was what was going on here.

After all, she hadn't checked in with Ochre.

"I can check in on you, too, I guess," she said, and tried smiling. "Like, are you okay after that whole fight? Do you want ice cream?"

Ice cream was the best for smoothing things over.

“You don’t have to be friends with everyone, you know,” Jet pointed out, but that probably sounded mean, so he tried to explain. “Some people just aren’t good for others. I normally can’t stand Ashanite, but I’m willing to work with him. I can respect him,” to an extent, even if he still got on his nerves a bit, “But I doubt we’d call each other friends anytime soon. You don’t have to be friends with me, either. I get it. I killed someone you cared about once. Hurting you wasn’t my intention. Protecting everyone else that he could have hurt with the information he knew…”

He paused and shook his head, because he didn’t know where he was going with that. He cared more than Aquamarine thought he should. But the Negaverse was the only family he had. Aquamarine was the closest family he had.

The offer for ice cream was a little surprising, but he couldn’t help but smile and nod. “Sure, I’d like that. And yeah, I’m okay. Are you okay?”

She was… sweet. A little naive still, but she wasn’t much different in age than he was.

“I had a brother who was in the Negaverse,” he suddenly decided to share. He’d told Axinite and Faustite, so why not…? If she was going to try and be friends with everyone, she might as well know. “A Senshi killed him. He was protecting me and Aqua from her finding out we were associated with him. We both joined the Negaverse right after that. Aqua has been there for me since.”

So yes, Aquamarine was good for him. He didn’t think he would have lasted as long as he had without him.

Of course she had to be friends with everyone in the Negaverse. At the very least, she had to try. If they really hated her, she could take a hint and leave them alone, but she didn't think it had come to that with anybody. Maybe with Faustite, things were kinda weird with Faustite, but she was trying, even with him.

She was gonna do her best with Jet, too, and she nodded when he explained about the information that Ochre might have been able to give to their enemies, even if her eyes were a little bit blank.

"I'm sorry about your brother," she said, 'cause while she didn't talk about death much, she at least knew to say that much. "That sucks, too. Order sucks."

She didn't say anything else about Aquamarine, since she didn't actually know him, but she did think that maybe she should try talking to him later, since he obviously meant to much to Jet.

"And yeah, I'm fine. I didn't get hurt or anything." Her head might've been buzzing, still, but that wasn't stopping, so she'd been trying to figure out how to just live with it.

"If you want the ice cream now, I know a really good place that's still open," she said, and she offered her hand, 'cause sweets always smoothed over any awkwardness and made things better, right?

Plus, now that they were talking more, Jet almost seemed like the kind of person she would've liked to go get a snack with.

Jet nodded, again wondering why he bothered sharing that with her. Maybe because he was trying to give her a chance at that friendship that she wanted, even if he didn’t think it was possible for everyone to be friends with everyone. Or even for her to be friends with everyone.

But if he didn’t give her a chance at trying, then he was part of the problem.

“I’m glad you didn’t get hurt,” he said, and felt himself let out a breath of relief. “Yeah, let’s get some ice cream. I’d like that.”

Even if things were still awkward between them, he wanted to do what little he could to try.
