Mr. Maddox stood at the front of classroom 197, teaching English 11, at Hillworth. Or at least he would be on a normal day. Today instead, he sat at his desk and listened as some of the boys taught the class. They had been asked to select one of their favorite subjects (and no, beating people up was not a suitable subject) and with props, teach the class about it. Each student had a half class period to teach on it, and this moment was Davie Jaimeson's.
Davie was a little nervous, as well as he should be, he chosen to teach about rare plants and flowers to a class of boys who were obsessed about their masclinity and being rough and tough. Not the wisest idea, but Mr. Maddox had a policy of not interfering in the politics of his students, unless they came to blows.
Some boys in the back were snickering at Davie, who turned to Mr. Maddox, "Mr. Maddox," he said in a somewhat calm, more confident voice. "I'm feeling a lesson improvision is needed for the attention of my classmates, is that permissionable?" He asked. Mr. Maddox nodded.
Davie approached one of the boys in the boys in the back of the room, who had been snickering at him. "Erik." Erick jerked toward him; he hadn't been paying any attention. "What would happen to all of us right now, if at this exact moment, every single plant and fungi on the planet died?" "Uh?" Erik blinked confused. "Nothing? We'd all go living?"
Davie shook his head; it was so sad. "Humans and animals breathe oxygen to live - they breathe out?" "Uh, Carbon Dioxide?" Another student answered. Davie nodded. "And plants, like trees and flowers?" "They breathe Carbon Dioxide and release Oxygen," a third student answered. Davie nodded again. "Plants and fungi are the only known organisms to create Oxygen. So, I ask you once more, Erik, what would we do without plants?" Erik looked horrified. "We'd all suffocate." Mr. Maddox smiled. Davie had gotten the class's attention. Could he hold it though?
Davie then briefly used a web of rope to show the relationships of many different animals and plants - so that if somehow just one organism was taken out of the picture, even say a cockroach, it could negatively affect everything else in the ecosystem including humans.
Finally, he showed them one, just one rare flower. One he knew they would they think was awesome or at least something exciting; Rafflesia. "It is the largest flower in the world, sometimes 2-4 wide, red with what looks like sores on its petals. It only blooms once every twenty years. And it's more common name is the 'Corpse Flower'." A bunch of hands shot up, including Erik's. "Why is it called that?" They were all interested. "Because it smells like one... seriously."
Well that is one way to get them involved.. Mr. Maddox thought with a chuckle, as the bell rang. "Great job, Davie, A+. You would make a great teacher."
