Valnyr had found succour in the home of a young Squire and with it, found herself surrounded by the idealism and endless optimism of a young human who saw possibility in, well, everything. It had been refreshing, but in the face of overwhelming odds, Valnyr was beginning to suspect that more than dreams, hope and love were required in order to succeed in what she needed to do. After all, in choosing to side against her Commodore, and in aiding the senshi in saving Caedus (though she herself had done little directly), she had all but condemned her planet to death.

The commodore had been clear of course, that now that such a decision had been made, they needed to find a means of addressing it. They had limited time to find an answer, and in the end, she was responsible for a part of this conundrum. Had she been ruthless enough to sacrifice him for the possibility that it would have worked, then perhaps they would have already gone home and simply waited...and yet she hadn't.

Granted she wasn't convinced that Caedus was completely safe. She knew nothing of the Commodore's personal whims and there was every possibility he was humouring them until such time as he could get his hands on Caedus and finish the job. She didn't know how his mind ticked, not really, and while she shouldn't think ill of him...given what he had done, the weapon he had built, she had been shown that he was willing to do anything in order to succeed.

Caedus still lived and arguably, he could still be killed.

A quick trip to the Cauldron and then...

Best not to think about it. The young woman had adorned her glamour for several weeks and buried her head in numerous books. The library had become a rather common haunt for her, and yet there seemed to be nothing there to provide her with the measure of guidance she sat. Somewhat out of ideas, the woman had then acknowledged that perhaps Earth didn't hold the answers and she might need to look a little further afield; and where better to look further afield than to those who could travel through the stars?

The only puzzle was when it came to locating them and while her comtech could help her track them, the issue of broaching the subject then became another issue entirely. After all, there was no guarantee that they would respond kindly to her after all was said and done, and thus, she now found herself meandering quietly through the shopping districts outskirts in the hope that she might find someone...and more importantly that they might be willing to start a dialogue with her.

...Though maybe she would avoid asking any specific questions about their Homeworld from the get-go, that probably wouldn't go well for her.

Shopping districts like this were great places for an energy pull. All you had to do was stay within range, keep yourself hidden and focus. If you got enough practice in you could pull without having to look at your targets. With patience and finesse, it barely even made a difference -- maybe a couple of people would yawn or suddenly need to sit down, but it was nothing that would raise alarm. All in a day's work to feed Metallia.

Julian had done it plenty of times, years ago. He figured he would find a Negaverse agent trying to fill their quota around here eventually. Either that, or someone would plant a youma here eventually as surveillance to track enemy patrols. He decided to scope the place out powered down. Now he was meandering around the back-lots, occasionally rapping at dumpsters to see if anything would pop out.

Nothing so far.

She hadn't intended to go down a back alley, it seemed entirely counter intuitive to what she had been attempting to do. However when she had seen another wander in quietly, curiosity got the better of her... and well, she followed too. Admittedly she didn't know what she hoped to achieve by taking the action that she did. For all intents and purpose it was probably a total waste of time, but any opportunity to observe a human had been an educational moment for and so she found herself on the tail of the gentleman who had slipped out of view of the rest of the populace.

It turned out that this was indeed going to be another rather educational experience for her as well, given that he had started to rap against dumpsters and other boxes nearby. She'd never seen them do that before, and the best that she could come up with was that perhaps he might be hungry?

But he seemed well dressed, why would he need food that had been thrown away...? She kept her distance and peered out from the shadows with continued curiosity, determined to understand what he might be hoping to achieve.

All the while, completely unaware of the large creature looming behind her. She had become its prey and rather than growl to give away it's location, the slavering creature was simply padding quietly behind her, a hint of shimmering eyes the only indication that it was there...

Only a chance glance in the right direction alerted Julian to the lurking youma. He sighed and rolled his eyes at himself, realizing the foolishness of his approach, as well as the fact that, once again, one was showing up when he thought there weren't any around.

Seriously, though, why the <********> was he doing this powered down??

He needed to act fast. Thankfully, there was another dumpster nearby that was a little more out of sight. He dashed over to it, hopped in, powered up, and made use of his little shadow trinket -- reappearing some meters away in the shadow of a building on the opposite side.

With rubbish hanging from his shoulders and hat, of course. There was a stray bit of plastic bag on his spade, even.

Asphodel Knight felt thoroughly ridiculous, but better ridiculous than some innocent person getting eaten. He dashed to close the distance between himself and Metallia's pet, and lunged at it with his newly-decorated weapon. The civilian would hopefully just run off and not ask any questions.

Wait, where had he run off to?

Valnyr had blinked and while she thought she might have seen the man literally jump in to the dumpster, she had assumed that dumpster diving wasn't meant to be taken literally. She was learning how certain amounts of nuance worked and that had seemed to have been the appropriate read on it. Except by the time she had been leaning out, prepared to make her approach towards the dumpster to investigate it further... A Knight appeared out of nowhere.

Well not nowhere-nowhere, he had come from somewhere nearby and given his rapid approach and the brandishing of a weapon she could only assume this meant trouble for her. Admittedly that made no sense as she wasn't being obvious about who she was, she'd thought her glamour had held up, and though she had been about to change her tact to urge him to think twice -

He hit something behind her.

The hair on the back of her neck lifted as shock rippled through her and she ducked out of the way, spinning round to see the beast that had been behind her.

Was that a -

"Youma?" she asked curiously. The human woman mentioning a creature she probably shouldn't have knock as she took several steps back. She'd never seen one before, she'd never had the chance to even when she had been welcomed on a patrol. They really did lurk in the shadows, didn't they?

The youma in question had quickly snapped its jaws around the handle of Asphodel's spade, and he was wrestling to break it free. Still, through the struggle, he cast his gaze over to the civilian and said, "Yes. Hold on a second," before twisting his torso in an attempt to throw it off. His reward for his effort was a snarl and a dripping of violently-colored fluid from its fangs that ate through the fabric of his pants.

"Acid bite, are you ******** --" he sighed, and yanked his arms back, and finally freed his spade again. Annoyance creased his features as he regarded the woman again. "This thing used to be a person. Then the Negaverse --"

An abrupt sinking of fangs into his ankle cut him off. The youma bit straight through the boot. Asphodel shouted gracelessly in pain, and said, again, "Sorry. Hold on a second." A repetitive bang-banging followed from the sound of his spade bashing the youma's head repeatedly, with each hit seeming only to tighten its grip on him.

There were certain things that the young man was saying that caused her pause. The implication of what those words meant, those phrases, what the Negaverse might be doing were of genuine concern. However none of her questions would be answered if the Knight was to remain under the continuous assault of this eldritch looking monster. She knew she was supposed to be more cautious in these circumstances, knew all too well that one shouldn't reveal themselves; but when it came to the difference between finding answers (and potentially avoiding someone losing their foot)...and simply watching as disaster unfolded, it was safe to say that she knew which outcome she preferred.

It was with a small grimace that the young woman stepped back and with a deep breath, tapped at her ComTech to disable her glamour. It was far from an impressive feat, it didn't come with any of the flare that any senshi might have, but her secret was revealed all too quickly as she came to Asphodel's assistance.

...Not that she could do much.

But she could do something.

She pulled the pistol from its holster and having ensured it had ample charge, pointed it towards the youma and fired. It was unlikely to do any significant damage and there would be no dusting from her weapon. However, the sudden jolt and numbness might stun it for enough time to release the garden utensil the man appeared to be armed with. Perhaps it would buy him enough time to hit the 'thing' a little harder or a little faster until it ran away.

Given that Valnyr hadn't really seen a Youma before she would be in for a little bit of a shock when she discovered that they tended to explode in to dust.

Asphodel breathed a long, exasperated sigh of relief when the youma scattered to the urban winds, and, unceremoniously let his spade clatter to the ground while turning to face the "civilian" fully.

"Thanks," he started -- and then, "Oh." He blinked observantly at the pastel skin and familiar uniform. "You're a Vanguardian. Huh..." He shifted between his feet in thought, wincing somewhat when his weight was on his injured ankle. The boot had been eaten through in some places, and the exposed flesh beneath was a bit burned and discolored. "So you can make yourselves look human? Smart. Don't worry though, I won't tell anyone I saw you."

So angry chaotic animals exploded. Huh, well who would have thought, eh? She made a mental note to document that observation at a later point in the evening. To her the youma was very much dead, but in the distant future she might find out that they could only be expunged by very specific methods which few on earth had access to.

Nevertheless, her shock was short lived as Asphodel had turned to her and well, there was something about the tone of his voice that knocked some sense into her. She blinked rapidly and levelled her gaze back on him, affording the opportunity to check him over at the same time. She was no medic but she knew some of the basics so if he was bleeding out...

Except he wasn't really bleeding so much as uh...

What had happened to his skin?

"You are welcome," she replied after a moment and shook her head. "It's ok, so long as people are friendly and won't hurt me it's ok for them to know," she added. She shouldn't have been so relaxed about someone knowing who and what she was, but when it came to these individuals she wanted to be on their side. Not only did they seem to be fighting for the same thing as her, they had a miracle she very much wished to study!

"Do you need help with that?" she asked finally and pointed at his ankle. "I have a gel," she offered and cleared her throat. "I was unaware they could do... that," she added and shook her head.

She knew of venomous animals but was this a venom? It looked like something else entirely.

After a moment of pondering, Asphodel shrugged and said, "Sure, I'll take a gel. I should be fine though, I heal pretty fast." He sat down on the asphalt, not too concerned with their presence in broad daylight now that the neighborhood youma was taken care of. He was alert, always wary of new auras that could pop up on his intuitive radar, but calm.

"You're a good shot," he said, "and I always appreciate meeting a Vanguardian. I'm Asphodel Knight." His tone was diplomatic and genuine. There was plenty more to learn from Velencya's people, he was certain, and he was eager to get to know them more. "I hope Earth's been treating you well."

"From acid?" Valnyr sounded incredulous as she fished around in her jacket pocket for the gel she was looking for. She didn't tend to pack much of anything, but it was always in hindsight that she discovered that she should really be more prepared. They had the capacity to access storage and yet here she was with very little to her name. It would be something she would remember for later and she would make sure that she fixed that but for now...

She held out the gel after clicking it open. While she had no issue applying it, she didn't like to be presumptuous. In her time on Earth (short as it was), she had come to realise that some humans very much preferred to have their personal space. She wanted to make a good impression, was desperate, to make that impression so that she could find friends. Quite honestly, she wanted to make up for what they had done as well.

She might well have been trying too hard.

"Thank you though, I've been practicing," she replied after a moment, her smile sheepish. "At least it paid off this time though?" she added and then motioned to the pile of dust, something that she hadn't expected to see.

"I'm Valnyr," she continued. "And earth is treating me very well considering we may not have made the best impression recently," she admitted and gave a wave of her hand. "Do they all do that?" she added and eyed the dust again. "And more importantly does it do anything if it gets on you because I may need to rub you down before you get anymore wounds," she finished.

Asphodel accepted the gel with a grateful nod, and set to work tending to his injury. "To be fair, I don't think we left a good impression either," he said, honestly, and shrugged. That whole battle had been an utter disaster from start to finish. The Negaverse had plenty to celebrate from it, he was sure.

"But yes." He continued with Valnyr's question. "They all do that. The dust isn't really a big deal. Worry more about the fact it isn't actually dead." There was a sigh of irritation, and a shake of his head at that. "It's going to reform in the Rift and come back out here eventually. Pain in the a**."

As he applied the gel, he winced and sucked a breath in through gritted teeth.

"If we had been surrounded by our enemies, the ones who threatened our home, I don't think we would have been as rational or calm either," she pointed out with sincerity. It had taken her a while to reflect on everything that had happened, but in the end, she had never been able to accept what the Commodore had done was right. He had pinned an 'ally' down, he had demanded they trust him, someone who had never earned their trust, and then he had gone one step further.

...He had forced them to stare an ultimatum in the eye, to willingly allow another to die, on the off chance his plan might work. If she had learned anything from her time with some of the Order, it was that the sacrifice of any life, especially a life stolen, was not something they could abide. To allow that to happen would be to allow the Negaverse to take a soul on the condition that they might stop hurting people.

The plan could have worked out, she didn't really know and probably never would, but she could empathise with why her allies had immediately become defensive and in some cases, had fought for their lives.

Rumour had it it wasn't just some of her own who had died that day.

Rumour had it that while her kind may have perished, her allies had lost far more.

She understood that anger and that hurt.

"It's easy to say that you have your reasons, that it's necessary, but you will have to forgive me when I say that I don't believe we should be sacrificing any other lives or planets to save our own," she pursed her lips into a thin line. "If we sink to that level we're no better than the creatures who destroyed ours because they thought we were inferior," she pointed out.

"Thank you for the lesson though," she smiled and motioned to the dust. "Though I am exasperated that it is not a permanent end," she admitted and shook her head. It would return and cause further chaos, it would threaten another at some point, and deep down she genuinely didn't appreciate that.

"Surely there is one though?" she asked finally and raised a brow. "Something more permanent that renders them vulnerable and um...mortal," she mused.

The Velencians were a politically complex bunch, that was for sure. Asphodel hardly knew the half of it, but this was the second time one of them had critiques of their own leader to spare. He listened appreciatively to the Vanguardian's response to his thoughts on the battle, and by the end of it had taken on a more relaxed stance. The shadow of a smile could be seen behind his draperies.

"You don't like unnecessary sacrifice," he observed. "I respect that. The Negaverse makes too many. Each youma you see is proof of that."

Handing the gel back, he stood back up.

"They're all people who got pumped so full of Chaos, it stripped their humanity away. That's a fate worse than death. The majority weren't voluntary, naturally. Sometimes it just happens by accident," he said this bitterly, "but the Negaverse finds that risk acceptable even if it's condemned on paper. That's the guardians of Earth for you, treating their own people like cattle. Thinking they have the right to decide who lives and dies."

He said this extremely bitterly.

"There's probably a way, but if it is, it's not in abundant enough supply." Otherwise there wouldn't be so much of a need to run around dusting the damn things. "That's a problem, honestly."

"No matter what world we visit, or life we find...even when we study it we send it back home," she explained. To her this implied that a part of their duty was to ensure they did not harm the local populace, sentient or otherwise. It wasn't their world, those lives weren't theirs to judge, and while they might be curious about them in the end they were all afforded the respect they deserved.

...Until they had arrived on Earth and certain members of the Vanguard had forgotten that.

"You're definitely smarter than some of the life that was brought on board, but the principle still applies," she smiled and shook her head. If anything she found humanity enchanting, though a little disheartening on occasions given their penchant for hurting their own world. All hope wasn't lost though, she had seen so many individuals who actively sought to save their world and that was reason enough to help them.

It was reason enough for her to cheer for them.

Nevertheless the revelation of what a youma was shocked her to the core and for a small amount of time she wasn't sure how she should respond. Disgust was certainly an emotion she felt, though not towards them, so much as those who had transformed them. They had been stripped of their freedom, their choice, and turned in to monsters.

"Can you turn them back?" she asked after a moment. It might have seemed like a ridiculous question, but if they were all truly innocent and there was a way to save them, then would the permanent solution not simply be to save them?
