It was with trepidation that Valnyr had drawn near her own kind again. Though a handful of them had found themselves in the Celestial Theatre, far more of them had chosen to go with their Commodore. She didn't necessarily blame them either; there were those who were completely loyal to him, those who were truly uncertain of what the future might hold if they didn't follow him, and those who had been incapable of making any decisions given that they too had become casualties in the chaos.
Yet even after all that, the Commodore had extended a hand and while she hadn't necessarily taken it and had stayed in the company of a generous Squire and her family, that didn't mean that she wasn't aware that she could come back if she so choose. Her reluctance to return was entirely personal and though she had assumed that the Commodore held no malice that didn't necessarily mean that her peers didn't.
Yes, she knew... In the end, there would always be a measure of disdain between some of them.
But there would also be others who, like she had tried to do, found a measure of understanding.
It was for this reason that the Velencian was carefully examining her pistol as she eyed up the targets she had set up not far from their safe haven. She'd seen it on tv, little cans and bottles lined up on a wall at various distances that she could attempt to shoot. She hadn't been expecting company, but some healthy competition wouldn't have gone amiss. To be fair, some healthy competition and some moving targets would probably have been a much more useful training opportunity... But for now, she'd work with what she had.
If company came, then all the better!

Naeria could not blame the members of the Vanguard who had chosen not to follow the Commodore at the end of the hilltop battle. What Lyndin had done had been horrifying. Naeria wanted no part of it, and she had not been able to look at him the same way, or to speak to him at all, really, since the incident. She had only gone with him because she'd assumed he was returning to Velencya, where she'd meant to tell the council and the people about what was happening, to ask for aid in finding way of saving their worlds that did not rely on the cruelty of the Negaverse. Her voice might not have gone very far, but she'd been willing to try. Things had changed, after that. They were stuck on Earth looking for solutions anyway, each in their own way. It had been nothing but a relief to know that the five who remained with Order had survived, and she smiled when she came across Valynyr and her setup with the cans, and the blaster. "Practicing?" she asked.

She couldn't sense her, that simply wasn't how they functioned, but the notion that she was safe meant that Valnyr didn't startle as Naeria approached. If anything, she turned around calmly and offered a warm smile to the young woman. Valnyr really should have done better to bond with the majority of her companions, she'd had plenty of opportunities on board their craft and even during the run up to the otherwise questionable events... But she had failed in that.
Perhaps now would provide a chance to make up for that? She didn't necessarily feel pressured to extend a hand of friendship, but she very much wanted to make up for her lack of interest in her companions. Yes, humans were intriguing and the earth was fascinating, but her people were just as important as well.
"Trying," she replied at last and shook her head just a little. "I'm not bad at it at a certain distance, but I've had a couple of encounters where being able to be further away would be useful," she admitted and sighed. "I hadn't quite worked out how to set up moving targets without bringing attention to myself, but that's another one I need to work on," she confessed.
"You're welcome to join me, if you'd like?" she offered. "Maybe you'll be able to see where I can improve."

Naeria lurked awkwardly at the edge of the makeshift shooting range after she'd spoken. Her shoulders were hunched, her eyes wide and unblinking, nervous. If Valnyr had told her to leave, or had so much as looked annoyed, she would have scampered off without saying anything more, but as it was, she was asking if she wanted to stay, and Naeria nodded, her shoulders relaxing away from her ears. "Andreyia's been helping me train," she said. "He was promoted. I don't know if you knew. He is very good with the weapons." She went quiet for another moment, although it was less from nerves this time, more just for thinking. "I could be your moving target, if you wanted," she offered. Naeria was very quiet. She wouldn't draw attention to them, like whatever contraption Valynr might have been thinking about building for practice. "I could shoot back. That would be more like a battle. I could look at your form too, yes." Stepping closer to where the cans were set up, Naeria drew her own blaster from the holster on her belt, but she did not do anything more until Valnyr had agreed to the plan.

There was a safety setting on the pistols, Valnyr just hadn't had it set to that level for quite some time. However Naeria's suggestion was a good one and to ignore the opportunity to use an actual moving target that couldn't necessarily be predicted would have been silly to turn down. Similarly, Valnyr could maybe help the other cadet improve, although it seemed like she might well have the upper hand on this one.
Suffice to say that Valnyr hadn't necessarily spent as much time with the others and had missed her chance to practice with them more than a few times. Her fault though, no one could be blamed, she'd just have to learn her lesson and make the extra effort.
"I had not, but I'll offer my congratulations if I see him," she added with a small smile as Naeria drew near.
"I think that you might be on to something though," she nodded ever so slightly towards the woman's pistol. "Creating something to simulate a battle is one thing but to have another to practice with would make it a lot more realistic," she agreed.
"Shall we give each other a minute or so to take our positions and then go from there?"

The Cadet blasters were made to be training tools. Even on the highest setting, they weren't particularly dangerous, but Naeria took a second to make sure that hers was set to a lower power setting. She also looked it over for any damage or grime, the way they'd been trained, but when she found none, she nodded. "Count to thirty," she said. "Then we start." One. Two. Three.Naeria sprinted off, today's layer of thin, slushy snow crunching under her boots as she moved. Four. Five. Six.There were trees here to keep them away from the prying eyes of humans. Naeria ducked behind one of them. She pressed her back flat against the rough bark. Seven. Eight. Nine. She brought her blaster up in front of her chest, rested her finger lightly on the trigger, and peeked out around the side of her cover. She waited.

She didn't have much time to be fair, but then again that would be realistic, wouldn't it? In the heat of a proper battle, having a small amount of time to do something was all that she'd get. She wouldn't have sixty seconds to prepare, sometimes she probably wouldn't have any. Honestly, after all she had seen all those weeks ago she knew better than to assume that there would ever be real time.
Nevertheless, Valnyr covered as much distance as she could physically do so, diving behind the cover of a bush just in time for the 'countdown' to end. Arguably, Naeria most likely had the better position and Valynr was fairly easy to see (or her shoes were) from behind the bush she had taken refuge by. Truth be told she hadn't picked the best direction to go but...well, she'd make the best of it.
Poised just behind her cover, she waited for an opportunity to take aim and fire. Maybe if Naeria popped her head just a little further out she'd be able to take a shot...Or any limb actually, she'd go with 'any' as a success for now given her current track record!

Twenty five. Twenty six. Twenty seven.Naeria took a deep breath and flexed her back against the tree that she'd chosen, but she didn't allow herself to peek at her fellow Vanguardian, not yet. Thirty. It was only at that point that she turned, slowly enough that she did not make too much noise to give away what she was doing. For one second more, she just faced the tree. Then, she leaned out from the cover, just for a moment. One eye and part of her face and hair was visible in that moment, but in the meantime, she was able to spot the pink of Valnyr's boot sole. Andreyia had told her not to hesitate, so she did not. Instead, she pulled her blaster around and fired at her foot. It might not be the most honorable, but it would likely be effective in a real battle.

It was a lesson that Valnyr would do well to learn. If one were to take cover it would be beneficial to take complete cover. Any exposed point of her body was a liability and she was soon punished for this as Naeria took a shot at her foot. The shot clipped exactly where it was supposed to and she felt the sudden 'tingle', it didn't hurt, but it was certainly uncomfortable as her foot became just a little heavier and she pulled it in.
Damn. One point to Naeria.
She couldn't let this distract her though, if she stalled at every moment that didn't go well for her she would lose and in a real world scenario that could be potentially fatal. No, instead the young woman understood what was needed and she carefully peeked out every now and then. She could be patient, she could wait, and then when she saw a hint of anything 'Naeria', she would take her aim and fire.
There was no guarantee she would hit anything of course, but as the woman had said, she had wanted to practice with moving targets and on this occasion she had to do this from a position of stealth and cover. That being said, if this didn't work then within the next few minutes she was going to make a break for it and try to launch an assault instead.
...She really should have read more into Sappers and their role in battle in terms of humanity, it might have given her more ideas.

Oh. Her attack had hit! That was good. Naeria had been doing occasional target practice of her own, and it was good to see that it was paying off when Valnyr's foot twitched and vanished. Within a split second, Naeria had vanished back behind her tree, making herself as small as her tall frame would allow. She cradled her blaster in both hands, silently counting down the seconds until the recharge had finished. Then, she peeked out again, ready for another shot. This time, Valnyr was faster. The shot hit the side of her cheek, sending odd, heavy tingles throughout the rest of her face. There was an awkward second where she couldn't quite blink, or move her mouth. She still shot, but this time it was a quick, blind thing before she was ducking back again.

If Valnyr had known that this particular shot had been similar to her own 'methods' i.e. a guess, then she probably would have found a little more comfort in it. They were both making shots in the dark and it was likely that a more senior member of the Vanguard might sigh in exasperation. There were things that could be done to improve ones skill level... but this probably wasn't the most constructive way to do it.
Still, it was a start, even if Valnyr had personally fallen behind in terms of her training and skill level. Had the circumstances been different she might very well have been in trouble, but for now she could at least be safe in the knowledge that self improvement was still regarded favourably.
Nevertheless when it came to luck Valnyr didn't typically have much of it and blind or not, the shot managed to find it's way to the top of her head. It was a distinctly unpleasant experience for reasons she couldn't quite put in to words. She would later discover that on earth some humans liked this sensation, the odd rippling tingle that shot from her head right down her spine as though her scalp had been tickled.
In a weird way it was painful to her, though she assumed this was because of the feeling rather than the weapon damaging her.
What an oddly effective thing.
She gave a shudder after a moment or two, eventually finding her composure, and carefully peeked from behind her bush. Naeria didn't seem to have moved yet, at least she hadn't heard any rustling which meant that she could at least try this charge, couldn't she?
Hm. In this environment she was safe, it made sense to try new strategies and analyse them afterwards.
With a firm nod the woman leapt from her hiding place and using the trees to provide her with as much cover as they could manage, she began to dart towards Naeria. She hadn't quite figured out what she'd do if she got their unnoticed (unlikely), but 'tackle' seemed to be a reasonable idea didn't it?

Everything was going fine. They had a system now. They were exchanging shots, learning how to reach targets in the split seconds that they would duck out from behind cover. It was target practice, in motion. At least, it was target practice until all at once it was not. Naeria was behind her tree again, waiting for her recharge, when she heard footsteps. Then, before she could think too much about that, she was being shoved to the ground. Her back hit the grass with a thump. Her blaster almost went flying, but she was holding it with both hands, and she curled her fingers tighter around it at the last second. Naeria looked up at Valnyr, her wide, owlish eyes full of shock. Then, they narrowed slightly. She squeezed the trigger of her blaster, sending a point blank blast towards the other while she tried to wiggle away from her.

It had worked - she had a brief instead go yip with excitement and then her celebration was very much over. Valnyr had managed to tackle Naeria to the ground, but in her moment of delight, Naeria had exploited the opening and shot her right in the stomach. On the one hand, at least she wasn't overwhelmed by the awkward and tingly sensaiton that had swept over her when her sparring partner had managed to hit her head previously.
...On the other hand.
There was something even more disturbing about the unintended queasiness that she felt when it hit her tummy though. She wasn't known to fall ill often, one might even say that earth's traditional foods tended to agree with her. Travel didn't make her ill, odd climates didn't unsettle her. Unfortunately, it seemed that being shot by a blaster did have an undesired effect though. Not that it hurt, but that tingling definitely wasn't something to be enjoyed.
It was a groan that she fell to one side and placed her hand on her stomach. She had no intention of bringing anything up in a celebration of the feeling, but it was certainly enough to get her to hold still.
"Oh my word I'd have sooner had you kick me," she strained and gave a quick shudder. "I wonder if this is how it would feel if I shot a human," she added.
Actually, would there even be one willing to test that theory to begin with? She was pretty sure she couldn't approach that topic without them regarding her with some degree of hostility...but if it did work like that it might have been useful. Alternatively it wouldn't work at all and it was only she who had the weakened stomach.
"I didn't even know it could do that."

Naeria blinked, twice, and while she might have been able to reposition and get another shot off while Valnyr flinched, instead she let her blaster vanish into subspace and raised her empty hands in front of her. "Sorry?" she murmured. She hadn't known it could give people stomachaches. She hadn't known that it felt worse than being kicked. Some of the others had been working on upgrading their weapons and making them more powerful. Naeria had thought that she should do that too, once she got approval, but suddenly she wasn't sure that she wanted to give it more raw power. People going through seconds of drawn out suffering every time she hit them was and uncomfortable thought, especially if she somehow made it more intense than this. The intent of the blasters was to stun people, and for a moment there, Naeria wondered if there was a kinder way to do that. "Do you want to take a break?" she said out loud. "I think we practiced all our skills. Aim. Use of cover. Strategy."

"It's fine," Valnyr breathed and shook her head. It would take her a little longer to regain her composure but she did at least sit up straight and offer a strained smile towards Naeria. Her fellow cadet hadn't done anything wrong, if anything, she'd done exactly had they had planned and the failing was entirely on Valnyr.
"Perhaps I just have a weaker stomach than I anticipated," she admitted and waved her hand. "Could be useful if someone else has the same vulnerability though," she added wryly. Their weapons were never meant to cause serious harm as cadets (and that was for good reason), but if they could debilitate even if that wasn't their original intention then it could be useful later.
...Valnyr didn't condone war, but self defence was important.
She was willing to adapt and make use of this if she could ascertain it would be as effective in others.
"I think you may have won though," Valnyr paused and glanced over her shoulder towards her previous hiding spot. "I think I need to be more mindful of my positioning in these scenarios," she conceded. "You definitely had the more effective cover."
