Quote:
Prompt 11 (Marshmallow Snow): Fresh-fallen snow coats Destiny City. It’s pristine and crisp, and it crunches as you walk through it. It may be a few inches deep, but it doesn’t seem to go above your calves when walking. At first, it’s easy enough to walk through, but gradually you realize that it’s getting harder to move. Every step you take feels like the snow is pulling you back in, and if you get a good look you might realize that sticky white fluff is clinging to you. The more you walk, the more it pulls, until you’re almost completely stuck. Something about the snow smells oddly sweet, and the tacky, marshmallow-like snow seems like it’s suddenly become a prison. The more you try to break free, the stickier it gets, and you’d better hope you don’t fall down. The more you struggle the harder it is to escape, but if you manage to stay still for a few minutes, the marshmallow will freeze and crystallize. When you move again, the snow will turn into a powdery dust and you can break free easily. The only good thing about this is that you won’t starve if you get trapped–the snow tastes just like marshmallows.

It appeared as if it had been snowing again last night, because when Briar had woken up enough to go and look out the window he had found that everything outside had been coated in a pristine carpet of soft-looking snow.

It was the sort of snow that almost begged for someone to go out and mess it up–

And back when he was younger, Briar would have happily offered himself up as the one to do so, but he kind of had other things on his mind given that the end of winter break swiftly approaching and with it his return back to Dublin.

It was hard to know just where all the time had gone, with it feeling almost like yesterday when he had first arrived back for the holidays - well at least right up to the point where he looked at the calendar and all of the days which had been crossed out in red–

A calendar which in its own way acted as a kind of countdown.

He'd still heard reports about the reindeer that had been brought in for Christmas and had subsequently escaped, although fortunately Briar hadn't run into any.

It hadn't stopped him from running into weirdness of his own though in the form of the creepy weird carollers who thought that stupid o'clock (aka some time around three am) was the perfect time to go out carolling and the strange package that had been addressed to him but had really been for some guy called 'Arthur' - but weird really wasn't uncommon in Destiny City - particularly around the holidays and on a scale of Destiny City weird Briar had experienced weirder–

Even if the creepy carol singing had been really creepy and the (temporary) communicating via Christmas carols thing had been embarrassing.

Not that Briar was going to admit to it - at least not out loud - although he could admit to himself that it had been embarrassing–

Embarrassing and (sadly) a very much a something that probably only happened in Destiny City.

At the very least things like that didn't seem to happen in Dublin - and if they did then they'd never happened anywhere where Briar would have been around to see it.

After raiding the cookie jar, Briar had found himself wandering down and in the direction of the library, as he absently munched his way through the cookies that he'd pilfered from the jar - and perhaps it was general distraction why it took a while to notice that he was no longer walking through the snow quite so easily, or that sticky white fluff had somehow started to stick to him - however eventually it had become pretty much impossible to ignore how the snow kept pulling him back in - namely down to the fact that it had become pretty much impossible to keep walking any further–

Oh Briar had tried, but it had only resulted in him becoming stickier and sticker as he became increasingly surrounded by snow that had a strangely sweet smelling smell, until he had given up and paused to try and come up with some sort of plan.

It hadn't really come to fruition because at some point the 'snow' or whatever the weirdly tacky and sweetly smelling stuff was had ended up crystallising and had ended up shattering when he had eventually tried to once again take another step forwards–

And whilst going away for college meant that Briar was no longer in Destiny City quite as much as he'd used to be, it seemed to that some things about the city had remained unchanged.

Destiny City was pretty weird - especially around the holidays.
