Quote:
Prompt 8 (Mouse in the House): It’s snowing outside, and it’s going to keep snowing--all night long. They're not calling it a blizzard but it sure does feel like one. The power seems like it’ll stay on, which is good because it’s so cold outside. You’re safe and warm--but you’re not alone. At first, you might not notice anything. Maybe you see something move out of the corner of your eye, or hear something in the other room. It doesn’t take long to find the culprit: a mouse.

A mouse is sharing your living space, your shelter from the storm. On one hand, you don’t know where it’s been. On the other hand, it’s freezing outside, and it has big, sweet eyes. Do you have the heart to kick anything out in this weather? ...Do you really want that thing running around your place unchecked?

The snow had started up some time late in the afternoon and from what she'd been hearing from the weather reports it seemed that the snow was slated to keep going until the morning - not that Saffron particularly minded–

Although that may have been down to the fact that she was on the right side of the snow.

Whilst there wasn't that much in the house due to the fact that she'd forgotten to do the groceries run before the snow started coming down and had absolutely zero intention of trying to brave the snow flurries in order to pick some up at this point, there was at least enough for her to manage as long as she included the cupboard in her scrounging and went with boring–

And with the way that the snow continued flurrying down Saffron was very much content to go with boring - at least for now.

Brown eyes took in the set of ingredients that she'd grouped on the counter, taking in the last remaining slices of the sourdough bread from the bakery around the corner, the tin of emergency soup, some teabags, a bag of pumpkin seeds that she'd picked up for a recipe that hadn't come to fruition and a small piece of cheese.

It wasn't much, but given the choice of it or braving outside then Saffron would take it - especially after further rummaging turned out a few biscuits in the biscuit tin that had somehow ended up being tucked away in the cupboard where she kept the mugs.

She'd been settled in front of the TV, with a mug tea in one hand and the heating on as she idly skimmed through TV channels when she'd heard it.

Squeaking.

Saffron frowned, brown eyes glancing back towards her small kitchen, and decided that she was imagining things.

There was no mouse. There couldn't be a mouse - after all how exactly was a mouse even going to get in?

She ignored the small voice in her head that pointed out that the talking cat that liked to hang out with her little cousin seemed to have no problem getting into her apartment and forcibly turned her attention back to the TV.

{{Squeak. Squeak}}

Saffron told herself to ignore it and flicked over to yet another channel.

{{Squeak. Squeak}}

Saffron told herself to ignore it and took a sip of cooling tea.

{{Squeak. Squeak}}

And it was like now that she had picked up on it that it was impossible to stop hearing the sound - a sound that most definitely was coming from the kitchen.

The kitchen - with the food that she spent all that time carefully scrounging up.

It was that last that had her setting her mug of tea and the remote down on the coffee table, because whilst Saffron was ninety-six percent sure that she was just imagining the squeaks - that still left four percent and she didn't want to chance the food on four percent–

And as it happened it was perhaps as well that she had given in and decided to go take a look - because there really was a mouse.

In the open bag of pumpkin seeds - well okay make that former pumpkin seeds as they were well and truly gone.

It was still there when she'd grabbed a pair of disposable gloves before scooping it up with every intention of dumping it out and not just because her apartment block had a no pets policy, but then Saffron had made the mistake of looking the mouse in its eyes–

It's large round eyes.

Eyes that seemed to be almost pleading with her.

She had the door half open and.. And...

{{Squeak. Squeak. Squeak}}

Saffron sighed defeated, because she couldn't do it - not today and with the weather the way it was.

Another sigh as she stared the mouse in the eye and tried (and failed) not to feel stupid "One night only and you have to take your chances with the outside in the morning."

A pause and then she added "And stay away from the rest of my food or I'll set you out tonight."

Would the mouse listen? Who knew - but one thing Saffron knew for sure was that she had just found herself very much owned by a mouse.
