Swirls was mad about something. By this point, Sylvite had figured out that her youma talked by repeating stuff, and tonight when she summoned her out of the rift, Swirls seemed to be repeating some kind of angry sounding feral growl-hiss, over and over again. Obviously Sylvite had stopped short and squatted down to be on Swirls' level. "What's wrong?" she asked. "Are the big guys down there being mean to you?" Swirls shook her head at that. She hissed one more time, showing her tiny teeth. "Wrong," she said, and started circling Sylvite. "Wrong, wrong, wrong." Then, she grabbed on to the bottom of Sylvite's cape skirt, and she tugged, and then she skittered down the street, glancing back every couple of seconds. Of course Sylvite followed her. They ended up all the way at the lake. At that point Swirls made a slightly less angry growl off towards the water, and Sylvite was pretty sure she heard something grumble back. There was definitely something out there. She could feel the youma aura. Then, Swirls looked back towards the city and hissed really loud. Looking pointedly towards Sylvite, she flipped her skirt up and piled the fabric on top of her head like a hat.

A Knightly aura became perceptible a second later, as did the wrong-ness. Out at the edge of the lake, a wet whap! echoed against the water, followed by a splash and a shriek. A similar jumble of noises slapped the slush-muddied banks again a few seconds later, and then another one. And more. Asphodel Knight was back here, on schedule, taking care of that pesky tentacled lamprey-youma again. Granted, there wouldn't be any people swimming out here at this time of year, but sometimes someone in need of some quality alone time would drift around the lake in a little fishing boat, no matter the weather. Therefore, it was best to keep up the pest control routine all year round. He'd since learned all the tricks it had up his sleeve, so he was whacking away at it with his shovel with a somewhat bored look on his face, as its toothy gelatinous tentacles wrapped around his face once again. As usual, it would be dust before it managed to eat him.

Usually Sylvite tried to be nice first. She was a talker. That was her whole thing. When the Knight showed up, though, and started whacking at the water youma, Swirls gave a pained, awful screech, and that was it. The knives were out. She was running forwards before she had a chance to even think, and Swirls was on her heels, still chanting " Wrong, wrong, wrong," under her breath while the wings on her head flickered from dull to bright, faster and faster. "Stop it!" Sylvite swung out with the dull side of her first knife as she yelled, just wanting the Knight to get away, but then she got a good look at his outfit. His Saturn outfit. The second knife swung towards him blade out. "You're hurting her friend!"

" What?" Asphodel leaned back quickly to dodge the sudden incursion of blades. The Negaverse agent before him got a good slice into his neck, though, thankfully away from the jugular. She looked pissed, though, and for what? Because one of Metallia's fingers was upset he was stubbing one of Metallia's toes? Please. He rolled his eyes as he continued to struggle against the tentacles, and now, his unexpected opponent. "Her friend keeps putting innocent people in danger out here," he said. "So, I don't care. If it wants to not get hurt, it can stay in the Rift." His spade was still sturdy in his grip, and he made another move to hit it.

"It was just chilling," Sylvite insisted. "Talking to Swirls. I was watching." The youma did not deserve to continue to get whacked with a giant shovel while she made her point, though, so with a wave of her hand, she sent it back off to the Rift. "You started it." She stopped stabbing, though, and she even stepped back. She looked a little bit guiltily at the blood dripping off her dagger. What he said reminded her of something Sedna had said a long time ago, before she was Stillwaterite. It reminded her what she'd offered to Sedna, that day. She hadn't been strong enough to follow up on it, back then, but she was strong enough now. "If you know of any other youma that are out of control, send me after them. I can send them away without having to hurt them or anything." Behind her, Swirls hissed softly. "Not her," Sylvite said. "She gets her walk, and I don't let her eat people."

"Oh," said Asphodel, as the lake-youma was cast harmlessly away to the vile dimension from whence it came. It sure was nice to never see that place again, he thought. When accused of starting the conflict, he shrugged noncommittally, still not caring much. Then he waved a hand dismissively at Slyvite's offer, saying, "Oh, no, no need to give me special treatment here. I remember the Youma Control Services branch of the Negaverse, I'll just use the regular hotline number you give civilians. What was it again?" He then crossed his arms, making a show out of pretending to think about it. "One... eight eight eight... something something... four...?" His eyes met the agent's with a slow, reptilian blink.

"Look," said Sylvite when he started rattling off fake numbers, "I'm not even supposed to be offering this. Youma are supposed to eat Knights like you." She crossed her arms, knives vanishing for the moment. "Just-" She paused, 'cause it was something she hadn't admitted in years, and she flashed an apologetic look back to Swirls before she said, "You have a point, okay? About the innocent people. So I'm offering." Her lips pressed together. Her fingernails started tapping faster and faster against her arms. The nerves that had been a problem since Ochre's death were probably showing through in her face. "So, like, do you want me to help, or do you want me to stab you again?"

Asphodel's eyebrows slowly raised (not that it was visible, with the hat), and his posture slackened a bit as he absorbed Sylvite's words. Part of him thought: another one? Already? Really? He knew, from personal experience, words like that were signs of someone three steps from the finish line. A crooked-toothed grin spread across his face as he thought, further: why not? It used to be so hard to even think of leaving the Negaverse, but nowadays, it seemed, the stench of Chaos had become harder to tolerate as the organization grew in power. He could barely go two weeks without meeting someone else who had either defected already, or was about to. Why not, indeed. Asphodel spoke. "What's on your mind, really?" he asked. "Sounds to me like you've been thinking the Negaverse is irresponsible about some things. Wrong about some things. Why else would you be telling me I have a point?" He leaned into his spade, and it sank a bit into the slush-covered mud. "Honestly, it would be in your best interest to stab me," he continued. "Then you'll have yourself a nice report on how you defended an innocent youma from a traitor." He stood up straight, and yanked his spade out of the mud, splattering bits of it on the two of them. "It'll keep you from looking too suspicious."

"Wait, really? You're a traitor?" Sylvite wasn't hard to get talking, and this guy had been really close to getting her to say stuff she shouldn't. If he hadn't dropped that last tidbit, she'd probably have ended up spilling her guts about Order and Chaos and Ochre and Thorite and all of the rest. At the admission of treason, though, she totally deflated. "You shouldn't have said that," she said, and her voice went higher-pitched, almost whiny. She was so tired of having to watch traitors die, and having to stab traitors herself, and having to constantly watch all of her underlings to make sure that none of them were traitors, too. "Now I have to kill you." She summoned the knives again, and swiped out. It was weak, though. Her heart wasn't in it.

The knives grazed at his sleeves, cutting through the fabric. " Ow," said Asphodel, melodramatically. No skin had actually been broken. "Yeah, that's real convincing," he said, dodging back out of the mud to more solid ground. "I'm really feeling your undying loyalty to Metallia here." His spade was ready in his hands for a counter-strike, but he didn't move. "Here's some things to write in that report while you're triumphantly standing over my dead body," he said, tauntingly. The stray wisp that was still following him around, after all these months, popped out from under his hat and floated nearby, looking for all the world like an extra eye staring down the agent. "The traitor you ran into, was quite insistent that you leave. They said it was not only possible, but could even be made easy. They mentioned having contacts and connections, including a Senshi Princess and a Royal Knight, who could help you escape to a safe location and remove the Chaos from your star seed without risk of the Queen or a General-Sovereign pulling you back to the Dark Kingdom and executing you. They seemed quite confident that you could find a place for yourself outside of the Negaverse... and even invited you to join a Brigade full of traitors they've been working on." The crooked grin flashed on his face, briefly, again. "I'm sure you'll get the praise you deserve for taking care of a problem like me, General." Asphodel was swaying casually with his spade in his hands, wide open for attack. He was all but daring her to follow through on her intent to kill him.

Sylvite stepped back again, although her breathing had gotten heavy. She looked him in the eye. He was talking. That was her excuse. He was saying important stuff, and it was her whole job to find out important stuff like this. For example, she knew about the Princess. She was very aware of the Princess who had snatched three of her friends now. Three! Plus, like, bunches of other people. She was very aware that people could be pretty hard to get ahold of once they turned traitor. She hadn't heard of a Royal Knight, though. She hadn't heard about any kind of Brigade. Like, a whole team of traitors? That was- Bad. Right. It was totally, obviously bad. It was bad, and he couldn't tell her more about it if he was dead. "I can't be a Knight, okay?" she told him. "I tried, a long time ago. Fought youma, looked for my magic item. Nothing. I couldn't join your little team if I wanted to. This was the only way I was gonna be someone, and-" She took a deep breath, looked him and his little orb thing right in the eye, and said, "And it's good that it worked out that way, 'cause it turns out that even with our issues, the Negaverse is way less messed up than you guys." " You guys," came a sassy little echo from behind her.

"You wanted to be someone, huh?" The corner of Asphodel's mouth twitched a bit, threatening a smirk and another barrage of witticisms -- but -- it paused. Dropped. He took a clearing breath, and his form wobbled a tiny bit. Something softened in his eyes. "That's exactly how the Negaverse caught me." His spade lowered to the ground again. "I was a kid, I wasn't even out of high school," he said. "I found out senshi exist, and I was angry they were running around with powers that were just handed to them. I remember being so pleased I was chosen to join an organization where I could earn power of my own." His voice was bitter and guilty, all at once. Many of his Negaverse memories were still half-formed, eaten away in bits and pieces by a yellowy static, but he remembered what he thought. He remembered how he felt. And his first memory, the moment he was corrupted by Charonite, was crystal clear. "I was powerful and important. I was making the world a better place. I was going to be one of the leaders of the new world we could create after the senshi were gone," he said. "I was somebody." He nodded, and another breath whistled through his nose. "Those were good times, as long as I kept believing all the excuses for everything I was doing. It was all worth it, so long as I could keep looking the other way." His eyes burned at her direction, pointedly. "Don't insult yourself by suggesting you're some kind of special hopeless case!" That came out sharply, like a knife thrown into the wall. "I'll petition the Code myself if I have to. If you want out, there's a way. I'll stake my life on it."

Maybe Swirls had registered the way that Sylvite was getting less and less tense as this knight went on about his own past, or the way her lips twitched when he talked about looking the other way. Maybe she noticed that Sylvite didn't have any sassy comebacks this time, at least not right away. Maybe she was just still really really annoyed about the whole lake youma situation and she'd been biding her time for the right moment. Either way, while Sylvite stood there blinking and trying to process, Swirls launched herself at Asphodel's face. Sylvite gave a little gasp. She reached out a hand, and before she knew what she was doing, before Swirl's tiny claws could get anywhere close to the Knight's eyeballs, she sent the youma back to the Rift, with her friend. The action snapped her out of whatever state she'd been in, though, listening to what this guy was saying. She stared at her hand for a second, stared at where Swirls had been, and then vanished herself, before he could get in her head any more.

Asphodel had his mouth open, ready to say even more, before Swirls leapt at his face -- and suddenly they were both gone. All that was left was him and his wisp, floating dimly in the darkness next to him. "Think I got to her?" he asked, not expecting an answer. He received none. The little ball of pale flame simply burned. stari_maga and fin for me! thank you! heart
