Quote:
Prompt 5 (Ice Bath): Rainfall is rare in Destiny City during Winter; there have been a few light showers between the occasional snow but it’s never been enough to be significant. In some places, it’s just enough for a thin layer of ice to cover the ground and make it a little slippery, but ultimately it’s not enough to worry about. In an inconspicuous place in town, you step into one of these icy puddles and the thin layer of ice shatters. The hole itself seems maybe three feet wide and if you’ve ever been in the area before you know it’s just a pothole a few inches deep at most. Except, when the ice shatters, you fall, plummeting into it as if it were a lake of icy water. It’s pitch black around you and only pale blue lights shimmer above you. The darkness is never ending and you can’t make out the details of anything except the shrinking hole above you. Maybe you remember how to swim and pull yourself out, maybe you black out and feel someone else pulling you out--either way, your frozen, soaking body is pulled from the puddle. The chill is immense, but if you look at the hole after being pulled out, all you can see is the ground below. There’s no sign that what you just experienced is real--except for the fact that you’re still soaking wet.

Sumner frowned at the sky as it rained down lightly. He didn't like it when Destiny City rained in the winter. He had already run into problems with it before, but usually it meant magical shenanigans that he didn't want to run into again. He had made sure to keep an eye on the ground and move around every puddle that he saw in an attempt to keep his feet off of them. Last time it had rained in Winter he had to rescue Pendour out of the not-a-puddle.

He was sure that something was going to happen again with these puddles and he wanted to make sure to avoid them again. Even if he was a Neptune Squire, he didn't have the ability to breath underwater or swim super quickly.

Onnie was... working, was perhaps the charitable way to put it, on being Onnie again. It was kinda like wearing a dress she hadn't worn for a few years (okay, it literally was that, plus superpowers); she'd spent over two years never being Onnie ever, not even touching her henshin pen, and that - plus the fact she'd barely had any time to enjoy not being a damn chibi before she'd moved away - was leaving her offbalance and awkward, gawky in a way she'd liked to think she'd grown out of by now.

It'd been rough enough, shooting up inches over the summer and going from nicely-formed to gawky and unbalanced and unused to the weight and shape of her body, a fast and painful growth spurt; just because she wasn't any taller now than she'd been then, not really, didn't mean that it didn't basically feel the same way. It was just getting used to 'newfound' strength, and how when she jumped while she was powered up it went way higher and longer; and with the winter everyone was out in force, so she couldn't just screw around and figure it out trial by fire, mostly because she'd cry if anyone saw her.

Advantages to being Onnie over being Clementine: the winter winds hurt less, even if she had huge bits of her legs and arms right out there for the chill to seep into. Other advantages: it was flexing a disused, withered muscle, but if she thought just right - reached out for that sixth-sense warmth - there. That flicker of soul-warmth, shiny in the way people like her were.

Better to be together than apart, right? Less chance of near-death experiences. It all made sense to her.

What made less sense to Onnie was when she skidded up to the guy, taking the corner a little recklessly and still sliding from a bit of ice on the ground, and right as she was opening her mouth - bam. She was plunging downward, the worst waterslide in the world, the little icy puddle beneath her shattering as soon as her heels touched it and she was falling she was - falling - drowning, falling, it was black black black barely any light --

Onnie was flailing, half-swimming half-panicking, bubbles streaming out of her mouth that she only knew existed by the feel of them when they hit her nose and cheeks; she was crying, maybe, but that might've been the shock. This was some kind of awful stupid joke the universe was playing on her and she didn't like it!! She could swim, but there was a difference between 'swimming' and 'getting out of here', and Lepus was --

Oh, god, Lepus, what was she gonna tell Lepus -- not that she'd be telling Lepus anything if she didn't come out of this stupid freaking hole she'd fallen into --

Kicking, gasping, acutely aware of how her lungs were burning with lack of breath and her body was burning with the chill, Onnie attempted to kick towards the surface once more. She had to get out.

His wonderings were quickly answered when he heard a splash, turned, and ran towards where he heard it from only catching the glimpse of someone "falling" into one of the puddles. If they were anything else he could have sworn that they were grabbing people on purpose. She moved to catch her and only barely caught her hand that appeared to be flailing just underneath the surface before he would have had to go in himself. He took a breath and plunged his head into the water to make sure that he could grab onto the rest of her arm before he pulled her out.

The water felt heavy and he was having to put all of his strength into his legs, but he managed to pull her out and move her away from that, and any other puddles, that could be fakes. He made sure to lay her out and check to make sure that she was still breathing. "Not again..." He muttered as he made sure that she didn't need to be resuscitated. He held her face. "Are you all right? Can you speak? Move your head?" He had to make sure she was responding.

Onnie coughed and spat up chilly water at him, shivering violently; she raised her head off the ground just enough to drag off her sodden scarf and drop it on the sidewalk next to her, not even bothering with thoughts like 'wringing it out' or 'moving'. She laid like that for a moment, eyes wide, before saying anything.

"I'm -- I'm -- I-I'm cold," she sobbed, already tearing up in frustration and fear, "b-but I'm -- don't - d-don't think I swallowed t-too much water or anything," and, god, the tears dripping down her cheeks were blazingly warm in comparison; this was so embarrassing, she'd literally just met this guy and she'd already totally embarrassed herself. Like normal. Classic Onnie.

"C-can -- I can move my head, I'm j-just -- I'm j-just cold," she said, and if her teeth were chattering she couldn't control that either.

Sumner cursed to himself. But he smiled at her. "At least you're talking, that's good." He said and with that he powered down as well. The jacket he had been wearing was warm and he immediately took it off and put it around her. "If you have the energy you should try powering down, your civilian clothes won't be wet like your uniform is." He hoped she had the energy to do it at least. "If not then I'll take you to my apartment, though it would be at least a minute." Luckily they weren't too far from where he lived, but he would have to do it while powered.

He was confident that he could get them there, it was just the risk of an Agent spotting their signatures and following them that was the problem. Still, if it meant that he could help a Senshi then he would do so.

"Y-yeah -- " Her teeth were chattering so hard it was almost distracting, but Onnie thought and focused as hard as she could, and after what felt like ages - but couldn't have been more than twenty or thirty seconds, really - her fuku shimmered away into petal-shaped bits of light and vanished. It left behind a teenage girl in a Hot Topic shirt, a windbreaker that looked like its design had come right off of a bowling alley floor, pajama pants, and fluffy, rounded-off boots.

Combined with his jacket, she was a little top-heavy, or at least there were more flattering looks. But she was warm, and not wet and cold anymore, and that was the most important thing.

"S-sorry for bugging you," Clem said, pathetically, and looked like she wanted to huddle into the jackets and die.

Duncan shook his head. "Don't be. The same thing happened last year to a friend of mine and the fact that it happened again this year makes it worrying. I'm hoping that this won't be a pattern now every winter. And besides, my job is a lifeguard, I have no problem helping people out of the water." He said with a nod. "We can wait here for a few minutes to see if you warm up. And I can help you home if need be."

"N-no!!" It was practically a squawk. "If my parents see some guy they don't even know w-walking me home, it'd be, like, super weird??" Clem sounded more indignant than anything, which, considering she'd theoretically almost just drowned, was an impressive turnaround rate. "...fine, I can wait here f-for a few minutes, though. I guess."

She sighed, then, a big sigh that heaved her shoulders up and down. "...I was i-in Maine last year this time. Maine's not weird about stuff."

He chuckled. "I understand." He thought if there was anything else she could do to warm up. "You might try checking if you can move your limbs. If you swing your arm around like this-" He said, using his right arm to demonstrate a partial circle. They weren't standing after all. "Or wiggle your toes. Just to get the blood moving around." He would have suggested holding her fingers just to warm them up, but while he didn't find anything improper about it, he was much too worried about saving people, he figured that she wouldn't want to do something like that, no matter how much it helped.

"Yes... I don't know what it is about Destiny City. I wish we could find out what the cause behind all of this weird stuff is. You would think that it's the Negaverse, but even they get caught up in it sometimes. I don't think they would want to attack their own Agents that much... But then again, I don't know how far they are willing to go either." It bothered him, but what could he do about it? Other than failing to find the source of it all. Best to just eventually stumble upon it he supposed.

"D-Destiny City's just weird." This Clem said with almost preposterous gravitas, more befitting a death sentence or a judicial ruling than her actual topic. Obediently, she swung one arm around, being exceedingly careful not to elbow him or strain anything, and then pursed her brows and wiggled her toes. At least she hadn't ruined these boots; they were super cute, and they were new, too.

"Who cares if it's the Negaverse? It's still weird and it sucks, it's not like knowing if it's Nega-stuff or not would actually make it any more fun." A little unsteady and still shivering a little, Clem slowly got to her feet, hands shoved in her jacket pockets. "I, uh, I think I'm... probably? Okay to go? Maybe?? I'm not gonna go power up again, I swear."

Duncan couldn't help but chuckle at her reaction. It seemed that she was well enough to start being annoyed with the situation and he couldn't blame her. "You are right. It is weird. And it's not fun at times." He thought about the recent situations he had had with the reservoir.

And the stupid squeaky beach. Why did he keep getting assigned there?!

He made sure to get up slowly and watch her to make sure she didn't fall down again. "I can walk with you for a bit. Not all the way if that would be too weird, but just to make sure that you're good to walk on your own. If not, I'll take my leave, but I doubt that's the last puddle like that." He said with a frown. "I wish we had met under better circumstance. Perhaps another time." He said, making sure that he could get home in his current state. Still, he hated having to watch where he was walking just to make sure he didn't fall into some cold water world. He would have to be careful on his way home.

If he'd been someone who had known Clem for longer, this would've all seemed relatively routine; she was prone to responding to any situation with overwrought dramatics, as the kind of person who felt loudly and often uncontrollably, and always got defensively embarrassed about it. A strange girl, all told.

"Okay," she admitted, reluctantly, "maybe for a little bit, but just a couple of blocks, okay??"

It stung to need the help from a total stranger, but at the same time... if she fell into another superhell pit of icy death on the way home and didn't have anyone there, it'd be incredibly embarrassing, not to mention absolutely godawful. So she was willing to make a few concessions.

Concessions like this were usually fine, at least. Or she'd manage.

She always managed.
