Davie's ankle was starting to feel like he could walk on it a little easier, with just slight pain. He was finally off the crutches, and needed to walk on it for real exercise. And he was aching for a hike in the woods... not just any hike either, he wanted to engage in his favorite activity - botanical photography.

His target today was the Black Pearl Amaryllis, and he had heard tell that one had bloomed in the grove near the ice covered river, in the southern part of the woods, not too far from him. DD, his foster mother agreed to let him go because it was Saturday, but there were definitely several conditons, for him to go and for him to go alone, namely, he had to be back in time for work at five, and he had to carry a cell phone with him, that had to be fully charged. He of course, agreed.
So he packed his equipment - the special photography cameras, that he worked so to save up of course, and their cases, some measuring tools, a compass and map (so he didn't get lost coming back - usually he didn't need them, but it was apart of the conditions, and just in case anyways), the phone, his walking stick and his heavy coat and other cold weather gear, and set off.
The journey was long and ardourus, longer than it should've have been, due to the pain in his ankle, for he kept having to stop, lean on his walking stick and rest. The snow made it even worse, making it difficult to gain traction - often his feet would go down through the snow, and then hit or snag something else - a root, a rock, etc. At these times, his ankle would really ring out in pain.
He trudged up hills, and down little valleys, through minor ravines, and still did not give up. Finally, he found the river - the ice-covered river. He followed that a ways, and then made his way over a narrow crevice, rooted together by the roots of a gigantic, gnarled tree, and there, on the other side, was the grove.
Slowly, as to not disturb and destroy the beauty of the grove he crept in and found a safe place to set down his pack. Then he searched for the flower, which he found behind a medium sized rock over in the corner - that would not do, as he would be able to get a proper picture of it. He then rolled away the rock, his ankle throbbing in the process, a drop of sweat dripping down his face. When did it get so hot? He wondered looking around at the snow.
He set up for the pictures, and did all kinds of pictures imaginable and even did pictures measuring the flowers. He had a feeling they would all turn out wonderful. He did not do digital though. Davie did not believe in digital, he believed that they were too easily corrupttable or damaged, and that would damage the honor of the flower.
Davie put the cameras and closed the cases. He put the negatives safely away, and packed everything away. He put his pack on, grabbed his walking stick, and stood, ready to walk home, when his ankle started to give way. He sat down quickly, saving his cameras. Taking a look at his ankle- no wonder he was exhausted, sweaty, hot and out of breath - he had overdone it, and his ankle had swollen to the size of a grapefruit. He wasn't going anywhere anytime soon. He called DD to let her know and she sent for help, but it would be awhile.
Later, he developed the pictures. They were excellent, so he sent them into Destiny City Newspaper to spread the news about awesome winter blooming flowers. They printed it and honored him with an article.
