The most convenient thing about Michael’s new house was how close it was to everything else in the city. It wasn’t exactly a suburb, but the area had once been the location of an old factory or something that had been torn down to make room for development a decade or so back.

It was relatively modest, especially compared to Chris and Paris’ house. And their parents, too. It was deceptively small looking on the outside, but inside there was plenty of room for… whatever Michael planned on doing with it.

Peter was just grateful that he’d been allowed one of the rooms to live in.

The walk itself had been mostly silent, although Peter made sure to pause every now and then to make sure Devyn knew things like crossing the street at crosswalks, and how streetlights worked, and to always look both ways before crossing, even at a crosswalk.

Michael was not home by the time they’d arrived, but Peter half expected him to not talk to him for the next week. That was fine. It would be worth it, helping Devyn out. Hopefully.

“So, this is my brother’s house. I’m living with him for now,” Peter explained as he pushed open the front door once he’d unlocked it. “There’s a bathroom over there if you need it,” he gestured to one of the doors. “Uh, you’re welcome to anything in the kitchen. There might be some leftover lasagna if Michael didn’t eat it all already. We can talk now, or if you want to, you can shower and I can get you some new clothes to wear. I mean, they’re my brother’s, but he won’t mind.” Yes he would. “Or if you want to just talk now then that’s fine too. Oh, trashcan is behind that door,” he pointed, since Devyn seemed to be done with his coffee.

For the most part, Devyn had walked in silence. Sometimes he would nod when Peter explained something, or ask a question about something he saw and didn’t recognize or understand. Sometimes his stomach would do the talking.

Mostly, he was quiet, and had taken to eating as they walked. He seemed to have an insatiable appetite; the amount in the bag was more than any human should have been able to comfortably eat, but he finished off the bag without any hesitation, and looked like he could have had even more without being uncomfortable.

He didn’t know what he expected of the house when he entered it, but what he saw didn’t fit the picture he’d built in his head. He crumpled up the bag and disposed of it and his empty coffee cup, but without the garbage he had to pick his next task. There didn’t seem to be a wrong answer, and he had the advantage of being in what felt like cleaner clothes than his Senshi outfit.

Kitchen sounded good. Shower sounded good. Clean clothes sounded good. Answers sounded good.

Answers should probably take priority over everything else. Then a shower, to think about them. Then he could come back with more questions.

He was still looking around the place when he asked, “How many Senshi are here, and how many Knights? What are you all doing here? I’ve never heard of a Senshi being born on any world other than their own. And the Negaverse–what are they? And if there’s so many Senshi here, why haven’t they been stopped yet?”

Peter had the feeling that Devyn would be interested in getting answers first, which was fine. He took a moment to glance down at his suspiciously silent phone and grimaced. He knew Michael was going to be angry, but he really couldn’t just leave Devyn out there in the elements, especially after telling him he needed to power down.

“Hundreds. I’m not sure, but this is a big city. I’ll have to check later, but a million or two or more people live here. But even though that might seem like a lot, this is all we have left. The Negaverse has already taken over the rest of the world. It’s not safe to power up anywhere else because you’d get immediately killed or corrupted. They… from what I understand… are controlled by Chaos. Or. I guess they call it Metallia,” he explained, thinking back to what Paris had talked about, especially when Chris had almost been corrupted. Back when she awoke as a Princess.

“They’ve got a Queen Laurelite who is in charge of them. Under Metallia, of course. Then they’ve got General Sovereigns who are no joke. Other than all the agents and corrupted Senshi they’ve got, they also have youma which used to be human, but were distorted by Chaos until there’s nothing left but monstrous creatures. They’re not all horrible. I’ve studied them a lot over the years. They can be saved. All of them. If they’re willing. Uh, you can stop me anytime you need a break but.”

And then he paused again, because he knew what his brother would say. But he knew this was Sailor Alastor, so it was only fair…

“My Senshi name is Oberon. We’re born here because… there isn’t any known place in the cosmos that can comfortably sustain life. Some have awakened recently, I think. Like, life came out of hibernation or magically appeared, I don’t know. But no one can be born on their own worlds because no one else lives there. If someone is going to be born-- or reborn, it has to be on Earth.”

Devyn crossed his arms over his chest while he listened, and tapped his fingers thoughtfully on his upper arm while he watched Peter. The first part was easier to take in than the last part, so it felt like a bit of a wild ride the whole time.

Hundreds of Senshi, and someone else had taken over this entire world?

Killed, he understood. Corrupted, Metallia, Laurelite, General Sovereigns, Youma–those things were foreign to him.

Chaos, he knew, and he bristled a bit at that. His lips pressed into a firm line and he couldn’t stop his jaw from clenching.

If Peter’s words were true, it made sense why he would be concerned with someone having an energy signature–especially if the Negaverse was looking to pick them off. Devyn didn’t feel like he got lucky often, but if he had been lucky and avoided the Negaverse up until now, good for him. Unless Peter was exaggerating, but Devyn really didn’t see what he’d be getting out of that lie.

“I’ve never met an Oberon. Never even heard of it, sorry. My world was–”

Not dying, no. That was too dramatic. It just wasn’t doing well.

“–sick. The people have had to go into hiding, I haven’t seen any in a while. But it’s for the best, they’re safer that way. I don’t know if we ever had a city with a million people gathered, but we were nothing to scoff at. It’s not safe to have so many in one place, now. There’s a Chaos on my world. I can’t find it, it’s rooted somewhere I can’t reach. And it’s spread so far. I don’t know if I can do it, myself. And not like this.”

He looked down, like he expected to be in his Senshi uniform, but blinked when he remembered he’d powered down. The fog was back a bit, but it always happened when he was thinking about the past. “I couldn’t do it when I was an Eternal Senshi, and as I am now I’m only further disadvantaged. I need a better plan. That’s why I’m here, looking for Percy. He helped me fix my world before. The flooding’s worse now than ever, so I need him to help me figure out how to redirect things. But the water’s gotten worse since the Chaos spread so far. At least rocks aren’t falling out of the sky again. Maybe because the clouds are too thick. I lost contact with everyone.”

A while ago, at some vague point in time that was both very recently and very far away, according to his mental logs. “What happened everywhere else?”

“It’s a moon of Uranus,” Peter said with a light shrug of his shoulders. “Planet past Jupiter and Saturn. But when I visited it, it was just ruins. I mean, there were a lot of plants, but nothing else was living there.”

He paused for a moment, still trying to process everything Devyn was saying. He didn’t want to jump to conclusions, but things weren’t adding up. Maybe he was still missing some information, himself.

“There’s people that still live there? That’s good. I really thought Earth was the only place. Until the Velencians showed up. But they have a synthetic world, because their homeworld isn’t doing too great. They can’t awaken their Senshi, and they hope in doing so will bring it back,” he explained, and took a few steps around Devyn to open the refrigerator. He pulled out some chicken salad, since he’d seen how Devyn devoured the food he’d brought with him, and pushed the whole bowl towards him.

“It’s just chicken. Mayo. Celery. I don’t know what else is in it. Michael made it. It’s pretty good,” he explained and fished out a fork from one of the drawers to pass to Devyn. “There’s other food too, but…” Peter glanced at Devyn’s stomach, as if that was enough of an explanation.

“If I can help you find Percy, then--”

The front door opened then, and Peter winced because that meant Michael was home.

“Uh, hold that thought. I’m going to see if I can make sure he’s not angry. Um. There’s drinks in the fridge too. You can help yourself!” he said as he quickly made his way back out of the kitchen to where his brother would be.

He should have known that Peter would want to take a complete stranger to his house. Michael had tried so hard to keep his, and therefore his family’s, identities safe and yet Peter didn’t seem to realize how dangerous it was to just bring a random Senshi home. What if they were a spy? Allied with the Negaverse?

“I don’t want to talk right now,” he grumbled, but without any fire. He was just. Tired. He knew the Senshi was in the kitchen. He’d heard Peter talking to him. He was glad that he was at least no longer powered up, but it was still incredibly dangerous.

”I know, I know. I’m sorry. I really am! But he’s different. Like really different. He’s not from Earth. Like the Velencians. He has no idea what is going on. We can’t just leave him out there. He’ll get hit by a car or mugged or caught by the Negaverse--”

In civilized environments, eavesdropping was considered rude. Except, Devyn couldn’t help that he was very sensitive to sounds, and maybe he couldn’t help that he’d been trying to hear what was being said. He wasn't sure if he was just trying to gather as much information as he could, or if he was preparing for a trap, or if he was just curious.

He rubbed his hand over his chest while he listened, uncertain if the ache was from an oncoming storm or–something else. He felt strangely anxious, like his skin had been spread too tightly over his bones. He’d lost mass, he wasn’t as strong as he used to be. Outside of his Senshi uniform he was a little more aware of how his clothes seemed to hang off of him, like he’d dressed maybe just a size too big. It probably wasn’t that noticeable to anyone but himself; he knew the fabric was supposed to be a little tighter.

He didn’t know anything about Velencians, or synthetic worlds. The chicken salad was good, although he was hardly chewing. A large bite, a large swallow. He didn’t want to miss anything being said over the sound of eating. He didn’t explore the fridge, didn’t touch anything. Didn’t even try to sit down. He stood in the middle of the kitchen, trying to make out what he could of their conversation without being too obvious about it.

…It didn’t sound like some well-concocted trap, at least.

And the chicken salad was really good.

Michael frowned as he tried to understand what Peter was saying. Not from Earth? How was a Senshi not from Earth? How did he get there? How did his world manage to escape whatever destroyed Sessrumnir? Valhalla, Ganymede, Oberon…? And so many others.

Oh, but Peter was already answering the questions he was thinking to himself. The Senshi's world was sick. And he was there to… find a solution? Get help?

"He knows you're Oberon?" Michael asked as he tuned back in to what Peter was telling him. Sometimes the words were there, but they washed over him so he didn't really hear them, but he heard enough to decipher what was important.

He only waited until Peter nodded before dropping his coat onto the back of the couch and turning to make his way into the kitchen to find their otherworldly guest eating his lunch. Whatever. That wasn't important.

"You're not from Earth? What are you doing here? How many are on your world? What do you need to go home?" he asked without really looking at the man. Instead he focused on his clothes, on any clues that might help him determine if he was lying or if he was just crazy--

Michael froze when his eyes lifted to finally look at the man's face.

There was something... giving him horrible indigestion or heartburn or- something else. His chest was tight and uncomfortable and it clearly had something to do with this strange man in his kitchen.

"Sorry!" Peter quickly followed Michael back into the kitchen. Other than their eyes, they definitely looked like brothers, just about fifteen years apart. Peter was just a smidge taller than Michael too, who was tall enough as it was, but he'd obviously not bothered with working out as Michael had, as he was much more lithe.

"Devyn, this is Michael. He's really skeptical about everything. And we were just, uh, tricked by the Velencians. We were trying to help them help us by attacking the Negaverse, but it turned out one of their leaders was in league with the Negaverse all along. It was a horrible battle. But, uh," he paused, looking from Michael to Devyn hoping that maybe Michael could be nice and stop making horrible faces.

Devyn was mid-bite when Michael entered, and for a second he forgot how to speak. His skin felt stretched again, like Michael even just looking at him put him in more of a spotlight than he’d anticipated. He couldn’t say that he was uncomfortable but he wasn’t sure how to describe it.

Peter’s apology was entirely unnecessary and he nodded, even though he didn’t take his eyes off of Michael. If anyone was going to be a threat, it seemed more likely that it would be him.

Especially with those faces.

“Not from Earth,” he finally answered, and set the mostly-finished chicken salad down on the counter. He brushed his hands over his pants, which were obviously of fine quality even if they looked like they might have seen better days. There wasn’t much wrong with them, they just had a look of age. Well-kept, but old.

He didn’t blame anyone for skepticism; he had plenty of his own.

“There was a light in the sky, it had some energy. I thought it was someone calling for me. It’s the first sign of life anywhere else I’ve seen in a while. I assumed it was someone calling for me. I expected someone would be here to receive me, but I haven’t found them yet. I’d like to go home as quickly as possible. I don’t want to leave it vulnerable to the Chaos there. I can’t give you a number, I don’t know how many are in hiding. But I know they’re out there. I’m looking for whoever called me, but I expect it’s Percy. He’s a Knight of Jupiter, but I don’t know why he wouldn’t be there. But, he’s got family here on Earth, so maybe they can point me in his direction.”

There was a brief moment when Michael thought he felt the steady pulse from the necklace he wore fluctuate. He knew he was likely imagining it. It had similar imaginary fluctuations recently, but it could have very well just mean Michael momentarily had a lapse in recognizing what was happening around him. Almost like a blip in his own personal timeline. It wasn't unfamiliar, but the necklace at least proved that those blips existed and weren't just in his head-- or rather, they were caused by something in his head and he had a way to gage when they happened.

That would make more sense than the consistent pulse suddenly changing for a beat and then going back to normal.

And then Devyn answered. Michael listened.

Devyn was not from Earth. He wanted to protect his world from the Chaos but wasn't sure how many survivors his world had because they were in hiding. He thought he'd been called there by a Knight of Jupiter named Percy.

He could hear Peter already answering with confusion in his voice.

"I don't know any Percy, but I do know--"

"Excuse us for a moment," Michael said as he held his hand out to stop Peter from potentially causing more problems for them than necessary.

He took Peter by the arm and pulled him back out of the kitchen before he could say anything else.

"I wasn't going to say who," Peter groaned and pulled his arm away from Michael once they were in the living room with a wall and open doorway separating them from Devyn. "You're being more high strung than usual. I don't think anything he's said has been a lie. He really just wants to find Percy and help his world. Is that so bad?"

Peter thought Michael was being weird. More so than usual. He was usually harsh with new people, but he was just being mean to Devyn.

"And if he knows a Jupiter Knight, he might be able to help with--"

"Can you please lower your voice," Michael requested, trying to keep his own voice low while trying to work everything out in his head. Percy wasn't an unusual name. But another Jupiter Knight? Michael knew they probably just needed to ask Devyn what they were the Knight of for confirmation, but something inside him already knew.

"Something doesn't seem right about this. There's something we're missing. Senshi don't just show up at random from other Worlds. The light in the sky… he might be talking about Archideus. I don't know. It seems too much of a coincidence. But you saw the celestial map on the Moon, too. Or maybe he's not the only one who is going to show up on Earth looking for answers. But what were they-- or at least, what was he doing all this time…?"

Michael paused and shook his head again. He was jumping to conclusions. He was answering things that were convenient, but it was entirely likely that Percy was a very popular name for Jupiter Knights.

Waiting wasn’t really Devyn’s strong suit. He’d been patient for so long already that he felt tense being left in the kitchen again–which was probably silly, he had the salad to keep him company. Only for two more bites; the container was empty shortly after, and he very quickly ran out of a reason to stay in the kitchen.

He’d been asked to excuse them, and that was fine, but he couldn’t help but try to listen again.

There was far less he could make out this time, and the distant whispers just put him on edge. Secrets weren’t innately bad but he didn’t know where he was, not really. Nor who he was with. He didn’t know what they wanted, where their alliances were, or what they could do.

They didn’t seem malicious, but Devyn wanted to get moving.

Some distant thought was scratching at the back of his mind, clawing. He couldn’t place it but it felt off. Something he should know but he didn’t, something that was right there.

Something he didn’t reach for.

In the absence of his host–hosts?–Devyn could only try to piece together what he knew and what he assumed.

They didn’t know Percy but they knew–what, a Jupiter Knight? He could work with that, maybe he just needed to head over there and ask someone for information.

He crossed his arms over his chest and waited for a few seconds more before he shifted his weight and thought very hard about just following them out there to interrupt their secret meeting. He didn’t want to be rude, but he did want to know what was going on.

…He was unannounced. They were in something of a war. He was foreign to them, and they’d already gotten involved in some other unpleasant mischief not so long ago.

He paced around the kitchen because he understood. He just wanted answers now, not whatever watered down version they were going to give him while they conspired in another room. Maybe not maliciously! Peter seemed nice enough. Devyn didn’t care for any dangerous secrets, he just wanted to know what he could and be on his way if he was causing them any trouble.

The longer he stood still, the more his body reminded him that it was tired, but the more he paced around the kitchen the more energy he was wasting to get nowhere.

Finally, he caved and just called, “If you don’t know Percy, I’ll be glad to have whatever you do know. I don’t know what I have to bargain with, but if you tell me what you’re after I’m sure we can make an arrangement. If I can’t find anything here on Earth, then I need to get to Jupiter. Is the weather still bad up there?”

His chest was hurting just to think about it, he didn’t want to actually deal with all that storming. Unless it was necessary.

“I’d like to get as close to Sessrumnir as possible but if I have to walk across the planet, I will.”

Peter's eyes widened as he stared at Michael-- who had already closed his eyes very tightly and clenched his jaw so hard that Peter wondered if he was hurting himself by doing it.

There were only a few reasons as to why Devyn would be looking for a Knight of Jupiter-- or any Jupiter knight. And want to get to Sessrumnir. But he clearly didn't know how much of the Wonder had been left in ruins, or that no one was there. Or that Michael had been Sessrumnir for at least ten years.

"How…? Why--"

"Because Percy Martel is the Sessrumnir, Knight of Jupiter that he's looking for."

He didn't bother keeping his voice down this time. It was obvious that Devyn was getting restless and wanting answers. Michael wanted answers too, but there were too many things going on. They had to focus on the Void. They'd already missed their opportunity to use it when the Velencians tricked them into being attacked by the Negaverse. They couldn't afford to drag their feet on this any longer.

"Isn't he?" Michael asked, taking a few steps back to the kitchen doorway and leaned against the frame. He watched Devyn's reaction, but knew that he'd been pretty receptive to finding out any information about Percy that he would probably listen now if it meant learning anything he could.

"Michael," Peter hissed, staying where he was out of sight, and hopefully out of earshot. "If that's--... This might have something to do with time travel. If he's from the past, we could really screw up the present if we're not careful," he warned, keeping his voice as low as possible, but he was obviously concerned. And Michael should know that as well.

"Unless-- multiverse theory… but we shouldn't risk that."

"The storms are pretty bad on Jupiter. And you have to understand that our identities are important to us. It keeps us safe. There are a few others I want to talk to before I can give you any more information about Percy," he explained, because if they didn't at least give Devyn something, he might run off and cause all kinds of trouble, looking for a person that had died over a thousand years ago.

Peter was still cringing at him, but Michael grit his teeth. The fastest way to get Devyn to go home was to give him the information that he needed, but in order to do that, they first needed to verify who he was.

"Can you take a picture of Devyn and send it to Paris?" he asked, turning to Peter first, and then looking at Devyn. "If that's okay with you. I just want to confirm something."

Devyn’s attention was immediately on Michael when he entered the room and he seemed satisfied to have any information on the matter. Waiting for information wasn’t exactly easy but knowing that there was a plan made it easier.

“Whatever you need,” he invited. If pictures meant something different here, fine. He was willing to agree to just about anything if it meant moving forward a little quicker. “Just let me know. Your world is a bit different from mine but I hope you won’t take offense if I say I would rather be on my way sooner rather than later. I don’t like the idea of leaving my world unprotected and I’ve already been here for a few days.”

He couldn’t blame them for being cautious, now with what he already knew about things that had happened here. While he was partly reluctant to confirm Percy’s identity given how important they had said it was to protect it, he was sure enough that they already knew.

Although, even just hearing that name made his heart skip a bit, and it really wasn’t that hard to read Devyn. He wasn’t really hiding his cards, and he had been open enough about who he was looking for and where he wanted to be.

It was enough to get him to stop pacing, at least; he looked a bit expectant, as if waiting for some instruction to speed up the process of moving forward.

Peter wasn't sure what Michael's plan was, but Michael usually knew what he was doing more than himself or Chris, so he typically trusted his judgment. Even though he was sure they were breaking some kind of temporal law that may or may not exist.

He pulled out his phone from his pocket so he could peek around the corner of the entrance to the kitchen so he could snap a quick image of Devyn.

"What do you want me to say to Paris?" he asked, because if anyone would be able to confirm the possibility of time travelers, it would be Paris.

Michael felt the weird sensation with his necklace again. The steady pulse seemed to skip for a moment, but this time Michael was fairly certain that he hadn't had any blip in memory. He resisted the urge to reach up and touch it from where it rested beneath his shirt.

He nodded in understanding to Devyn. Michael wanted to get him what he needed as quickly as possible, too. The sooner they figured out the time travel stuff -- if that was what it was -- the better.

In the meantime, it would be important to keep an eye on Devyn and make sure he didn't break a timeline by mistake.

"Tell Paris that his name is Devyn and he's looking for Percy, or any Knight of Jupiter. You can tell her I'm with you both now."

If anything, it would be important to give Paris a heads up. Chris might not want to be involved in any of this, since Michael knew how uncomfortable it made him to know his past life was Serge Martel.

"In a few days, there's going to be a get together for Christmas. It's a holiday many people celebrate on Earth," he explained to Devyn. "There might be some people there who can give you more information. Would you like to go?" He already knew his mother would invite all of the Velencians if she could, so why not one more alien? And one that was potentially unknowingly time traveling to the future.

He paused to glance at the empty container of the chicken salad and added, "There's going to be a lot of food. In the meantime, you're welcome to stay here. And I'm sure Peter already offered my clothes."

Peter coughed guiltily in response.

Devyn would have agreed even if he hadn’t been bribed with food. His stomach was threatening to growl again—or maybe he had eaten too much, too quickly, and was about to throw up?

No, he was probably fine. Maybe it was just indigestion? Or just his stomach churning in anticipation. It could have been any number of things, or any combination of a number of things. He was going to have to wait for a few days to get answers. But, in a few days he might have a lot of answers.

And food.

He felt like he could have eaten more, and rested a hand over his stomach—which felt very full—and had to tell his body to calm down. He was pretty sure the hunger was in his mind, not his body.

“I’d appreciate that, please. I’m grateful for your hospitality. And lucky that I ran into you. I probably have a change of clothes in subspace, I can grab those instead. Though, they might need a wash, too.”

He didn’t want to inconvenience them, especially when they had such promise for actually being able to help him. He’d been here for a few days already, he could do a few days more. Probably. In any case, his world wasn’t sending him any messages that things had gotten worse, and he was pretty sure he’d have been able to feel if something I had gone wrong.

Devyn wasn’t thinking about it when he reached up to rub at his chest, and he seemed immediately unnerved by the fact that his wedding ring was not on the chain around his neck, and he felt a very powerful urge to power up right then and there to retrieve it. But—no. He was a guest here, and they’d already expressed that it was important to keep their identity a secret. He bit the inside of his cheek and had to force his hand back down to his side.

“I’m unfamiliar with Earth customs. I may need some guidance. I’ll try to stay out of your hair, but I need to go out later. Is there some time, some place, where it’s safer to power up?”

He tried not to look too anxious about it, but. It felt like his arm had just fallen off. He could distract himself with a shower and clean clothes if he had to, but that wasn’t going to last forever. He really wasn’t going to make it for too long if he didn’t have that ring, and if he couldn’t see it, couldn’t hold it, how could he be sure he hadn’t lost it?

If Michael noticed anything off about Devyn’s reaction, such as how he quickly lowered his hand, or looked like he was suddenly more restless than he’d been before, he didn’t say anything about it. Instead he glanced over to Peter to see if he’d sent his message and waited for a response. Maybe to give Devyn some time to collect himself if necessary.

“We can go out later. We’ll show you the best places you can power up, and when. Try to stay away from where anyone you know lives, just in case you’re being followed. Usually a block or two should be fine, unless you think someone is watching you. Never power up or down in front of people you don’t trust with your life-- it might be the last thing you do. Same goes for revealing your identity,” Michael said, trying to think of what else might be useful for someone who didn’t know anything about the Negaverse or Earth.

“I’m guessing you don’t have a phone from a Mauvian. We should try to find one of those while we’re out. Or you can go with Peter if you’d rather,” Michael shrugged. Peter was just as capable as he was. And he wasn’t the one with the complicated… identity.

“Paris says ‘um, what’,” Peter announced with a shrug. It either meant she recognized Devyn or she had no idea. Either way it wasn’t going to be useful at the moment. Not until they figured out what to do about time traveling Senshi.

He shook his head and looked up at Devyn as well, offering him a somewhat awkward smile. “We’ll go out later this evening when it starts getting dark. Oh… I guess you have different ways of telling time where you’re from. Uh. Well, it gets darker earlier in the evening during the winter months, so maybe seven or so hours? But we can figure out stuff to do until then. I can get a room ready for you if you’d like to rest. I mean, it’s mostly ready, but it’s also an office. You okay? You look a little sick.”
