Dawn tied on her new apron with pride. It was a new day - no more probation- and her first day of her job at Laurie's foral shop. She would actually get paid for her work now. Extra cash - that was cool. Floral Arrangement Classes, that was sweet, however, what she cared about most, was that either she earned DD's (Laurie's) trust - or at DD was giving her another good chance. Whatever it was, she was not going to break DD's trust, or waste this chance.
She had gotten to work fifteen minutes early (not too early, and definitely not too late - either could be detrimenal to her job). She changed quickly, quietly, and without making a mess in either the bathroom or the break. She paused a moment when putting on the nametag to look at her name with pride - "Hi my name is Kakure Mae Jaimeson, but I go by Dawn. Have a wonderful, flowery day," But only for a moment. Quickly, she washed her hands and clocked in.
The shop had not opened yet for the afternoon, so she got to work wiping every thing and watering plants to prepare to open the shop. When DD (Laurie) came, albeit a little bit, to head off the shipping guy, the store was ready to go, between her, Davie and Kane. "Wow, you guys are really rocking today. Good job." DD (Laurie) said as she opened the shop.
The first few days of work, DD was still not allowing Dawn to work with customers. That was okay. Dawn, knew she had to earn back DD's trust, and the Justice System's too.. especially the Community. You don't just break a girl's nose - and five minutes later everyone loves you again. Sure, she had done probation, she was going to St. Mags. She had been within Authority Figure's vision for 14 days, and had been seeing a psycologist regularly and learning coping skills like floral arrangement, and had graduated anger management class, among other things.
Things just did not work that way. And yes, the girl had said some some hurtful things that had seemed to connect to Dawn's painful past. That didn't give Dawn the excuse to break her nose. And as much she hated to admit it, but just because she had a terrible, painful past didn't give her an excuse to go around breaking people's noses just because they said something hurtful about it. Sure it was painful - but a lot of people had painful pasts, and if all of them went around breaking people's noses, because the person said something hurtful about their pasts, no one would be able to breathe through their noses.. so she needed help to heal this wound. Looked like she really did need the psychologist after all.
She spoke of this to Dr. Dolores Mode, her psychologist, a few hours after work that night, who about fell out of her chair in shock. Dr. Mode was used her sullen, stubborn, I don't need to talk to anybody, side. So suddenly, I need to grow up..
Shaken and straighting her glasses, Dr. Mode nodded and asked her, "So when did this all come up?" Dawn thought about it. "The last few days. My probation at the shop finished and DD -er- Laurie was willing to give a paid job. Today was my first day... the fact that she is willing to give me a chance and trust me. Of course, I'm not allowed to work with the custromers yet, or perhaps ever, but that's my fault. I lost that trust, the day I broke Selva's nose. That trust, I may never be able to earn back, but it doesn't I won't stopping to earn it back, the right way. Although," she commented as an afterthought, "I think I will try to stay away from people like Selva."
Dr. Mode inhaled and adjusted her glasses. "You could be proud of yourself, in the last few days, you have really made a lot of progress and grown. You still have a lot of room to grow and it will probably take a while to completely heal from what happened when you were little, but like you said it doesn't give you an excuse. I see you are thinking hard, what is it?"
"I wonder if Selva may have made that comment because she is hurting too? I don't what her life or past is or was like. Perhaps something has happened to her or is happening to her, and like me she lashed out. Then, I can not blame for her actions."
Dr. Mode raised her eyebrows."What a very mature thought. She may be very well hurting. Unfortunately, we cannot know for a fact what others are going through, unless they tell us. And we can only be responsible for our own actions." She looked over at the clock. "And sadly our time is up for the evening. I hope we will discuss this more next time, Dawn. Unfortunately, it will be our last visit. Don't worry," Dolores said comfortingly, seeing that Dawn was upset. "I am getting you started with my friend, another counselor over at your school, she is very good. You may know her, Sister Rosemary. Good luck, Dawn." Dr. Mode smiled at her. That was the first time she had ever smiled at Dawn.
