Prompt 4 (Fear and Feathers): The moon is bright tonight and reflects off of the snowy ground, illuminating everything with an ethereal glow. Destiny City feels almost safe, even at night. The fresh fallen snow seems undisturbed and brings a sense of peace. Only, nothing is ever as good as it seems, and there’s something eerie about it. After a while, it feels like someone--or something--is watching you. In the shadows of the trees, a set of milky eyes watches. Whatever it is, it’s tall and bulky. If you walk quickly, you feel it follow you but once you leave the line of trees, it disappears. If you try to approach it, a great beast will screech at you: a six foot tall snowy white owl takes flight. It may tackle or claw at you, depending on how you approach it, but it will always take flight and disappear in the night. If you choose to attack it, for the next few nights any time you look out your window you will see glowing eyes in the distance--or worse, hear it scratching to get in. Eventually, the temperature rises and the visits stop. For now.

Note: The owl is not a youma but can be used as a battle requirement for a character. It can only be used as a battle if there are two powered characters involved; you cannot write a solo and count this as a battle, and your character must be powered to count this for a battle. If you repeat the prompt with the same character, only one will count for a battle requirement. The owl will not appear to have any magical abilities and seems to simply be a very large, aggressive owl.

Beira should have known that something was wrong when Destiny City felt safe. Of course something would have been amiss. He’d traveled through the forest to try and cut through the city and get home a little quicker, but apparently in doing so he’d earned the ire of a bird.

He hadn’t even known it was there. Sure, he felt the eyes on him, and the hair had stood up on the back of his neck, but it hadn’t felt dangerous.

Beira heard the branches snap and the feathers ruffle just before he heard the shrill squeal of the owl as it descended upon him. It had no energy signature and yet it still seemed to target him. The forest was too dense to get any blow in, and the idea of using his magic registered only briefly, but he really didn’t want to freeze himself into becoming easy pickings. How the owl was able to navigate through this was a mystery to him, but it claws up his arm and pecked at his hair hard enough to pull some out so he did the only logical thing–he ran.

There was an order energy signature just ahead of him, though he wasn’t really thinking of that–he just wanted to get to the clearing and know that he could run without tripping over a root or rock.

The Senshi was wearing white, and against the fresh fallen snow he almost hadn’t even seen her. He broke through the clearing and, a bit out of breath already he encouraged, “Run,” because–what else was he supposed to do? Stop and fight this thing that was taller than him, and seemed more like a normal animal than a youma or monster?

It broke through the treeline less than three seconds after him, and it flew feet first as if it meant to try and grab him–only, it missed, and sloppily flew into both Senshi with enough force to knock someone over if they weren’t already well-grounded. It tumbled into them in a mess of feathers and rage and screeched loudly as it flapped its wings and tried to right itself.

An overwhelming amount of dread fell upon her already weary shoulders the moment Alcor sensed the approaching aura. It’s not as if she knew what was coming, she just assumed that it was Eleonora excited that she’d finally found her; probably with the help of Liryn with his mauvian technology. Granted, with hindsight being 20-20, Alcor should have known that not even an electric blanket in front of an outdoor fireplace would get the Senshi of Heat to move that quickly.

Arms crossed in front of her, she turned towards the signature, and over the span of the next few moments a calamity of mishaps ensued.

Run, he had yelled, but her mind had barely enough time to process the panic in his voice as a large owl-like bird burst through the tree line behind him in an explosion of snow that fell from the pine tree limbs.

Alcor tried to get her feet to move, to turn the opposite way and book it the hell out of the clearing but her boots were firmly rooted in the ankle-high deep snow and without much else in the way of warning, a mass of feathers, wings, and wild limbs slammed into her.

Feet over head, the Senshi of Cold somersaulted backward, one boot coming off- or rather it just stayed stuck in the show and her foot came out. Either way, one leg was significantly colder than the other while she scrambled to untangle herself from the oversized coat that had gotten flipped up and over her head so she couldn’t see a damned thing.

Beira wasn’t one for profanity, but as he toppled into the snow from the collision, he really wanted to swear. He tried to push himself up quickly but the cold had already sunk into his bones. Was there really any reason not to cast his magic when he was already frozen?

“Sorry,” he said to the Senshi, but he didn’t know if it was enough. The owl looked like it had tumbled into the snow and was rapidly righting itself, flapping its wings and trying to get back in the air. “Are you okay?”

It wasn’t like it was a good time to communicate, but if she was hurt he couldn’t just go back to running. If she was doing okay, maybe they could just try to distract it and take off in different directions. The city wasn’t so far away but he didn’t want to risk unleashing this thing on anyone less prepared.

…His magic was unreliable, but in a pinch, that was all he had.

Under his breath he muttered, “Lonely Chill,” and hoped that his magic agreed with him. He focused as much as he could on the owl hoped[i]attacking[/i/] them.

Quote:
Sailor Scout Attack: Lonely Chill
Sailor Beira gestures to a target within his line of sight and a chilly wind surges towards them. The wind does no damage, but the chill clings to them, seeps into them, and grips at their heart, leaving them suddenly feeling alone and unwanted. They may feel rejected, abandoned, and like they don't fit in; however the player wants to interpret it, they may, but a deep sense of loneliness will plague them for 30 seconds, after which the sensation will fade along with the coolness that accompanied it unless the player chooses to have the sensation persist for longer. This magic can be used three times

“What did you do to make it so angry?” She cried out, trying to get the long hair out of her face, the snow out of her coat, and find her missing shoe.

The owl seemed to stagger, which was a good sign since she had no idea what his magic had done to it. But it at least put a little bit of distance between them. Nonetheless, Alcor grumbled under her breath, pressed together a snowball and spoke her attack. “Touch of Cold”

Her hands began to glow blue causing the already cold snow to become that much colder and rather than exploding in an ineffective puff of soft powder this one, she knew, would hold together. Fortunately, the owl was noticeably larger than the last lieutenant she had thrown an icy snowball at making it easier to hit.

Sailor Scout Attack: Touch of Cold
After calling out her attack, Sailor Alcor hands get very cold and take on a bluish tint which lasts for 15 seconds. In order for this attack to be effective Sailor Alcor must make physical contact with the opponentor object. Once contact is made the area begins to get cold at a rapid rate and frostbite will spread no more than 5" from where her hand is so long as she can maintain contact for 5 seconds. Effect wise against an oponent the person will have trouble moving rendering the affected area useless and will experience a significant amount of pain/ discomfort. Otherwise, if she is holding onto an object it might make it more brittle or more firm. The frostbite duration lasts for 20 seconds after contact is broken for the person to 'thaw' time may take longer depending on weather. This attack can be summoned 3 times.

“Nothing, I was just trying to take a shortcut through the trees and it flew down. I don’t know what happened.”

…She wasn’t freezing, though. He wasn’t. She didn’t seem like she was being swallowed up with loneliness, and neither was he.

So far as he could tell, maybe his magic…worked?

Maybe?

It didn’t have an energy signature though, and Beira was admittedly not so well-versed in wildlife. Though, he was pretty sure owls weren’t supposed to get that big. And, if they did, they must have been some sort of anomaly, and that probably meant they weren’t supposed to try and maim it.

The owl had almost been upon them when it seemed distracted by the light of a lamp, and it made a disgruntled, angry noise. While it was distracted, Alcor’s snowball hit it and it reeled back with another shriek, stumbling from the impact and sudden cold. It toppled into a pile of snow and writhed as if it thought it could shake the cold off.

Beira had only been able to make out the brief second when it seemed to be offended by the light, so while the owl was tossing about in the snow as it tried to warm up, or get up, or something, he looked to Alcor.

“We have to get into the city, I don’t think it likes the lights. We might buy a few seconds if we separate, can you make it on your own?”

Can she make it on her own? Well, when push came to shove like it was now then yes she could run back to the city on her own. But with only one shoe it was likely that she would end up with frostbite or worse. Unlike her own magic, this kind of frostbite didn’t wear off in a few moments, this was the kind of frost that caused people to become amputees.

But the owl- It was right next to her other shoe and if the objective here was to go away then running towards it would just go against the goal.

Alcor made a sound that borderlined an annoyed snarl-like grunt, rolled her eyes, and briefly, very very briefly, powered down. For less than a moment, she wore her skating exercise gear, leggings with a thin jacket and henshin pen in hand. The next- well… she was back to as she was after going through the whole saying her name while frost wrapped around her and the oversized white coat hugged her comfortably with both her boots on!

“Ah-” It worked, warm feet!

Unfortunately, there wasn’t much time to revel in her success as it appeared the owl was quickly recovering. “Meet you back at Destiny City. At the ice rink,” she quickly added. “If you can find it.” It was kind of a dying hobby for some people, fewer visited over the years, same with most sports but the building itself had been there for more than a few decades. So… hopefully, even if he had never been there perhaps he’d heard of it and knew where it was at?

Maybe he should have been surprised to see her power down and then back up so quickly, but he realized very quickly that she must have had a good reason. Two shoes was a very good reason.

“Yeah,” he agreed, as simply as that. He knew where the skating rink was, he passed by it often. He hadn’t gone himself in years, but there was a part of him that wanted to go back. He just let work keep him busy. He didn’t give him much time to relax these days–and why should he, when he was agitating giant birds?

Any chance he had of relaxing was out the window now, he wasn’t sure he was going to be able to go home and take it easy.

…Assuming he got home. “See you there,” he said, and while a part of him felt bad about running off…

They had a plan. He wasn’t going to do anyone any favors by sticking around until that thing gathered its wits and started attacking again.

He raised one hand, a quick wave goodbye, and took off towards the city lights.
