Dawn was suspended again! Her foster Laurie sighed again as she picked her from St. Mags. Dawn just stared out the window as they drove back to the floral shop that Laurie owned to pick something up. Laurie glanced at her as she drove. "What was it this time? Someone insult Davie again?" Dawn muttered something. "What did you say? Unwanted Trash.. Oh Dawn." Laurie sighed. Laurie knew that Dawn had psychological issues with feeling unwanted - most foster kids did. However, she and her twin, Davie's issues were extremely strong - they'd been abandoned, at the age of two in a park playground - just when they were starting to be remember certain things. Laurie did feel bad for Dawn, what the girl had said was hurtful and low - cruel even. But that said, Dawn couldn't go around breaking people's noses.. in fact, Dawn was lucky, the girl's parents hadn't pressed charges. Dawn was ordered to see a psychologist.

Laurie stopped at her shop; she had to bring in a shipment of flowers- particular Jasmines, and unfortuately, another stipulation of Dawn's sentence was that she was not allowed out of the sight of an authority figure for fourteen days. "Come on." Laurie called. "I need your help." Dawn frowned. "I don't work here." She said confused. "Remember your probation? You do now." Laurie handed her a clipboard. Dawn nodded without a word.

Thus began Dawn's Thirty Days of Probation. On Day Three, Laurie noticed at her glancing at the Jasmines that had come in. On Day Nine, Dawn sniffed them as she walked by, a hint of relaxation and a smile on her face. On Day Sixteen, Laurie thought she caught Dawn taking a little extra time to arrange the Jasmines as she stocked them.

On Day Twenty-Five, Dawn nearly went back to court, in a bad way. She had been stocking shelves, when a testy old woman, known for her surly moods came in. This woman didn't realize that since Dawn was on probation (especially for physical violence), she was not allowed to wait on customers and grumpily demanded service. Dawn tried to explain this gently and that she'd get the woman some help, which only worsened the situation. The woman decided Dawn was being lazy and started screaming, yelling and insulting her, including calling her "Worthless Unwanted Trash".

Before Dawn could react, Laurie, who'd been in her office working on paperwork and watching the whole thing on videocam, appeared, and firmly instructed Dawn "to go the back and ... um.. arrange the Jasmines," while she helped the woman. When Laurie finally came to the back to see how Dawn was doing, she found Dawn calmly arranging the Jasmine in a floral aggrangement, that may not have won trophies , but had good potential.

For the next five days, any time Dawn had a break, or was frustrated, she took a break and went to the back to work on these arrangements - especially with Jasmine. Laurie never said a word.

At the end of the day on Day Thirty, Dawn finished cleaning, and put everything away. She helped Laurie close the shop. Then she turned and exhaled, saying, "I guess that's it, my probation is over, right?" Laurie smiled. "Yes, it is. See you back in the shop, on Monday?" Dawn was confused, "Huh?" Laurie responded, smiling. "Let's see, your brother, Davie makes $7.25 an hour and 10 hours a week. I think that's fair. And if you work Saturday evenings for 3 hours, I can get you into Floral Arrangement Classes if you like. " For the first time in a long time, Dawn smiled, and then took and shook Laurie's proferred hand.
