      • After Rogue had mouthed off to the Death Scythe again, he'd been given a remedial task to help out the commoners in the underbelly of Death City. Soup kitchen work, distributing goods, and first aid were the tasks at hand for remedial DWMA students. Of course, Chance had been there when Rogue'd told off the Death Scythe, and his "incessant apologies" and "unending chatter" had irritated the Death Scythe into giving him the same remedial punishment for their weekend.

"Wow," Chance had said as the duo walked down to the slums, "Ah didn' know yew commoners - er, regular folk - lived in such small houses!" His loud, obnoxious cheer echoed the filthy alleys as they made their way to the base of operations for DWMA students doing mandatory charity work. He wasn't sure which area they'd help out in because he didn't know if Rogue had a preference, but he was excited to help them out anyways. "It's so charmin'!" He beamed at Rogue. "Y'all'd've made a feast outta sum rice 'n' beans, ah reckon, if y'all can dew so well in such small abodes. Tha' one ove' there is like thuh size uh my bedroom back home."

He laced his fingers behind the back of his head as they walked, in high spirits as always despite the detention. It seemed very little could bring Chance down besides his own self-doubt. He had shown up for detention like he showed up every other day at the DWMA, with his high-quality cowboy costume and boots that were more expensive than the salary of some professors at the academy. The disparity between himself and the commoners was an amusing observation that warranted no further introspection from the cheerful wannabe hero.

โ‡จโ˜พโ‡จRogue rubbed the bridge of his nose and closed his eyes at Chance's dialogue. "Keep your voice down." He spoke while sighing in his hand. As they walked through the slums together, Chance found ways to be even more innocently snobbish. Still, he was far more frustrated with the DWMA than with Chance. "Ah hate that school." He balled his fists up tightly in his hands. "They send delinquents to my neighborhood as a punishment. Then act like they're doin' folks 'round here a favor. Ah guess anythin' that ain't gentrified is a charity case to them." Rogue walked into the soup kitchen with Chance and handed him gloves, a hairnet, and an apron. Chance would have to remove his expensive hat and cover his nice tunic with far less fashionable attire. "How much help are we really doin' anyway? If the DWMA actually invested in this community then they'd have nowhere else to send kids for detention. They're just keepin' folks down at this rate." Rogue complained as he settled into his station beside Chance. He scooped the chicken soup into the bowls with a ladle and recognized many of the people who were coming in. "Hey Ronan! I didn't know you were in the DWMA!" One of his old neighbors piped up and seemed genuinely glad to see him. "Yuh, that's why ya ain't seen me 'round much. I'll be back for Christmas!" The older man nodded as Rogue served the soup. Chance would probably be startled by the man using Rogue's birth name, Ronan Cormac. "That's great! You take care now." Rogue gave the man a weary smile and a "you too" nod. He figured that his old friend was probably too hungry to be bothered by a long conversation, plus there were many more people in line. A drunk man walked up to the counter where Chance would serve him food. The amount of people coming in was overwhelming. "Hey there Richie Rich. Get me sum ********' soup and maybe some money while you're at it!" Rogue glared at him and his stupid slurred words at Chance. He supposed Chance would have to get used to seeing assholes in the slums.

      • Chance put on the hair net and apron, looking to Rogue as he tied the apron on. "Free soup mus' help, eh?" He didn't know what Rogue was complaining about. These people were getting free soup, but Chance's family never had a soup kitchen to help them out. In fact, his family paid taxes so that the local soup kitchen could assist their employees. "Why's thuh DWMA gotta inves' in uh community? The community should invest in themselves, ya know? Learn sum stocks 'n' all dat. Ah don' see how thuh academy is keepin' these folks down. They gotta lift themselves up by thuh bootstraps," he mused. His questions were genuine, not laced with any malice or anything, but his brow furrowed as he thought about what Rogue was saying. It really didn't make sense.

He perked up as someone referred to Rogue kindly, surprised that he was learning so much about Rogue: not only did he live here, but these people knew him as Ronan. Chance intended to ask about it, but a rude man came up to him demanding soup and money. "Ah reckon yew don' know dat honey attracts more flies 'an vinegar." He looked down the length of his nose at the man as he finished serving him soup. "Ah think yew might 'ave better luck beggin' by the shoppin' district." Chance responded to the man with some distaste, though he wasn't outright aggressive because neither he nor Rogue were threatened. As Chance saw it, the two of them were underappreciated heroes fighting the good fight, even if people didn't appreciate it.

โ‡จโ˜พโ‡จRogue could feel himself tensing up with every word out of Chance's mouth. "Do ya know how much of an expense the DWMA is for the city? The least they could do is help in community development to pay the taxpayer back." He was uncomfortably tense as he explained how the DWMA was feeding into the inequity of Death City. "Most people don't have enough disposable income to invest a meaningful amount of money. My parents were too busy choosin' between food or diapers for me to invest their meager earnings from their tight-fisted bosses." Rogue spoke with bitterness as he remembered what happened to his parents. His shoulders only got tighter as he watched the interaction between Chance and the drunk man. He glared at Chance briefly for his response before looking at the man across the counter. "Git a move on or there's gonna be trouble." He tilted his head to show him the way to his seat before the man snarled. "You're right, wouldn't want him rolling around in the dirt with a peasant like me." He scoffed before taking the bowl and walking away.

โ‡จโ˜พโ‡จRogue seethed as he felt his blood boiling along with the soup pots. He focused on serving the rest of the people in line, thankfully without incident so far. Once the line began to die down, Rogue would take Chance aside. He was annoyed because it was obvious that the sheltered boy had much to learn and Rogue was unsure if he had enough patience but he would still try. "Yew need to watch your attitude 'round here. Almost everyone we've seen works full time but they still can't afford to buy enough food. Do you think that's right?" Rogue could feel his temper escalating as he asked Chance the question.

      • Chance committed to his work, but he was distracted to Rogue's words. "Yer parents should of asked fer uh raise. Yew deserved a nice upbringin'," Chance said, choosing Rogue's parents to be the antagonists here. He was glad Rogue told off the needy man, but the cowboy couldn't help but notice there was less bite than he'd have expected. The man got a biting word in edgewise before leaving, and Chance shook his head irritably. "Yeah, that's right," he murmured. He was too good to be rolling in the dirt with that man; he dedicated his time to the DWMA to make the world a safer place. Without him and Rogue, that man would likely have descended into Madness.

"They need t' git better jobs," he said to Rogue earnestly. "They can work hard where they'll get a better wage. Then, they can live up higher in the city instead of down here in dirt." His Southern twang had died a bit as he spoke, picking up a hint of a French accent before he shook his head clear. He untied his apron as the two of them stood aside of the soup kitchen. "Ah don' understand why yer defendin' them so hard. They could do better if they tried."

โ‡จโ˜พโ‡จRogue was holding back but was now outright upset. "Don't say that! They did the best they could. They didn't have a union, do you think they could've asked for a raise without gettin' fired and replaced?! Those jobs just treated my parents like they were nothin'." He felt his anger rising as he remembered how young they died, purely from the circumstances of their poverty. Rogue continued to feel insulted as Chance continued his classist diatribe. "I'm from here, what you call dirt. I guess that means I'm dirt to you too." He stuffed his balled fists deep into his pockets as he continued being defensive. "Unlike you, these people aren't a "they" to me. I'd still be stuck here if I didn't go to the DWMA. And I'm only in the academy because I'm riskin' life and limb to be a Meister. I've gotta risk my life every day or go back to poverty. Those were my choices." Rogue seethed as he walked back to the academy and away from the soup kitchen with Chance. "Who would choose to be poor? Most folks ain't born with the same resources as yew. And the rich still hate us for that." Rogue stayed heated as he continued walking and stomping out his rage. "The rich get their money and value off the backs of workers. Without workers, then there's no investing. Everyone should have to create their own necessities to live and own the resources in common. Communities can work together and help each other. No rich people and no government taking advantage of the people who make society possible." It was a paradise really. Everyone could be free and work together to make the world a better place. But no, people obsessed with their own greed and power had to prevent it from happening and Rogue planned to change that.

      • Chance couldn't believe Rogue was making so many excuses for his parents when Rogue didn't make any excuses for himself. "Yew ain't like them!" Chance argued petulantly. He would never insult or belittle Rogue. "Yew work t' do better e'ryday. Yew are a hero!" He frowned as Rogue explained his work as a Meister was to avoid poverty. That couldn't possibly be true. Rogue definitely chose to work at the DWMA to end evil. He wanted to be good. He wanted to help people. It was selflessness; it was heroic.

He felt like his world was falling apart in front of him. How could his hero treat Meister-ing like a job instead of a calling? "My... my parents work hard," Chance argued, voice wavering as his eyes grew wet and his fists clenched. "They do! I never saw them growing up because they were working so hard. So hard so they could put me through private school and summer camp and international internships. They did that for me to have a good life and they work hard! I'm not going to listen to you {tell me it was all for nothing!}" His hysterics dissolved into French at the end before he ran down the alley past Rogue, wiping at his eyes and despising the weight of everyone's gaze on him as he fled. He was so stupid. He didn't want to fight with Rogue, but he couldn't think about his parents being lazy.

He sat by the polluted river, wrapping his arms around his knees and hiding his face in them. The day had started so wonderfully, but now it was all falling apart. He felt like he didn't know anything about the world.

โ‡จโ˜พโ‡จThis conversation was quickly exhausting him. "You need to give folks more credit." He admonished as he watched Chance slink away from him. When he went on about his parents Rogue rubbed his temples. "I'm sure they do and they're more than compensated for it. My parents were poor, worked hard, got sick, and died, the end. The powerful could've made it so that doesn't happen, but they won't 'cause it hurts their bottom line, it's disgraceful." He scratched the back of his head as Chance cut him off with a sudden change in accent. "Why's your voice keep doin' that?" He felt like his hair was on fire as he listened to this rant. When Chance said that he would not accept that it was all for nothing Rogue just sighed. "At least they're still alive,,." The Meister became sentimental as he remembered them. He could not understand why Chance was so materialistic about his memories. Rogue had no toys but his parents made it a loving home for him regardless to the point where it did not matter. "To make a difference, I need to stop the people who are so greedy that they make the world worse. Like earlier, who's holding Lord Death and the Death Scythes accountable? Nobody. So might makes right for them. Same with that witch queen and that Kishin egg businessman we stopped earlier." Rogue was determined to stop the rich and the powerful from controlling the world anymore. "People need freedom. I ain't out to control nobody. AIn't nobody fightin' for the people down here because they can't give them somethin' in return. It's bullshit!" Rogue, like Change, was frustrated at the world right now. He knew that there must be people out in the world like him but he had yet to meet them and it was becoming disheartening. Rogue would not give up.

โ‡จโ˜พโ‡จRogue huffed as he looked at the polluted river filled with waste from the factories. "Open yer eyes, Chance! Even that water in front of yew is being dumped into by Lewincorp!" He jabbed his finger upward at the massive industrial processing plant dozens of feet away from them. Before Rogue could get into another rant, he shut his mouth as he watched what happened next. There were a group of workers, hundreds of them, walking out of the factory. It was unusual and seemed to obviously be a strike. Then he suddenly felt the disturbance of the Lewincorp factory manager beginning to exude Kishin egg energy. "Wait...I think those workers might be in danger. I can't quite make it out, but I think there might be a Kishin egg over yonder." Rogue took a road over the river and ran with Chance toward the factory. As the workers assembled after their staged walkout, the factory foreman and other managers stepped out of the building. He was licking his lips in a hungering fashion as Rogue tried to blend into the crowd. "Get back to work! We already warned all of you that your bonuses were forfeited this year because of budget cuts! You've known this for months!" The foreman shouted at the group who began instantly shouting back for fair wages. "This don't look good. That man looks like a killer to me. What do you think?" Rogue was calmer as he spoke to Chance from the sidelines and analyzed the man. How he wished that he had soul perception abilities to learn more.

      • Chance shook his head at the river as Rogue kept trying to tie in more things. It didn't make any sense to him. Lord Death helped people; he wasn't oppressing them. They held themselves accountable - the students and the world held them accountable by choosing to listen to them! It wasn't blind trust: it was earned. Rogue was dismissive of his parents so far, so Chance didn't want to explain his French heritage. That he thought all heroes were cowboys who talked like Rogue, so he had learned quickly how to emulate them. He thought he was being accurate. He didn't know anything.

He barely looked up to see what Rogue was talking about, but he didn't care about the pollution. "Ah can' transform," Chance spoke into his shirt. His emotions were running high and he was crushed. If he wasn't in control of himself, he only ever transformed with sneezes or out of surprise. "And aren' yew off thuh clock? No need t' save these people; bein' a Meister is jus' work." he pouted. He didn't sense kishin energy, but he wasn't super intuitive like Rogue was. "Yer better off withou' a spoiled kid like me."

โ‡จโ˜พโ‡จRogue looked over at Chance and just shook his head as he spoke. "Stop that. You're the one who started all this by spittin' on poor folks." He reminded Chance with a classic "you started it" line. Nonetheless, Chance not being able to transform into his weapon form was certainly not ideal. He continued watching the shouting match between the Kishin egg and the protesting workers. The stakes were increasing and Rogue was feeling the tension rise between him and his partner as a result. "Are you not transformin' because you're bein' petty?" He asked with an accusatory tone.

      • "Ah ain't spit o' nobody," Chance said softly. He wiped at his eyes. Very quietly, he asked, "Yew think I'm petty?" He really struggled to transform when emotional, but particularly, it made it hard to control his trigger. It was like shooting accidentally when sneezing; high emotions made it difficult for him to maintain focus or control. And he could get over the two of them disagreeing, but Rogue was so ready to believe the worst of Chance and Chance's parents. He refused to believe he never saw his parents for nothing. It was all challenging everything he knew and he couldn't handle it on top of being told he was spoiled and terrible. "Yew care 'bout freedom, right? Why don' yew go feel free t' do somethin' 'bout it withou' the worthless rich kid?"

โ‡จโ˜พโ‡จRogue rolled his eyes at Chance and felt no desire to mend the bridge after he felt that Chance was making him lose his temper. "Fine! Go back to mommy and daddy and their money for all I care!" Rogue was complaining about the system of wealth inequality and Chance was the one making it personal. As if the rich had it so bad that their efforts needed to be recognized for personal industriousness. After he finished shouting at Rogue, the foreman immediately chimed in. "You're all being unreasonable and forcing my hand...security!" The group could easily be replaced by new hires in the area. There were plenty of unemployed that could do this menial labor in the manager's mind. The wealthy factory owner watched as guards from the factory began performing brutal crowd dispursement. Mace was being sprayed into the group as Rogue looked at Chance and just gave him a look of "I give up on you" before running toward the factory owner. He began to transform into a red-skinned goblin form similar to the greedy businessman that Chance and him had stopped earlier. One worker got loose from the crowd and lunged at the director while his comrades were being beaten. The factory owner thrust a knife into his heart before consuming his human soul. Did no one else just see that?! The factory foreman committed murder out of "self defense" before his very eyes.

โ‡จโ˜พโ‡จRogue knew that he had to put a stop to this but he had no idea how to do so. He released red smoke at him and allowed an illusory image of himself to take the hit of another thrust of the man's knife. Rogue ran toward him and punched him in the face in a brutal attempt at retaliation against the murdering capitalist. Rogue would not see the group of five security guards who were running up behind him to club him with batons.

      • Chance huffed at Rogue's flippant response. He'd turned against everything his parents had taught him and had lied about where he was in order to help Rogue in the academy and pursue heroism. It hurt him deeply to hear that Rogue didn't care about him at all. He stayed back and buried his head in his arms, though he couldn't ignore the sounds of the skirmish for long.

He finally lifted his head to catch Rogue pulling more illusory shenanigans. It was true, Chance hadn't seen Rogue do much combat beyond illusions, shooting him, or punching. He didn't seem to have the aggressive wavelength training that Chance had witnessed other Meisters use. Perhaps Rogue was out of his depths... it was obvious he was being overpowered. Security began to gang up on Rogue. "ROGUE, TURN 'ROUND!" He cried out, but he hadn't given warning in time to prevent the first security guard's baton strike on Rogue.

His blood was boiling. He was moving before he realized it, adrenaline spiking as he foresaw Rogue getting beaten bloody by all the security guards the foreman had at hand. There was no class divide or financial debate that could stop Chance from seeing that Rogue needed help; the simplicity of it allowed Chance's mind to clear in favor of pure instinct. He transformed as he approached Rogue, shooting at two of the guards in the back. He flung himself into the air and to Rogue's hand as best as he could. He landed another shot at the ground, ricocheting into a third guard's face and knocking him clean to the ground.

โ‡จโ˜พโ‡จAGH!" Rogue shouted as he felt the blunt pain bruising his back. He heard Chance's shouts before turning around and seeing the group of security guards rushing to attack him. He held his hand out as Chance's pistol form landed in his hand. He pointed the revolver at the remaining guards and finished them off with another few shots as they swung at him and he dodged. "Look at yew, savin' me again." Rogue smiled at the gun before his serious look quickly returned. He watched as more guards attacked the crowd with increasingly excessive brutality. "They're doing the same thing to everybody else!" These workers were not even fighting anybody. One security guard started beating a woman within an inch of her life before Rogue fired a round at the guard and dropping him. Rogue extended his hand and filled the area with red smoke. The smoke would not effect the workers but shrouded the workers in illusion making them harder to detect for the guards. When the security guards stopped attacking them with their superior weapons, the workers pushed back. "I'm not letting you ruin this!" Rogue turned around when the Kishin egg shouted and ran toward him again with the knife. "Just let 'em have the better wages and turn yourself in!" Rogue yelled with hate at the murderous, greedy man. Rogue would extend his arm to let Chance make the choice to give the finishing shot.

      • Everything felt better once Rogue was holding him. The two of them downed many of the assailants, but then Rogue was aiming at the boss himself. The kishin egg. Chance had watched the man sic the guards on the employees with the intent to kill or nearly kill them, if the woman's case was anything to go by. The two of them didn't show mercy to murderers or attempted murderers in any case, so he didn't even hesitate to pull his own trigger and headshot the boss.

The workers were taking care of the last of the bosses, so Chance transformed back into his human form, wiping at his nose again. He was happy for the workers for no longer working for a murderer, but he was still feeling sore about Rogue's dismissiveness and he didn't know how to approach the subject without making himself more vulnerable to Rogue's dismissal.

He took his cowboy hat off and looked at it as the DWMA's massive bell rang out to declare the end of the school day. "Detention's served." His internal conflict made it difficult to know what to do. Rogue made him feel like no one and nothing else, but they couldn't be a team if he was going to be reduced to some spoiled kid at any disagreement. Maybe he should have shared more about his life before this, but... he hadn't known Rogue was known around these parts as Ronan, either. Maybe they owed it to each other to explain their lives before jumping to conclusions. Maybe Chance had something to learn about what Rogue was saying, since Rogue had expanded his horizons before already. But it sounded like Rogue was done with him. His close-mindedness had burned this bridge. "Sorry. I'll go back to mom and dad, huh?"
