Fae-Fae had slacked on so many of her duties for most of November, the last week she had been a blur throughout the house as she worked to catch up. It meant the house was a bit less clean -- but from her, that meant she was no longer scrubbing dust out of the windowsill corners with a toothbrush. Instead, she was re-compiling her research data, going out to gather more, and, of course, getting more weapons practice in.
This time, her training partner was Itztenoch. They'd decided to meet at the usual hill first thing in the morning before the sunrise.
For the usual reason, or course.
They were now having an animated conversation about Earth's 'sports.' Fae-Fae found it to be quite a noble activity -- improving your physical fitness just for the sake of doing so, just for the sake of overcoming challenges they invented.
"There are even sports for weapons," she continued, bouncing on the balls of her feet with fascination and excitement. She bobbed between one foot and the next, almost a dance. "I thought we could try one today. It is called the pistol duel."

"Oh, Fae-fae, you know I'd be honored."
Itztenoch hadn't been so eager to do something in what felt like weeks. Had gotten his a** up and out at the slightest beckon from Fae-Fae to do something more than lie low.
They had a new purpose, and yet? How he felt like he'd languished, in staying, in -- and this didn't feel like a mission anymore. Didn't feel cut and dry and clean - Yet Lyndin was so busy. Playing parlay between one realm in the next, keeping them well in house and home. It felt remiss to beg more of him, time, energy, anything.
To have their dearest Fae-Fae come along and drag him headlong out into 'doing'; he could've hugged her. He needed the distraction, he needed --- to shoot something, apparently! However little he cared for human sports, the idea of a game which related to the use of weapons, especially their firearms? How could he say no, when it piqued his interest so.
"Does this Duel have as many rules as their other events? The humans have so many endless games, sports, tourneys...." quirked an eyebrow as he rolled his shoulders and shifted into a better stance; scanned the not quite lightening horizon.
He was surprised how the humans played so recklessly with something so deadly; their entire species seemed to have a love of competing for a variety of reasons. Tenoch found he could appreciate that...competition for the sake of training, of building comradery. As many of their team events seemed to do. Amongst entire nations even.

With a nod at Itztenoch's question, Fae-Fae summoned her ComTech screen. A new vortex of data was slowly but surely forming on it, this time somewhat easier to navigate than the one Lyndin had seen a couple months ago. There was, of course, a region of it concerned with sports, and she quickly pulled up the data on pistol dueling she had collected. Demonstration was often easier to parse than words, so she offered him a clip from an Earth "movie" about "cowboys" in the "wild west," which she had annotated with some notes.
Compared to other sports, it wasn't complicated at all, thankfully: after positioning themselves a reasonable distance from each other, the objective was to draw and shoot first on a signal. Whoever hit their opponent first was the winner.
"It challenges the mind and reflexes," she said, "to seize an opportunity to fire." A useful exercise, she thought, for the marksmen among them. Fae-Fae liked to think Velyria would have approved of such a thing. "Randomizing a signal should be simple as well."

The word 'Gunslingers' came to mind - an image Tenoch derived from early mornings - or would they be considered late nights? Things that fell in black and white on horseback, and were shown only some wee hours in-between infomercials and normal-shows. What he'd come to learn were loud shiny sales pitches designed purely to gain the attention of oxygen and sleep deprived minds. In order to encourage people to purchase goods at low prices. He'd found the idea fascinating, had nearly fallen prey to it himself..
Until he remembered that he didn't understand what a 1-800 text or call line was, and then he came to his senses and remembered his own funds could be better spent on --- ooh - any other damned thing, that wasn't ceramic horse figures and 'soft enough for a baby' sweaters. Even if he thought they all very well deserved the softest of things.
He watched Fae's data scroll though, was drawn into it enough that he nodded along; grinned sharply for the genius of it all.
"It's a wonderful idea -- a good test of aim and skill under pressure."
It was all new, this? This was new, and he liked it. Felt something like adrenaline buzz just beneath the surface, burble up like joy into his tone. This would be a thing he liked - a good opponent. Not a battlefield scattered with unclear rules and a variant of enemies. No, a clear game, with a clear aim and rules fine tuned by Fae-fae.
"A new signal for every round will keep things fresh -- spontaneous."
Already he eyed the grassy knoll, scanned the predawn turf of the hillside, as if considering the odd challenges Earth terrain presented. Clinging dew, sloped angles...how well his weapons unique features would mesh with the surroundings; even if it was only to stun.
Even if it was only for play.

Tenoch's excitement brought a bright smile to Fae-Fae's face. After everything they had been through, it was nice to feel that energy again.
Now they just needed a good signal, preferably from an outside source. And since they were in that period of quiet between twilight and sunrise...
"We will fire at the first bird call," she decided. Then, bouncing with anticipation, she moved to assume position.

"Affirmative." Fleeting grin for the sudden surprise of having to remember the feathered creatures calls.
It was very 'clever of her', he thought. To choose something so varied, for what constituted as birdsong could've been. Oh, so many things indeed. Any number of things heard and unheard alike. Especially when he considered the long mental list of whistles, twits and early morning caws that'd echoed just beyond the edges of the dome in the days before everything had come crashing down around them.
Tenoch habitually checked himself as he turned about face and paced away. Counted his steps, settled suddenly still fingers over the hilt of his sidearm. Let his meandering thoughts go soft until they were silent and settled like the patch of pre-dawn darkness that lay over them like a cozy little blanket.
Blocked out his breathing --- his pulse --- because the birds welcomed the dawn...because he had to hear.

Fae-Fae's eager bouncing soon settled down as they assumed their position. As she opened her senses to the Earth, she became like a tall wildflower swaying in the breeze, slowly, slowly. The wind teased at her ears, and her nose, touching it with a foreign scent that distracted for a moment, from how simultaneously familiar and unfamiliar it was. The scent grazed at Tenoch briefly as well, as he broadened the distance between them.
Besides that, it was silent for quite a long time. They waited and waited. Fae-Fae's fingers twitched, and her ears itched for the sound she craved to hear.
A handful of snow fell from a tree nearby. She almost fired.
A vehicle on a gravel road in the distance drove past. She almost fired.
More silence followed. Seconds and minutes. Fae-Fae's breathing rattled impatiently. It had seemed like such a simple game from a bystander's perspective. Just wait and shoot. In reality, it was placing an enormous demand on her mind, to stay focused, to stay waiting, for an unpredictable period of time --

Fae-Fae is followed by a capricious breeze that carries the scents of old Velenia in its prime. The breeze can pick up, settle or change direction depending on her mood, and the scent varies depending on season and location. It adds an otherwordly air to her presence fellow Vanguardians might find curiously nostalgic.

A twittering rang in the sky. The blood all rushed to her limbs. Fae-Fae jumped around, whipped up her blaster and fired.
Wirestrung tight across his his shoulders, he carried all his tension there, in his neck, along his spine. Left his limbs loose, breathed in and out slow, because he needed to hear ---
Was so focused on listening, that the sudden interruption of something else made him twitch. Not a sound, no, but a scent? The sudden strangeness of it, a place he didn't know and how that didn't belong in the air - their air - what he'd come to know of Earth; it's crisp mornings, it's myriad of differently entangled smells. The subtlety carried in on a breeze was enough that it felt like a slap in the face.
Tugged Tenochs mind in one direction while his attention scattered in another.
Wanted to tip his nose up and turn all at once. Soft lilt of birdsong that dragged him back, made him flinch anew and hiss at hearing Fae's feet twist where she stood. The crunch of ice, and slosh of pebbles n grassy ground beneath her boots. He swallowed around adrenaline rush panic of tracking her well enough to aim.
Pulled his weapon free while feeling off -- fired.

There was an, ah! as Itztenoch's blaster shot caught Fae-Fae squarely in the eye, and she spent the next moment flinching, and squinting, and clutching her free hand near her face.
Before the glaring streaks in her eyes had passed, however, she'd already burst into a fresh fit of giggles. She had lost the competition, but had certainly gained much from the exercise.
It was definitely one worth repeating.

Tenoch hissed a breath for how the bolt of energy grazed his shoulder, froze and hitched a sigh for the static shock that twitched near enough to leave his senses buzzing beneath his suit.
Panicked briefly for the shocked sound and sight of Fae-Fae rolling on the ground. His aim could’ve certainly been better!! For all that he’d meant to hit her - he hadn’t wanted that.
Her laughter saved his conscience, even as he rushed up to offer his hand. “Alright pardner..let’s get you up.” That was gunslinger slang, was it not? He was no Dirty Dan who’d leave her in the dust. Oh no - he would be a Wyatt Burp, or maybe a Doctor of Holidays? The dentist?
Regardless —- flashed a smile to match, and tried his hardest not to ask after that mysterious scent which came and went on a whim — on the breeze. Maybe later? With Caocao, by the fire, they could talk again.
