Prompt 6 (Mysterious Mail): The mail is always bad this time of year, but it seems like something's gone a little extra wrong. You’ve received something that’s not quite right. Maybe it’s a box that looks like it’s from a completely different era, wrapped in brown paper and tied with dark twine. The box has scuffs and scrapes and a yellowed name tag--with your name and address on it. There is no return address and no indication where it came from. If you open it up you will find some sort of timeless item that feels as though it is easily decades old. It may not be particularly valuable, but this item seems to have been lost to time--and somehow ended up in your possession. Any time you look at it you are filled with the same sensation of timelessness.
Maybe it’s an old letter with no return address, no name on it; it's impossible to tell who it is from or how it got there, given that it might have arrived in your mailbox, your front door, or maybe it even just showed up inside your house. If you open it, the letter is dated from decades ago and contains some surprising information; it is a letter lost to time and contains some secret. The content of the letter is up to the player; it might contain a confession of love, an admission of guilt, the secret of some crime--no matter what the letter contains, it leaves you with news to reflect on. Do you try to seek out anyone mentioned in the letter? Do you investigate or try to hand the letter over to someone else? Does the content of the letter reflect your life in some way? ...Do you have to worry about someone breaking into your house to leave strangely coded messages?
Maybe you’ve gotten both and really need to phone up the post office to see what’s going on.
Dani climbed up the attic ladder, excited. This year, her family was counting on her to help with the Christmas decorating, including getting the decorations from the attic. Dad was busy running the family business, as well as taking care of 1 year old Darrell and Darren, the younger twins. Mom was working as Senior Engineer in the company as well as also taking care of the twins. Aunt Dia seemed to be the busiest, working in the business, going to Med School and helping with the twins. Her older brother Drew, a police officer, as far as most people knew, was on a training sabbactical. For those more informed - he was on his homeworld restoring it.
Her older sister Dria, Drew's twin, was in HITS, a sort of college, working at the family business and engaging in a underground shadow war to save the world, as well as helping take of the house, and helping with the younger twins. On second thought, she might be the busiest. Then there was Darius Ammun, Drew's cat - a normal cat to most unseeing eyes, but for those in the underground shadow war, he was a Mauvian or Guardian Cat, Bonded to Drew. Unfortunately, Drew had decided that he was needed here more at this time and also that, as Dari, as they sometimes called him, had newly Awakened and needed time to get acquainted with his abilitied and his duties. Dari was not amused. But he was trying. He seemed to busy in his own way.
Darren and Darrell were busy getting used to the world as one year olds. As for Dani, she had middle school, the underground war, and she helped where she could at home (she guessed they were all busy), which brought her back to the Christmas Decorations that she was now looking for.
Aunt Dia had said that they were on the far left side of the attic. So Dani tried to pick her way over there without steping on that stuff between the rafters (what was it called again?) where too weight would send you flying through the rafters. As she neared them, something caught her eye. An old package, unopened and obviously shipped through the mail at one point. It was yellowing with age and so was the unopened letter attached to it. She would have paid it no mind and moved on, but the addressees caught her eye; Andrew, Xandria, and Danielle Bones. She hated being called by her full name, but this had been addressed to her and Dria and Drew years ago.
She pulled up a trunk, and sat down. Carefully she deattached the letter and opened it to read. It read,
"Dear Andrew, Xandria, and Danielle,
I am your Maternal Grandmother, Audrey Boats. I have so much to atone for. And I am so sorry. I do not have much strength to write this, as I am dying, so I better get to the point. When your mother met your father, I did not approve, and when they married, I tore the family apart I was so angry. As Matriarch, I cut them off them from the family. Cancer has cleared my vision to see I had no good reason, especially when I learned that I have 3 beautiful Grandchildren. I tried to reach out again to your parents, but they had been stung too badly to be willing to work with me anymore. I want to make you at least have pictures of your mother when she was younger, so I have sent this scrapbook. Also, I am leaving an inheritance to each member of your family. I love you, and please forgive me.
Sincerely
Audrey Boats"
Dani was in shock. Wasn't Audrey Boats that famous owner of the billioniare Boats company, called, Boats' Boats? And Mom and Dad had always said Mom's family was dead...
