Quote:
Prompt 2 (Paint the Night Sky): Destiny City has already had its fair share of snowfall but for the past week it’s just been constant. There hasn’t been a clear sky in days, and even when it’s not snowing it’s still too cloudy to see anything. Finally, one night, the clouds have finally thinned--only to reveal something more surprising than the suddenly good weather. A glorious display of colorful light dances over Destiny City. Auroras are uncommon in this area, but it’s something unique to see. Especially because it almost seems like the colors blend like watercolors, and look like they’re deliberately weaving around each other.

Ever since she had finished her new weapon, Caelyna found herself fiddling with the shock baton every chance she got. She flipped it, twirled it, spun it, ran melee forms with it. Mostly, though, she was doing that by herself, and for herself.

Tonight, though, she had asked Fae-Fae to join her, for a little practice. She knew that there was much for her to learn, and Fae-Fae, with her ranged weapon, was an ideal partner to spar against. Many people on both sides of the conflict her eon Earth had ranged abilities, and Caelyna did not want to neglect the possibility that she might become caught up in one of them.

She bounced onto her toes, twirling her baton from one hand to the other as she waited for Fae-Fae to meet her outside.

Fae-Fae was already outside.

She had shown up a little early, and found a hiding spot behind a plump cedar sitting merrily in the snow. Her footprints were visible from the ground, but it looked like Caelyna hadn't noticed yet -- her head was up and searching for her training partner at eye level.

Good.

The Cadet suppressed a giggle as she balled up a wad of cold snow in her hands, and threw it with force at her friend.

Of all the things Caelyna had expected, a surprise attack was--perhaps obviously--not one of them. Especially not one that was cold, and wet, and slapped into her shoulder and made her start. She yelped, and whirled, looking for where the ball of snow that had impacted her came from.

"Fae-Fae!" She called, because she was sure it had to be her friend, since no one else should be outside. Also, she was pretty sure she could hear movement over by the cedar tree--and so she scooped up her own handful of cold, wet snow, and threw it in that direction.

If the motion in the trees didn't make her presence obvious, her laughter certainly did. As she leapt out from her hiding place behind the tree, Fae-Fae's freckly face had erupted into a familiar staccato of giggling that didn't cease when Caelyna's snowball pelted her dark hair.

She had her blaster in one hand, but another snowball in the other. She threw it at Caelyna, and immediately bolted. The training, the game, the chase -- was on.

Fae-Fae was not the only one dissolving into giggles; as Caelyna brought up her baton to knock the second snowball uot of the way, she descended into them herself. Sure, this wasn't traditional training--but it didn't have to be. Not everything on Earth had to be exactly as it was on Velencya, and honestly, infecting their little game with some joy seemed like exactly the thing they ought to do.

Besides, how was she supposed to do anything but feel elated, hearing Fae-Fae's laughter? The sound of her dearest friend's unabashed joy?

She did pause, though, to duck and make another ball of snow of her own. No reason to lose herself in distraction, even if the distraction was nice.

It was with a slightly dramatic "hiyah!" (she had seen it in Earth television programs, and it seemed to indicate a desire to fight harder!) that Caelyna loosed her snowball, darting after Fae-Fae in an effort to keep pace as well as she possibly could.

Watching the smile bloom across Caelyna's face emboldened Fae-Fae all the more to continue the little game she had started. Watching her laugh and run, her deep blue braid swinging along as she launched yet another snowball, she was so beautiful. The cold of winter was easily forgotten in the wake of that sight. Another handful off snow whapped wetly, square in the middle of her face, and Fae-Fae's smile didn't waver in the slightest. If anything, it only grew brighter.

She readied her blaster to intercept her friend's next assault -- but the target was too small, too fast for her to hit with a projectile. Now the collar of her uniform was dusted with damp snow. Fae-Fae's eyes glinted with the intent of enacting revenge. Still running, she started packing multiple snowballs into the crook of her arm so she could rapid-fire them at her opponent.

Oh, it was really a game now, and Caelyna was all too excited to participate. She could see Fae-Fae loading up multiple snowballs, and so she started scooping up extra of her own. The snow was wet, and thick, and packed easily, and although stopping to arm up meant she got hit--once, twice--it meant that she could meet Fae-Fae's throws with her own.

But so far, she was pleased with the performance of her new baton. She knew that Velyria had used something similar, had seen awkward Cadet portraits of her sister, but she hadn't been sure that it would come easily to her.

She had been foolish for worrying.

As she stretched back up, she realized that everything seemed cast in a strange, watercolor light. She blinked for a moment, and then looked up at the sky, and gasped.

"Fae-Fae, look," she said, voice soft and full of wonder. "What a strange atmospheric phenomenon...."

Lights rippled across the sky, painting it in soft hues that she had never seen in Earth's sky before.

This planet was such a wonder, it made her heart soft every time a new one was revealed to them.

As the game continued, Fae-Fae got pelted with so much snow that parts of her uniform were caked with it, and her fluffy hair had started to droop on one side from the weight of it. A merry blush tinged her freckly cheeks. She couldn't feel her nose, but she didn't care about that, or any of the other discomfort that might have otherwise given her pause. She was simply having too much fun!

Her blaster missed another attempt to break a snowball, and then -- Caelyna stopped, suddenly transfixed by the sky. Fae-Fae followed her direction upward, and the cheer lighting up her face flowed into a look of pure wonder.

She remembered, as a young child, the first time she'd seen one of the cosmic phenomena that would occasionally alight the thin bubble that protected Velencya from the vacuum of space. A burst of blooming color met their endless cityscape, and she had been quite taken in by it, staring up awestruck as the adults around her made their calm measurements and recordings of the event.

Fae-Fae reacted the same way here, at the dancing colors revealed to them by the Earth's sky. They almost seemed to be alive. They almost seemed to enjoy being there, together, mixing and interplaying and swirling against the starry blackness beyond them.

In spite of her Velencyan upbringing, she decided she didn't want to record this. She didn't want a camera between her and Caelyna and the sky, or to divide her thoughts with note-taking.

She simply wanted to be, with the sky, and her companion, for the moment.

Caelyna chanced only a brief glance away from the sky, at her friend, and felt her heart do a little flip-flop in her chest, to see Fae-Fae--messy and wet from their little battle game--lit beautiful by the lights.

Something stirred in her chest, an emotion that she wasn't quite sure she had a name for. It felt soft, and warm. It felt like wanting to be next to Fae-Fae for the rest of their lives, and to keep finding beautiful things like this wherever they went.

It felt like home.

In the peaceful silence, Caelyna moved to stand next to Fae-Fae, and turned her eyes back to the sky.

There were no words to say, nothing to disturb the scene. Just eyes on the magic in front of her--and maybe occasionally flicking to take in Fae-Fae's face.
