Quote:
Prompt 2 (Paint the Night Sky): Destiny City has already had its fair share of snowfall but for the past week it’s just been constant. There hasn’t been a clear sky in days, and even when it’s not snowing it’s still too cloudy to see anything. Finally, one night, the clouds have finally thinned--only to reveal something more surprising than the suddenly good weather. A glorious display of colorful light dances over Destiny City. Auroras are uncommon in this area, but it’s something unique to see. Especially because it almost seems like the colors blend like watercolors, and look like they’re deliberately weaving around each other.

Whilst snow at the time of the year was to be expected, it had been snowing constantly day for the past week - ok, so perhaps not [i[quite constantly, there had been that day after all when the snow had let up for a few hours–

But the skies had remained cloudy and overcast.

The snow had been heavy enough to put a dampener on Liryn's pre-arranged meet up plans, but the small tabby bobtailed mauvian had been determined that tonight was the night that it was going to go ahead, and he wasn't about to let the snow stop him - at least not this time round.

It appeared, however, that somewhere in between the early afternoon and the evening that the snow had finally cleared up, leaving clear skies in its wake - which was how Liryn came to be half-trotting down the sidewalk, towards the place where he was planning to meet up with his friend Eleonora–

And it was a beautiful night for a meet up, what with the way that light danced across the skies above the city, colours dancing and blending together as they wove around each other, as if on a giant and endless canvas.

Unlike her twin, Eleonora was not immune to the cold. If anything, as the Senshi of Heat, it made her that much weaker to it.

Knees bouncing so uncontrollably that she almost resembled one of those wind-up children's toys jiggering across the floor. Teeth chattering loud enough that if it wasn’t that she diligently brushed them twice a day then it would have sounded like they were about to break. Never in this lifetime would she be accused of being like Elsa because good lord the cold did bother her every day.

Why oh why couldn’t her sphere grant her some sort of immunity to it, just exude a natural heat so she didn’t have to tote around a fleece blanket which was wrapped snugly around her. Sure, it kept her shoulders warm and ears as well - can’t forget about those. Her legs, however, had no such luck. Wind slipped past the fold and the sandals she wore offered no protection to the compacted snow she stood upon.

Try as she might to enjoy the ribbons of colors above her, Eleonora desired to be someplace where she could admire it from behind a widow with a heater pointed directly at her. Hell, she’d resort to using a hairdryer to warm up her extremities if that’s what it took. But before she could abandon the meeting place, the Senshi of Heat felt a familiar aura.

“Li-li-i-liry-ry-nnnnn” Lips pulled into a trembling smile, the pale-haired Senshi hustled in haphazard haste to close the distance between them so she could scoop him up and save his little toe beans from possible frostbite.

Liryn didn't really much mind the cold either, after all cold wasn't like nasty, icky rain–

But then again he also had a fluffy winter coat to help off-set the change in weather. Eleonora, was one of his though and Liryn would have come out anyway - even if there had been nasty, icky rain.

The warm flicker of an Order aura, distracted him from his perusal of the lights dancing and painting their way across the skies.

It belonged to a senshi, a basic senshi - and whilst auras had never been an exact science - it felt close.

It was also, not-so-coincidentally around where he and Eleonora had agreed to meet, so Liryn wasn't surprised to see the familiar pale-haired senshi as he got ever closer.

He half-trotted and half-bounced over to her, even as Eleonora in turn, crossed the distance separating them.

"Ele!"

Eleonora could feel the sting of hot tears pricking the corner of her eyes. She batted them away with a swipe of the blanket she held onto closely before Liryn could see them. Until this singular moment, she didn’t quite realize how much she missed the bobtail Mauvian let alone how much she desperately needed to see him.

Since the fight she had with Fiona regarding the aliens, Ele really didn’t feel like she had anyone else to turn to or confide her thoughts in. Athene was no doubt someone she could trust but the worry was that he shared similar thoughts as her sister. It’s not to say she didn’t value his opinion; of everyone, he was probably one of the most level-headed people she knew. But right now she just wanted someone who could understand where she had been coming from when making the decisions that kind of brought her to this point.

“God I’ve missed you!” Her voice was full of complex emotions as she crouched down low, not enough to sink her knees into the snow, but they were close enough to fill the chilling bite of the ground beneath them, and held her arms out in a wordless request for a hug from a kind-hearted friend. “I’m so glad you’re safe.” Eleonora wasn’t sure what she would have done if he had fallen victim to the chaotic energy that overflowed from the generators that night.

Unlike Athene, Liryn hadn't been involved in the going ons in early November, having instead accompanied his cousin Iðavöllr on her first visit to her Wonder–

Well okay so more like badgered the Polaris page into taking him along - but it wasn't as if anyone was tallying. Right?

Although, pleasant as the trip had been and as interesting as seeing the frozen landscape of Iðavöllr and the pretty ice flowers that contrasted so very much with the warmth and dryness of Athene had been, a part of Liryn still felt guilty that he hadn't been there after hearing Athene's muddled accounts of just what had happened - because whilst supporting Iðavöllr and helping her to find out more about knighthood was important, he should have been there.

He should have been with his people - and he considered Alcor to be as much his, just as he considered Athene and Eleonora to be his - for all that he hadn't been the one to awaken Alcor.

He acknowledged Eleonora's wordless request by bounding into her outstretched hands, purr already deep in his throat as he rubbed his face against her–

And whilst his nose was most likely cold from the cold, hopefully his cold-hating friend wouldn't mind.

"And I've missed you too Ele" Liryn finally said at last, the purr still tinging his voice, because it had been far too long.

Sometimes all a person needs is a hug to lift the burdens of life from their weary shoulders or to hear the sound of a cat's purr to bring peace to a tired soul. Fortunately, Liryn had both to offer in spades and in this singular moment, Eleonora felt calmer than she had been since the Vanguard arrived.

“I- I take it Athene told you what happened?” The Senshi of Heat rose, the fleece blanket draped around her shoulders and hung just an inch above her feet. Chunks of snow clung to the fibers and it took a little elbow bump to shake them off.

The expression she wore looked full of guilt.

Since their return from the moon, Eleonora had worried over her sister endlessly. Keeping a bit of a distance if only to avoid another fight but still just watching to make sure that Fiona was still herself not some soon-to-be monster. Because of this, she had yet to check on Athene, to see if he was alright. Caught up in the panicked moment, desperation grabbed hold of her with a vice-like grip. Only vaguely did she remember catching a glimpse of the black that bled into his uniform as it was into her own.

Still, that was a paltry excuse to not check in with him and for that, she felt shame and regret.

Liryn had been content to just sit in Eleonora's lap and purr, because he liked hugs almost as much as he liked scritches, but at his friend's question he shifted.

Not much, but just enough so that his purplish eyes could look upwards.

"Yes," he said quietly and for a moment his purr-touched voice was unusually subdued as Liryn thought back on just how close he had come to losing his friends whilst he and Iðavöllr had been on her Wonder "Athene told me."

There was guilt too in his purplish eyes, as he gave Eleonora a gentle head-butt, because he should have been there to help and he hadn't been.

The bond between him and Athene would have told him if the dark-haired senshi had fallen to the darkness that had come so close to taking him - at least Liryn had to believe that it would have–

But what if Eleonora had fallen?

What if Alcor had fallen?

Would it have been like Athene and Atë? A senshi that Athene insisted had once been something of a friend for all that Liryn wasn't sure that he could ever believe it.

Would have been like others that Chaos had taken?

It had come so close to happening and he hadn't been there.

He hadn't been there.

He gave Eleonora another gentle head-butt "I'm sorry that I wasn't there.

“Hey now,” Ele hooked a finger under Liryn’s chin, encouraging him to look up at her. “You have nothing to be apologetic for. I think we can all agree that we’re glad you were safe.”

Last time they had followed Caedus’ instructions and entered the Dark Kingdom to retrieve the Code, amongst other priceless items including several starseeds, their small group of four had nearly becom two when the ground beneath them began fracturing. To this day she clearly remembered watching Alcor scoop the bob-tailed mauvian up in her arms as she ran towards the door where her and Athene were standing.

There was a ‘twin moment’ that was unspoken communication that was impossible to explain how exactly it worked. Alcor later confessed that she truly didn’t think she’d make it and almost tossed Liryn at them. Eleonora knew. She caught a glimpse of that panicked look in her sister's eyes and knew exactly what she was about to do.

Fortunately, the ground held together long enough for them to rejoin at the bottom of the stairwell and retreat away from the crumbling battlefield.

“It feels so surreal. What happened in the ambush. Alcor,” The Senshi of Heat swallowed thickly. “She wasn’t turning into a corrupt like Athene and I,” her eyes saddened. “Her hands had claws and it was like her magic was trying to escape her; I don’t know how else to explain.” There had been a circle of ice around them as if a puddle had suddenly frozen over.

“She won’t talk to me about it. We’re still kind of… fighting.” Despite her best efforts to apologize, Fiona seemed to be actively avoiding her. “I messed up... Big time. But if she won’t talk to me then maybe she’ll talk to you.” Liryn was always easy to open up to

"That's what Athene said" Liryn admitted as his purplish eyes looked up and at Eleonora, but whilst a part of him knew that the dark-haired senshi did not resent him for not being there and it seemed that Eleonora felt the same, a part couldn't help but feel bad that he hadn't been there.

For a moment he found himself thinking on a future that he had promised himself that he would do all in his power to make sure that it wouldn't come true. Found himself thinking of that one last fight that he hadn't been able to walk away from and of a choice made that should it come to it he would make again and again.

"But you - all of you are my senshi" and his voice was unusually serious "And that means that my place is with you - no matter how dangerous" he rubbed his chin against Eleonora's fingers.

Because he was a mauvian and his duty as a mauvian was to protect.

Athene had told him about the chaos, had told him that it had affected them - all of them - and had admitted in his quiet way just how close he had come to giving in, of how pervasive it was–

But he hadn't told him just how bad it had been for Alcor, hadn't gone into the full details.

He hadn't had to for Liryn to know that it had been bad.

"I'd be happy to try and talk to Alcor" And he hadn't been aware that Eleonora and Alcor had been fighting before all of this, but it wouldn't have changed his answer even if he had "Or ask Athene to" a quiet feline purr as he added "Athene can be a pretty good listener - and whilst he hasn't been as active as he used to be what with everything with his father - I know that he wouldn't mind talking to Alcor either."

It had been a while since Eleonora had a chance to talk with Athene, at least one on one, so the mention that there was something going on with his father came at a bit of a surprise and left her feeling significantly worried. Guilt gnawed at her for letting time slip by so easily and for not taking the initiative to reach out, not as a senshi, but as a friend. To check-in and make sure everything was alright or to simply hang out.

“I think she would appreciate talking to either of you. Or both really.” She couldn’t say with certainty anymore since it was hard to tell what was on Alcor’s mind these days. But in terms of advice, she was always more receptive to what Athene and Liryn had to say.

There were many things she wished to say, emotions she needed to parse through. But Ele's voice hitched in her throat and silence fell between them for a long moment. This level of fear, of sadness, of uncertainty… it was unfamiliar to her and instead of asking for help, she kissed the star atop his head and offered a weak smile.

“You’re my little light, Liryn. Even in our darkest hour, I keep looking to you to bring us back together.” It wasn’t fair to put such a weight upon him but in times of joy and times of sorrow, the little bob-tailed mauvian was the one she turned to most often. And so, all she could think to add was a quiet “Thank you.”

"You don't to thank me" Liryn said with the purr still in his voice "My place is always going to be with you because you are my senshi" he looked up into her eyes again, his purplish eyes bright as he added "And more than that you are all also my friends."

And while Liryn would do a lot for his senshi, he would do even more for his friends.

He continued to purr quietly as he considered things for a few moments "While I am happy to talk to Alcor as well, I think that Athene should probably try to her first" he said at last - and not just because Athene could be a pretty good listener, but because unlike him Athene had been there

That and perhaps in this case another senshi perspective would be better.

Perhaps.

Regardless of any future talks went however, Liryn was still going to make sure to check in on Alcor himself too.

“I think you’re right, it’d be wise to let Athene talk to Alcor first.” He was there when it happened and could perhaps relate or sympathize with her sister’s experience in a way that she could not. Between the two of them, there was a disconnect and Eleonora hoped that they would be able to help repair what was broken. “Their personalities are somewhat similar enough that I think it’d be easier for her to open up to him at least.”

Eleonora was still obviously saddened by this whole situation and yet she still tried to smile, if not for herself than for Liryn who was always so sweet and kind to them. How in the world they were blessed to have him as their guardian was beyond her but she was thankful for it every day.

“It’s freezing out here.” An obvious statement to make but she didn’t want to keep dwelling on sad moments. “Would you like to come over for a while? I can make us some cocoa with marshmallows or tea if you’d prefer.” Something hot to hold before her fingers fell off from frostbite.

Liryn nudged at Eleonora gently and when he spoke his cheerful voice was as gentle as the nudge had been.

"I'll talk to Athene later today" he promised, because he knew that the dark-haired senshi that he had (unbeknownst to Athene) effectively just volunteered up, truly wouldn't mind–

Especially as unlike Liryn, Athene had been there.

Although Liryn was also perfectly happy to try and track Alcor down himself if need be - in fact, he decided abruptly, he'd do it anyway - because it had been a while since he and Alcor had talked–

But he would wait until Athene had tried to talk to her.

He gave Eleonora another gentle nudge at her next question, the normal cheerfulness back in his voice as he said "I'd love to come over for cocoa."

Because whilst he wasn't as fussed about the cold as his friend, given his winter coat, Liryn wasn't ready to stop hanging out with his friend.

He closed a purplish eye in a deliberate wink as he added "Especially if there are marshmallows on offer too."

And perhaps he might go ahead and drop Athene a quick message on the way over after so that the dark-haired senshi would at least have something of a heads up before the two of them spoke.

Perhaps - but right now there was good company–

And some cocoa and marshmallows with his name on it.
