Amsvartnir sighed heavily as he trudged through the streets of Destiny City. Compared to the other day, he felt... restless. Needy. Bored. Something like that, anyway, or maybe all of the above. He itched to do something, but what, he didn't know. So here he was, out on patrol, trying to figure out... Something, anything? What to do with his life? He had no idea. The best he could guess was trying to fill some hole in his heart and soul with no good guesses as to what to dump in said hole.

...Candy sounded like a nice idea. Maybe if he found a nice, quiet spot to power down, he could slip into a corner store and get something to snack on. Maybe a Kit-Kat. Or a Crunch bar.

His stomach growled.

...Or, something more substantial. Most places still had hot dogs and stuff out this late, right?

But, of course, before he could make any decisions, a Chaos aura popped up. And not just any Chaos aura.

A General.

s**t. He hoped he could survive whatever was about to happen, because he was pretty sure running away would only make them give chase, and staying still allowed them to come to him regardless.

Sylvite's emotions were finally settling down a little bit.

Maybe it was just 'cause time had passed, or maybe the fact that she was getting back into field work was helping. Running into the grumpy Knight hadn't been pleasant, exactly, but at least Sylvite had gone home after that with a database entry and feeling like she'd done something useful.

She'd decided to try doing it again. It was a Squire's aura she'd felt this time, and she teleported over in that direction.

Then she froze, because it was him.

She'd read the note a while ago, and for days after, instead of sleeping, she'd rolled around in bed, her head and stomach spinning so much that there were time's she'd almost thrown up. Obviously, she'd noticed afterwards how he never showed up to things.

It was still a total shock to actually see him in the dumb white outfit.

Sylvite probably should've been like Jet. She should've been decisive. She should've teleported up before either of them had a chance to think, and shoved a dagger into his throat.

Instead she blinked, and then she blinked again. Her chest felt hot, angry, but when her voice came out, it was mostly sad.

"So you are a traitor."

Well, crap. He'd been teleported to. He nearly tripped over himself in his rush to set up a defensive stance, but her face and voice stopped him in his tracks.

"General Sylvite?" he asked in a bit of a strangled tone, "I... I never expected to see you again..."

He looked ashamed, staring at the ground as she rightfully accused him of being a traitor. He really, really didn't want to do this.

"I'm glad you got my letter, at least," he said with a weak smile, "Albite didn't. Last time I saw him, he had no idea what I was talking about."

He sighed, shuddering. "I'm sorry I did that to you, General. But I—I mean, I said it all in my letter, really. I felt... poisoned. Not strengthened. Chaos did nothing good for me. I had to leave. I needed to do teshuvah, as much as I could since I can't really seek out everyone I took energy from. And now I'm someone who can really put efforts of good into the world. For there is no future for the evil man; / The lamp of the wicked goes out."

"Look, I get it if you didn't wanna fight," said Sylvite, faster, and now the anger was coming through in her voice.

She'd had parts of this conversation with herself a million times, while she was walking, or brushing her teeth, or staring at the barracks, and now the words came out all at once.

"I know war's super hard. I know being a soldier kinda sucks sometimes. I tried to give you a heads up about how serious all this was back before I recruited you, but I know getting warnings from a little girl in pink is a lot different than the reality of our duties, or almost getting your face bitten off by a youma in the rift. I know."

Her voice grew louder. Her fingers shook.

"I woulda given you plushies. I woulda gotten you therapy. I woulda given you time off." She could feel something getting all hot behind her eyes. "I would've given you forever off, if you wanted, but this isn't you taking forever off, is it?"

She stepped forwards, even as the tears began to well up. "You're still fighting, you're just fighting for the side that kidnaps and tortures literal children."

Her knives appeared in her hands.

"That's what makes you a traitor."

Amsvartnir swallowed, taking a defensive stance and holding his cane diagonally in front of his body.

"Kidnaps and tortures literal children?" he echoed softly, looking at her with concern. "And who told you that? Because I've seen the kids in action. And the way their guardians interact with them. I haven't seen anything of the sort."

He shuddered, trying not to cry. "Therapy and plushies would've been nice, but..." He shook his head. "I couldn't just be a passive member of the Negaverse. That's not how teshuvah works. I need to actively be and do better. I couldn't just abandon my religion. My spiritual needs."

"You wanna see proof of what they do to kids?"

Sylvite tossed the knife in her left hand off to the side somewhere. It clattered against the concrete of the sidewalk. Then, she bit the fingertip of her left glove and started to tug. "Not their kids," she said between mouthfuls of fabric, shaking her arm free. "I don't care that they awaken people young."

The glove came off. Sylvite tossed that to the ground, too.

She held her arm out to him, palm up. The scar was old, but it was there. The skin on her wrists that should've been soft was all bumpy and discolored where the ropes had been.

"They tied me up and left me in a warehouse to die when I couldn't answer their questions. I was fourteen. They messed up Feldspar's leg when he was that age, too, and he wasn't even an agent!"

Sylvite sniffed, the tears really coming now.

"We could've worked with your religious thing, too, but, not now."

She summoned the knife back.

"'Cause traitors have to die."

Amsvartnir swallowed, eyes wide. ********. What? His lips parted in shock and his eyes darted back up to Sylvite's face.

Fourteen.

But how old had the people in White Moon been? Fourteen, too? Everyone he knew had been turned into this war young, so young, and he'd been lucky, just had his eighteenth birthday when he had been corrupted. And he knew there were dark secrets the Negaverse had he didn't know, things he didn't seek out. It wasn't hard to infer.

"I can't stop you from trying to fight me," he whispered, holding his cane up again, "But I can stop you from killing me. I'm sorry, General."

He began to channel his magic, swinging his cane and watching the stars scatter.

As he whips his cane in circles around himself, a shower of stars spews from it in a ten foot radius. The stars give a light burning sensation to those affected by Chaos, while infusing gentle warmth into those affected by Order. While the magic is being channeled, the burning sensation may feel like stinging, or a bad sunburn, but Chaos players can choose if the stars cause real or lasting burn damage. This magic can be channeled for 35 seconds.

The knives were in Sylvite's hands, but her fingers shook. She talked big, but she stood frozen, eyes locked on his face.

Then, he attacked.

The stars she might have liked under different circumstances. They were cute, they were her aesthetic and everything, but like so much of Order's deceptively pretty stuff, when they got too close, they burned.

Her exposed arm tingled and reddened and ached.

He hurt her. He gave her a reason to fight back.

She slashed out.

It wasn't a good attack, with proper form, the way Jet would've done. She couldn't even see what she was doing. Maybe it was the light, or the pain, but her tears were really getting bad now. They filled up her eyes so that everything was blurry, and they started to leak down her face.

"Traitors die," she repeated, weakly, but afterwards a sob caught in her throat.

Her attack was so sloppy, Amsvartnir stopped channeling his magic after he dodged.

This wasn't right. It wasn't right of him to attack her like this, when she was so vulnerable.

Because of him.

"You can just not say you ever saw me," he said tenderly, leaning on his cane and watching her. "Sylvite..."

She just cried harder. Now her whole body was shaking really bad. She sniffled, then sobbed again when he had to go talk to her like that.

There was no way she could fight like this.

There was no way she could-

Sylvite reached up to rub at her eyes. She nodded, weakly.

Then she vanished.
