It is this time of the year, when the weather starts to get cooler and the crops are all brought in, that the people of Tendaji begin to look back. They look back at the friends they've made over the past year, the people they've come to love, and those they have lost. It's a monumental time of self-reflection, of examining the world they live in and everything that they went through over the past year.
And it's a time to give thanks. Thanks to their gods, to each other, to themselves. It's a beautiful reflective time of year, and one that many Tendaji natives will celebrate with little gifts, special harvest feasts, or a moment alone with those they love.
[ Sometimes we don't spend enough time thanking others for all they do. Or thanking ourselves for the strength and growth we've gone through. In this prompt, we're looking for self-reflection, contemplation, and moments of thanks between your characters and the important ones in their lives. ]

Kai was unhappy. Pello had announced that he was leaving to travel, and she would have to stay behind. He was her closes friend, and he was leaving her! She knew something was up, knew that things had changed between them, but she didn’t know it would extend to him moving across the world. Kai had sulked since then, sitting by a ravine with her legs dangling out in the void. This was a time to be thankful, but she was not thankful one bit. Why would he leave her during such a time? Couldn’t he have waited for her?
Kai sighed frustrated.

Moani had been looking about for some new shiny items for their collection. They were taking out some pieces from their collection to give out as gifts and as such needed to replenish their stock before doing so. They didn’t give out anything they didn’t have doubles or triples for of course because that would be unpractical.
They spotted something shinny near a Hapuna and swam over.
“Excuse me, you seem to be sitting on a shell that I would like to have.” The girl seemed to be angry for some reason or another, perhaps she ought to have a gift to cheer her up.

Kai turned towards the voice and then looked down, shifting herself over a bit to see what the other wanted. She saw the shell and picked it.
“This thing?” It looked quite ordinary to her; it was a bulbous shell with red polka dots all over it. Kai didn’t see the appeal. “Looks quite ordinary.” She extended it to the other. So much for sulking by herself, why did people always have to ruin her fun? Just like Pello leaving her, people were so inconsiderate. She let go when they grabbed it from her and then turned back to the ravine.

Moani took no offence, of course, most people didn’t know some of the treasures they held.
“That’s the one!” They grabbed it when the girl extended it to them and put it in their bag. She really was in a bad mood huh? “I only have one other one of these, they’re a little rarer than some other shells. I’m going to give it to you.” Moani extended it back to the girl. “Sort of like a thanks!” They didn’t know if this would cheer her up, but usually, gifts tended to have the kind of effect on everyone else.

Kai turned to the other and made a face before looking down at the shell.
“Why are you giving it to me then? You don’t know me.” She threw her hands up angrily. Pello knew her, she’d shared everything with Pello. Pello would know that she wasn’t into collecting shells. But Pello wasn’t here and she was stuck with this stranger who seemed intent on gifting her something when they didn’t even know her.
“Why don’t you leave? Everyone leaves.” Kai gave another frustrated sigh but still took the shell that was extended to her. A gift was a gift after all.

“You seem to be upset with someone,” Moani started, floating over to her side and taking a seat next to her. They ignored the look the girl gave them. “Is it a friend?” They was making a wild guess, but the girls words seem to point to a close friend.
“You know friends come and go, but you will find each other again. Just because they left that doesn’t have to be the end of your friendship. I would be thankful if I had a friend like that.” Plenty of their friends had gone off and were doing their own thing right now.

“My best friend left, travelling the world.” Kai began tearing up. “Left me behind. We always said we would travel together.” She angrily wiped the tears away. She wondered what had changed, what had put a wedge between them. Now once she was finally of age she was going to have to go out and travel by herself. And she would! She didn’t need anyone.
“I was thankful,” She amended, but when you didn’t know if you were going to see your best friend again it sucked. “I still am, but it sucks.” She was going to have to work harder, be better now.

“Well, I am sure you will reconnect!” Moani began, as they swung their legs back and forth. “I want to travel too, where do you want to go? What do you want to do?” Maybe if they changed the subject to something a little more lighthearted the girl wouldn’t cry. Moani didn’t like seeing people cry, even if they barely knew them. They were sad for her of course, but these were normal things that happened in life. While Moani didn’t see the big dramatics of it, because to be fair they did think the girl was being a little over the top, she understood.

“I want to go to Tendaji, that’s where we always said we’d go visit.” Maybe she ought to stop thinking of them as a we and more as an I. She’d wanted to travel before Pello too, just Pello had seamlessly fit into that plan. “I want to perform, acrobatics! I heard there is such a thing as a circus, and I want to go there and perform. I want people to travel from all over to see me.” She always loved the costumes and the drama in some of the performances, with everyone’s eyes on her. Kai felt it was just her kind of thing. “And you?”

“That sounds very neat.” Moani said, tho they barely knew anything about circuses. It sounds fun? “I want to discover treasures. I love collecting, as you may have noticed, and I just want to find specials unique things.” They’d always loved that kind of thing and once they were able to get out there to look for things no one else had, the possibilities seemed endless. “Maybe I will visit you in this circus place, I like watching shows.” They hadn’t been to many, but it sounded fun. “Which is why we should be thankful we are able to do these things.”

“Yes, yes,” Kai rolled her eyes. “Be thankful of the friends in our lives. Be thankful that we are able to travel and see things. I am very thankful.” The only thing she was thankful for right now was the fact that this stranger had at least cheered her up somewhat. “Thanks for cheering me up random stranger, but I think I need to head home.” Her mother would be wondering where she was right about now even tho she had told her she was going for a short walk. “I’ll try and remember to be more thankful next time.”

“That’s…” Moani shook their head. Not what they had meant but they were not about to correct her. They didn’t think the girl was thankful, but she was cheered up at least and that was better than nothing right? Moani stood up and stretched herself a bit.
“I’m Moani by the way,” If they met again, maybe she would remember their name. Moani planned to go see her perform or at least look for her if she did indeed decide to travel by herself. The girl did seem determined though, so they did think she’d make it out alright.

Kai also got up and stretched, pocketing the shell she’d been given. She paused before leaving, turning to Moani. “Thanks Moani,” she wanted to sound sincere. “Thanks for cheering me up and for the shell. I will remember you if you ever come see me perform.” With a final nod of her head, Kai turned around and swam home. She was going to travel with that shell, take it with her and remember Moani for their next meeting. She was sure they would meet again, perhaps not in the near future but at some point and she was thankful for that because it meant someday she would meet back with Pello too.

Moani only nodded their head as they watched Kai swim away back to their home. Maybe she had been wrong… Though the girl had made no move to even introduce herself which left Moani confused on their whole meeting. Ah well, they weren’t going to dwell on it.
They bent down and picked up another shell that the girl had been sitting on. They had also spotted this one but this one was much rarer. It was back to business for now! That’s why they were here, after all, not to foul around making friends. It was time to get back on task before the end of the day so she could give out her gifts.
