Anahita enjoyed the afternoons when her father could teach her archery. The young girl had grown fond of the bow and arrows since she idolized her father’s work and knew that she wanted to learn all that she could about being an archer. Her favorite gift from her parents was the recent ivory bow with the delicate engravings her mother had carved into it with glasswork embedded deeply inside like tiny crystals. Her father had even created arrows for it which she held tightly in her hands today as she waited for him by her favorite spot, a large boulder that jutted out over the nearby stream.

Jhin rotated an apple in his hand as he opted for a quick lunch after his morning patrol. The ranger had originally intended to spend the afternoon nestled together with Kyril but Anahita had quickly reminded him about her shooting lessons for the day. With Tyka being gone more often he was the only one she truly wanted to learn from and so Jhin found himself jogging across the field so that he could meet with his daughter by the stream that cut through the forest near their stone cottage that he had renovated with Kyril and others for their family.

“Over here!” Anahita waved as she saw her father come into view. Her excitement was obvious as she jumped down from her perch to greet her father even though she tried to appear a bit more casual since that was more mature. The more mature she acted the more responsibilities she could take on and then she could become an apprentice under one of the rangers so that she could learn more about survival skills and fighting. Such thoughts were why Ana did her best to become reliable and keep out of trouble.

“Hello there, Ana.” Jhin smiled as he waved towards his daughter. Even if she tried to look more responsible the ranger still saw her as his eager daughter, someone that was a bit too young for the rangers just yet. Honestly if he had it his way he would never let his daughters fight but Kyril was adamant about allowing the girls to live their dreams. Unfortunately for him it seemed Ana was invested in becoming a ranger which made Jhin both proud and worried.

“Are you ready for lessons today?” Ana asked as Jhin approached, her gaze skimming over him as she realized he was still in his patrol outfit. “Did you need to rest up first?” Worry flickered across her expression as she didn’t want to burden her father with these requests. What if he grew tired of her bothering him like this? Who would teach her archery then?

Jhin reached out and ruffled Ana’s hair. “I’m fine.” He replied with a chuckle. “I had a bite to each and I’m ready to go. How about you?” As he spoke Jhin took a final bite of his apple before tossing it further into the forest where the remaining core could decompose. Once that was taken care of the ranger made certain that the training dummy was in place so that his daughter could practice.

“I’m fine!” Replied Ana firmly as she grabbed her bow and an arrow. “So how do we begin?” She asked with a small smile, almost shy as she waited for her father’s instruction. She had played around a lot before and learned from Tyka but this was her first major archery lesson from her father. So admittedly the girl was a bit nervous and hoped that she wouldn’t disappoint him.

“With your posture.” Jhin held up his own bow as if to demonstrate. “I know you understand the basics since Tyka taught you but this is a bigger bow that you have now. We’ve moved on from the smaller practice ones, okay? So please be careful while you work with it.” Their recent gift to Ana was also a point of change as it was an actual bow that she could fight with if needed, nothing like the practice bow she had before with its dull arrows and weaker strings.

“Alright.” Ana nodded as she posed with the bow. “Since I’m right handed I need to hold it with my left hand and angle my left side towards the target, right?” She stood at a right angle even with her toes pointed towards the target like her great aunt had taught her. A steady arm to hold the bow as she kept her shoulders square to the target as well.

“Good.” Jhin nodded in approval at his daughter’s position. He could tell that she had truly taken Tyka’s instructions to heart simply from the posture Ana demonstrated. “Just try to relax a bit more. If you’re too tense the arrows won’t fly as freely.” He instructed, a hand gently patting Ana’s shoulders so that she lowered them instead of keeping them poised upwards from tension. “Next?”

“Should I nock my arrow?” Ana pulled an arrow from her quiver, the pale wooden shaft a stark contrast to the pink and violet feathers decorating the ends. The index feather had to be facing away from the bow and so Ana twisted the arrow until the violet facing was facing away. She listened intently as she raised the arrow up towards the string to nock it, the snapping sound confirming her placement. Once that was done the youngling glanced towards her father as she waited for his approval.

Jhin nodded as he watched Anahita. How had she grown so quickly? She was still the stubborn, feisty child he had always known that wanted to take actions first and ask questions later in his heart. The one who had been challenged by some of the older apprentices and had taken a hunting knife to cut her hair into a short bob since some of the boys teased her for it. I don’t want anyone to think I’m weak or that my hair will slow me down! A small smile crossed his lips as he noticed the short braid that was tucked over her shoulder, something that Kyril had taken to doing for the girl since she learned about the incident and Ana’s hair grew back. “You’re doing great.” Jhin praised her before following suit and demonstrating with his own bow and arrow. “Just make certain that you place your fingers more like mine so that you’re hooking the string with your index finger above this particular point. Your middle and ring finger should always be below, okay?”

“Got it.” Ana pursed her lips before slowly following her father’s instructions, her hand shifting slightly as she kept her arrow in place while spreading her fingers out more like his. Now she had to worry about her bow hand, right? Ana flexed her fingers from beneath the short gloves with arm guards and waited for her father. She was fairly familiar with this step since she had always carried some form of toy bow as a child and her great aunt had taught her well. Her bow hand had to be on the inside of what the rangers called the life line and then her thumb needed to point towards the target. As she tightened her grip the girl glanced towards her father and waited for his approval before doing anything else.

“Perfect.” Jhin smiled at Anahita before tightening his grip on his bow. “Now to properly extend it so that your shot doesn’t just go straight towards the ground.” He shifted his shoulders and slowly, ever so slowly, brought the bow arm to shoulder height and made certain to keep his shoulders down as he had earlier instructed Anahita. Once his elbow was turned away from the string he slowly walked closer to his daughter so that she could see clearly. “Remember no tension in your shoulders, lower them and then once you’ve leveled everything out the arrow can fly.” He drew the string in a straight line towards his face before quickly letting go, the arrow flying dead center into the target.

Ana’s gaze widened as she watched the shot go perfectly into the dummy. “Okay!” She could do this! She knew the string had to pull evenly towards her face as an anchor point and as long as she could learn to relax her shoulders more, make the action more natural than forced the arrow should fly just like her father’s did! Of course when she let go of the string the arrow instead flew towards the left and skidded to a stop in the ground by the target instead of actually into the dummy. “Oh.” A flush of shame covered her cheeks as she slowly peered towards her father.
