Thinking of himself as Peregrine was very strange. But he needed to get used to it so he could smoothly say his name when he was out and about in his human glamor, in case people decided to talk to him. He spent a lot of his time just human-watching, trying to understand the customs of the area in which he lived and learn more about Earth in general.

Today he was riding the bus for his human research.

Someone came on and sat down next to him, which made him tense briefly but he quickly got over it when he saw the very eye-catching shirt the person wore.

"Ooh! What's your shirt about?" he asked, perking up.

This trip was one of his worse bus rides to his work. Not only did he leave his Switch off the charger so it died before he had to leave, but he also hadn't finished the update for Animal Crossing so he could satisfy his current gaming fixation while he was on the bus. Instead, he was back to playing Genshin on his phone and getting moderately motion sick —

But a stranger sat next to him and then talked to him and Laike startled and nearly dropped his phone onto the bus floor but he slammed his knees together at just the right moment and caught the phone on his pants before it went shooting through his thigh gap — His shirt…?

Once he pocketed his phone, Laike pinched a couple handfuls of his shirt and pulled the material out far enough that he could remember what he was wearing that day.

"Oh. Um. It's a Ni No Kuni shirt. It's a game, um. My sister got it for me. The shirt, not the game." Laike rubbed the back of his head.

Who sat next to strangers on buses…?

"Oh gosh, I'm sorry!" Peregrine fretted as he watched the man drop his phone, "I, uh, you okay?"

He grinned sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. He'd learned that was a gesture made when people felt awkward, and he certainly felt awkward. It didn't quite come naturally, but learning to speak their body language was just as important as actually saying the right things.

"Game? What kind of game? Is it like chess but with cooler pieces, or like cards but with cooler designs? Or, um, like Monopoly?" he asked eagerly.

"Y-yeah," Laike managed after he forced himself to breath. "I'm good." As in, in good working order. As in, no heart attacks here. Not yet, anyway; he was sure one was coming eventually.

Stranger-Mc-Space-Invader who took the seat next to him sounded like he wasn't aware that Ni No Kuni was a video game, or it never occurred to him that it could be a video game. "Oh, uh, no it's not that kind of game. It's, um, I played it on the Switch, and it's actually kind of sad? Like it's about this kid who almost drowns, but his mom saves him, and then she dies of heart problems? And as he's crying, his doll comes to life and explains all this stuff about this alternate fantasy world.

"The doll says stuff like, everyone in the normal world has a soulmate in the other world, which is basically like a copy of the same person? So the game is about Oliver — that's the kid — and his adventure into the other world to save his mom's soulmate. In hopes of bringing her back.

"There's a bunch of twists in it, and it doesn't like. End super sadly. So there's that?" He finished, feeling a little awkward himself.

Peregrine frowned, brow furrowed both in confusion and concentration. He'd heard of that word, he thought.

"Switch? Sorry, can you remind me of what that is? I think I've heard of it, but..." He paused, searching for the explanation he could give. What was it he could say without saying far too much, or sounding absolutely insane? Ah, yes.

"We're not—I mean, my family—I'm not culturally aware. But this game sounds fun. I didn't know they could come with stories. That poor Oliver..."

"Ah, yeah, it's —" Laike tucked his lips to the side as he rummaged around in the bag on his lap. Out came a Switch, with a Pusheen-themed faceplate and JoyCon covers. "I don't have the game on me, but." At least he had the Switch.

His eyes widened at not culturally aware, and the next sentences corroborated that. Laike hadn't met someone who never played a video game before; he knew that most people had, at least, tried a phone game. He hadn't thought it possible to meet someone who had never played a video game ever, but here he was, having a conversation with someone that could've been having fun at Laike's expense. But the boy seemed so bashful and honest that Laike was disinclined to assume such a thing.

"So you've, uh, never played a game on your phone? Wow, um, I don't mean to be rude? But what do you do for fun?" Because Laike couldn't imagine anything else that was as fun as games.

Peregrine's eyes widened and he couldn't quite contain his squeal. "Oh, goodness, that looks adorable. What a fat cat!" he exclaimed, watching Laike turn it on.

"I, um. No, I haven't," he answered, flushing from embarrassment. "I haven't got one that can play games. But as for fun, I like to do research! I love nature."

He paused, chewing on his lip slightly. "I like learning about hibernation cycles and all that sort of thing, and why deer don't hibernate even though you'd think they would, and I love going on nature walks so I can see them and such. And also reading fictional books. Like Nancy Drew! She's a delight."

Laike stared at the stranger sitting next to him. He didn't mean to stare, and when he realized he was staring, he quickly lowered his gaze to his lap, but he couldn't erase his confusion.

Research was fun? Laike remembered it being a total drag in school. So, this guy was a nerd? And not in a gamer way? He wasn't sure he met one of those before. In fact, he thought they were a dying breed — or they went off to research institutions, only to be seen again in fast food lines or like, clogging up the study rooms at libraries. But, Laike guessed that sometimes they needed to hop on the bus to reach their workplaces, their libraries, or their greasy burger joint of choice.

"… Um. I'm sure all of that is crazy interesting." He didn't know the first thing about deer, except for how they were configured when they were roadkill.

"Didn't Nancy Drew like, investigate murders? You're not worried you're gonna get killed by a psycho when you walk in the woods? Or, uh, eaten by bears? Nature's kinda dangerous." And scary. And it was easy to get lost — Google Maps wasn't kitted out with hiking trails just yet.

"Yes! Nancy Drew is a wonderful detective. But no, reading the books never made me worry about people lurking in the woods," he said, humming in thought, "I just don't see the point in stressing myself out about such a thing. I'll more than likely be fine. As for bears, just know what you're supposed to do. There's research, after all. Bears aren't too hard to shake, if you're careful. Except for polar bears, of course. They'll actively hunt you, while other types of bears are far more inclined to leave you alone. But we don't live in the arctic, so there's no reason to worry about that, either."

He nodded at the Switch again. "Video games?" he asked a bit tentatively, wondering if he was doing something wrong. He hadn't meant to ask about them and talk all about himself and his interests. He was fascinated by the young man before him and these video games he liked so much.

"… I didn't actually know if there were bears in DC, but I guess there's bears in DC." Laike sunk down in his seat. Like he needed more to worry about when he went outside…

His attention returned to the window. They were at a bus stop on one of the busier city roads, and this one backed up against some of the fancier houses that likely faced calmer streets when they were built a hundred years ago. He couldn't spot any bears lurking in the well-manicured lawns and dumb little topiaries, but that didn't preclude them hiding in plain sight like deer often did.

Then he looked back at the stranger next to him. He realized, belatedly, that he hadn't actually told the guy his name. Which seemed rude, for a conversation that went on so long.

As amenable as the conversation was, Laike's stress rose with the length of it. He knew that saying the wrong thing was an inevitability; if Walking in the Woods with Bears got off soon, then they could end on a high note. If not… How long was it going to take for Laike to accidentally cram his foot in his mouth?

"Huh?" Forgetting himself, Laike looked down at his Switch. "Um, did you… Want to try one?"

Peregrine chuckled a bit. "Oh, no, there's no bears in DC," he reassured, "I was just reading about them recently, so the information is fresh, especially after you asked."

He hesitated a bit at the offer, looking at the device, before shaking his head just a bit, biting his lip.

"Could you play something and show me how it works?" he asked instead, "I've never... touched anything like this before, and I don't want to mess it up. Oh! By the way, I'm Peregrine."

Laike flatted his hands together and bowed his head in thanks. No bears. Crisis averted.

Or something, because there were probably youma bears.

"Uh, yeah, I think so. I have Animal Crossing loaded right now, it's. Pretty tame," he decided, though that wasn't quite the word he wanted. Maybe calm was better. No, calming? "It's about going to a deserted island, and then capitalism, and then you invite a bunch of other characters to move to your island, because capitalism, and then you get to like. Destroy the ecosystem by terraforming it.

"It's cute, and fun, and um. Sinister," he finished as he turned on the game.

"So. This is my island." He angled the Switch toward his fellow passenger. His island was a recreation of areas in Bloodborne, inasmuch as he could manage with the game's base items and some custom assets.

Peregrine blinked at the bizarre explanation, then leaned in a bit to watch the system power on and the game screen pop up.

"That sounds... Well... If you're terraforming, you must be replacing some of it, right?" he questioned, watching the character on the screen run around the island. Oh, this looked cool.

"You designed this?" he asked, then squealed a bit when a green koala started running at the human character. "Oh no, he's chasing you!"

"Yeah. Like. Hmmm… Yes and no? So the island's this um, you can pick one of four layouts, and then you get to do whatever you want to it? Oh, and that's — no, he's just trying to annoy me with a gift." Laike pressed A, paged through the hippo's nonsense, and received an ugly pair of cowboy boots for his trouble.

"They… Do that sometimes. He's an islander I invited a long time ago, and I…
cantseemtogetridofhim.

"So, um. Oh!" He steered his character toward a slope, and ran up it into a carefully cultivated garden with a fountain at the center. Maple trees framed the area, and a river lined the back of it. "Like here's stuff I made? The island didn't come with roses, so I found some, and then I bred them, and it took me like, six months or something dumb but I finally got gold roses. See?"

He tilted the Switch toward the boy, clearly proud of his pixel roses.

"Oh, he gives you gifts? That's so cool," he said, completely enraptured. This was totally wondrous to him. What cute little boots!

He gasped at the revelation of the garden, and fountain, and wow, this all looked so pretty. "You did all this?" he asked in amazement, "This looks so cool. You did awesome with it! And whoa, those roses are so pretty!!"
