Welcome to Ice Fishing! You might find that this contest isn't... quite what you'd expect. Don't worry - we're not going to be snuggled around heaters in shacks on a lake for this one. Oh no - instead, we'll be huddled around tables piled high with comfort food.

You read that right.

COMFORT FOOD.

These soquili have been a little chilled this winter, hanging out in the icy waters as they do. They're hoping you can show them a good time by introducing them to your favorite comfort food to eat (or drink) during the cold months - and maybe, if it convinces them, they'll go home with you to help you finish your dish!

How It Works
This is a judged contest with a participation raffle. To enter, please use the form below to post your entry. Please remember to include a note with your username in the picture of your entry and at least one work-in-progress pic. One winner will go home with their top preference. An honorable mention may be chosen at the discretion of the judges. The remaining prize(s) will be raffled off among the participants!

General Rules
1. Be polite and respectful.
2. Show good sportsmanship. Let's spread some good cheer!
3. Questions should be directed to Mahogany Sunset.
4. Please do not use post styles when submitting entries.
5. Please be mindful that mistakes do happen when lists are being compiled. If you see your name missed, please notify the host prior to prize rolling in order to be included in the list. If a mistake is made during rolling or during announcements of winners, please do not expect compensation to be given for the error, outside of remedying it for future rolls. It is entirely up to the colorist/staff if they choose to compensate for a goof, and compensation is an exception, not the rule.
6. Mules may not be used to increase a user's chance of winning.
7. A win from this game will count as your Freebie Soquili for December.

Game Specific Rules

2. Beverages are allowed if they are non-alcoholic.
3. Please include your username on a slip of paper (or similar) in your entry and at least one work-in-progress picture. At least one work-in-progress picture is required.
4. Sharing your recipe is optional but encouraged if you have an interest in sharing.

Entry: 2 versions of same meal because i wrecked the pitta breads for mine, so only kiddo had pittas, dog had the crumbled bits of the others lmao

Recipe:
Super simple, i use a low cal spray oil thing for the pan, fry up some beef steak with some spring onions, when the beef has all been seared, sprinkle in a beef stock cube and put on lowest heat until the meat is cooked to how you like it best (medium, fully done through, etc), can enjoy with fresh salad, vegetables, anything you want to add to it.


Why is this your favorite comfort food to make in colder times? Honestly i can't put my finger on it but it's filling, it's tasty, it's simple and can be cheap to do. It just makes me feel good to cook and eat it.

Recipe:

You Will Need:
Hot Water
Chai Tea Bag
Chocolate Creamer
Sugar (optional)

Heat water to near boiling and then steep tea bag 2-3 minutes. Longer makes it bitter. Remove tea bag and add sugar and chocolate creamer to taste. Stir and enjoy!


Why is this your favorite comfort food to make in colder times? Nothing helps warm you up inside and out on a cold day like a cup of hot chocolate chai tea. I love that it is super easy and quick to make.

Recipe:
Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe
Ingredients-
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
2 cups (12-ounce package) Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels - I generally mix the chocolate chips with other kinds (dark chocolate and milk chocolate)

Heat oven to 375° F. Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until creamy. Add eggs beating well and then add flour, baking soda, and salt. Stir in chocolate chips and then drop by rounded tablespoon onto baking sheet (I line mine with parchment paper). Bake for 9-11 minutes then cool on baking sheet for 1-2 minutes before removing to wire rack to cool completely.


Why is this your favorite comfort food to make in colder times? I enjoy baking but I prefer to do it in the colder months as it helps warms the house up. It also brings back memories of baking cookies with my parents as a child and then baking with my nephews and niece when they were younger. Nothing beats a fresh baked cookie right out of the oven with a glass of cold milk.

Recipe:
ingredients

Meat of your choosing (i chose a tomahawk steak)
Marinade (optional)
Bell peppers
Onion
Mushrooms
Garlic
Salt
Broccoli
Oil
Preheat your oven to 375°

Step 1. To marinate. Or not to marinate. That is the question.
~Marinate your meat. Or don't. It really is a personal choice. I marinated mine in Chipotle Pepper bagged grill season mix. It's my fave for meat. Feel free to spice your chunk of meat however you want.
~Dice your veggies like wolverine dices his enemies.
~chunk up your head of broccoli. Size preference is personal choice but i like little bites cause it cooks better.
~Dice your garlic. How much you use is personal preference. i like so much my eyes water. To each their own.

2. Prepare 2 big pans over med high heat. Pan 1, you will add oil and fry half of your garlic till it's as brown as you want. The darker the garlic, the darker the flavor. Much like my humor.

Remove garlic.

3. Sear your hunk of meat. All sides. It seals in flavor. If you're using a giant tomahawk steak, like i am, try to make sure it fits the pan. I did not and it was awkward. So awkward. If your not using a piece of meat that needs to be put in the oven?. To finish cooking, feel free to use the pan to cook the meat to your preference.

4. Put steak in oven to finish deading it. Cause it has to reach 145°f to be considered safe to eat in the USA. I like to not die. Cook for at least 30 min cause that tomahawk steak is HUGE.

5. While the steak is relaxing in it's own heated sauna, use the pan you seared it with (if it had char, that's ok. Char = flavor) and pour in bell peppers, onion, and the fried garlic. Cook till veggies are desired crispness. I prefer mine soft and mushy and stewed in their own essence. I also seasoned mine with a little marinade from the steak, extra salt, pepper, and a little raw garlic cause all garlic has flavor.

6. In the other pan, that has now heated,
you will add oil, the rest of the garlic and broccoli. Keep a close eye and stir broccoli occasionally. Nobody wants burnt broccoli. The smell never leaves your house. Cook till soft. Add salt as desired.

Remove both from heat once cooked. Remove steak from oven once it is at least 145°. Remember. We want to eat. Not die.

LET THE MEAT REST FOR 10 MIN. It will taste way better and retain it's juicy flavor. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP.

7. Plate and add additional toppings. I added pico de gallo and toasted some jalepenos. Add a side. Such as a salad.

8. Enjoy your hunk of meat and veggies like the caveman you are.


Why is this your favorite comfort food to make in colder times? This is, hands down, my fave comfort food ever. It's warm. And juicy. And spicy. It can really be anything you want it to be.

And the flavor combo is so good. Sometimes i add rice and make enough for everybody. (There are 8 of us.) And it makes a giant meal out of meat, veggies, and sometimes rice. You dont have to use steak either. You can use pork, chicken, hamburger meat tacos, the ingredients really are interchangeable. And nothing warms you on a cold day like capsaicin. So make it spicy. wink

Entry: Oven-baked Potato Wedges

Recipe:
Preheat oven to 425 degrees Farenheit.
Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper- make sure the sheet has a rim, or the oil can cause Problems in your oven, if you use a bit too much. ^_^;
Wash potatoes.
Cut potatoes in half.
Cut halved potatoes into wedges/slices.
Spread potato wedges on parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
Drizzle potato wedges generously with oil of choice (olive, grapeseed, vegetable, etc.).
Toss/Stir potato wedges in oil, so all wedges are lightly coated.
Season with Salt & Pepper to taste.
Toss/Stir potato wedges to more evenly spread seasoning.
Place in oven for 30 minutes at 425 degrees Farenheit.
Take baking sheet out and gently toss/stir potato wedges around the baking sheet.
Place sheet back in the oven for another 20-30 minutes.
Let cool for approximately 5-15 minutes.
Serve as is, or with some dipping sauce of choice (honey mustard aioli is particularly good in my household).
Enjoy.


Why is this your favorite comfort food to make in colder times? I like this recipe because it is so very simple and versatile- and potatoes are fairly cheap on the wallet and easy to either purchase by the bag, singly, or grow your own, if that's your thing. This recipe can be tweaked and made fancier by the simple addition of some herbs or spices as preferred. Sometimes, I'll add a tablespoon of mixed Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, & Paprika (like I did, this time).

Whenever I make this, it never lasts long. My family and I always end up gobbling up every bite, and they're so warm and delicious and depending upon how many you manage to snag for yourself, can be either a snack, a side dish, or even the whole meal (for those with smaller bellies).

This is also a super easy and fun thing to make as a family, if you have little ones running around. They can help toss the potatoes in the oil on the baking sheet, before it goes into the oven, and with any seasonings you choose to add, while the grownups handle the cutting and hot stuff. ^_^ heart

This recipe can even be used with other veggies, like carrots, zucchini, eggplant, bell peppers, etc.

Sometimes, I'll use this recipe with bell peppers and zucchini, mix some red pepper hummus and feta cheese for a spread 'sauce' and make easy 'Mediterranean Sandwiches'- which are a big hit with my family, in the summer time, when those veggies are plentiful in our garden, and we can hardly keep up with the amount of produce the garden's bringing in. rofl
