Soon. Everything they’d been learning of the humans, all the energy they’d been gathering in the source stones, all the work they’d put into the machines, it was all to culminate in a night. Tomorrow the comet’s energy would be over them, and they could harvest it to blast some insane laser into Negaspace. Chaos would be gone, and then-
He didn’t know what then. Maybe they just took their Prince and left. He didn’t know what more they got out of it than that. But once it was done, they could return home, finally. Provided they all survived, a notion that received mixed reviews from everyone involved.
Order still seemed skeptical and mistrusting of the Velencyans’ abilities. Fysarius wasn’t terribly concerned about that, but the cadets had yet to face anyone from the Negaverse. That was worrisome. It could be much worse than they expected.
But they just had to trust that the Commodore knew what he was doing and wouldn’t let them down. Should be fine, right?
It would be fine.
But just in case their practical combat skills were to be tested, Ny had agreed (or suggested, really) to practice with him. She was more proficient than he was at such things, and Fysarius wouldn’t complain about her support…

She shed her outer layer of cloth, stripping down to bare skin and dropping her top to the grass as she moved to stand in front of Fysarius. Ny quirked a little smile at him, not quite all teeth, but playful and eager. They should be nervous about the coming day, but… No. she didn’t want to be. Anxiety implied doubt, and what was there to doubt? They had much more training than anyone they could face here. Humans were exceptionally short-lived and so probably not much of a threat because of it.
It was a beautiful opportunity, one she didn’t think many of her kind had had before. But she would. There were few things Ny found herself really enjoying. Of course she liked what Fysarius liked and enjoyed it because it made him happy. Bugs and trees and genetics and such. But it wasn’t her own passion.
Ny thought she was much better at the physical aspects of their training. She could follow orders. She was smart enough, though hardly on par with other cadets in that regard.
But she enjoyed this.
She felt confident and proud and ready. And after being only as much use as a pair of arms and legs could be in terms of helping with camp and energy, Ny was ready to be worth more than that. She wanted for the people with her to know that she’d do everything she could to help and protect them.
It pleased her that Fysarius wanted the practice. She gave him a little beckoning wave with her fingers, bidding him to come closer.

Fysarius thought they knew each other very well. He would go so far as to say that there was probably no one closer to him than Ny was. He trusted her, respected her, wanted her company and companionship above all else. When she wasn’t near, he felt a spike of anxiety and loneliness at the loss-
And this when Fysarius considered himself someone who didn’t really need to enjoy other peoples’ presence.
The point was, she knew him. And as she discarded the tight top of her combat uniform to the ground, he followed the tug of the fabric dutifully with his eyes, the way each little fold twisted off of her before crumpling away. She knew him, and must have expected the dopey expression that painted his face as she readied for battle, the flush of color that radiated around his cheeks.
It was absurd! Hers was just a body not unlike any other. Tall and lean and very normal for her years and position! There was nothing to feel about it.
But he did.
And he grinned back stupidly at her beckoning. He couldn’t help the way his heart fluttered when she quirked a grin at him. Ny didn’t have to say anything. She hardly had to do anything besides look at him. When she did, Fysarius couldn’t help but think it might be unfavorable to die too early.
Hence, all of this.
If they got on with this, he could go back to the bugs and the trees and thinking about Ny while she wasn’t looking at him.
There were no weapons between them, despite knowing they’d have them during something ‘real.’ He just ran at her, made to grab for the handhold of her long hair tie and yank her to the ground.

She knew.
Ny had a little of a soft spot for that dumb boy expression and the way his golden gaze traced over her. Maybe it was uncouth and unprofessional and not exactly looked upon with favor in their emotionally repressed society, but Fysarius was cute when he was stupid, so enamored, and Ny didn’t want to discourage something she found so amusing.
A little bubble of breathy sound escaped her as she laughed at his earnest expression, but the playful lilt of her lips took on something stricter in an instant.
He ran at her, tried to grab whatever purchase he could find by reaching out. Fysarius was head and shoulders shorter than her, and much more slender. If she wasn’t careful, she could certainly snap him. Or at least hurt him more than she intended, while they were out here on this foreign world without all the commodities they were accustomed to. It wouldn’t ever be her intention to damage him, even if the scenario was supposed to be in preparation for something actually dangerous.
They weren’t even using their blades, and she hoped the first thing they did toward something really coming at them, was stab it.
She grabbed his arm as he tried to grapple with her, twisted until his knees buckled and he dipped, then swung her leg up and over him, swinging herself around him and using the momentum to drag them both to the ground.

A sharp intake of breath, followed by a high-pitched screel of sound as Ny tugged, bent, and floored them both. Fysarius knew with confidence that she would never hurt him (intentionally or otherwise), and he should have it in him to be more than a ragdoll for her to yank around, but the girl had strength and length on him in spades, and Fysarius was hardly offended by her grabbing him.
He just wished she might have been a little gentler in putting him down.
They landed on the ground, with Fysarius crashing to the grass on his side, one of Ny's legs locked around his to keep him still, and one of her hands holding his arm bent against his back. For all the good it would do to try and strike her with his arms while she was behind him, anyway. It was a poor start, winding up so easily on the ground, but that was just how it was in such close-quarters combat. She would not hurt him, and he knew she would pull the worst of her blows.
Fysarius would not. He couldn't against her. This was hardly an area of skill for him as it was for her, and if he wanted even a shred of chance at being a proper opponent to a woman like Ny, he had to commit fully to any attack he tried to make.
He locked one of his legs against hers, as if testing the likelihood of escape, waiting for her to tighten her focus there, but rather than pursue that route, he threw his head back hard until it collided with Ny's face. The second he had even an ounce of purchase to move, he did, grabbing at the grass and lurching free from her grasp as he spun back to his feet. If he was lucky, the moment would be worth more than just an escape as he kept close and kicked for her chest.

Ny didn’t even want to acknowledge the little thrill she felt as Fysarius struggled against her, muscles tightening as he prepared to shove her off of him. It’d be harder than that, though! Ny couldn’t help but think a little smugly to herself. His legs tensed, and hers did the same, as her free arm slid down to grab for his hip as another handhold to keep him still.
For all the good it did.
The back of his skull cracked into her face, and Ny yelped as she felt a bubble of heat forming in her nose. Maybe she should be mad, then. It wasn’t like she’d ever take the risk of doing something similar to him. Anyone else? Sure. But never Fysarius. Still, she only felt pride as he broke away from her. And a little shame that she’d been deceived by his ploy, but mostly just the pride and that thrill for the fight and being close to him like this. She felt an itch to retaliate in kind, rougher than she really wanted to be, but Ny tamped that down.
Instead, she twisted to her feet nearly as quick as Fysarius did, hardly deterred by the stinging of her nose. The smaller boy lashed out to kick, and she grabbed his ankle with both hands. They were both already so close to the ground, crouching from where they’d lain only moments prior. So when Ny grabbed, she lifted, pulling up as one would to fan out a tarp or a set of sheets, and then brought him crashing down with as much force.
They were both already so close to the ground, she thought again. He’d hardly gotten more than a foot of lift, but he landed solidly with a thud in the grass.

As he tended to do when caught off guard, Fysarius’ mind went blank as Ny grabbed his ankle and yanked.
He just didn’t have the reflexes and instincts she had, and at the first sign of something going poorly, his mind and body tripped over how to respond. Ny lifted him off the ground, and for a single, fleeting moment, Fysarius was airborne. Then, just as quickly, he wasn’t. A grunt ripped out of him as he landed on the grass, and in the same instant, it felt as if all the air had been yanked from his lungs, leaving him sputtering to try and suck in a breath.
He was fine. He was fine. It wasn’t like Fysarius had never had the wind knocked out of him during training before. But he still waved Ny away from him, lest she be under the impression he was going to do something about this mistreatment. He sat up, leaning forward over his knees as he gasped for air. Before he could fully recover, he spotted a red droplet amidst the bright green grass.
His golden gaze swiveled up, searching Ny’s face and immediately landing on- “Your- nose-” Fysarius choked out.
He’d made her bleed… Even if Fysarius couldn’t afford to pull his punches when facing someone more combat-adept than he was, it was still never actively his intention to hurt someone he cherished so much. Ny was bleeding... She didn’t seem to be in agony or anything, and Fysarius might even say she looked a little pleased, but he still felt a bit guilty for feeling the need to go so far against her.

Her heart gave a little flutter at his sputtering, and Ny agreeable settled back on the balls of her feet as the other Cadet flippantly gestured for her to relent. She was pleased! By enjoyed when they were able to train together, no matter how often the outcome was just this. She didn’t care that her nose was bleeding, and she felt certain that given a few minutes to recover himself, Fysarius would stop spluttering and gasping like an aquatic animal out of water.
Ny smiled at him, waving a hand to dismiss his concerns as she crawled in close, notching her side up against his and settling next to Fysarius with her arm draped around his shoulders.
They should probably train more liberally in preparation for whatever was to come. It would do them no good to be caught unawares against someone who wanted to truly damage them, and there’d definitely be no waving their opponent off, then. But she was pleased with what they’d done. If they spent hours out on the grass exhausting and hurting themselves, that would be no good for potential future battles, either.
She reached to pat his hair, as she often did when consoling him, and leaned to plant a smooch to his cheek. The sun was nearly set, now, and they were alone out in a pretty field on a warm night… Who knew when they’d be like this again, so, might as well enjoy it?
