Quote: One Foggy Night (5): As the seasons shift, the temperature changes too. It’s not uncommon for fog to roll in, sometimes from the mountains, sometimes out of nowhere. This fog is particularly thick and difficult to see through; Destiny City has issued several weather warnings and cautions being out or driving at night. It’s easy to get lost and difficult to see obstacles. Not to mention the strange, smothering sensation of dread and fear that rolls in with the fog. While there is sometimes the sensation of being watched, it worsens when the sun goes down. Some have even said they’ve caught glimpses of a tall, horned figure traveling with the fog. The news has reported that this is probably just a side effect of climate change and suspects that weather patterns should return to normal towards the end of the month.
There was some anomaly of the weather being reported by the humans' weather watchers. They weren't exactly sure what 'fog' was, but it was thick and white, and almost like the atmosphere had come down to the ground. Why the atmosphere would change so strikingly was beyond Neryn; Velencya didn't have anything like that. As such, Neryn was... curious. They wanted to investigate this odd phenomenon, but could not go out by themselves. So they went looking for another cadet to go with them.
Aeleas was out of the question. Last time she'd convinced Neryn to cut pumpkins into shapes and expressions to 'see what it was about' and Neryn had gotten covered in the liquid the pumpkin secreted. And the seeds. Just stickiness everywhere. It had taken two bathing procedures to get it out of their hair. So Neryn decided that Aeleas was no longer someone to do tasks or information gathering with.
Many other cadets were already out or had tasks to do, which lead them to Cypher's door. They knocked twice.
"Cadet Cypher, I wish to investigate this atmospheric phenomenon the humans call 'fog'. Would you be willing to join me on this endeavor?" they asked, very formal like as they did. 'Fun' was not in Neryn's vocabulary, to be sure.

Since their arrival, Cypher had limited interaction with his fellow Cadets. Could hear them talking amongst one another from time to time through the thin door that separated his room from the hallway. Twice he’d gone out with the intention of engaging with one of the Senshi or the Knights and learning what he could about them, their worlds, and if possible their powers. Suspected that the latter would require him to be willing to allow them to use their magic on him; Cy was not inclined to do so and was in part thankful that conversations had never reached that point. In fact, even with the help of his ComTech, he hadn’t been able to talk to any of them at all. Although he’d never admit it out loud, he missed Velencya and the comrades there who knew him well enough to engage in conversation. Yes, he had a tendency of taking conversations incredibly literally and was often unapologetic when he got things wrong. But for the few that accepted that of him, Cy was grateful for their understanding and actually tried to be more tactful in his approach of certain topics. As it was, he had been relaxing, scrolling through the growing database to see what the others had found out so far when he heard a knocking sound that was followed by a familiar voice Cypher rose from the chair and opened the door where raspberry-colored eyes met those of dark teal. He nodded his head and stepped aside to invite his comrade in. “Cadet Neryn,” he replied in a formal way of greeting as he actually held a fair amount of respect for them. “What can I do to assist?” The blaster that usually hung from his up had been set upon the desk when it seemed that sleep might be in his near future. However, the prospect of leaving the barrier and learning more about Earth was reason enough to stay awake a few hours longer.

"Simply come with me. Commodore Lyndin told us we are not allowed to go out individually, thus, we must go in pairs," they said, matter-a-factly. Neryn liked Cypher, in all honesty. He might have a little less tact than most - though one could argue Neryn did not have much tact in most situations either - and may take things more literally, but he was a good cadet and a loyal one. Neryn respected him. He was one of the few they actually respected now, given their time on Earth. Too many seemed like Aeleas, willing to simply forget the mission and bury their heads in the customs of these people. They had a mission here, it was a vacation.
It was one thing to be curious about the world they were temporarily on. Investigate, question, look at the sky and go 'those aren't the stars I know'. All fine in Neryn's book.
It was another to get attached to this world. It wasn't like they were going to stay. They had a home to go back to. Why did so many cadets seem to want to learn all of these things about Earth then they were just going to leave?
Neryn did not understand. They could not understand. Not really. There was much here they would never understand in the time they were here, but one thing they did understand was that this was a mission. No attachments.
(This was all a long winded way to say that Neryn appreciated Cypher.)
Neryn led them outside of the barrier and held up a hand. "We need not even go very far. The atmosphere has fallen to the ground in this damp white floating liquid, and I do not understand why the atmosphere would do this," they said, frowning at the fog that swallowed the barrier behind them. It appeared to be thicker than Neryn had anticipated, and... heavier? Was that correct descriptor? Could floating liquid feel heavy even?
They pulled out their datapad and started taking notes.

“Understood,” Cypher turned for a moment, gathering both his blaster as well as the ComTech so that he could also take readings from the nearby vicinity. He followed Neryn outside and almost instantly noted how both tangible and intangible the fog felt against his skin. Dense enough to touch but not thick enough to be able to hold onto or capture in a sampling container. Whatever data they could gather would have to be done out here. “I suspect it may have something to do with the atmospheric pressure as it relates to the cooler temperatures as it is colder out this evening as opposed to when it was still light out.” Hung in the air until mid-morning but cleared up by early afternoon only to return not long after the sun had set. “As for what affects the density of it, I’m unsure.” One thing worth measuring was the distance one could see from a given point compared to what their ComTech could pick up on. “This weather anomaly may pose a problem if it hinders depth perception.” As one who preferred fighting at a distance, it would be unwise for Cy to use his blaster when it was nigh impossible to tell who or what he might be shooting at. The last thing he wanted to do was accidentally harm a human or one of their own because they had opted out of the GPS function. “Would you care to assist me in determining the distance with which we can clearly see compared to what our technology is able to sense?” “I am also curious to know if different elevations may be impacted by this fog.” The hillside with which they had been utilizing as a base of operation was higher up than some of the city streets in Destiny City. Made him wonder if the water vapor thinned if they found someplace even higher to stand upon.

Neryn took down Cypher's thoughts as he spoke them, nodding ever so often. Hmm yes, it would make sense that the pressure of the atmosphere here would condense into this fine mist. They rubbed their fingers together slightly, taking note of the moisture that seemed to cling there. They sniffed it, then licked it. For science of course.
"... I believe this is dihydrogen monoxide, or what the humans call 'water'. Condensed into this cloud like structure..." they said, making more notes and sending some samples of the droplets that had begun to collect on the datapad for analysis. Neryn nodded at Cypher, readying their data pad for GPS tracking.
"Of course. This could be problematic if we need to defend ourselves; humans or other Cadets could be harmed in the process," they replied, "I will walk in a straight line from here in ten pace increments until you can no longer see me. Let me know over the commlink. Ready?"
They gave a nod, then strode into the fog.

“Ready,” Cypher nodded his head. He counted each step as Neryn proceeded into the fog and when his comrade stopped he spoke into the commlink, “Visibility is still normal at ten paces.” He knew that they would be able to hear him without the device but for research purposes, it was best to keep meticulous notes rather than relying on memory alone. When they got to twenty steps away he communicated, “Visibility is now reduced by ten to fifteen percent.” Not unexpected but still surprising at how rapidly Neryn’s form was beginning to fade into the foggy veil. a-disgruntled-dragon I am so sorry for the delay, I had lost the link.

Neryn was completely consumed by the floating liquid. It clung to their skin and uniform like a mist, the little bubbles of water collecting more and more droplets into larger water bubbles. Or droplets? Larger droplets seemed more correct. At twenty paces Neryn came to a stop as Cypher reported the reduced visibility. Indeed, Neryn could barely see Cypher behind them.
"This is fascinating while the area around me appears visible, such as the plant matter on the ground, barely five paces away becomes a wall of white. It's also... oddly quiet," they said, noticing even how their own voice seemed muted here in. Yet there was enough shadow through the white that sent a chill down their spine that had nothing to do with the chill in the air.
Neryn turned suddenly, pointed their blaster at.... nothing. Nothing was there, except white. No sounds, no visuals, just white and Neryn's own breathing. Not even the datapad was beeping.
"... Coming back, there's... I-- Nevermind, I am simply being paranoid. Can confirm that it will be hard to see much of anything should enemies use it move through. On the other hand, we could use this to our advantage, provided with have GPS tracking," they replied, albeit softer than they would otherwise, and glancing around suspiciously. They could have sworn there was something here, in the fog, with them, but there wasn't anything there. There couldn't be.
Right?
Shanyume No worries! I lost the ability to write, so it's all good!

Cypher’s lips pressed together in a thin line, his piercing red-colored eyes scanning the foggy veil with wary skepticism. Paranoid? Not exactly a word he’d use to describe his comrade. Cautious perhaps but very level-headed. From what he knew of Neryn, they had an analytical mind; not generally one to act on emotions as opposed to facts, much like himself. One reason why Cypher felt like the two of them got along or at the very least had a level of respect that made being in each other’s presence more tolerable. Instinctually, Cypher placed a hand on the blaster that remained in the holster clipped to his side. A quick glance down at his ComTech revealed no powered signatures in the area, or Velencians for that matter. Could have possibly been a wild animal, but he suspected it would have had to have been something big to spook Neryn. “Perhaps we can use a drone to better map out the landscape once the fog clears.” He kept the conversation on topic out of wary caution that they might not be alone out here. Best to keep them a passive observer and let them leave instead of instigating a fight where getting separated would be far too easy. "I think we should turn in, for now at least." Chill from the fog could be felt through his uniform and he didn't want to be caught outside with teeth chattering since he was not yet climatized to the weather here yet. Once Neryn had joined him, Cypher kept a wethered eye on his ComTech in case something was out there stalking them while they walked back towards the house they'd been staying in.
