Caelyna knew all but one of the leaders of this mission very well. Velyria was her sister, so of course she was familiar with the Commanders, and everyone knew Commodore Lyndin and all the work he had done to protect their people in the years their Prince had been missing.

But His Highness was exactly the problem. Caelyna believed in the mission, believed in what her sister and the Commodore and the other Commanders were telling them, but she just....didn't know Caedus himself very well. And that felt wrong, when there were so few of them here on Earth, and when it wasn't hard to imagine that Caedus felt a bit isolated from such a tight-knit group.

So she had decided that she would go find him, with a bag of sandwiches to share in hand--one of those lovely Earth food concoctions, a clever system for food delivery that placed vegetables and cheese between bread, in order to ensure that they were easily consumed. She had gotten simple, basic things for each of them, since she wasn't totally familiar with Caedus's tastes, and she didn't want to be rude.

It didn't take long to find him; he was outside the dome and seemed to be enjoying the lush greenery of the area around it.

"Caedus, sir?" Caelyna said. "I, uh. I'm Cadet Caelyna--Commander Velyria is my sister? You might already know that." She coughed, a little embarrassed. "I thought it might be nice to sit and talk, for a bit. I brought Earth food!" She held up the bag, like it was a peace offering.

Caedus was regularly doing his best, but any expert might note that the Vanguard pushed themselves to a degree he was still learning. He wasn’t as skilled as them in gathering information, or physical training, or working with their technology. He asked to help often enough, and was good at completing straight forward tasks, but there were many times when there simply wasn’t anything for him to do.

Like now.

He hadn’t really left their base, mostly because he was worried about someone having questions or needing something and coming by while he wasn’t there, so when he took time to himself to appreciate Earth it was usually within sight of the dome.

When his name was called, he glanced over his shoulder immediately and seemed ready to push himself up from where he sat cross-legged on the grass. Caelyna spoke quickly enough that he hadn’t wasted the effort and he relaxed again quickly.

“I know you,” he promised, because he had worked hard to learn everyone’s names. He knew he was an outsider but he didn’t want to highlight that by not knowing the team Lyndin had picked to come with them. “Please, come sit. You are welcome here. I am watching a caterpillar. He is very hungry,” he said, and shifted positions just slightly so she, too, could get comfortable near him and observe the fat little thing as it nibbled on a leaf.

Caelyna smiled. He greeted her so easily, so welcoming--he was so kind. She was glad that he had found his way back to them; it was good to have him among their people again.

She sat, taking care not to disturb Caedus or the caterpillar he was observing, and leaned her cheek on her hand, leaning in to take a closer look. Indeed, the little creature seemed to be quite happily chowing away on a leaf much bigger than him. The bag with sandwiches was set down between them, and with two identical vegetarian subs inside, Caelyna gestured to indicate that Caedus could take either, if he wanted.

"How interesting! Do you know much about caterpillars? Did you see them often, while you were her eon Earth, before?" She had a million questions, of course--about him, and about this beautiful, vibrant planet they found themselves on.

Caedus blinked at the food and then seemed grateful. “Oh. Did you hear my stomach making noise? I meant to get something to eat but I did not want to lose this one. Thank you,” he said, and though he picked up a sandwich he just held it close.

The caterpillar reared up, wiggling its little legs like it was searching for something, and then flopped back down on the leaf to continue devouring it.

“I saw them often, when the seasons changed. They did not like the cold but the season after was fresh and vibrant. Many little creatures were born. I lived in the forest, so I saw them often. These like to eat. Everything likes to eat,” he clarified. “Earth is a very hungry planet.”

"My sister and I both have a terrible habit of getting absorbed in things and forgetting to stop for important breaks," Caelyna said, "so we have to look after each other, and I suppose it's become something I think of now."

She took her own sandwich, and set it in her lap, still in its wrapper, but her eyes were primarily on their little wriggly friend.

"Earth seems to have the resources to be a very hungry planet," Caelyna said. "I feel as if I see food everywhere I go, when looking around the city." She looked back to Caedus. "What was it like? Seeing all that growth and change, all around you? It's hard for me to even imagine, truth be told." She looked a little embarrassed. "I still find myself getting up every morning just to see the sunrise, and watch this world come awake. I cannot imagine being here for long enough to watch things be born, and age, and change all around you."

A little smile twitched onto Caedus’ face when she asked, because he had not seen enough of it but he had loved what he had been present for.

His eyes were on the caterpillar, even as he carefully unwrapped the sandwich and took a small bite. When he chewed and swallowed, he answered, “It is wonderful, and a little scary. Things changed around me so quickly sometimes that I was afraid I was going to be left behind. It is, ah. A persistent fear, I am afraid.”

He seemed a bit embarrassed and took another bite to spare himself further explanation immediately, but it only bought him a few seconds.

“I hope you enjoy your time here. I thought this planet was a miserable rock for a long time. But then I fell in love with it. Every time I blink there is something new to experience. You are lucky to have a sister to experience it with, I think. I always wanted a big family. I know it is not practical. But I thought it would be nice to always have someone there. I thought, it would nice to never be lonely.”

Caelyna nodded, thoughtfully, leaning her cheek in her hand and keeping her eyes on the caterpillar.

"I am lucky. And this time, you have many other people to experience this planet with," she said. "Although it is not quite the same as a family, no. But perhaps...if we can find a way to restore Velenia and return home, we will all be freer to have that sort of large family?"

It was a dream, in a way; to think of having more siblings, or children of her own...Caelyna had admittedly put little thought into the prospect, but Caedus had her considering it.

"Though it sounded as if you at least made many friends, here."

“I did make friends,” Caedus agreed, although he did seem to be trying not to sound too enthusiastic about it. He knew how reserved most Velencians seemed to be, and even if he knew he could never quite capture Lyndin’s masterful control of emotions, of course he would use him as a reference for perfection. His smile was a little too revealing, his eyes were a little too expressive.

Caedus was easy to ready, even when he tried to mask it.

“I hope we can restore Velenia soon,” he continued, because he had such faith in his heart that they would find a way. It was just a matter of time. They had Lyndin, they had the Vanguard, they had Velencya working on it--and his friends on Earth.

How could they fail?

“I am not quite so young anymore. I do not know if I could have a family of my own. Or if the Council would let me. Or if anyone would want to. I do not even know if I would be good with a family! But,” he shrugged and leaned back a bit to give the caterpillar a bit of space. “It is a nice dream. If I cannot, I hope those around me can. That would make me very happy, too.”

Perhaps it was odd, but one of the things Caelyna liked about Caedus was that he was so emotive. Certainly he tried to be more like their reserved elders, but the way his mouth upturned and his eyes crinkled with real joy made it so much easier to know what he was really feeling, and know that when he spoke of his friends, and of loving this world, and of wanting to restore their own, he spoke true.

Generally, Caleyna trusted the people around her. The Vanguard was the best Velencya had to offer, after all, and their society had to be built on a degree of trust and interdependence. But still. Caedus was refreshing, even if he was a little confusing sometimes.

And she liked the vision for the future he seemed to have. It was a very hopeful one.

"That is true, there are quite a lot of 'what-ifs' when it comes to that sort of thing. And being a parent is a large responsibility. Mine were lucky to be allowed to have my sister and I, but I suppose they did such a good job with her..." She shrugged, but there was a hint of a smile on her face. "I hope...we can have the kind of world where you will get to be Uncle Caedus to very many children, someday, even if you don't have any of your own. That seems like it would be very nice, too."

At this, Caedus immediately brightened. “I would like that very much, I think. I would love to be surrounded by children. Especially if they are not mine. Not that I would be against having my own,” he insisted, despite the long list of complications behind that, “But I think I would be happier to have many children, from many different people. Because then that would mean that there are many families in blossom. And I like that idea very much.”

He was still smiling, even as he released a wistful sigh.

“Do you want a family? Or is that too personal a thing to ask? I have to relearn appropriate conversation topics. They are very open on Earth. I like that about them. They are so honest with their thoughts and feelings.”

Caelyna nodded. Truly, the future Caedus foresaw was one that would be beneficial for all their people; after all, if there were many families, that meant that there must be the resources to support those families. And Caelyna was fairly certain that was only possible if they reclaimed their home.

His question made her blink. It followed from the conversation, of course, but it was still a bit of a surprise, for her.

"I suppose it might be a bit personal? But I don't mind," she said, quickly, hoping to reassure him. "But I admit, I've only barely thought of it for myself. I think....I would like to have children, someday? But it feels like a very distant someday."

“I apologize,” he said quickly, and there was never really any questioning if Caedus’ apologies were sincere or not. His brows knit and he looked worried, but he seemed at least somewhat relieved that she hadn’t taken offense.

“A very distant someday sounds like a good plan. By then we will have Velenia back, and everyone will be thriving. I hope you find someone you are compatible with. Earth certainly romanticizes things, but I like that too. I forget how young you all are. I have spent so much time alone with my own thoughts that sometimes I find myself with strange assumptions. I am grateful you are so patient with me.”

He was grateful for a lot of things, and he hoped Earth inspired them like it had inspired him.

…He hoped they’d all have the freedom to make families of their own, and to not have to worry for resources or space.

He hoped they’d all get to be happy, and safe.

"I don't feel as if I'm being patient at all," Caelyna said, honestly. "You're quite refreshing to talk to."

Caedus was different from them, certainly. But that difference made him a wonderful addition to Velencya, if you asked her. People like Caedus, and Fae-Fae, and Daesva--the ones that didn't fit the most ideal mold of a Velencyan--they were the people that, if you asked Caelyna, had the most to offer.

And the future that Caedus dreamed of, where they had their home back, where they could all raise families...yes, Caelyna thought that sounded like a very lovely future indeed.

They just had to build it. Together.
