Art Alive (1): Destiny City tries to keep a clean, upstanding city, but sometimes you just can’t beat the taggers. Graffiti art has been popping up around the city but it seems like it’s always moving from place to the next. Literally. The art is up one day and gone the next--on a completely different wall. Some people think it’s an elaborate prank--except, sometimes, in the dark of the night, you can see the art stretching from one wall to the next. Or, maybe it’s just your eyes playing tricks on you. No one would believe you if you said you saw artwork moving, anyway.

Starlight had seen this art on the other side of town earlier this evening, he was certain of it. He’d stopped to examine it then, because he’d been impressed with how smooth the lines were, and how rich the colors were. He’d been fortunate that a Negaverse agent or a youma hadn’t shown up to attack him then because he’d become so engrossed in examining it that he’d completely forgotten to be aware of his surroundings--and he fell into the same trap as soon as he found this artwork.

Except, he’d spent so much time studying the first one, that now he was trying to find something different about this one. It looked like some creature had been painted on the wall, not anything he recognized, but--it was Halloween, and artists brought things to life that didn’t ordinarily exist. That in itself wasn’t so weird.

It’s just--this piece was so big--and he’d definitely passed by this wall earlier and was pretty sure that it was barren. Honestly, he was a little jealous that someone could finish such a large piece in such a short time period, with such precise consistency.

This looked exactly like the one across town--including the strange clawed feet that looked like someone had messed up and made them backwards.

It wasn’t a mistake an artist should have made twice, right? So it must have been deliberate?

He didn’t get it.

Once again, Starlight was completely distracted--only, this time he reached out to touch the paint and see if it was still wet.

He didn’t notice the way the tail, a good few feet above him, twitched.

Sometimes this planet...this city...sometimes it did some really strange things...and as much as Aeleas kind of was enjoying being on the Earth...the fact that the...artwork? She was pretty sure that was what it was. The plain and simple fact was that it was moving. She had been following this creepy, badly and crudely painted. The anatomy was unlike anything she had seen on this planet thus far...and...well.

The knight with the...oh...the pretty long hair was in danger.

Drawing a breath and withdrawing her dagger, Aeleas leapt off of the building she was standing on, giving a war cry that she waws rather proud of, and held the dagger out, aiming right for the wall, hoping to stab right into the bird...thing.

She almost made it! Of course...the head of the knight got in the way of her foot...and that ruined everything, and in hindsight, perhaps she shouldn’t have jumped right at him...and…

Drat.

In a last ditch effort, she threw the dagger at the wall as she tumbled to the ground, right on top of the blue and purple clad boy.

Starlight had been completely oblivious that he was in any danger, until it hit him. He’d heard a strange noise and looked up just in time for Aeleas to collide with him. He let out a startled, pained noise and tumbled to the ground with her, and he’d have been lying if he said it didn’t hurt.

Enough that he felt warmth in his eyes, even if he denied himself the opportunity to let it spill over.

“What the hell?” he asked when he tried to untangle himself from the girl and push himself up. “What are you doing?”

--Wait, why was she blue?

Aeleas swallowed, her head spinning just a little, but she managed to get to her feet, rubbing her backside in some pain. “It was moving. I have been following it for a few hours...I do not understand how.” She gestured wildly to the artwork, quickly picking up her dagger once more, sighing as she realized it hadn’t done what it was supposed to do. Yet again.

...Maybe she would ask Commodore Lyndin if she could exchange it for a blaster...perhaps that would be better for her...it wouldn't0 be as graceful though. That was a little sad.

“Do your...do artworks often move around your cities? Is this something of Earth that was not in our information, or is this yet another anomaly of this particular city?”

She looked away from the artwork to stare at the Page, hoping he would have all of the answers.

Starlight tried to process this but he just got hit so he wasn’t exactly doing his best. “What are you talking about?”

Was she not making sense or had he just hit his head so hard that words weren’t sounding right?

“Artwork isn’t supposed to move, no. But I thought I saw something like this earlier, too.”

He hurried to his feet and looked like he was on edge--she at least had something to fight with. He didn’t have anything.

Except for a headache.

“You saw it move? Or did you just see this same thing painted somewhere else? Because people can do that, just paint the same thing in different places.”

Nobody had told him about people not from Earth, but she was clearly talking like she was new here, and she definitely looked the part. He was gingerly rubbing at his head and already felt a bump growing; he didn’t seem mad at her, still just off balance and confused. Another talon on the artwork twitched, but he was so distracted looking at her that he completely missed it.

It was a really good thing she hadn’t been an enemy trying to attack him.

“It is moving! Stop looking at me and look at it! I have followed it for two hours. It thinks itself very sneaky, but in reality all of you humans are just unobservant!”

Aeleas huffed and looked sharply at the painting, her eyes narrowing, and after a moment, she jumped up, shoving her dagger into the wall, trying to pin one of the talons that was twitching again.

“I do not know if it is dangerous. But…” She scrunched her face up, gesturing to the talons. “It looks it. How do you destroy art? Is there a way?”

Her tiny dagger wouldn’t be able to keep stabbing it...it was a good little thing but…

The artwork was large.

Starlight did not understand.

"Art doesn't move," he protested, trying to make her explain--except, when she stabbed at it again, the whole thing drew away, leaving a trail of what looked like dripping blood--paint--on the wall.

Starlight recoiled in alarm and looked at his paintbrush, of which he could do nothing useful with, but he ran over and tried to stab it too. This whole thing was insane, none of this made sense, and yet--as soon as he stabbed into the inky pain, the whole thing twisted away, like it was climbing up and over the building.

"That's--that's not art. It's not supposed to do that, I don't know what that is," he said, but before he could even think to try and follow it--it was gone, again.

It was in hiding, fast and fluid, and Starlight's heart was in his chest because things like that weren't supposed to happen.

He didn't want to chase it, didn't want to find out if it was worth worrying about. "--Are you okay?" Oh, his head was pounding...

Aeleas cradled her dagger for a moment and then put it away, nodding and looking at the Page with concern. “...I am okay. Are you? I very badly miscalculated...I…” She looked away, sighing deeply. “It is a terrible side effect of...well. me. I suppose that I have poor depth perception. That is what I will call it, but I lost my hair because of it in dagger training and I kicked your head instead of reaching that artwork so there must be an issue with me.”

She sighed and reached into her portable space, drawing out a small wrapped chocolate bar, holding it out to Starlight with an apologetic smile. “My name is Aeleas! I truly did not mean to kick you in the head...I know this will not make up for it, but I hope that you will find forgiveness in your heart!”

Starlight faltered, a little overwhelmed but endeared. “It--it’s okay,” he said, but accepted the chocolate because he didn’t really know what else to do. He held it, looked at it, and then her, and then said, “My name is Starlight. Um. Thanks for the chocolate. My head hurts, so I think I’m going to go home and take some medicine. But--no hard feelings, Aeleas. It was an accident. And, um. Thank you for having my back. I don’t know if I would have noticed that it was moving. It’s...not usually like that.”

He rubbed the back of his head and looked at the wall. “...If that thing had been dangerous or out to get me, I might not have noticed until it was too late. So it was a good thing to show up. Um, I’m sorry to hear about the depth perception though. If it’s any consolation, your hair looks really cute. I wouldn't have known that was from an accident.”

He had said that her hair was cute. Perhaps the other page’s scheme had worked out correctly after all. Regardless, Aeleas felt herself beginning to grin and looked utterly delighted at the words. “Oh! Oh well thank you! I hope we meet again, Starlight! I will do my very best never to kick your head again!”

She looked so satisfied with the promise, like it was something that wasn’t obvious. But it would pave the way to friendship, she was sure! “I know you would have noticed the moving artwork if it had been going to attack you, I am just thankful that it did not! I will let you go rest your aching head, but I hope that you think of me somewhat fondly so that we can forge a friendship!”

Holding out her hand, knowing it to be a greeting instead of a farewell, Aeleas simply seemed impressed with her very firm grasp of the actions of humans.

He looked at her offered hand and took it, shaking it in his own. Hellos, goodbyes--everything felt sort of upside down right now. Either way, he understood it as a gesture of peace and goodwill, and he accepted that.”

He looked up at her and smiled. “Yeah, I appreciate that. You’ve got a really good kick.”

When he dropped her hand and took a step back, he added, “I hope you have a good night. See you later, friend!”

Oh, he needed ice, now.

But, the chocolate was good company on the way home.
