"Greetings. I have a question about your world."

Fae-Fae didn't hesitate at all. She'd been waiting for her turn to greet a visitor to their camp. Something she had seen during her trip to the "Farmers Market" with Gavaen had confused and intrigued her so much that she couldn't get it off of her mind, even with the aid of a Source Stone. So now she needed answers. As soon as possible. Whatever reason they came to visit would have to come second.

While she had a friendly demeanor, she also seemed pretty tense.

Not the most subtle of ways to fit in, that was for sure. It was lucky that she had chosen to converse with someone who was at least familiar with them even if he wasn't necessarily the most pleasant. Suffice to say that Athalia was still not entirely sold on their visitors and for that reason he had taken it upon himself to keep at least half an eye on them. He had promised he wouldn't intervene yet but if he was given a reason it was safe to assume he would act accordingly.

"Is that right?" he replied after a moment of consideration.

Clasping his hands behind his back, he came to a halt just far enough away to give both himself and her a respectable distance. She didn't seem to be particularly menacing, lacking in social graces for sure, but he couldn't judge anyone particularly harshly on that one considering his own rather rough and ready approach to life in general at this current point in time.

"And what would that be?" he asked, brow lifting as he regarded the woman and her otherwise tense stance. She hadn't entirely missed the 'friendly' mark, but she was certainly conveying 'awkward' as a secondary point...

Fae-Fae gave the senshi a nod, summoned her ComTech screen, and waved at him to come around and look. She was very animated about it, obviously quite eager for an answer. But as she pulled up the data she meant to share, she remembered the importance of being courteous, saying, "I am Fae-Fae. Pleased to make your acquaintance."

Then, she pointed to the mystery on her mind. The holographic screen was playing a short recording of a human woman holding a peculiar primitive device: it had a curvy, hollow wooden body with a hole, and a long neck fitted with strings that stretched across it. She was playing a complicated tone sequence while also using her natural voice to recite words, also on a complicated tone sequence. The two sequences from the device and the voice aligned together, in a way that was satisfying but also impossible for her to understand.

"Please explain this phenomenon," she said. The tone of her synthetic voice conveyed the desperate weariness of the confused and curious.

Oh, they had little computers on their wrists, wasn't that cute? Nevertheless he would give her the benefit of the doubt for now and glanced down at the screen. The recording she had summoned was clearly someone playing a guitar, a very basic concept that he could understand, and therein lay the question. Given the concept of what he could both see and here, he wasn't entirely sure what her question actually was.

"You are going to need to be more specific," he remarked after a moment. "Are you referring to the performance itself, the music within, the instrument or the vocals?" he asked. After a pause he glanced back at the video and the woman in it with a raise of his brow.

"...Or are you looking at explanation in relation to the woman, her clothes, or something I'm missing entirely?" he added. There were several directions this could go in and he could have been presumptuous, but he thought better of it. While Fae-fae wasn't a child she spoke in a manner that was similar to a young child attempting to understand something, but that 'something' wasn't necessarily what he thought it was.

It was better for him to be safe than sorry.

Though he did have to wonder how she wasn't entirely familiar with music as a basic concept, he knew that even in his past form they'd been fond of it in some capacity.

"And my name is Athalia," he finished, almost as an after thought.

Performance?

Instrument?

"Music" ?

Fae-Fae's eyed widened with excitement when she heard those unfamiliar words, and nodded so emphatically her shoulders and arms bobbed back and forth alongside her head. The words 'performance' and 'instrument' did translate, but the human was using it in an unfamiliar context. The others, 'music' and 'vocals,' didn't translate at all.

"Yes. That instrument. The performance," she repeated. "And the word you used between them. Can you spell it?"

A smile started to break out on her face, from relief she would get an explanation.

"Music?" Athalia shook his head, he did at least provide her with the spelling even if he remained bemused that her kind weren't necessarily familiar with something he deemed to be perfectly ordinary both now and in the past. Were they really so dull and lacking in depth that they didn't comprehend the basics? He'd known that they were a questionable species by nature of the very first introduction offering up a weapon akin to genocide but add this on top and well... The inclination to shoot giant weapons with no foresight or acknowledgement of risk certainly made a bit more sense.

"What is a performance to you, if you are aware of what both it and an instrument is?" he asked at last and released a small sigh. He might not like them but deep down the man had the ability to show a degree of compassion, particularly around the vulnerable, and at this particular point in time Fae-fae was demonstrating more vulnerable qualities than dangerous.

"The noise you're hearing is a combination of both the instrument in her hands and her voice, which we would also consider an instrument in this type of instance," he explained. "When both are combined into that harmonious sound it is something we deem pleasant. As a species we're particular fond of this type of performance, it gives us a chance to show a variety of emotions ranging from anger to absolute ecstasy," he raised a brow.

"And by extension, listening to each chord or the lyrics coming from the performer's mouth, will provide the ones watching them with the opportunity to feel the same thing and empathise..."

Fae-Fae would have explained about work performance, and scientific instruments, but her mind was so wholly occupied by Athalia's explanation that she had no choice but to let that question go for the moment. Threads of comprehension started to slowly weave together with the guidance of the senshi's words. Then it all snapped together into understanding -- so sudden and exciting that her whole body jerked and perked up.

"You are describing characteristics found in languages!"

"I suppose you could define music as a form of language, yes," Athalia raised a brow at that. Granted it would be a rather subjective language if the music came without lyrics, but it would certainly convey something and if that was what Fae-Fae defined as language then he could appreciate it to a degree.

"A subjective one, if the individual in your device chose not to speak alongside her instrument, but it would still fall under that umbrella for some," he admitted. He was still puzzled as to how they had no exposure to such things, genuinely he had assumed all civilizations had something relatable but when it came to this one... they clearly didn't have any. In a way it was quite a sad and empty world if such a thing didn't exist - did they have other means of expressing themselves instead?

"Is this the first time you've seen this?" he asked at last. "Heard it?" he clarify and then shook his head. "Or probably both, actually," he mused.

"I have heard tone sequences. They have many applications," she recalled. "But this is a novel one to me."

Nevermind that she was communicating with technology that almost sounded musical itself.

"Thank you," she smiled. It was quite satisfying to have made such a breakthrough with this senshi's help, and it showed on her face. If any of this data became a publication, she would have to give Sailor Athalia authorship on it for his contribution. "I am prepared to trade for more data. Or a sample of an instrument."

After a second of fumbling, she reached into her subspace and pulled out a small handful of crystals she had taken with her in case they could be used for bartering. They were presented to Athalia with a much more cool and calm look than she was wearing a minute ago.

Well this had certainly taken a turn for the 'serious', but Athalia was not a man who had use for trinkets. Perhaps if she had been wielding puzzles then she would have been better equipped for an actual trade... But on this occasion she could at least benefit from an otherwise benevolent response. Nothing said that it needed to be the world's best instrument, nor that the quality needed to be spectacular...she just wanted 'an instrument'.

He glanced over her shoulder towards the barrier for a brief period before smiling wryly.

"Are you allowed to leave this area, or do I need to come back with a book full of pictures so that you can pick the one you would like most?" he asked after a moment. It would, perhaps, be useful for her to pick her own so that she could 'bond' with it and there was every chance he would select the wrong one... but he also knew little of their orders or their true motivations. At least someone would be proud of him though, he was being surprisingly accommodating for those he regarded with such suspicion.

A lavender fist pressed against Fae-Fae's lips, and she hummed thoughtfully. There were multiple instrument models? The guitar would have been fine, but now she was curious about what else was out there. That was one thing about humans she was learning to find quite pleasant... they, like, the nature around them, were always creating more and more variety.

Was that what life with nature was like, on Velenia?

"I will defer to your judgment," she answered. The Cadet was truly grateful for the help. The mystery of the guitar had been haunting her brain relentlessly, and now she could put it to rest. Not to mention there was something about it that...

Something...

Something...

Fae-Fae chased her thoughts in a more appropriate direction. Remembering her diplomacy, she decided it would be worthwhile to demonstrate her respect for Earth in a way she figured a senshi would appreciate. So, she asked, "Is Sailor Earth well?"

Left for him to determine? He gave the alien a thoughtful look, if that was the case then she may end up with one of his more favoured instruments rather than one she may have desired. Nevertheless if that was what she wanted from him then he would consider the options and return with one he thought would be of interest to her. He would at the very least keep to the strings for her though, given she had originally requested information on the guitar.

"If you are certain, then I will bring you one I think you'll find interesting," he gave a small nod and half a smile.

...Her next question though, well that one took him a little by surprise.

"Sailor Earth...?" There was a pause as the senshi ruminated on this question, before he released a small sigh. "I will admit that I am not entirely sure if they have been found yet," he said at last and cleared his throat. "If they existed then it is likely we would know, perhaps then circumstances would be different and Chaos wouldn't have quite as firm a hold on this world as it does now," he conceded.

"But while Earth still breathes it means there's hope, a singular point of life in the solar system that still thrives even while other worlds struggle for breath," he pointed out. "So while Sailor Earth may not be with us now, we'll continue to fight on their behalf until they're ready to introduce themselves," he smiled warmly.

"After all, this is where we all come to be reborn regardless of if we were human or something else before; and if we let this world fall, then every other world will fall too. I don't know about you, but I would much prefer that every world has the chance to live again, even if their senshi has been asleep for a very long time - just because they aren't ready to open their eyes yet doesn't mean they aren't coming."

"So long as Metallia hasn't consumed their starseed their time will come and I think all of us want to make sure they have their time to shine."

He paused again and then gave a rather uncharacteristic wink.

"However if they are alive and I do happen to run in to Sailor Earth someday then I shall ask them your question, and better yet, do my best to introduce them to you so that you can ask for yourself." he offered. It was safe to say he didn't know if they were alive, dead or destroyed, but should the time ever come then perhaps he would be able to provide a more meaningful and direct answer!

"Would that be acceptable to you?" he asked.

Fae-Fae nodded happily in agreement, swaying from side to side. This senshi certainly had been helpful. She would be sure to give him credit in her future publications.

And now, it was time to attend to the reason he had decided to visit them. With a bashful laugh at almost forgetting, the conversation continued.
