There weren’t really that many things that Nelson felt he was good at...but planning picnics was high on the list of one of them. Thursday had come much more quickly than he had anticipated, and he spent the day getting ready, gathering all of the needed items for their snack break. There were steamed buns, berry parfaits that he had worked very hard to make look pretty, and some bottles of water, as well as two cans of bubble tea that had been on sale.

Nobody could resist a good sale, after all.

The basket was packed with care, and he was pleased that everything fit, though...that was why he had purchased this one, it fit his insulated bags, and now the buns would stay warm and the parfaits and drinks would stay cold and…

And he and his General would have a wonderful snack break, so even if he was utterly useless in their training, she would obviously like him for his food.

It was a trade off that he was mostly okay with.

Nelson made sure to be several blocks away from his house before he powered up, and then he made his way as Gismondine, his picnic bag slung across one shoulder as he neared the park, feeling oddly cheerful and hopeful that this would go well.

Cheerful enough that he put the bag down and sat on one of the swings, grinning and beginning to swing, enjoying how good the crisp air felt as it blew back his hair.

Tonight was going to be wonderful, and now all he needed was Sylvite!

Sylvite hadn't been on an actual picnic in a long time, probably since she was in elementary school and they had to bring bagged lunches to eat outside the museums on their field trips. She wasn't exactly sure how picnics worked, and she definitely didn't have a secret stash of cottagecore picnic blankets or sandwich recipes or anything. Gismodine had been really into the picnic idea, though, and so she was going to try her very best.

At least she ate snacks all the time, which meant she knew a thing or two about snacks. She even went out to buy some knew snacks Wednesday night instead of relying on breaking into her office stash and hoping she'd have enough. No. She brought a fresh pack of Oreos, and a thing of Skittles, and gummy worms, and a few different kinds of crackers in case he was more of the salty type.

For the main dish, she bought a pizza. It was cheese, in case he was a vegetarian. For some reason, Gismo gave off the vibe of the type of guy who could possibly be a vegetarian.

Hopefully he wasn't vegan, or lactose intolerant, because she had no idea what she'd do in that case.

In any case, she teleported over to the park once she was powered up and had her food all collected, only to peek over her cardboard box of pizza and to see Gismodine right there holding a perfect little basket.

Sylvite gasped. "Woah," she said. "You're prepared."

Gismondine looked up and let his heels dig into the mulch that was under the swings before jumping off, stumbling for a step or two as he made his way to his General, scooping up the picnic bag as he did. “Yeah! You said you wanted to eat snacks...that you liked snacks so...I wanted to make you happy...since you seemed sad last time.”

He met her eyes for a moment, but then looked away, almost shy, kicking a small rock on the ground. “I hope you like the things I brought. I wanted it to be special for you...as a thank you for not thinking I’m as useless as I think I am…” That...was far more morbid than he had anticipated and he looked up, shaking his head in protest already.

“I...I mean in this! As...as an officer not...not in general...I’m...I mean...I’m no...no warrior.” But he was here to try and be better. That had to count for something.

He was bringing her nice stuff just ‘cause she’d been having a bad day last time they’d talked? That was, like, the sweetest thing ever. She blinked twice, actually stunned to silence by how cute this was. Then the grin came back, even bigger, and she said, “If you’re trying to get brownie points, it’s totally working.”

Not that Sylvite was hard to impress or anything, but snacks, especially fancy picnic snacks, were probably one of the fastest ways to get her happy. Just being around nice people helped a bunch, too. She practically skipped the last few steps over to the playground, plopping down on the little curb where the rubber mulch met the grass. “I brought pizza! Not in fancy packaging or anything, but, y’know.” She put the box down and patted the ground on the other side of her. “It’s still good.”

She looked over her shoulder at him. “And yeah, definitely not useless, but also?” She sucked her cheeks in, trying to think about how to word stuff. “You’re just getting started, yeah? There’s no pressure to be, like, this perfect soldier right away. You can take time to learn. That’s why we’re here, yeah?”

He was so nervous, and she didn’t want him thinking he was gonna disappoint her.

Gismondine took the spot next to Sylvite, staring to glow a little under the praise she was giving her. If he were a puppy, his tail would have been wagging hard enough to move his whole body, that was for sure. “Yeah...You’re right! I’m going to be strong, I want you to look good. And to keep you safe. And me safe, and Xander…” His eyes sparkled. “I love pizza! We’re going to have a whole feast!”

Good, this was good. It would be a good reward for his training...and maybe the food would cheer Sylvite up after he proved to be utterly abysmal. “What...what did you want to teach me today…? I...I must confess...I’m a...a little excited to learn. You seem so...collected and put together…”

He swallowed and plucked a blade of grass, sighing. “...I want to be like that…”

Put together?

Sylvite couldn't help giggling at that, and she laughed for a good couple seconds. Like, it was also a super sweet compliment and like nothing anyone had ever said to her before, but also? It kinda just wasn't accurate.

"Gismo, just so you know, I'm, uh," she paused and shook her head, "I'm totally the Negaverse's kawaii little weirdo. If you look at the other Generals, they're like, way more elegant and put together. But." The giggles faded into more of a normal smile. "I still try my best to be a good soldier, and I'm still gonna do my best to be a good General for you."

Since he liked pizza, she was apparently doing okay so far.

"I figured we could start with some combat stuff since the goal here is not getting strangled? Hand to hand first, we can work the weapons in later." Glancing at the food between them, she gave a dramatic little sigh and then bounced to her feet. "So yeah, we probably shouldn't eat until after."

Stepping a little bit away from the playground, she asked, "Is there anything you know already?"

“Yeah! I think that sounds...good. I um…” He swallowed. “I know how to roughhouse...a..um...a little. But nothing that could be...beneficial.” Gismondine hesitated and curled his hands into fists. “I...I signed up for a boxing class...so I’ll learn how to punch without breaking myself too badly…” He had no doubt that he would break himself a little… but...still.

“What did you have in mind to...teach me? I have...I mean...I’ve done one class and I’m getting better at hitting the same spot, but I need to get more strength behind it…”

If he could work on strength, he might really be a force to be reckoned with. Even with his butter knife and fork...if he had enough strength behind them...maybe he could hurt his enemy before they snapped…

It was a wonderful idea. “The...goal is absolutely not to get strangled…and...and to protect you!”

“Oooh, a boxing class is a really good idea,” she said. Maybe she would’ve got better at fighting faster if she’d done something like that. Maybe she should go now. She still didn’t know official fighting techniques, just whatever she’d learned in spars and on the fly when she’d gotten attacked.

He was smart.

“Why don’t you show me what you learned in the class, then? Your reflexes and stuff will be a little bit different since you’re powered up, so it’ll be good to practice this way.”

Sylvite bounced forwards and then away, her fists held loosely in front of her face.

“See if you can get a hit on me, yeah?”

Then they could go over his posture and everything.

Gismondine nodded and drew in a breath, drawing his fists up. “O-okay…” He was so afraid of hurting her accidentally...of hurting her and making it so she no longer wanted to be his general...no longer wanted to be his friend.

The lieutenant drew in another breath and his arm flashed out, aiming a punch right for her shoulder.

...It was easier to pretend that she was the punching bag in the gym...that she was just a black and pink version of the punching bag, and it was strange, when he did that he could almost hear the instructor's voice. “Again.”

And he sent his other fist at her other shoulder, just as he had done in practice.

Even when he was putting his fists up, Gismodine had those big, scared puppy-dog eyes that made Sylvite wonder how long it was going to take for him to actually try punching her. She waited, going quiet and settling into her own stance. She watched him.

Something changed in his face, and a second later he was coming after her.

She jumped backwards out of the path of a swinging fist once, and then sort of ducked sideways away from the second punch.

"Okay," she said, glancing from his feet to his hands. "Okay. Your form seems pretty good." At least, there was nothing glaringly, obviously bad about that. "You just gotta be determined, yeah? I know it's hard, getting used to the fighting stuff, but if you don't hit first and hit hard, the bad guys can be all like-"

Slowly, giving him lots of time to do something to stop her, she reached for his throat.

When the hand started moving towards his throat, Gismondine snapped. For a moment, there was a stark fear in his eyes, and the next moment, he had gone feral. Or at least, that was what seemed to happen.

He let loose another punch, and then another, his eyes wild. “No. No, no no no…No!” The anger was warring with fear in his normally docile eyes, and he shook his head. “You’re not going to do that. I’m not…going to…”

Lashing out with his foot too, he tried to kick her, body beginning to tremble as the adrenaline began to fade. This wasn’t someone who actually wanted to kill him…this was Sylvite…this was his friend. His general.

Gismondine finally gave a whimper and stepped backwards, crouching on the ground. “...Not again…”

Just the look in Gismo's eyes was a total punch to the gut.

Then, he actually punched her.

Sylvite didn't try to dodge. She didn't do much of anything other than mutter "Sorry," while his fist was coming towards her, and then gasping because ow.

She deserved it, yeah, but it still hurt. So did the second hit, and the kick.

"Sorry," she said again, stumbling backwards, but she glanced back up to look him in the eyes. "But that's what you do if anyone ever tries to hurt you, yeah?"

Sylvite took a shaky breath and uncurled her fists. Even if she felt pretty bad about it all, it was good to know that he could defend himself if he had to.

"That's enough for now though," she said, quieter. "Let's uh. Let's get the snacks."

Gismondine was trembling when she began talking, the anger and adrenaline draining out of him like a leak in a water balloon. “I…Sylvite…I’m so sorry…I…I didn’t…”

His teeth began chattering and he shuddered slightly. “I…didn’t mean to…to hurt you…I…” Yes…food. Food sounded good. Food…was good…

The lieutenant moved to where they had set up the little picnic and slumped slightly. “...I really…I mean…I won’t let anyone…I don’t want to be hurt again…I’m so sorry for hurting you…I didn’t mean to…” And he hadn’t wanted to. He hadn’t wanted to hurt anyone…but. Even more so, he didn’t want to be hurt. Perhaps she was right…Perhaps this could help him if and when he got attacked again.

“...yeah…Let’s get our snacks. Food is good…and we should do this again sometime.”

"I'm okay," said Sylvite, trying really hard to take deep breaths to fill up her lungs again without it seeming like she was having to fill up her lungs again. She wheezed a little bit despite her best efforts. "I'm fine. You did really good!"

Even if she'd really been trying to strangle him, she didn't think it would've worked with how he fought back, so that was definitely a step in the right direction.

Although, she was mostly still thinking about the way his eyes had looked when she moved at him like that. It made her feel like a real jerk.

She sat down cross-legged next to where they'd set up the food and stuffed an oreo in her mouth before she had a chance to think too much about it.

"Wanna tell me about what you brought? Or take some candy?"

Candy could make anything better, even this.

Gismondine gave a small, brittle smile, but nodded. “Th-thank you…I want to try my best for you…for everyone…I just…”

He wanted to be better. Obviously. He had to. To keep himself safe..and Sylvite He wanted to keep her safe so badly. …Even if it was from his own outbursts as had just happened.

“Candy sounds…really good to me…Candy is always good…ah…help yourself to whatever…whatever you’d like from what I brought…it’s all…all very highly rated ah…” He reached out and grabbed one of the buns from the insulated bag, taking a bite and relaxing slightly as the warmth and taste filled him. “Thank you for wanting to help me…it really does mean the world…um…”

Gismondine hesitated slightly and after taking a moment to make sure there were no other powered signatures around before he powered down back into Nelson and seemed to just melt. “...But maybe…we could just eat now…and um…discuss everything…next time?”
