Aeleas had been ever so excited to come to Earth. To be chosen for this mission, to be one of the few new Cadets who the Commodore had picked to help him. They were actually here...but she was rather miserable.

Truth be told, she wasn’t quite sure why she had been chosen. Sure she had worked super hard, and done all she could to rise high enough to be picked, but her confidence was all but shattered after that incident with the dagger that had caused the large chunk of her hair to fall to the floor in a lightly smoking heap.

It had been the worst possible thing to ever happen. Ever.

And now that they were here...Aeleas had moped. For several days she had moped. Staying in her rooms, simply willing her hair to regrow, but...it hadn’t.

She had hoped that perhaps the atmosphere of the planet would assist in the growth but...it seemed that she would have to take things into her own hands, and with a determined look, the Cadet left the camp just after sunset, armed with a bowl, and her dagger. She was going to go out into the wilderness and find the right things to get her hair to grow out, so that she could once more be the Cadet that she knew she was. Not the clumsy girl who had made an utter fool of herself.

The trees and vegetation that was near the Vanguard camp was...rather wonderful.

Aeleas walked around it with a pleased and wonder filled expression, and then got to work, cutting up some leaves with her dagger, peeling the bark from some sticks. She found some berries on a bush and gasped in excitement when they yielded so much juice at her touch, and that was put into her bowl as well. She added some water, and then a handful of dirt, mixing it with one of the shaved sticks.

She remembered to remove the elastic bands holding her pigtails, and then, taking a handful of her ‘growth serum’, she put it right onto her head, humming as she tried to massage it into her scalp.

Everything grew on the earth, so why wouldn’t the earth let her hair grow too?

Læraðr didn't really know what he was doing in the forest, powered up like he was. He'd just... felt like taking a walk and clearing his head after losing someone in a battle to Chaos and hadn't bothered to power down. Maybe that was dumb to do—being powered was basically a shining beacon saying "Order fella over here!"—but he couldn't bring himself to care right now.

Then he heard humming and he sucked in a breath, lowering himself and cautiously moving towards the sound, just to see who was there.

Oh. One of the aliens. Okay. But... what the ******** was she doing? Stifling a laugh, he straightened up and stepped forward.

"Hey, uh, Cadet. What, uh... Whatcha doing to your hair, there? What is that mess of stuff in the bowl?"

Please, God, don't tell me she put any s**t in that bowl.

The voice startled her, as Aeleas had been far too focused on massaging the concoction into her hair, and had been trying to pull it, as though by doing so would cause the growth to activate.

With wide eyes, she looked up at the blue clad...human. Page? They were pages. She was sure that that was maybe what this guy was, and giving one last, fruitless tug on her hair, she stood up quickly. “I’m. Working to make it grow. Everything grows so quickly and so large on your planet. There was a training accident and my hair…”

Aeleas looked away and shrugged. “I was trying to get it and my honor to return. If my hair grows back, nobody will know that I messed up on my dagger formations. I was chosen for this mission and before we even arrived, I messed up!”

She was pretty much wailing by the end of the rant, and had begun to tug on her hair again, hoping with everything in her that it would just work.

“...Is this not the correct formula? I had hoped living things would help. The plant life is all alive, and from what I understand your soil has former living organisms that help to make it up.” Her pale green eyes landed on his hair and she gave a wistful sigh. “How did you get yours so...so…” The cadet struggled for a moment and then seemed to light up.

Luscious?”

Oh. My. God. Læraðr swallowed back a burst of laughter by taking a deep breath, reminding himself that the Valencians lived on a synthetic planet and never dealt with much that was alive before. As funny as this was, it wasn't her fault she was so completely ignorant of how things worked.

"Okay, well, first of all, no. Just... no. That's not how it works at all," he said, "Also, I'd advise you getting all of that out of your hair as soon as possible. I have no idea what you put in it, but there could potentially be poison in it, so... There should be a river nearby where you can get all that out and wash out that bowl so you can use it for other stuff. Once you're cleaned up, I'll power down and we can go shopping for the... the refined stuff. Humans have lived here long enough to figure out the exact formulas from our plants and things to make bottles upon bottles of the different kinds of things to use to do different things to your body. Like keeping your skin moisturized so it doesn't develop eczema and your hair nourished so it can grow, and all that. It still takes time, though."

He gave her a warning look. "We don't have miracle cures to make it happen overnight, or even over a week. It takes time and daily treatments."

Aeleas looked at the page as though he had just told her that she was no longer being chosen for this most important of missions, and her lower lip began to quiver just slightly.

“So...I will not get it back in time to fix my blunder...and the Commodore will be so disappointed in me...will remain disappointed…” It wasn’t the news she had wanted to hear, wasn’t the news she would have ever wanted to hear, and with a long suffering sigh, the cadet ran a hand across her eyes to clear them of the gathering moisture only to smear the concoction all over her face instead.

“I...oh dear.”

Just how were these...how was anyone going to ever think she was any kinds of competent now?

“You can assist me in finding something that will help...with time? There truly is nothing on this wondrous planet that can just...fix my mistakes?” For she made so many, clearly. “...This stings my eyes.”

Perhaps it was the bark..

Læraðr frowned, stepping forward and squeezing her shoulder in a show of support.

"Just say you wanted to try a new haircut," he suggested, "Actually—hey, I bet I could make it look cute instead of messy and jagged. My sister, well, one of them, she's taught me a few things so I could maintain my own hair without needing to go to a professional who might not have my best interests at heart. I could give you a really nice Earth 'do! And you can just... skirt around the truth by jumping straight to the end. I offered to give you a nice Earth haircut."

He grinned toothily. "That sound good?"

Aeleas chewed on her bottom lip in the most undignified way, and wiped her eyes again, trying to get more of the concoction out of them, and slowly nodded. “That does sound good. You could make it look less all over the place? You will not make me look like a fool?”

She felt enough of a fool already, and was clearly a disgrace to the Vanguard. But...what was a little more hair lost, right?

It was making a good relationship with one of the people on this planet, and he seemed willing to help.

“Allow me to wash this off of my face and head...and then we can plan this...haircut. But...I do not want it to be too short.” Her eyes took in the Page’s hair and she gave a sigh. “Mine was longer than yours. It was lovely. You will take me to find human products to assist in its growth?”

Or was the haircut to be the only help...not that she would be upset with either answer...not really.

Læraðr nodded. "Of course. I'll give you a little trim, even up the sides and top... I won't make it but the smallest amount of shorter that I can manage," he promised, "And... Hmm, I think I need to do the cut first with some basic products so I can get a feel for your hair before we go shopping for the stuff for it. I prefer doing the cut with the products you need all at once, but I have no idea what your hair truly needs until I can get my hands on it without anything."

He shook his head. "Sorry for rambling. Let's get you taken care of, okay? I promise, everything will be fine. It might take a while to grow back, but I'll help."

Aeleas nodded eagerly and gave a small, almost shy smile. “All right! Well...if it helps that is all I can truly ask for!” She stood up, rubbing at her eyes again, this time using her sleeve instead of her hand, pleased that it didn’t cause any more of the muck to get into her eyes.

“You don’t seem to be rambling to me, I appreciate the help.” And she would appreciate it more if it helped her hair grow back more quickly. That would be the greatest joy to her.

Walking a little deeper into the woods, Aeleas didn’t say anything else to her new friend and...stylist?, but found her way to the small stream that he had mentioned, kneeling and working hard to rid her hair of the mud, and her face as well.

...It felt much better without all of the gunk on her head, and she sighed, shaking some of the water off like a dog and got up, making her way back to the page. “I am ready for your assistance now. Though I will confess I am deeply disappointed by the fact that Earth is not as amazing as I had come to believe. But. If it is time that is needed...I will simply have to wait.”

Impatiently, but...what could you do?
