“I notice that the Surrounding you’ve got around this place is a little beat up.”
Jada couldn’t stop thinking about it. Almadel, talking to her with such nonchalance about the Surrounding being beat up, missing pieces, with structural instabilities. She felt stupid, to be harping on the idea, but the thought of something coming to Earth from Out There was haunting her. There was too much that had happened over the years already for her to be comfortable with the thought of simply leaving it alone for another generation to deal with. If they would even have that long. Any crack could be made larger with only a slight big of pressure. More than, some of the Zodiac Court had been her friends. Some she would still consider such, even if it had been years since she had last seen them, and even if their last meeting hadn’t been on the best of terms.
She knew the Surrounding wasn't in great shape. She hadn't realized there was something out there that might take advantage of it.
“I don’t know if there’s anyone even out there maintaining it. I didn’t try to stop, it didn’t really look safe. There’s gaps, you know. Big pieces missing. I think it’s still doing its job, it’s just. There really are a lot of structural instabilities, I think. All the Senshi that are here on Earth, you don’t have one that knows how to patch that place up?”
Hope for an easy solution had led Scylla to ask the Merchant if he had anything that could help. Knowledge, or a way to contact someone who might have such knowledge; there, however, she had been stymied. No fault of the merchant’s, she supposed; it was like asking an antiques salesman about how their products had first been crafted- they could appreciate the beauty, but chances of them knowing details about the techniques that went into crafting a specific item would be… unusual. Useful, of course, but unlikely. And with as squirrely as the man- well, the alien- seemed to be, and had been, it had been pretty useful as far as information went.
“I’ve heard rumors of the Surrounding, but you’d be hard pressed to find any actual account from someone who wasn’t directly involved in making it, I think.”
“It’s old, ancient magic.”
Old, ancient magic wasn’t much of a clue to go on; when the Moon Window had opened between July 23rd and July 25th she had gone and wandered the massive library, but there simply was no understanding what was buried in the books. The most that she had been able to accomplish was looking through so many books her head had ached- and found a few picture books that meant nothing to her. And yet here she was again, with that large golden book from Celsus in her hand, as though she thought maybe holding something that had been given to her by a Knight of Chronos would help her.
(Were that true, her Surrounding Passport would have worked, last time. It would have, surely, guided her to just the book she needed, with step by step instructions and pictures, conveniently written in 20th century English, that would have let her see information that could have maybe helped.)
“ Maybe there is a way to make something like that around Earth? To push the Chaos off of it?”
Maybe Caedus had the right idea about it after all. Was trying to repair the Surrounding the way to go? Surely it hadn’t been created with just the right amount of space? That would insinuate that there was a limit to how many Chronos knights could be awakened at a time. The senshi themselves, yes, but…
One Princess. A Prince, possibly? Four Seasons. Twelve Zodiacs (Or did the Gemini duo make thirteen?). Were there only 36 knights, Were there 39? Did the Prince count as something to help with additional knights? Did Zue? Was there a way that they could have further added on to the Surrounding as time went by? But to create something like that around the earth might not be feasible. There was no Sailor Earth… was there? The Parallels had a Sailor Gaia, and she had gone to the Dark Mirror with the others of her Court. But if there was a Gaia, there had to be an Earth. Would they need to find that kind of senshi, to center a new version of the Surrounding on?
The Surrounding mostly seemed to have been just a…. shiny road, essentially… but it had been strong enough to protect them for so long… Did the Surrounding even have a library? Possibly, but chances she could get in them? The outposts were all still protected, and wandering around was just… rude.
“I think if you put your mind to it, you can do anything.” Had he even meant to be that reassuring, when they spoke earlier? Probably. It had worked. Jada had always been book clever. Researching it, remembering it, quoting it, piecing together one reference with another. She just needed a direction to go in. A way to translate these books, perhaps?
Scylla pored over book after book, wishing that she had enjoyed a little more tea at the party earlier; the extra energy would be fantastic. Occasional, unreadable notes were sketched down in the large golden book from Celsus, poorly mimicking things she couldn’t understand and had no idea if they would be useful. And, all too soon, she was draping over the desk with shoulders taught and sore.
“Blehhhhhhhhhhh.” Scylla’s groan filled the otherwise empty library. “I don’t even know what I’m looking FOR.” And if she didn’t know that, how could she know when she found it? Story of her life, really.
Yet still she sought. Sometimes it felt pointless, but people had always said if you didn’t seek, you couldn’t find. But when she wasn’t even sure if she was in the right place…
Danger within, danger without, and she felt… helpless. If all she could do right now was stalk a library and hope that there was something that could be used to at least push back one part of the danger for a little longer…Then she would keep looking.
She had to.
