We have an appointment at La Florentine Gallery. 3pm on Friday. Be read to impress.

It was a simple message that might have come off more like an order but with Mathias, sometimes it took orders. Very direct orders that left little room to counter them. Given that he was supposed to be in the ring tomorrow and could be left with a black eye or broken nose, Delilah had made a point to convince Gallery Director Justine LaMoine that meeting today was in her best interest. That meant making sure the man of the hour showed up, on time, and with the mindset that he needed to act the part.

So at ten to two, Delilah’s heels clicked her into the front door of the white stone building and across it’s very white and polished marble floors. The front lobby was, for lack of better words, massive. Winds lit up the front of the room but you would never know where the natural light stopped and the artificial began. Pieces displayed in this room where typically of sculpture nature or works that needed nearly three stories to display.

Today it appeared they had recently taken on the works of an artist going through a ‘red phase’ if Delilah had been asked. It looked a touch like a murder scene in her mind but she was not the artistic blood in the family.

More like she was the checkbook.

The text had been explicit in detail and implicit in directions. So what time he'd had between getting situated and ring ready was spent reading up on the gallery in question - layout, features, current artists. He'd of hoped for a better window but since the next day he was going to be potentially walking away from his fight like he'd walked into a door - he saw the merit in the meeting now rather than after - when people would wonder if he was physically okay.

So no less than five minutes after his cousin he arrived, dressed to impress - cutting a better line in his suit than usual since he was currently in the process of cutting to make weight for his fight tomorrow. He was as sharp and clean as anyone was going to see him.

The excess of red in one of the main displays had him of an interesting mind. Red was the color of passion after all - but to him the works spoke more of an excess and an excuse to slater as much of the stuff around as possible - regardless - he wasn't going to voice an opinion on the stuff unless he was asked directly.

Early was good - He knew she'd beat him here easy - so as he approached where she stood taking in the art of the main lobby.

"All present and accounted for," He said as he reached her. "Any last minute information I need to know - or did my extensive read up of the place fill me in with enough?"

Glancing up from her phone as she heard the approaching footsteps, Delilah found her smile easily growing. She'd been reading an email while waiting for him over on one of the white leather benches sat out. Seems her tip to the Visit Mayet director had paid off and the initial meeting had been a success.

Now she could focus on the next problem child.

"I'm sure you covered the public information from top to bottom." Delilah offered, uncrossing her legs and standing up to offer him a hug. She could tell from the way the suit fit him that he was in the middle of cutting weight but the hug confirmed it. It was the worst part of the gig but some people lived for it.

Glancing over to the receptionist, she offered a nod to the woman behind the white marble counter to buzz in their host.

"Not for the more under wraps bit. Justine and Dad are old friends. They went to elementary school together until Grandma had dad transferred to a boarding school in Europe. And before you go assuming anything, Justine is gay. She did have the hots for Mom at one time." Delilah mused, brushing a loose hair behind her ear.

"There is no money being directed this way from the family. Justine wouldn't accept it. What she does accept is hard, honest work. She knows who you are and your reputation but she's willing to give you a shot because I am who asked." A flash of warning passed through those red eyes into his face. "But the rest is up to you. If today you two don't hit it off, then we all walk away, no hard feelings. It's as much an interview for you as it is for her."

No pressure - and on a day when his mood was going to be edgy just due to the nature of the beast that was his diet at the moment and running literally only enough water to keep him alive.

He took a deep breath and nodded. The extra information was helpful. The fact that their host was of a certain persuasion meant he could leave the awkward half-flirtation at the door.

"Got it," he said with a nod. "Good to know that we all have an exit clause built in. But, we'll see how things go. We both know I'm not allergic to working hard."

If anything - he worked harder than he should at times - but that was beside the point.

So here was hoping he didn't nuke things from orbit.

"No." Delilah countered as she let her eyes drift over to a panel in the wall that opened into a door. "You are just allergic to authority and rules."

With those words, she nodded towards the woman walking towards them. It was hard to put Director Justine LaMoine into words at first glance. Cold, closed off, and firm would be the first impression one got. Her long brown hair was pulled into a tight bun that sat low on her head. Square glasses rested on a nose that was a bit squat but still made her face look narrow. She stood just shy of 6ft in blue suede lofters with a bright gold buckle of the Gallery's logo in place of the standard one. Dark grey ress pants and a blazer clearly taken from the men's department and yet tailored for her paired with her blue oversize earrings.

She was interesting but she smiled when she saw Delilah. There was no warm greeting, no friendly hug, but the look shared between the pair was clear there was a soft sort of affection there.

"Ah Dee!" She beamed a bit, coming up to them both. "How good to see you, though I wish you would have given me more notice." Dark eyes moved over to Mathias as she put her hands on her hips. "So this is the famous street artist I hear about?"

There were a handful of times that Mathias had ever met someone that made him feel like he was in over his head and completely out of his element. Meeting the director was very swiftly appended to the end of that list. Justine LaMoine was one of those people who exuded their personality in a way that made it clear that they put up with little and less when it came to bullshit.

Mathias gave her a polite bow, not quite sweeping but one arm stayed behind his back as the other dipped with his upper torso not quite a full 45 degrees. No handshake was offered - she didn't seem the type for physical interaction - and he hoped that the bow would suffice.

"If you'll allow me a moment of humility," He said with a dry chuckle. "Not sure if famous would be the word used. Infamous perhaps - depending on who you asked."

He bowed his head all the same in affirmation to her statement. "That said - Street art is my preferred and favorite medium," He admitted. "Oil is a narrow second - but there's something very... unique - in the way aerosol works on stone."

Reading someone correctly was one thing. Reacting correctly was another.

At Mathias' 'bow' to her, Justine shot Delilah a look only to see the young White heirs closing her eyes as if she was trying not to smack the man upside the head. That drew a smile from the director as she nodded towards them both.

"I see not why you give Dee here such a headache. You have a style about you all your own, and I don't just mean in art." Turning without a word, she began to walk into the gallery.

Delilah caught Mathias' eye and jerked her own, signalling him to follow.

"Formal education or just practical experience?"

He followed, realizing that he'd broken the ice - but on an awkward footing. Mathias had never been good in these kinds of situations - as Delilah had pointed out, authority and following it was not natural to him - barring a handful of people, who had earned his respect.

"Thank you," He said, not sure if it was a compliment or not - but it felt wrong to not address the statement. "I'd say it was cultivated - but, I'm sure Delilah has told you I'm - as they say - an odd duck."

"As to that... Both," Mathias offered. "I have a B.A. in Fine Art, but I was doing street art well before then. I will say though that it was during my formal education is when I discovered my love of oil on canvas - but spray-paint on stone was my first love."

"Hm." Justine muttered, listening as Mathias spoke, finding the way he filled the silence rather interesting. His answers were rather predictable and repetitive. Using both hands to push open the double doors, she walked them into the gallery proper.

When the doors shut behind them, the room was dimly lit. The lights only on enough to make out partitions and half walls scattered around with piles of something else under white sheets to the sides.

"Well then, Mathias, let me see how trained your eye might be." Justine's hand shot out and pressed a panel on the wall, the lights coming up full blast.

This gallery was empty. Bare white walls, empty halls. It almost echoed.

"This exhibit opens in a few hours." She mused, turning around and motioning to the piles to the side. "We will leave you to it."

Nodding at Delilah, she had the girl walk with her.

Delilah, for her own part, was surprised as she glanced at Mathias.

"The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and the Lord tests hearts," Mathias breathed - mostly to himself. Trial by fire. Sink or swim. Jump in with both feet on a day that he was not on his best. He knew it - Delilah knew it. Justine might have guessed it from how he spoke or how he moved or acted. But in either event, he looked around the room, nodding to himself.

He met Delilah's gaze and gave her an easy "I've got this" smile. It was a smile she would be all too familiar - usually when he knew he was in over his head but was going to wade in up to his neck anyway because someone had double-dog-dared him to try.

"I'll do my best, ma'am," He said, giving the director a three-finger boy scout style salute before moving over to one of the sheets, pulling them aside to see what he was working with.

And weather he was going to need to hang his jacket somewhere while he did this whole thing.

Under the sheets stacks of canvas covered in various media with one common trait: All of it red. Some were painted, others appeared to have things attached. Some looked like they had just painted the canvas red and called it done.

Very little seemed to ever match.

Delilah watched him for a moment before realizing that staying around would defeat the purpose. Even if she was to help him, right then, Justine wanted to see what he did. So she followed the woman into a back room, up the stairs, and into the observation deck. From the one way glass, the staff could over see everything going on in the gallery below.

"I suppose you think me cruel?" Justine cocked a brow, glancing back at Delilah as she closed the door behind her. She stood in front of the glass panels, watching the man below. "Or crazy."

"Unusual." Delilah answered, walked to join her. "I know you have a method to your maddness but to have him set up an entire show in three hours? He knows nothing about the artist."

"And your point?" Justine turned it back on her, a look in her eye that made Delilah jerk back slightly. she was taken aback by the bluntness but not so much that it came off rude. "I've seen his type countless times. He's got talent, that much I'm sure, but he also has an ego and thinks he is better than everyone else." Those words alone made Delilah close her eyes.

Of course she'd seen the nightmare that happened at the hospital.

"So, he's got to put his money where his mouth is and prove that if this is what HE wants, not you, then he can do whatever it takes."

"St. Luke, if you could do me a solid, an intercession would be great right now," Mathias said to himself as he looked over the grab-bag of art that lay under the sheets. Justine had marked him well - he was a very proud individual - and more than once he'd been hoisted on his own petard. The hospital had been a major blow to him though - especially now that he knew just how much of an a** he had looked.

It had made him eat the crow while it was still young and tender - still unappetizing but better than it being old and tough.

The jacket came off immediately. He hung it over the nearest surface that was available and clean, before unbuttoning and rolling up his sleeves. He had a handful of hours - art by an unknown artist whom he personally did not find appealing - and he could feel the eyes upon him, so he knew he was being watched. He didn't bother to look for a CC-TV camera or a nook somewhere. His hairs stood on the back of his neck and that was enough to know.

No Pressure. An interview for him as much as her. Simple, easy.

He paused, taking a deep breath and closing his eyes for a moment.

"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you," He breathed out, letting go of all his anger, frustration, anxiety, and fear that had built up over the morning and early afternoon.

He had been given a task - a mission - a duty - something that had to be finished in a finite amount of time - to the satisfaction of the person who had asked him to do it. He didn't have to like the art to start to see the idea behind it. Abstract as it was. While his abstractions tended to be more grounded in reality and less - completely out there - but at the end of the day - abstraction was one of those more cleaved to forms of modern art that he... found very little interest in professionally.

Those watching above would see a marked change in posture at this point. What had before been a relaxed, casual, even slightly agitated stance became something more firmly rooted and determined. Where before he had been a man ready to shift through useless trite in the hopes of finding something decent, now stood someone willing to put the pieces of the puzzle together - even if it took him the whole three hours to do so.

And so he started, picking up a piece and hanging it on the wall, not in what he personally felt was most appealing - but what he felt gave him the most visceral and... gut feeling... of what felt like the artist's intent. Each new piece was compared and cataloged in his hand, and more than a few times he moved a piece from one place to another - altering the feel and flow of the exhibit until finally, after a solid two-and-a-half hours, he carefully folded up the sheets, ensured that there were no last minute pieces he had missed. He rolled down his sleeves, slipped back on his jacket, and stood in the center of the room to take in the full gallery. It spoke of passion - of anxious energy - but also boldness and pursuit to him - he just hoped that was also the author's intent - but with no manifest - with no suggestions - he had gone with what his instincts had told him to do.

Even if all he wanted to do now was find the nearest couch and sleep for the rest of the evening.

It would be another five minutes before a panel on the far wall moved and out walked a very stoic-looking Justine. Her eyes scanned the walls as she move through the gallery with a silent yet pensive expression on her face. When she finally came to the pieces in front of Mathias, her eyes flickered to them.

"Hm." The sound was the only suggestion she was even processing what she saw, what he had put together.

And then she turned on her heels and began back the way she came without another word. It was as she was opening the hidden door again that she glanced backwards.

"Well are you coming?"

Mathias nodded. "Yes, ma'am," He said, falling in to join her as she lead him out of the room, sheets in hand, making sure the room was as clean of his own presence as it could be when he left it. It was hard to try and put yourself in the mind of someone else - and he was sure that something of his won had bled through a little - but who knew - he would have to wait and see what she said.

But that could wait until they got to wherever they were going - he was curious to see how he'd done with her test. He was pretty sure it was pass fail - so he wasn't too concerned about the grade.

There was ALWAYs room to improve. Always.

She led him through the back halls of the gallery, spaces that weaved between storage of other art pieces, boxes of supplies, walls on wheels, and countless other things laying about. This was the back workings of everything the public saw, the guts of the gallery.

And if it was this much of a tornado, how was Justine's mind?

Still she knew every step and turn as she lead him in the maze before making a turn to a dead end and pushing that 'door' open.

Light flooded into the darkness as did the sound of at least fifty people with a mix of light music. Justine didn't even look back as she moved into the crowd leaving him behind.

"Mathias!" A voice perked up from near the all. Delilah knew he would recongize her voice as she moved towards him, concern written on her face. "You okay?"
