As much as she hated it, Ai had been forced to take on a few odd jobs with her traveling companion to make up for the coin the pickpockets had taken. If they had just gotten away with the food then the two could have found some way to get out of this city by now, but without money they were virtually trapped. Of course she'd had methods to get her way; methods that Lucijah's morals wouldn't abide by. At first she'd been keen to just let the shifter work off their debt so that Ai herself wouldn't have to mingle with the earthlings, but more was taken than she'd originally thought and now...

...now she was hefting crates by the docks.

There wasn't much else for an anti-social alk to do in this part of the world. Her snarl kept too many away to even consider a job as a clerk and to be honest she preferred it that way. At least doing this she could be with her own thoughts. All she had to do was move crates from a ship to some carts, then take those carts into the city. Simple, clean and with minimal interaction.

Visha was happy that he got to leave the house. Of course he was only going to the docks and it was a semi straight shot from his house so his mother didn't worry too much. But today he got to bring his dad his lunch! He was working at the docks rather than out at sea so they actually got to see him more!

He had the small basket looped over one arm as he made his way around some of the workers. There were faces he knew and others he didn't. Visha made his way steadily, knowing that the ship his dad worked on was allll the way at the end since that was where the captain liked to be. Not that the little hybrid knew why.

He was busy waving at some of the other workers when he forgot to pay attention to where he was going and bumped into someone's leg. Let's face it that was as far as he was going to reach on a full grown Alk. Blinking he tilted his head back to stare up at the person.

Out of all places Ai might have expected to see a child the docks wasn't one of them. As far as she was concerned the area was too dangerous for little feet and as much as detested them at least she could agree with the wretches in this. Something could knock into them, they might be run over by a cart, trapped by crates, get knocked off the dock, etc. So, when she was in mid-transfer of a crate and something hit her leg Ai furrowed her brow.

At first she'd assumed that some idiot had rammed her with a barrel or something, but when she looked down Ai just... kept turning her gaze downward. Goddess, earthling children were tiny...

And those eyes...

"What do you want?"

He blinked several times as if the woman's words didn't register. What did he want? Visha didn't think he'd said anything. Unless the lady meant him bumping into her. Then he could understand that. But it hadn't been on purpose.

Finally the boy shook his head before verbally answering. "Nothing. I wasn't paying attention. Sorry for running into you." He had the common sense to step back after that, putting some space between him and the Alk. Although he did continue to look at her. He liked her markings and the color. He thought they were pretty and he wondered if he could ever have something similar. He knew his dad had tattoos but they looked different.

"You deaf?" Why was he just looking at her like that? Maybe one of his eyes wasn't actually red at all, but just filled with blood from a head injury. Goddess, if he started whining around now then she'd have to find another job...

Oh, good, he could hear.

He just kept staring though, and that was starting to annoy her. So, Ai turned away from him and lifted a length of rope to tie off the cart to the wagon. "Do those eyes of yours not work or do you just have a staring problem?" The kid was a hybrid, that much was obvious. It didn't take a genius to see the frilled ears or that one, lone amber eye.

The woman was rude. That much was clear by her impatience and words. So when she asked him if he had a staring problem he gave her a look for a second before he moved his gaze to the crate she was carrying. "Yes. You are pretty." His little shoulders moved up with his words.

When something was pretty you looked at it. At least that was what he always thought. Pretty things in the market got looked at. Pretty animals were looked at and cooed over. Even pretty people were looked at and complimented.

After a moment he looked back at the Alk to see if he could notice different markings as she moved around. Visha was curious if they were all the same or not.

And they say alkidike's eyes are unnerving. She might have been able to grow accustomed to he duality of his pupils, but the way he held his gaze was disconcerting. Hadn't he ever seen an alkidike before? Probably not, no. Lovely.

"What?" At that Ai came to a complete stop and turned to the child. She was...at a loss, really. The warrior cocked a brow, confusion evident on her grizzled features. "I'm not 'pretty'." She'd seen her fair share of pretty things over the years and she most certainly wasn't one of them. Ai was short by alkidike standards, scarred and if her nose wasn't enough then her personality surely was.

He should have been scared, so why wasn't he? She should have screamed at him, thrown a crate to get him to leave but if she did then she'd lose her job and she needed the gold. So, Ai bit down on her impulses and moved to grab another crate.

"Are you deaf?" He asked innocently.

Then the woman said she wasn't pretty and he had to give her a deadpan expression. "Yes you are." He told her matter-of-factly. His free hand, the one without the basket hanging from the arm, moved to point to her face. "You have pretty markings and the color is very nice." The hybrid boy smiled at that. "Almost looks like the clear oceans of Matori." The marks were darker but still.

He looked at her clothes next though. He made a small face of disapproval. "You should dress prettier though."

Ai's eyes widened. She...honestly wasn't expecting the snap back, but that didn't mean she appreciated it. Internally she didn't know how to feel about it. She both wanted to backhand the earthling brat who dared to challenge her, but then a smaller part of her was surprised he even did it at all.

"You haven't seen many alkidike have you?" Ai responded with an equally deadpan expression. "The color is the same for all of us." As for her markings...Well, they were uniquely hers and she supposed they did look nice. The waters of Matori? Bah, what a load of nonsense. What sort of fanciful thinking was this child's parents encouraging?

'What would it matter if I dressed prettier? It's clothing; nothing more." The only bit of pride that Ai took in her appearance were the skulls she regularly wore on her hip, but having that accessory in an earthling city was frowned upon so she'd left them back in the inn.

He shook his head slightly. Since he was mostly at home he didn't see too many people. When he did go out to the market with his family he saw the usual walking about. Obans. Matorians. Hybrids. Sometimes Yaeli that newly arrived off the ships. At the docks it was usually the same. "I think you're the first one. Pretty sure I would remember seeing beautiful markings like those."

When the woman then said that clothing was nothing more then clothing he brought his brows together in a frown. "Clothing helps express who you are. If you're pretty then you should dress pretty to show it off." He moved his head slightly to the side as he looked up at her. "My moma has a bunch of dancers outfits. I can ask her for one. I bet she has one to match your markings." Or maybe something close to it.

Seeing as she couldn't really avoid him, Ai went back to working while they talked. A group of earthlings were setting crates down for her to lift and maneuver into the cart, occasionally stopping to look over the scene. A time or two one would whisper to another, followed by a little hidden laugh, that would promptly be cut off the moment she glared at them.

If you were old enough to know what these colors meant you wouldn't say that. Even to this day Ai dressed in a way that marked her as an extremist, bones of her enemies draped off her or not. So many had grown to forget which both made it easier to get around and was also a sore point for her. What was the struggle for if they were just going to move on to something else?

"I'm not a dancer and I will not dress like one." When she moved another crate to the cart, Ai couldn't help looking at the little hybrid. "What does your clothing say about you?"

He made a face as she said she wasn't a dancer. Visha could clearly tell that. His mother was and she took pride in her looks. Kept her hair nice, wore flowers in it, dressed pretty, and even took care of her skin. No rough or dry patches that sometimes could be seen on warriors. Not to mention he couldn't see his mother lifting crates for any reason. But there was something in the way the woman said what she said that made the little hybrid boy suspect he should be offended for his mother and her career choice. Not that he fully understood the why of it.

Thankfully he was distracted when the Alkidike asked what his clothes said about him. He blinked his eyes and looked down at the outfit he had on. Sure he got to pick what he wore but his mother is the one who bought the clothing originally. "That my mother buys my clothes." He looked back toward Ai and giggled. "When I'm older my clothes will be much better."

How fitting that a child who couldn't even afford the cloth on his back should dictate what others wore. It was easy enough to decide what others should look like, how 'pretty' they should appear, but the reality of it was he was too young to get the full picture. One day he would understand that it didn't matter what you looked like so long as your sword strokes were fast and strong.

"Oh will they?" She could barely hold the sarcasm out of her tone. "Let me guess, they'll be prettier?"

He took the time to shift the basket from one arm to the other since it was getting a little heavy. Of course that meant Visha's center of gravity also shifted as he leaned to the side. "Well of course!" Who would wear something ugly? Besides, he wanted something with a nice design and maybe some sewn in beading to go along with his many bracelets.

"I've been looking at a few things. I think I want a skirt for better movement." His pants often got in the way when he was trying to perform dances or splits. "And as much as I like the pretty flowy stuff, it gets caught on too much. So I think skin tight is the best way to go for a shirt." The boy nodded his head somewhat as he mused aloud.

As he looked at the Alkidike a bit more, this time taking in her clothing, he tilted his head to the opposite side. "When you move your body moves really well. I think you should have a skin tight dress. Maybe with a thicker fabric though since it looks like you use weapons." He motioned to her hands and arms. His dad used weapons and they were similar. Rough and muscular. "And you can always put stuff around your hips to draw attention there. My moma does."

"A skirt?" While Ai personally didn't care what earthlings chose to cover their lower halves, she hadn't seen too many men wearing them and those that did were often the center of ridicule. Clearly the child was already unaccustomed to boundaries since he was talking to her so maybe the transition wouldn't be as hard on him.

"You have a sharp eye." Her tone was a little less critical than before, if only because she was genuinely impressed that a child would notice those details. It was easy enough to assume she used weapons because she was an alkidike, but pointing out the state of her hands such a lot.

"You said your mother was a dancer. Having eyes drawn to her is part of her craft; for me it would only get in the way."
