Backdated to June 2021 after Reidite's awakening.

“Misha.”

His voice was soft when he tried getting his friend’s attention. It didn’t help that there were people talking loudly nearby, and voices over the intercom, and strange noises and beeping in the background.

Not waiting for him to respond, Yuuri carefully sat down on the uncomfortable couch next to him, an arm sliding around his back to offer him what he hoped was a little bit of comfort.

“What happened?”

He got the text. Lev is in the hospital. Yuuri was still out of breath because he got there as fast as he could. He was working on some final edits for one of Misha’s videos, knowing that he and his brother would be out for who knew how long that night.

Misha sat on a couch in the waiting area, staring at the ground.

He couldn’t stop thinking about Lev, lying in a pool of his own blood, weak and pale and sliding closer to unconsciousness. Logically, Misha knew it wasn’t his fault. That they might encounter a youma wasn’t so rare as to be impossible, but it wasn’t predictable either. Besides, he was a Senshi. Youma wouldn’t listen to him, no matter how much he may want them to. They found themselves in a shitty situation, and Misha did what he could to correct it, but…

Lev was hurt. He could have died. Now he was being treated for his wounds. Was it still possible that Lev might die, even after Aquamarine corrupted him and fed him a starseed? No one said. All Misha could do was sit there, with nothing but his thoughts for company.

Until Yuuri arrived.

Misha glanced up, but his movements were slower than usual, a little halting, and the smile that found its way onto his face was strained.

“Oh, hi!” he said, with forced cheer. “You didn’t have to come, you know. I would have been…”

Fine? Maybe, maybe not. With Yuuri there, Misha didn’t have to find out.

Failing to finish the thought, Misha glanced at the floor again, whispering, “There was a youma.”

Yuuri frowned, trying not to look as startled as he felt. A youma? And Misha was only a new Senshi. He hadn’t learned how to teleport yet. If he’d known how, he could have escaped more easily than what must have happened. And if Lev was hurt enough to be in the hospital…

He pulled back enough to be able to look closer at Misha, to look at his face and to check to see if he was bandaged -- or worse, bleeding -- anywhere that he could see.

“Are you okay? Are you hurt?” he asked, gently rubbing Misha’s back, trying to figure out what happened without requiring Misha to say more than he needed to. He wasn’t used to seeing Misha like this, although he didn’t blame him. He was used to seeing smiles and cheer and joking.

This? This was a darker side that Yuuri felt he was all too familiar with. And it wasn’t just because Misha was upset. There was something about his posture that revealed more under the obvious mask and happy exterior he put over himself.

“I’m so sorry I wasn’t there. Is… he going to be okay?”

“Oh…”

He was hurt, wasn’t he? Not bad. Not like Lev. Just a cut or two. Misha couldn’t remember. His wounds were treated, there were some stitches, but… it would heal. Probably in no time with the enhanced way his body worked now. Would he have scars? That wasn’t so bad.

At least he wasn’t dying.

“Just my shoulder. It’s already patched up,” he said, barely able to keep the strained smile in place.

But he did. He kept forcing it, because he wasn’t sure what would happen if he didn’t.

In public, in a hospital, with other people around everywhere, they couldn’t have much of an in depth conversation about what happened. Whispering about youma was about the extent that seemed safe.

“I managed to dust it,” he continued, “but not before…”

Lev.

It wasn’t Lev’s fault. It wasn’t Misha’s fault. That made it worse somehow, when there was no one to blame, so Misha thought back, tried to find a reason or an excuse.

They wouldn’t have run into a youma at all if he hadn’t insisted on going out.

“I called for help on the—” He didn’t know to talk about their communicators without it seeming weird or suspicious to any outsiders that might overhear, and he couldn’t say phone, because that wasn’t accurate enough to give a clear picture, so he made a fiddling gesture with his hand and hoped Yuuri knew what he was referring to. “I thought maybe Ilian would come…” At least he knew his General’s civilian name. “But it was his boyfriend…”

Yuuri glanced at Misha’s shoulder, but couldn’t see much under his clothes. He would have to check on him later once he was getting undressed to shower or something. He wanted to make sure it didn’t get infected while Misha was busy worrying about his brother.

Within the context of the conversation, even if Yuuri didn’t know who Ilian was because he and Misha had talked about his General before, just mentioning the boyfriend was enough to make Yuuri cringe and his face pale.

“What-- did he not help? He helped, didn’t he?” Because if Aquamarine didn’t, Yuuri would have a very angry complaint written to Axinite.

But Lev was in the hospital now, which meant that they either managed to get him there, or he was abandoned by Aquamarine and Misha had to wait for someone else to help--

Yuuri wrapped both arms around Misha and pulled him as close as he could allow. He wanted to still listen to anything he had to say, but he was also very concerned about how Misha was feeling. It sounded like it had been a horrible experience and Lev would need help once he was recovering. At least… Yuuri hoped this meant that he would be recovering soon. Misha hadn’t been very clear, but maybe he was still in the process of telling his story of what happened.

”He helped. In a way…”

Misha didn’t mind the hug. He liked it, actually. Yuuri was warm and kind, and his arms felt comforting, even if he was just as thin and gangly as Misha. Misha leaned as close to Yuuri as he could, put his head on Yuuri’s shoulder and closed his eyes for a bit.

Even in the waiting area, the lights of the hospital were harsh. Probably because it was nighttime and there was no daylight streaming through the windows. Despite all the ways the design of the place tried to make the hospital seem welcoming, Misha thought of it as stark and scary.

“Lev was so weak,” he explained, whispering into the side of Yuuri’s neck. “He might not have made it so… Ilian’s boyfriend…”

How to describe it in a way potential eavesdroppers wouldn’t understand?

Misha placed his palm flat against Yuuri’s chest and put the barest trace of pressure against it.

“Then he gave him a…” He tapped the tip of his finger against the place where Yuuri’s starseed would be.

Yuuri kept his arms around Misha, and lifted one of his hands to gently brush through his hair, hoping the gesture was comforting. He tried to process what Misha was saying to the best of his ability, but it sounded like Misha was saying that Aquamarine had corrupted Lev and then made him eat a starseed to save him.

So he held Misha tighter, and pressed his cheek against Misha’s hair.

“He’ll be okay,” Yuuri said, even though he was not sure if Lev would be okay or not. But he had to be. It was the only option. “Are you okay? Can I get you anything? Water? Something to eat? Do you just want me to hold you?” Because he didn’t mind. He just wanted to make sure Misha, who was so sweet and kind to him, wasn’t holding himself back if he needed to cry or be upset.

He’d never seen Misha like this before, but he had a good reason to be miserable. It was like seeing a different side to his friend that he didn’t know exist. It just made him want to protect him even more.

“I’m okay,” Misha said, in answer to every question at once.

There wasn’t anything Yuuri could get for him, not unless he could magically heal Lev, but Misha already knew that wasn’t within his powers. He didn’t want water; what if he drank too much and had to pee and wasn’t around when Lev’s doctor came out to talk to him? Something to eat would probably upset his already upset stomach. And having Yuuri hold him…

That was fine. That was the only thing Misha wanted right now.

Well, that and for his brother to be okay.

“When I joined, I didn’t want Lev to have to follow me,” he said, quiet and still as he kept his head on Yuuri’s shoulder. “I didn’t want Lev to know about it. I thought if he knew, he’d be upset with me, or ashamed, because of some of the things we have to do. Even if we’re doing them for the right reasons…”

Saving the Earth seemed a hell of a lot better than the s**t their parents got up to.

“But now, if he makes it, he’ll be stuck doing it too, and even though it would have saved him, he didn’t have much of a choice…”

Yuuri couldn’t imagine how difficult it must have been for Misha to watch as the choice to join had been taken from Lev. He didn’t know Misha’s brother very well, but even though he’d been moody and grumbled a lot in Russian (which Yuuri was fairly certain Lev knew he could understand), he’d tolerated Yuuri moving in with him and his brother.

And he knew how much Misha cared about him. It broke Yuuri’s heart to see Misha like this.

“He’ll make it,” Yuuri insisted, even as his own heart raced. “I’ve seen what… when eaten… what it can do. He has a much better chance now,” he tried to reason, even as he rubbed his hand along Misha’s back and pet at his hair as he held him. “When La--...” he stopped himself, realizing he was starting to talk about something he didn’t know if he could handle. He cleared his throat and tried again.

“Someone was injured very badly and they ate a couple. I saw what it did to help them. It’ll help Lev, too. You just need to stay strong. And if that horrible b***h does anything to make him miserable, I’ll make sure he gets transferred.”

Or at least he would make an attempt.

Misha nodded, because it was the only thing he could do.

He didn’t know what else to say. For once, it seemed he’d run out of words. Misha thought he should smile and project a positive image like always, but he didn’t have the energy for it. All he could do was sit there with his head on Yuuri’s shoulder, let Yuuri’s reassurances wash over him and hope he was right.

He had to be. Yuuri knew what he was talking about, certainly better than Misha did.

Lev would be fine.

Any second now, the doctor would come out to say that Lev was well enough for visitors.

And then…

Well, they’d figure out the rest. Somehow. Lev would be a Lieutenant. Misha would have to explain everything to him and hope Lev wasn’t too disappointed. They’d do this Negaverse thing together now, like they’d put up with their parents together. If they could survive that, then… the Negaverse had to be an improvement.

Any second now…

Any second…

Misha turned his face into the side of Yuuri’s neck and let a few tears slip free.
