It definitely didn't have to do with being a total liability in Feldspar's most recent mission ********: standing on the sidelines and hoping his general and friend would keep anything terrible from happening to him while he offered literally less than nothing to the actual assignment. He wouldn't ever be perfectly suited for direct combat. Feldspar could live with that. But just being A Thing that everyone had to jump in front of was... less tolerable.
If he could just not look like the next potential victim, that would be A+. Rakovanite had agreed to help him with the more physical aspect of his Negaverse work before they'd even gone on this last mission. So the least he could do was respond to Feldspar's messages.
Or Gideon's texts. Just any kind of acknowledgement that something hadn't gone worse after they'd made it home from the Rift. Because that was the last time Feldspar had spoken to Rakovanite: right as they were parting ways from the mission.
It had been weeks since, at this point, and Gideon didn't think his concern was entirely unwarranted. He'd gone to Nataniel's house, just looking to make sure his family had seen him- They had. His brother even gave him the address to the apartment Nat had been hanging around recently.
Gideon should've been happy to hear everything was fine- But really, it just meant he was actively being ignored, like he'd been the one to do something wrong during their mission.
Maybe he should bring backup. He didn't know the extent of Rakovanite' and his general's relationship, but they seemed on friendly enough terms, and Sylvite definitely knew more of the whole "Nega side" of things than Feldspar did. She'd probably have an idea of what they were getting into here. He messaged her from the tablet, having no other way to contact her, as he sat on a bench out in front of one of the local coffee shops, cig dangling loosely from his lips.
'Can you meet me somewhere? It'd be a casual kind of situation.' The nondirect way of saying, 'civ stuff.' He popped the address at the end of the message and leaned back and waited. He'd give her twenty minutes or so before heading off alone. If she wasn't otherwise occupied, she'd probably respond sooner than that.
