The downside of looking for a book printed last century was that Amazon didn’t always carry it. The upside to the same problem was it meant that Lena had to get off her computer for a bit and go check out a bookstore. Or three. She had found this one doing a ‘near by’ search on her phone after the last two had failed with flying colors. Used bookstores normally had a charm about them that she enjoyed and made her want to come back. When they struck out, they struck out hard! So as she glanced at the sign, she really didn’t hold up too much hope but since she was already there, in she went! The first glance, made her hopeful. Now, where was the horror section?

The shop was slow today, which was fine as it allowed him a little bit of work on his homework while he covered the shop. Thankfully he wouldn't be here when it got really busy in the night. Who'd have thought that keeping the store open late at night would be the best decision his father had ever made? Though... he supposed there wasn't much left open that late at night... Chewing idly on a pencil, he stared at the paper before him when the little bell on the inside of the front door went off and green eyes lifted from the paper. Oh. He'd never seen this woman before, not that he recalled anyway. And he liked to think he was pretty okay with remembering faces. "Hello, welcome to Prose and Cons." A soft voice, though it held a bit of husky timbre, and a pleasantly neutral expression greeted her. "Is there something I can help you find?" Homework wasn't holding his attention anyway.

Lena physically jumped at the voice, her body tensing as she turned around to realize she had completely missed seeing the man down the row of books. "Oh! You scared me." The words were light though a bit rushed as she raised a hand to her chest, trying to calm her racing heart. "Comical in a way really, all things considered." He seemed well-meaning enough, though appeared a bit bored if she hazarded a guess. Must have been a slow day. "Um, Horror?" Motioning to the bookshelves, she flicked a finger back and forth. "Well, I guess really thriller would be the correct topic. Looking for something a bit more uncommon so hoping you might have it."

"Ah, sorry..." an apologetic look as he made his way around the counter, leaving his pencil with his homework. That was what he got for zoning out he supposed, though he did feel a bit bad for scaring her. Confused a bit about how it was comical, he offered a chuckle as her answer clued him in. Very ironic. Though he definitely seemed to perk up at the mention of horror/thriller. "A horror fan, hm?" A moment to glance about before motioning for her to follow him, so he could lead her to the section. It was a bit out of the way, towards the back and in a slightly darker corner of the shop. Fitting for it, really. "What's the book, if you don't mind me asking." He didn't know all of their stock by heart but he did try to keep up to date on their horror section.

"A little bit of everything, really," Lena admitted, following the man as he moved them towards the back of the store. "I don't have much time for pleasure reading normally so I tend to try everything at least once." Glancing at a few of the sections, she was surprised to see a nice mix of old and new books. It seemed the others she had gone to that day specialized in one or the other. This didn't discriminate. " A Matter of Men." She rattled the title off, glancing back not sure if she had seen the cover of another book she'd been reading recently or not. "I believe the author is Gerrold if I remember correctly. Have you read anything by him? Worth the time?"

"That's not a bad way of doing it, good way of finding a preferred genre too. If you have one." He did and he was picky about it too, but he kept that to himself. The store tried to keep a hold of just about anything it could, books were his dad's passion after all. And he had to keep up with the big chain stores on top of it. What good was a book store that only specialized in old books? " A Matter of Men, huh?" A moment to think as he came to a stop at the specified section she was looking for. Thriller was kept in the same area. "I can't say for sure if that's one we have in stock at the moment, but I know it's one I haven't read. Not quite my cup of tea but it's an interesting premise all the same."

"I think it's always interesting to see how people pull their view on 'aliens' and invasions," Lena admitted candidly thought she could tell it was something he may not agree with. "A mix of work and pleasure so I don't feel like I'm goofing off too badly. Reading Steven King or even some other sci-fi books makes me feel like I should be doing something else." Oh, work was her life and her life was work. "War of the Worlds is a bit overdone in my mind and so nice to get a different taste."

"That's understandable, not everyone does the genre the same way so I'm sure some takes are better then most." He'd given a couple a try but they just weren't for him. He'd stick with his paranormal or eldritch deities thanks. "War of the Worlds is only interesting in the case of it's first radio drama and the purposed panic it supposedly caused, though I did find the Tom Cruise movie version not terrible. Though I think the credit for that is the sound design." But he could definitely agree that War of the Worlds was overdone. "Sci-fi can be hard though, some of it far too convoluted for my tastes. And Stephen King certainly isn't for everyone. His more paranormal like stories are more my taste, if I had to be honest. So I can understand that."

"Stephen King is hit or miss for me if I was to be upfront. Things like It and The Shining are popular but I think it was the movies that did it. The Mist was more interesting because it left some things up to the reader to decide." Lena realized she was rambling and quickly smiled. "Sorry. Not every day I chat books. Normally it's all robotics, coding, and paperwork. You are properly putting me into that page of 'get out of my shop quickly' customers for it." White Trickster Rabbit Apologies for the delay. Work ate my life

Sirene Naiads you're good boo, take all the time you need~ There was a small, amused chuckle from the blonde and he shook his head. "It's fine, that's part of what my dad likes about having a book shop." Especially a used one. "He likes to talk shop and it comes with the territory, I think." Someone was inevitably going to come in and gush, and it was fine honestly. He just wasn't so fond of talking about his own likes and dislikes without prompting. Which, he supposed, was why she probably thought he wanted her out asap. He was a better listener then a talker in all honesty. "So, you work in robotics huh? What's that like?" A curious glance her way. "Not that I'm trying to have you talk further into shop talk, it's just not something I find most people are into."

"Sort of." Lena admitted with a shrug, looking for the first time a bit sheepish when he asked. "I mostly work on the coding and computer aspects of it than the physical builds of anything because the structures we build tend to be very specialized." Clicking her tongue, she reached into her purse and pulled out her lanyard with ID badge. It was less showing off as she held up the NASA clearance and more habit that most people didn't believe she literally worked for NASA when she just told them. "May explain my love of space lore and aliens, no? I mean I'm no astronaut but I know a few."

Oh that sort of robotics. That made all the more sense when combined with her preference of sci-fi/horror. Another chuckle from the blonde. "Specialized indeed. Though I imagine the coding and computer work is much more important then the build itself." The coding tended to make it work, after all. "But I can definitely see why your preference is the way it is." But NASA, man. That was the big time work there, it wasn't hard to say he was thoroughly impressed. And he was sure it paid well too. "If you want, I can keep an eye out for more aliens and space lore type books for you as they come in." He wasn't sure if thriller/horror was her preferred genre but he was sure they got more of those in then anything. "Give you a heads up when they come in and you can see if it's anything that catches your fancy."

"Really?" His offer came as a bit of a surprise, catching her off guard as she seemed to really weigh the options. He might catch things she missed and offer her a chance to read things that otherwise would slip past her radar. After all, reading the back of a book only told you so much. "Well if it isn't too much trouble, I would really appreciate that offer." Seeing his surprise and consideration wasn't hard, especially because she was used to seeing one of two reactions: this or an eye roll. Yes NASA, THAT NASA. It was a dream come true. And a headache all in one. "As I said, I only have so much time to pleasure read but having a recommendation always helped. Reading something written in English over computer codes is always a welcome break." "If you don't mind me asking, you mentioned your father owned the store. Are you in business with him o or?"

"It's definitely not an issue. You'll just need to leave your name and a name or email we can reach you at." They could do that when they got back to the counter though. They definitely had similar deals for other people, though mostly just for writers as opposed to a whole genre type. To each their own. "We'll see if can't find you plenty more to read that isn't computer code for when you have time to read." The smile he offered her with his words fell just a bit at her question, green eyes blinking some. Oh, right. He had mentioned his dad hadn't he? A small, slightly sheepish chuckle. "Nah, he is sole proprietor of the shop to be honest. I just help out whenever I can between classes and such." It allowed his dad to take a break, spend some time with his brother. Not that his dad hadn't asked but... He felt a little weird taking the ownership spot his mother would have taken were she still alive.

There was something that changed in his words and in his smile when she mentioned his father. The seed of regret was planted inside of her and if she could have taken the question back, she would have. "That is really kind of you." Lena found herself offering, trying to brighten her smile. "Most people seem to run as far away from their parents' professions as possible so the fact you are willing to help out in your free time is wonderful." Boy she sounded like an old lady right then. "Though, I can't say I wouldn't do the same if this is where my parents worked." With an easy touch, she reached out to run a hand along the back of a few books. "I'd be late to class if I was still in school. Or my own job if I was helping out here."
