Name: Melody Klein Nicknames: Mel, Mellie, Yinghua (mostly by Dongmei, though occasionally by one of her uncles), Pumpkin (father only) Pronouns: She/her Age: 17 Birthday: July 19th, 2004
School: Mayet Secondary School; Junior (attended 2 years at St. Cecelia's)
Hobbies:
Cello -- Music wasn't originally Melody's first love, having wanted to follow in her mother's footsteps as a model when she was younger, but it was certainly her second; and most strongest. Having stumbled upon her Granny playing a flute, the young girl found a sudden passion for music and tried all sorts of instruments; though that was more at her mom's insistence then her own. Though she was good at all that she tried, picking it up easily, she found a preference in the cello.
Mostly she found she liked the way it seemed her emotions better influenced the sounds she produced over all others, like her own soul is being put into every note she played with the passing of her bow. And while she eagerly takes to learning all sorts of pieces; classical, video game, you name it, her favourites are the pieces she's written herself. Though don't expect to hear or read them, as they're kept in a binder under her bed.
Dongmei and Seiji helped her make an Instagram account, under the name SakuraMelodies, where she posts short videos of covers of music she's done. They've also been trying to talk her into making a Youtube account to do full cover videos on, but she's not sure about that just yet. They are starting to wear her down though. She does also own a violin, which she toys with playing once in a blue moon, but mostly uses it to better duet with Seiji when they get together to play.
Running -- Something she started back when she wanted to follow in her mother's modeling footsteps, Melody has continued to keep up with running as her main form of exercise (unless you count carrying around her cello case as also exercise). Typically, when she lived with her parents, she ran twice a day; once in the morning and once at night. Now that she's living with her uncles and cousin she really only does a run in the morning but sometimes manages to squeeze one in at night as well.
Cooking -- Since moving in with her uncles, Melody has found she often misses the food her parents would cook. While Chinese food is a staple in the Kai household, the one thing she doesn't get often unless ordered in is Vietnamese food. As such, with her mother's recipe book in hand (which was passed down from her Granny), she's taken up learning how to cook the meals she misses the most.
Niu has even taken to giving her a helping hand in learning those dishes, as well as teaching her how to cook Chinese food as well. She's been working on making her own recipe book of the meals and deserts she loves the most.
Korean Dramas -- With her parents in Korea spending time with them is harder then it was before. Never quite into drama shows before now, in an effort to spend a little bit of time with her mother across the long distance Melody has made it a habit. Once a week, usually on the weekend, they video call and watch the latest episode of her mother's favored shows, all of them in the Korean Drama genre.
She isn't quite sure when or why her mother started watching Korean Dramas specifically, she has memories of Chinese Dramas when she was younger, but she can't deny the appeal of them. Plus it's been a fun way to immerse herself in the language, since she can't hear her father speak it unless they voice chat.
Pros:
Not just a Pokemon title~Heart of Gold -- Within Mel's chest beats a heart that believes everyone deserves to be treated nicely and with kindness. She makes an active point to greet everyone she meets, even if it's with just a simple smile, and regularly offers her shoulder for someone to cry one. She's even come home late on more then one occasion because she's stopped to help someone find something they lost or return a missing child back to their parents.
Everything will surely be alright.Optimistic -- Melody is nothing if not optimistic. She tries to look at the bright side of everything even when the chips are down. No matter what goes wrong, or what she perceives as going wrong, Melody believes that something good has to come from all bad that may be going on in that moment.
When things start to get hairy or go awry she takes in a deep breath, closes her eyes and repeats a simple phrase that reminds her that nothing is as bad as it seems. "Everything will surely be alright."
Be gentle to all...Gentleness -- Not one for the harshness of the world around her, everything she does is soft and gentle. From the way she holds her books, to the way she speaks and even how she treats others, she is gentle and caring. She'll not raise her voice and will try to talk things out verbally.
Cons:
There are no cats in America!Idealistic -- What first seems as only child-like innocence is simply Melody choosing to see the world through rose-tinted glasses. While she understands violence happens, she refuses to believe that people could be so willing to do such a thing and that there must be a reason. There are no such thing as bad cops or evil, it's all just misunderstandings and all that is needed is to show these misunderstood people some compassion.
I would lay down my life.Self-Sacrificing-- There's a need to protect everyone and everything, no matter how insignificant or evil they may be. In her mind no one is more important than anyone else and everyone deserves a chance to live. And, in her mind, she will do whatever she can to make sure that happens.
Even if the cost could become her life.
And stern with yourself.High Self Standards-- With a former model for a mother, an actress and singer for a grandmother, and novelist for a father Melody has a lot to live up to in the way of standards. And though her family has always been good, for the most part, about allowing her to be herself; there always seems to be this underlying current to be the best she can be in all matters. Be it personality, dress, grades... She's set the bar high and it's not really a good thing. It's a strain to keep up with the standards she's set for herself, as it allows for little down time or time to simply be herself, and the first sign of this stress was when she went and cut her once long hair in a fit of pique.
There aren't many she's close enough to that are allowed to see her in such a vulnerable position and she aims to keep it that way, Dongmei aside. But if you get close enough, just perhaps...
Notes of interest:
Melody is 1/2 Vietnamese (her mother), 1/4 Chinese and 1/4 Korean (her father). She speaks better Vietnamese then she does Chinese (Mandarin) or Korean, though her uncles and cousin are helping her improve on her Chinese. She can say some small phrases or words in Korean but she understands it better then she speaks it. It's next on her list once she's gotten the hang of speaking Chinese better. She reads and writes fluently in Vietnamese and can read Korean and Mandarin. Currently living with her uncles and cousin while her parents are away in Korea, and as such as returned to attending Mayet Secondary School so it would be less of a strain. Did small bouts of baby/children's clothing modeling when she was young, under the watchful eye of her mother. She was about seven when she stopped and picked up the cello at about eight and a half. Her mom has a bad habit of trying to potentially set Mel up with arranged marriages, feeling they'd be good for her daughter who's shown no interest in dating yet. Nothing's worked out yet and, at the moment, she's seemed to have paused her attempts. She really hopes her mom won't try and make it a thing again any time soon. Scent/Perfume: Cherry blossoms, cream, honeysuckle, plum blossoms, and gardenia. Her father, Alexander Jianyu Klein (40) is a well known young adult fiction writer, known best for his Ruby Nights series; which is about a magical thief named Ruby Night. The series was brought to an end three years ago and he's been working on a new series set to release sometime in the future but an exact date is unknown as he's moved to Korea currently to take care of his ailing father. Linh-Nguyet Klein (42), Melody's mother, is a former model who had her daughter at 25 then worked herself almost stupidly to get back to the weight she had been before getting pregnant. Keeping to a strict diet and style, she hadn't quite realized how unhealthy it was for herself until a young Melody (around seven and a half) was trying to emulate her mother as she wanted to follow in her footsteps. With this realization Linh turned her attention away from modeling and more into being an activist for healthier conditions for models, as well as starting up her own modeling agency; which employs models of all sizes and genders, and allows her to better be in charge of the conditions in which her models work.
As she has been in Korea with her husband for the last several months, a trusted employee has taken over running the state side agency while she's away. At the same time Linh is using this as an opportunity to expand her business overseas and is in talks with trying to get an agency started in Korea. Ca-Mai Sang (deceased), affectionately referred to as Granny or Granny Sang, was once a well known actress who got her start in her 20s. She had a very wide range during her time in Vietnam but found a foothold in period pieces once she moved to the states. A musician on top of it, she often did her own singing/musical pieces when called for and eventually stopped acting to become a singer.
It was thanks to her flute playing that Melody eventually stopped wanting to follow in her mother's footsteps and found a love for music that would lead to her picking up the cello. Playlist
General Appearance
Melody has honey blonde hair with a pink ombre dye effect on the ends that was recently cut short. It's still weird to get use to it being down constantly but she's learning how to accessorize with barrettes and headbands.
Her eyes are almond shaped, brown, and very expressive. They fit surprisingly well on her face, which is thin though elegant and oval in shape with a rounded nose and full lips. Her skin color is that of warm tan, a tan color with a gold under tone.
Melody is 5'6" and willowy in frame. She is average in the "asset" department.
Fashion wise her style isn't set to one set of fashion, especially considering she is the daughter of a former model. But whatever she does choose to wear you can bet it's high quality and always on point. Recently she's found a love of crop tops, long/over sized tank tops, and baggy shirts over sports bras or tight tops (occasionally turtleneck styled) paired with shorts or capris and either a nice pair of sneakers or flats.
Accessory wise she tends to wear a single pair of rose gold earrings, a necklace featuring a stylized cherry blossom set with a pink opal and a matching ring.
