It had simply been a run in with some particularly vicious water weeds, but at least Kalina had found a friend out of it, and it was another corrupt to boot! She stayed relatively quiet as she led Haspira towards her house. “I hope you like cats. I have two and they’re very sweet...ah. If I’m talking too much, just let me know.”

It was the first thing she had said since they had left the reservoir and she wished she hadn’t bothered...she sounded like a fool.

She hadn’t had a friend in the Negaverse since...well. Since she had left the city and she didn’t want to lose this potential one, sounding like a dumbass.

“We can eat too. Order pizza or whatever you want. I have money and can pay no problem. It’s…”

All she was good for? Money? Her fancy houses and good food and...whatever else. But.

No. Now wasn’t the time to be brooding though...a near drowning was plenty of reason to brood. “If I were stronger I think I could have just teleported us closer...what do you like to eat, Haspira? Do you want anything special?”

There was a large house in the distance and Kalina gave a silent word of thanks to whoever might be listening. The safety of home. At last.

"Please, don't apologize. I don't mind the walk." It gave her hair time to dry out, and her mind time to process everything. Life was completely new to her, yet nothing really surprised her. They'd passed a theater on the way and her attention lingered in passing, and she asked herself when she'd seen a theater before, and came up blank. But its ostentatiousness wasn't new to her.

She'd have to ask Axinite what happened to her memories, exactly.

The house in the distance looked expensive, though she didn't know why. A lot of houses in the area looked expensive. They were several times larger than her humble apartment, she knew, and she wondered why they were heading in that direction. Did Kalina actually live over here, or were they passing through?

The question caught her in her thoughts, and she smiled faintly. "Well, ah, I don't remember what I like to eat." It seemed the most natural thing to admit — she had no memories. But that wasn't a very helpful answer, so she added, "But I'd like to try tandoori chicken." It looked, and smelled, like something she'd like. Brilliant red with spices, supple on the inside, juicy, flavorful.

"I could eat anything, though, if there's something you're hungry for." She couldn't exactly pay since she hadn't gotten a job yet, but. It didn't seem like Kalina was looking for remuneration.

When they reached Kalina’s house, the girl walked up to the door and opened it, gesturing for Haspira to go in before her. “Tandori chicken, hm? I’ll have to look up to see if there are any good Indian restaurants that deliver here, but I’m game for that! It sounds tasty.”

She kicked off her shoes in the foyer and gave a long suffering sigh. “Make yourself at home, yeah? It’s just me here right now so, no worries about anyone giving you a strange look or anything. Mm...Help yourself to the kitchen, I’m going to put on something comfier if that’s all right.” Kalina tugged the other woman to the couch and tugged her onto it, hurrying to put both of her cats on the couch with her. “They’re going to love you, give them lots of scratches under the chin, okay?”

She left the room a moment later, returning in a pair of pajamas that looked warm. There was another pair tucked under her arm and she held them out to Haspira. “I don’t know if you wanted to get comfy too, but here’s some for you if you want. Also, what about this place? It sounds good to me and the ratings are good.” Kalina held her phone out to the other girl, an Indian restaurant pulled up on a delivery app. “Order whatever you want. My treat.”

"Oh —" She was sat down on the couch at Kalina's insistence (and it was a nice couch, she found, springy and soft), but then there were furbags that joined her. Two little sacks of cat that looked both offended and expectant of her, and Haspira wasn't sure if they would hit her for trying.

She couldn't remember being around cats before. She knew cats were involved in a senshi's awakening, so she must have been around a cat at least once — wait, that was a moon cat, or a guardian cat, or whatever they called themselves. Were these regular cats? Did Kalina prefer regular cats to talking cats?

"Can you talk? Can I pet you?" She asked the pair, and one meowed. Tentatively she reached forward to pet one, and the gesture was accepted enough that she didn't get swatted. So she gave gentle scritches under the chin, pleased at the soft fur, and the cat accepted it indifferently. She must not have been that good at petting cats; maybe she never had one before.

Then Kalina was back, looking ready for bed. She accepted the rolled-up fleece pajamas, feeling a little confused, but she was beginning to put it together. They'd be more comfortable than a button-up silk blouse and the high-waisted slacks she wore from interview practice earlier. Modesty was a thing; she would have to slip off to a bathroom later, but one of the cats invited itself into her lap (probably because she had black slacks and the cat wasn't black), so the pajamas would have to wait.

"Thank you, I appreciate it." She took the phone, scrolled through their options. Tandoori chicken, right there. "They're still setting up my bank account and temp job, so I don't have any money to my name yet. You'd be surprised how many things people do that involve money…" Or, at least, she was. Having picked tandoori chicken and a vegetable dhansak, she offered the phone back to Kalina.

"Your place is really impressive." Having tucked the pajamas against her side for the moment, she returned to absently petting the cat. The other one was content to curl up against the pajamas. "Do you live here by yourself?"

Kalina grinned when she saw her cats positively adoring her new friend. That was good. They liked people, she had worked hard to make sure of that. Well, she had worked hard to make sure that they liked her. But...they were cool with everyone who wasn’t too grabby...or needy so..that was good.

Taking her phone back, Kalina plopped onto the couch next to the catnapping tandori chicken loving stranger who she had invited home and began scrolling through the different offerings, wrinkling her nose in concentration as she tried to figure out what to get. Finally deciding on a butter chicken entree, a few chicken samosas and three orders of garlic naan, because who could say no to garlic? Or naan bread? She didn’t even look at the price as she filled in the information to have it delivered, and then tossed her phone to the side, scooping up the cat that wasn’t giving Haspira’s lap a fresh coat of fur and cuddling him close, though she left the pajamas behind.

“Don’t worry about money, I’ve got it, And yeah, most things need money, how long until you have the bank situation set up? Are you good for like...food and stuff in the meantime?” She glanced over, an obvious concern in her eyes. “I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but uh. I’m pretty well off. I’m normally here by myself, yeah. Right now my parents are on some world cruise that lasts for…” She hesitated and took a look at her phone. “They’ll be back in November. They do this all the time, they love to travel.”

Taking a minute to rub the now purring cat’s tummy for a moment, she glanced back at the other woman. “...So...what’s your story? You seem like you’re really new at...just about everything. Are you okay?”

"I think so," she mused as she pressed a finger to her cheek. The other hand was occupied stroking her new furry companion. "I got set up with a Lieutenant from Infiltration as my point of contact. I just have to let her know what I'm running low on, and she fronts it to me while the bank account gets sorted out. Last they told me, they had it set up in a dummy bank and were finishing up falsifying my credit history. I suppose they can't use the line of credit from whoever I was before." If she even had any credit.

Haspira wasn't sure how much changed about a person when they lost their memories, but she wanted to think their personality traits and their strengths remained largely the same. She was astute, and detail-oriented, so she wanted to think she used to be good with money.

She had enough humility, now, to accept a meal. "Your place is beautiful, honestly." She made a show of looking around, observing the high ceilings, the architectural detailing that wasn't the same builder-grade nailed-on moulding that lined her floors, the arches and slopes, the decor — everything. Kalina lived in a veritable mansion, and that kind of thing was enviable. She wasn't sure what she would do with a space like this long term, but she wouldn't mind living in the lap of luxury for a few days. "You think the Negaverse will afford us opportunities like that? Traveling for months of the year?" That would be the dream. She wasn't sure who she was before, but she hoped she loved to travel.

Kalina's next question was a difficult one, and Haspira observed a few seconds of silence to organize her thoughts. Kalina didn't seem rash,, and nothing about her demeanor bespoke violence toward new recruits of any type. But they didn't necessarily preclude it, either. She would tread carefully.

"I was brought into the Negaverse by Cleeia, Mirzam, Miyamoto, and Axinite a few weeks ago. They said there was some trauma to my starseed during the process, and as a result, I lost a lot of my memories. To answer your other question, I am okay. I may not remember anything about who I was, but I don't feel lacking for it, either. I'm glad to be with the Negaverse; they've taken good care of me."

Oh! So she was new to this...Lost her memories...that wasn’t something that...was normal, was it? If she could find someone to ask...well. She would but...Kalina doubted there was anyone that she would want to talk to about it, now that her main mentor was MIA. “ Well! Welcome to the family then, and hell, if it doesn’t allow for traveling, I’ll take you sometime! It could be fun! It’s okay to travel alone but it’s always better with friends.”

Watching Haspira look around the house was almost amusing. The place wasn’t as gaudy as it could be, but it was obviously ostentatious. Most mansions were simply by the fact that they were large. Her parents had taste at the very least.

“...It’s crazy how well connected the Negaverse is. I’m really glad that you’re being taken care of, that’s good. And now that you know me, I can help too, if you’re up for it!”

She was lonely. And this was fun. Someone relatively close to her own age, in the same situation...so to speak.

They had the common ground of almost drowning, so that was...something right? Definitely something.

Friendships could be built on much less than that and flourish.

She hadn't known Kalina for very long, but she'd already learned quite a bit about the whale-esque Senshi. She was motivated, and open, and lightly exuberant. She wanted to help without looking for money, so ostensibly her only gain in this was friendship. She was carefree with her words, which was refreshing when compared with Axinite, who spent time picking only the most precise sentences to deliver. She seemed authentic. She had two cats, and her parents owned a house the size of a castle.

Or maybe it wasn't — Haspira had never been to a castle that she could recall — but it seemed big enough to be a castle. And she liked to travel.

"I need all the help I can find," Haspira answered with a light chuckle. In a good mood, she gave one of the cats scritches under the neck. "Turns out that there's a lot to do to make a person from scratch. The legal part seems the easiest of it when there's a General-King who can make me a social security card. But, making memories and experiences? I'm definitely going to need your help for that."

Gently she scooted the cat off her lap and onto the couch, where it complained for its new lodgings. She stood, then the furry thing curled up in the warm spot she left behind, and Haspira stretched until she heard one of her hips pop. "To be honest, I've wanted to get to know some people before they threw me in the deep end with my new assignment. It seems… Wiser to have made a few connections before I tell other people how to make connections."

Then the doorbell rang, and Haspira assumed that was the food.

“You’re right though. It’s important to make some connections. Speaking as someone who doesn’t really have any...I hope you get some good ones. It’ll make things better for you in the long run.”

Kalina watched her cat fondly and turned her head to the door, grinning. “Sweet. I’ll go and get that, if you want to sit at the table? Or just the couch. I’m good with whatever.”

Perhaps...nearly drowning had been...well. Not good for them both...but good in the sense that they now each had someone else to talk to. It was good for Kalina at least. She needed a friend, and as she went to get the food, slipping the delivery guy a twenty and smiling, she felt rather hopeful.

Maybe she’d be able to actually rise in rank...maybe she’d be able to make herself proud, since there was nobody above her to make proud anymore.

...But perhaps that didn’t matter.

“Yum!” She called, closing the door behind her. “Let’s dig in!”
