The Meteor Shower (9) : One of the hallmark features of the Star Festival is the week long meteor shower that kicks off at the beginning of the celebrations. The first night is usually a little slow, and it picks up more on the second and third evening, but tonight is different. Within the first hour of the first visible falling meteor, something hits the ground with enough force that the ground trembles and power is lost for a few seconds. The impact can be heard throughout the city and the news reports that a small meteor made impact--only, they don’t report that they can’t find any damage and have no idea where it landed. Maybe that’s enough to convince some people, but anyone who knows about this powered war might expect that nothing good ever comes from space.

As a not-so-secret cosmic conflict raged on in Destiny City, there were plenty of reasons for people to come and go. Some people were afraid of what was going on. Some people couldn't handle it. So many people left out of a simple desire for safety.
Other people were curious, drawn to it and excited by the magic and mystery. So plenty of others came here out of a desire to know and experence what was going on. Some people ended up getting more than they bargained for: a new name, a new responsibility, an entire new place in the cosmos. New memories of an age long past. For some, these were fortunate developments that added new meaning to life. For others, they were a curse.

And then, past the dramatic and unbelievable reasons, there were all the usual reasons people might arrive, leave, or return to this city. Relationships changed. Priorities changed. Jobs changed. Desires changed.

The city was named after fate, but it was so very much shaped by choice.

Simon Ferris had plenty of his own reasons to distance himself from Destiny City. He'd grown up in a home that treated him like he was defective. He'd gotten drafted into a magical war without his consent. He'd risked his life fighting battles for a cause he didn't understand. He'd lost contact with his girlfriend, who at the time seemed like a fated lover -- they were both senshi of the Pleiades. The city had imposed burdens on him that he had never asked for, never wanted.

But he never moved away.

He had stayed here this whole time.

For a time, he wanted to. For a time, he'd made plans. But he couldn't bring himself to leave. Instead, he quietly put away his henshin pen and distanced himself from the magical side of his life as much as he could. He ignored the buzzing of global messages on his senshi phone, turned off news reports about magical fights and mysterious events. He set aside the hints of memory he had uncovered during his travels to the planet orbiting Atlas. He sequestered himself away in the quietest corner of the city he could find, trying to build a life for himself and figure out who he was on his own terms.

Astraea had tried to take away his right to do that. She hadn't asked him if he wanted to be the senshi he had the potential to be, he had realized. He'd been forced to do it. And as he became more sure of himself, he decided he didn't want to do anything he had been forced to do.

But then something he couldn't ignore happened.

Simon was out waiting for the meteor shower with a couple of work friends, happily chatting away with his tablet and enjoying some drinks. It was a perfect way to kick off the Star Festival. When he pointed up at the first falling stars to appear, everyone applauded -- and it was all downhill from there.

The ground shook. The city lights a mile away flickered. And then everyone was checking their phones, trying to figure out what had happened. Simon silently prayed it was just an earthquake, but something in him knew that it was going to be something that pulled him out of hiding.

And as the word 'meteor' reached the lips of his colleagues, his heart sank.

It was a mysterious object from space. And after ignoring sign after sign for years, he knew he was going to have to check this one out.

Return of the Merchant (10) : Investigation for the curious meteor impact may yield few results for the civilian scientists of Destiny City--but they don’t have the keen eye and aura sensing ability of their local powered warriors. Cloaked by a mysterious device that emits a unique energy signature, the impact site of the meteor is hidden inside a strange, watery bubble that spans easily a hundred feet in all directions around it. This strange shield seems to reflect light, making it appear as though there is nothing inside--but, if you look for long enough, you can make out shapes and movement. You cannot pass through the barrier, nor can sounds or light. If you attempt to walk through it, you simply pass through the other side, as if you’d walked in a straight line. That might be peculiar on its own--except, there’s a sign posted where the energy signature is strongest. Painted in fancy, iridescent ink, elegantly scrawled, the sign reads ‘Temporarily Closed for Business.’ Beneath that is a painting of a wispy, floating little orb. Text below the picture reads, ‘WANTED. Will reward handsomely.’

The shop may be closed for tonight, but tomorrow is a different story. It might be worth coming back if you can find one of those wisps.

A meteor had crashed somewhere around Destiny City, and Simon couldn't bring himself to stay away. Part of him always knew he'd delve into his magical identity again. He couldn't ignore it forever, after all, and it had been so difficult to remain in hiding. Why else would he have stayed here? Why else would he have let his plans to leave fall by the wayside?

He just had a lot of his own problems to figure out first. The tablet that never left his side was proof of that.

Nowadays, it was the primary tool he used to talk to people. It had taken years of trial and error and experimentation to not only find the right technology, but also get it to work the way he needed it do. There wasn't exactly a whole lot of room to fight cosmic evil in the midst of having to entirely relearn how to communicate. He didn't even know if he could still be a senshi the way he was now. The way he'd learned it, the magic was entirely focused on speech, on calling out attacks. And if he had to force himself to do that... it wasn't worth it.

Simon remembered how exasperated Astraea had been about it, on the day she had drafted him. He hadn't made the connection at the time, but she was so much like the speech therapist he had at a very young age: pushing and scolding him to produce the words she wanted to hear. Punishing him verbally for getting it wrong. Acting like the world would end if he didn't get it right. It still made him shiver with pain and disgust to think about, even now. He'd spent so long twisting his mind in knots to please other people, and it had taken so much work to heal from the damage.

And yet, here he was, digging around for his henshin pen again. He wasn't doing it to serve anyone this time, he was genuinely concerned about what it meant for the city. Eventually, he found it tucked away in a bag of random trinkets.

And he spent a good, long time staring at it.

Could he still use it? Should he still use it? He took a deep, shaking breath, and took it outside. With equally shaky hands, he slowly entered the words into his tablet. In spite of how natural it felt to use now, this felt so strange. Astraea kept barking at him in his mind, to say the words.

But he was saying them. The right way.

"Atlas Star Power. Make Up."

He was immediately lifted off the ground, and a cosmic light engulfed his body. Super Sailor Atlas had arrived once again. He stared at his shoes, his gloves, and the apple shaped clasp on his necktie. It worked. It felt good, even.

The tablet was neatly and intuitively tucked away into subspace, and he jumped out into the city. It was thrilling to feel the wind and speed again, the ease of movement. While he still wasn't as fast as a car, his agility in this form made it easy to cover a long distance.

Eventually, a presence reached his awareness, something unfamiliar. Moving in that direction, the sheen of a large bubble came into view, faintly reflecting the starlight. So, his instincts were right. There was something about the meteor. The other senshi in the area no doubt had noticed... and the Negaverse surely had as well.

For now, that was enough. He didn't want to get close and risk getting into a fight with someone else who might be investigating the scene. Instead, he jumped away in another direction, thinking about how to be Sailor Atlas again.
