The Calling (7) : A beautiful melody drift on the air from somewhere far away. The vocals are in a language you don’t quite recognize, but feel somehow familiar to you. Something about the song calls to you, but no matter where you go, the song seems to sound the same distance away. The longer it goes on, the more emotional the song becomes--and the more emotional you become. Something about the song is possessive and consuming, like it’s all you can think of. Something resonates in you as the song crescendos, and the feeling is at its strongest--be they good, bad, anything, but suddenly the song fades, and there’s only an emptiness inside of you. The feeling of loss is strong, and can leave someone feeling emotionally numb. Someone out there was calling to you, and you couldn’t find them.

Something was calling him. Music. A song? He couldn’t understand it. But it was there in the distance. He didn’t recognize the voice, but it still felt familiar. Maybe it was just the wind? Maybe it was just his imagination?

Kamacite had been sitting on his usual spot at the edge of a building overlooking the city, twisting the star charm between his fingers that he’d picked up from a street vendor. It was close to a park near the edge of the city limits, in case he wanted to escape to some place with fewer people, but there were plenty of Destiny City civilians to draw energy from. No one usually bothered looking up at him, even with his bright orange and sunset colored robes. And if they did, it was easy for him to teleport away before they realized what they saw.

But tonight was different. Strange. There had been a couple meteors that shot through the sky, close enough that they could be seen even in the brightness of the city lights, and he was still thinking about how Cymophane almost lost his brother to a youma. How Faustite had been pissed off at him. How he was missing people in his life that he didn’t know if he could ever get back.

Quietly, Kamacite pushed himself up. It was difficult to tell exactly where the song was coming from, but it was growing increasingly more and more difficult to ignore.

Were they calling to him? Or did he just happen to get caught in the soundwaves?

Eventually he decided to try the park. It seemed like the only place that would allow for the sound to carry easily. As he suspected, there was no one of interest there. And while the singing continued, he couldn’t figure out how far away it was, or even recognize the voice. He didn’t even know why he was trying to find this voice in the first place. Yes, he was usually curious about the strange things that happened in the city, but this song had nothing to do with him.

Right?

Except maybe it did, because he felt like something was calling to him. Past the trees the voice was calling. It went close to where reports of falling stars had landed but couldn’t be found. And as Kamacite continued to follow the voice, his heart aching for reasons unknown, the voice seemed to keep getting further and further away.

Until it stopped completely.

The emotion he felt was horrible. It was the same he’d felt after realizing those he cared about might never be making it back. That he would never see them again. By some miracle, Faustite made his way out of the Rift after being lost for two years, but that was all.

Kamacite clutched at his chest, rubbing it as though it would somehow ease the pain. Figuring there was no point in pursuing the voice now, he took a step backwards, and stumbled a little as he stepped on a heavy piece of rock.

No, it wasn’t just a rock he decided as he leaned down to inspect it. It had created a small crater around it. One of the pieces of meteor that had landed in the city? But when he reached to pick it up, something resonated inside him. A new power. He could feel it by instinct, a new way to channel his magic, to create darkness before blinding those around him. But how…? Was it the rock, or the strange voice…? Both…? Either way, Kamacite wasn’t going to risk his chances staying out longer. He would have to experiment with his new powers later.
