Quote:
Return of the Merchant (10) : Investigation for the curious meteor impact may yield few results for the civilian scientists of Destiny City--but they don’t have the keen eye and aura sensing ability of their local powered warriors. Cloaked by a mysterious device that emits a unique energy signature, the impact site of the meteor is hidden inside a strange, watery bubble that spans easily a hundred feet in all directions around it. This strange shield seems to reflect light, making it appear as though there is nothing inside--but, if you look for long enough, you can make out shapes and movement. You cannot pass through the barrier, nor can sounds or light. If you attempt to walk through it, you simply pass through the other side, as if you’d walked in a straight line. That might be peculiar on its own--except, there’s a sign posted where the energy signature is strongest. Painted in fancy, iridescent ink, elegantly scrawled, the sign reads ‘Temporarily Closed for Business.’ Beneath that is a painting of a wispy, floating little orb. Text below the picture reads, ‘WANTED. Will reward handsomely.’

The shop may be closed for tonight, but tomorrow is a different story. It might be worth coming back if you can find one of those wisps.

Somewhat glad that the Eternal Senshi agreed to accompany her, Lavendulan rose from her perch in all of her 5’2” glory and leisurely stretched her arms above her head.

“Since we don’t know what’s out there, I’m not really inclined to teleport to the ground,” would probably be best to conserve her energy until they were sure that there was no threat. “Do you want to take the escalator down first, or shall I?”

If they were more than just strangers, Laven might have also suggested using her earrings and taking separate routes. The simple pieces of jewelry were unique in that they acted almost like walkie-talkies with the slight difference in that they didn’t require words to communicate, just thoughts.

On one hand, it would allow them to maintain a safe distance away from each other so as to not draw the attention of others that may also be curious about the sudden crash and might assume that they were fighting and in need of aid. However, on the other hand, she wasn’t sure she wanted to have a butt winged Senshi meddling around her head, nor did she really want to subject herself to their unfiltered mental commentary either.

Encke wasn't entirely sure what he thought of this odd partnership, but temporarily, it was fine. They had use to each other, at least for now, and perhaps keeping her occupied by figuring out the mystery would keep her from doing anything, well, chaotic. Maybe together, they could figure out what was up.

He took one last glance in the direction that the captain had noticed where the power was still out --

Seemed to be still out.

"I'll head down first," replied Encke, warily, taking perhaps an unnecessary berth around her as he headed not down the escalator, but instead opted to take the stairs, hopping down the stairwell at a speed that was granted to him both by his eternal status and his own natural speed.

Best they get there before anything did happen--

Once she arrived, he jerked his head in the direction she saw the power outage in and headed in that direction.

The two walked in silence for a few blocks with Laven sneaking side glances in his direction. Eventually, she could no longer contain her curiosity and finally cleared her throat.

“Soo…” the half-youma worried her lower lip as she waffled on the idea of trying to start a conversation but ultimately decided it wouldn’t hurt to try and make this situation at least a little less awkward. “What’s up with the glowing marks?”

She had seen eternal corrupts with cracked skin that closely resembled a porcelain doll that had been shoved off a high shelf or like a Humpty Dumpty that had been precariously put back together again. They looked incredibly fragile, but the aura that radiated from them was nothing to turn your nose up at. However, none of them had magical tattoos like his; at least none that she had seen.

For someone who could be almost unstoppably chatty around people he liked, he found himself rather quiet around members of the Negaverse. With this one, he was alright with the silence, keeping his focus ahead of himself almost entirely until she asked her question.

Glowing marks.

He wasn't sure how much the word of the transcendent had gotten around the Negaverse, but he imagined at least some people had to know. Two separate members of the Negaverse had attempted to withdraw his starseed and had found themselves repelled. She didn't instantly know what it was, though, which implied if it was a knowledge that the Negaverse had, it was not necessarily common knowledge.

He tapped his fingers against his thigh as a calming mechanism.

"I'm transcendent," he said, by way of explanation. "Confers some benefits. Energy-giving, mainly."

And also the fact that she couldn't starseed him even if she wanted to, but he would leave that part out for the moment. Didn't need to encourage her to experiment.

“Energy- giving?” Couldn't anyone give energy as long as an agent, like her, was involved? What about Transcendence made that ability so special? Laven mentally fumbled over that idea and almost actually tripped over a raised concrete square because she wasn’t paying attention to where she was walking.

“I don’t understand. Does that mean you can just create balls of energy and hand them out to whomever you want?” That would be an amazing ability if she wanted to be lazy for a day and just offer up her own energy instead of stealing it from someone else.

The last thing she wanted was to quite literally scare the s**t out of someone again or be hunted down by a pair of knights because she stole from someone she probably shouldn’t have. Unfortunately, all she could do was gather what she could in order to meet her monthly quota and turn it in to Lopezite for him to take care of.

Encke almost had the momentary instinct to tell her to be careful, but he held it back by biting on the inside of his lip slightly.

No need to cultivate a vision that he might have been a sympathizer.

A safe harbor for anyone trying to leave? Perhaps.

He wasn't surprised that she immediately went to the Negaverse explanation of it, just creating balls of energy. "Similar, but not quite like that." He still remembered the first time he had learned that he had that ability, touching Methone's hands and feeling the flow of energy between them. He remembered the first time he introduced Richard to it, pushing some of his energy through his hands and into his love to recover some of what he had lost when-- "It is my own energy. Can give it to other people."

He glanced at her for a moment, offering a wry smile. "Actually, most frequently offer it to civilians I've found that your types have drained."

It had become a habit of his. If he came across anyone who seemed to be asleep in public in a way unnatural, he would often summon that within him, press his hand to them, and attempt to recover some of that energy that they had lost. Once he saw them stir, he'd often stop and leave, letting them recover without seeing some strange man with glowing marks all over his body hovering over them. Without context, he might think it rather frightening himself.

His accusatory tone was like a non-physical shove and Lavendulan found herself subconsciously, yet also partially intentionally, putting a little bit more distance between them.

“To be fair,” she quipped. “There aren’t as many of my kind as you might think. Half-youma aren’t as common as normal human agents who are able to move about the city more freely.” There was no hiding the bite of jealousy that latched on to her last statement.

Two grueling long years were spent trapped in the Dark Kingdom always having to rely on a Captain, or General, to taxi her to Destiny City then later finding another to hopefully take her back before the sun came up and she had to hide in the bottom of a lake to keep from being seen.

Always a burden or nuisance.

Many agents got their first promotion within the first year of joining the Negaverse. Lucky bastards who were granted, if not gifted, the opportunity to gather energy more frequently. Whereas she was always at a deficit because she couldn’t patrol as often as the rest of them. “I also think it’s more sustaining and efficient to take a little bit of energy than it is to steal a life.” Probably not the best way to phrase that but she hoped he could read between the lines and understand that she preferred not to leave someone unconscious on the street or park bench.

Starseeds were something she simply did not touch.

Once a life is extinguished their usefulness ends. Energy was at least renewable and returned after a few days of rest and proper nourishment. Not that humans should be compared to vegetables, but to a degree they kind of were.

His brows rose lightly when she seemed to take the your kind emphasis as an emphasis on her status as a ... half-youma was apparently their official title. Most of the half-monsters they met either seemed proud of their status or desolate about it. Perhaps she was in the desolate category. Perhaps she was simply bitter. Perhaps she was quick to jump to conclusions.

"For what it's worth," Encke started with, as he watched her scoot a bit further away from him, "I was referring to the Negaverse at large, not the half-youma like you. You and the rest of the agents drain energy all the same. Equally as problematic."

The half-youma especially disturbed him because of what they implied: the destruction of humanity at its base to add a monstrous portion that apparently ripped away their ability to live as a human altogether. It made them wholly dependent on the Negaverse, forced them to live in the Negaverse so far as he had been informed, and made them dependent on energy and starseeds in a way that even normal human agents didn't seem to be. Perhaps that was an assumption. Perhaps it was because most of the half-monsters he had come across had seemed content to drain and starseed freely.

"You could argue it's more sustaining and efficient, sure. Humans do not oft die from having their energy drained. But it's still taking a resource that does not belong to you." Encke's fingers tapped against his thigh just a bit faster. "It's a lesser evil than simply consuming a soul, but it's not excusable. Humans are not your batteries."

He glanced toward her.

"But you're not doing that at the moment, so I'll be civil for now. We have a meteor site to check out."

For now...

It didn't take a rocket scientist to read between the lines when they stood miles away from each other. Whatever this was between them right now, it wouldn't last once they parted ways.

Not that it really mattered.

At the moment Destiny City was in one of its semi-annual rotations. Usually sometime in the summer then later again mid-winter, there was some threat to the city that brought the factions together; be it massive fire-breathing dragons, shadow hounds, or an abominable yetti. These strange incidences always seemed to give them a reason to at least act civilly towards each other; at least for a short while. Then, once the threat was gone, it became business as usual.

Why should she think that this time would be any different?

Simple answer, it wouldn't; and so, for the remainder of their walk, Lavendulan remained silent, not wanting to give him reason to change his mind and be rid of her now.

Any friendship Encke showed the Negaverse was, as always, conditional. Did they starseed? Did they drain? Were they actively doing it at the moment? Were they showing any other signs of tormenting the citizenry of Destiny City or otherwise?

If they weren't, he would be civil. He had been civil to others in the past. Even befriended one of them into their purification and beyond.

Right now, he would be civil.

But the way Lavendulan spoke, he feared it was unlikely they would be civil next time they crossed paths.

He was content to be silent once more until he finally felt the energy source at the edge of his senses, and he motioned for her to follow. "It's this way," he offered, weaving through the streets, presuming she would follow him, until they came upon the dome that was sitting in the middle of Destiny City, obstructing something from view. He couldn't see through the dome, not really. There may have been something moving around in there.

"Can you make anything out?" he called behind him.

Alarms were going off in her head when the Senshi suddenly changed direction with only words of instruction to follow. No information as to why they were going that way or what suddenly caught his attention, be it something he saw and she didn't or perhaps heard.

Fortunately, as the two got closer, she sensed the same thing he did. The aura it gave off did not feel similar to theirs which was concerning in its own right.

Lavendulan walked around the perimeter of the dome, inspecting it closely; going as far as to try digging her sharp claws into it when it became apparent that seeing inside of it would be impossible without breaking it. Stepping through it yielded unfortunate results, landing her on the other side; thankfully unscathed.

"There's something over here," she hollered after spotting a sign. "It says 'Temporarily Closed for Business and there's some help wanted sign offering a reward."

Encke watched her carefully, watching as she used her claws -- admittedly, useful, here -- in an attempt to get past the barrier. Admittedly, her doing that also gave him an advantage. The signature felt very, very off, but if it was related to the Negaverse, it was likely she would have been able to get through.

But she couldn't.

Or, at least, not in any useful manner. He watched as she stepped through and disappeared and then he could hear her voice from the other side; it drew curiosity from him, too, and he stepped forward until he took passed through the barrier--

That was, entirely through it. He landed on the other side near the captain as if he had just stepped forward, completely skipping the barrier.

"I have never stepped through anything quite like that before," Encke muttered, staring at it suspiciously.

He squinted, leaning toward the sign.

"There's some kind of picture of a floating orb on it," he tapped it gently with a glowing finger before turning back toward the half-youma captain next to him. "I guess whoever must have landed and took the power out is looking for, uh, orbs of light?"

"I hope that's all they are," little harmless wisps of light. "However, if anyone is willing to offer a handsome reward for something that was drawn to look innocent. It makes me believe there is more to these things than they are letting on."

It could be that they are incredibly quick, or hard to hold on to. Perhaps they burn if you touch them or startle the little creatures, assuming that's what they were. "I suppose all we can do is be wary if we do see them." There were only two reasons someone would offer up such a reward. Either the things were dangerous or they were very valuable to the one seeking them.

Lavendulan crossed her arms over her chest and took a step back, still wary of prolonged nearness to the glowing senshi. "It looks like this meteor shower brought with it more than one threat." Puddles that reflected a world not their own, a monster that nobody could touch nor see lurking the reservoir, a strange barrier that gave off an unusual aura, and little light beings who may or may not be a threat to them.

"There always is," he murmured, pulling back to look at Lavendulan. "Can't imagine whoever or whatever landed would be making such a big deal out of these glowing orbs if they weren't more than they appeared to be."

But just what were they?

She was right. There was nothing more they could do about them but be wary if they saw them. There were none around, not that he could see, just an ask to return them if they happened to come across them. There were no signs of anyone else around that might have known anything else about them, either. Just the two of them and an apparently impenetrable barrier.

He wanted to try it out again, but he knew that'd be pointless.

"You're right. Guess we'll just have to look out for the threats."

An unsatisfying result, but a result nevertheless.

Well, now that they had their answer, Lavendulan supposed that this temporary truce between them was coming to an end. There was already an odd sort of wary tension between them and she didn't want to press her luck.

"I guess, stay safe-" She paused realizing that throughout the brief conversations that neither of them had exchanged names. Perhaps next time they will take a step forward in an acquaintanceship assuming he still lacked a reason to try to kill her.

The half-youma raised a claw-tipped hand and offered a faux salute by touching her index finger to the side of her brow as she turned to leave. There was one last thing she wanted to check on before returning to the Dark Kingdom.
